Target Commodities
Strong Fundamentals for Target Commodities:
Platinum
• Political uncertainty of supply - South Africa, Russia and Zimbabwe account for 92% of global supply.
• Increasing demand – Demand has grown by 4.4% per year on average since 1982, due largely to
automotive uses (catalytic convertors). Asian and Indian markets continue to drive this market.
• Declining supply – Primary supply has been declining at 2.6% average per year since 2006.
• Market deficit projected. Source: Wellgreen/Johnson Matthey
Palladium
• Political uncertainty of supply - South Africa, Russia and Zimbabwe account for 84% of global supply.
• Increasing demand – Demand has grown by 5% on average per year since 1982, due largely to automotive
uses (catalytic convertors). Asian and Indian markets continue to drive this market.
• Declining supply - Primary supply has been declining 3.3% average per year since 2004.
• Market deficit projected. Source: Wellgreen/Johnson Matthey
Nickel
• Market projection – Analysts project deficit by 2015/2016 based on lack of new development projects.
Macquarie analysts predict market deficit in 2014.
• Supply constraints – Indonesian export ban (representing 30% of global supply) plus delayed start-up on
new major projects.
•
Source: Wellgreen, INGS, Macquarie Research 2014
Gold
• Favorable fundamentals - Increasing demand combined with diminishing reserves and supply.
• Financial decline in the US dollar caused by large budget and trade deficits and a large increase in the
money supply is positive for gold.
• Global financial deterioration also positive for gold; it is held as a hedge against both inflation and
deflation.
