Made for Bess of Hardwick, ancestor of the Dukes of Devonshire, the tower was used by the ladies to watch the hounds working during hunts. Decked out in a country-house style, there’s a sitting room with a flat-screen TV, a four-poster with an en suite and a ground-floor en suite twin. The Old Chapel Lacock, Wiltshire Converted chapels often feel a bit too lofty, but this one in the quintessentially English village of Lacock still feels cosy with underfloor heating, mood lighting and a lovely gallery lounge above the main living space. Tall arched windows flood the interior with natural light and offer stunning views across the village rooftops. An antique refectory table is flanked by ornate church pews and there are lots of gadgets, including a Nespresso coffee maker and 47in Blue-ray Surround Sound cinema. There are four bedrooms, two ground-floor en suite doubles, a bunk bedroom with a double sofa bed and a top-floor master suite with an en suite shower room. The Prince Regent East Sussex Train enthusiasts will love this converted showman’s carriage, dating back to 1894, which has been carefully refurbished with lots of ornate artwork. The piece de resistance, though, has to be the stunning living area, with wood-lined walls, woodburning stove and a stunning ceiling.
