Despite getting lost, the IC squad arrived "Good work-out for the boys"-Revie before the England team. According to England Manager, Don Revie, this m a t c h w a s to form t h e b a s i s from w h i c h h e w o u l d c h o o s e his five substitutes for England Cup qualifying match against Finland in H e l s i n k i this Sunday. The match w h i c h lasted o n l y a n hour w a s meant a s a dummy game i n w h i c h the I C team took o n t h e r o l e o f the defensive F i n n i s h side. In a pre-match prep talk, Don R e v i e a s k e d the I C team to p l a y a tight game a n d u s e man-for-man m a r k i n g w i t h a s w e e p e r at the b a c k . T h e r e s u l t of I C e m p l o y i n g t h e s e t a c t i c s , i n t h e f i r s t h a l f , meant that England scored only eight goals — die first of which c a m e a f t e r o n l y three m i n u t e s of p l a y . I n o n e o f t h e i r numerous attacks, IC managed to s a l v a g e a g o a l towards the e n d o f the f i r s t h a l f . T h e goal came after I C h a d forced a t h r o w - i n o n the r i g h t ; M i k e Doyle h e a d e d o u t , but I C C a p t a i n , J i m I l e y put t h e b a l l back i n — it w a s f l i c k e d on by P a t Frampton to P h i l S i n g l e t o n w h o turned o n t h e b a l l a n d p u s h e d it under the advancing body of J o e Corrigan. A s k e d to m o d i f y t h e i r game slightly i n the second naif, I C l i f t e d their p l a y and this produced a much tighter game. With less room t o manoeuvre i n , E n g l a n d found themselves being forced back a n d C o r r i g a n h a d t o make a f e w s a v e s to k e e p I G o u t . England's domination of the m i d f i e l d w a s somewhat r e d u c e d w i t h the s u b s t i t u t i o n of Mick Popper with Steve B a t e s .
