6 Exciting Mooncake Varieties To Savour This Mid-Autumn Festival!
6 September 15

The Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrated this year on the 27th September 2015, always sees a flurry of mooncake
varieties being introduced from hotels, restaurants and bakeries all prepped for the season. Be it the traditional
baked variant to the more delicate and tender snow skin delight, you will be spoilt for choice in deciding which to
choose for personal savour or as gifts for friends and family. GourmetEstorie presents a round up of mooncakes
from 6 different establishments. For my personal recommendations out of the 6, go for Ritz Carlton’s Red Date
Ginger Tea with Longan or Xin Cuisine’s Xin’s Signature Mini Egg Custard with Egg Yolk Mooncake. The
rest are all good, with a little something for everybody.

Mandarin Orchard Singapore is back with their range of delectable mooncakes ranging from the popular Baked
Mooncake with Mixed Nuts and Jamon iberico to the new Mni Snow Skin Red Wine Cranberry Paste, and
even a Yuzu Lemonongrass Snow Skin variant. While the Jamon iberico may not be for everyone, I still very
much appreciated its confluence of sweet savoury flavours that certainly stands out from the traditional lotus
paste. Crowd favourite Mini Snow Skin Lycheee Martini and Chocolate Mooncake will also be a great gift for
friends this festive season.

Ritz Carlton

The Ritz Carlton, together with Summer Pavilion’s Chinese Executive Chef Cheung Siu Kong, is proud to present
a range of artisan snowskin mooncakes for this Mid Autumn Festival. Look out for items such as the Mini
Snowskin Appletini or the Mini Snowskin Coffeetini. Surprisingly, I found the pairing with a range of
champagne and liquors to be a delicate complement to the snow skin flavours, and most particularly pronounced
when had with the tangy sweet appletini combination.
However, I would highly recommend the hotel’s new traditionally baked Red Date Ginger Tea with Longan.
When I shared it with friends, it was an immediate crowd pleaser. The sweet red date flavours are nicely
balanced out with the little spice of ginger. Beautiful.

Lovers of salted egg yolk will be delighted with the selection from Li Bai Cantonese Restaurant. Chef Chung and
his team has created the Traditional Baked White Lotus Seed Paste with Four Yolks Mooncake and even a
mini snow skin version of Snow Skin White Lotus Seed Paste with Salted Egg Yolk.
While I would normally associate salted egg yolk housed within a traditional baked skin, the snow skin’s fluffy
tenderness subtly compliments the more robust savoury sweet, grounded filling.

The Fullerton Hotel

The Fullerton Hotel’s Snow Skin Treasures is making its return again this year with a contemporary take on the
classics. Unique to the line up and my favourite is the Pandan with Gula Melaka Snow Skin Mooncake. While
it may sound distant and hardly a flavour to imagine from a mooncake, I would say that Pandan and Gula Melaka
is a perfect combination all on its own. Think chendol but packed in a beautiful snow skin mooncake casing. And
if you do wish to go a little extravagant, order The Fullerton Golden Custard Mini Mooncake. Savoury salted
egg yolk and sweet custard is nicely melded together in a buttery pastry shell.

Xin Cuisine, Holiday Inn Atrium
Xin Cuisine has always been one of my favourite restaurants for mooncakes. New this year are two additional
mini snow skin delights that add on to their already impressive line up. Look out for items such as the Purple
Sweet Potato with Macadamia Nuts Snowskin Mooncake and the Coffee White Lotus Seed Paste with
Rum and Raisin Chocolate. Where contemporary traditionals must be had, I would recommend Xin’s
Peranakan Durian Snowskin Mooncake. The durian filling is luxuriously encased in a purplish blue snow skin
naturally coloured with the blue pea flower. It is sweet, rich, and yet indulgent just for that one piece that would
leave you craving for more.
Alternatively, go for the Xin’s Signature Mini Egg Custard with Egg Yolk Mooncake. Rich and smooth creamy
custard is paired with the flavourful salted egg yolk, baked with a crust and topped with a gold leaf.

the season, but the more attractive inclusion is the leather tote embossed with orchid motifs.
