HOUSTON EDITION CHARTERED 1957 March 2016 President’s Message Spring Linda Petticrew is here and it’s Rodeo time in Houston! 2015-2016 Officers & Directors Everyone knows the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo is in full swing so we are encouraging our members to dress in western attire for the March meeting to truly experience the Nominating Committee’s program, Lasso Leaders for EWI. The menu, the centerpieces, the door prizes and even the surprise favors for all attendees reflect our western theme. President Linda Petticrew Shell Energy Resources Company The focus of the program is to generate interest in leadership positions in EWI, which also provides opportunities for selfimprovement. This program will offer a perfect setting to explore what it means to serve on the EWI Chapter Board as an officer, director, or a committee chair. For our newer members, this program is also an opportunity for you to gain a better understanding of each committee and hear from our officers and directors about the committees. Secretary Jessica Witek The Houstonian Hotel, Club and Spa Qualities of an effective leader include but are not limited to: Successfully influencing outcomes and inspiring others to succeed. The Houston Club is such a storied part of Houston’s past and an exciting part of our city’s present and future, plus overlooking the city from the 49th floor was a thrilling opportunity. And the reality did not disappoint. The views as the sun set over the city were truly spectacular. The service The Houston Club provided was top-notch and the food was delicious. After a spirited cocktail reception, Chapter President, Linda Petticrew representing Shell Energy Resources Company, welcomed everyone, particularly executives and guests who were in attendance. As promised, Linda gave us some interesting historical facts that took place on February 11, the date of the meeting, such as; in 1794, the first session of the U. S. Senate opened to the public; in 1939 a Lockheed P-38 Lightning flew from California to New York in 7 hours and 2 minutes; in 1973 the first American prisoners of war were released from Vietnam; in 1990 Buster Douglas (a 40 to 1 underdog) knocked out Mike Tyson in ten rounds in Toyko to win boxing’s world heavyweight title causing one of the largest upsets in sports history; in 1997 the Space Shuttle Discovery was launched on a mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope. Some famous individuals who were born on this date were Thomas Edison, writer Sidney Sheldon, actress Eva Gabor, politician and Texan Governor Lloyd Bentsen, actors Leslie Nielsen and Burt Reynolds, Governor Jeb Bush, singer/songwriter Sheryl Crow, and actress Jennifer Aniston. Linda then asked Katherine Brown, representing Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty, to come to the podium to give the invocation. After her stirring prayer, dinner was served which all of us enjoyed along with great conversation with our tablemates. After dinner, Linda invited Stephanie Hill, representing Recipe For Success and her guest, Shannon Smith, who handles public relations and marketing for Recipe For Success, to announce an exciting EWI chapter-to-chapter challenge! Stephanie announced that EWI of Houston was challenging EWI of San Antonio to a VegOut! competition during the month of March; a free challenge for each registrant to eat 30 different vegetables in 30 days. Last heard, San Antonio was ahead but that was only on day 4 and everyone at the meeting felt extremely confident about our chapter’s chances! GO HOUSTON! Linda then called Donna Gurney, representing JLT Specialty USA, to the podium to emcee the Speed Dating portion of our evening. I missed the Speed Dating meeting last year and was eager to see it in action! Donna explained that she would ask a question, then the two people sitting across the table from each other would answer the question. And the first question was a doozy. It was, “What is the craziest thing you have ever done?” As one might expect, that question led to much head scratching, much conversation, and much laughter! After the first question, everyone on one side of the table shifted to the next chair so that they were across from a new person and then Donna would read the next question, then a shift again and another question. We are certainly a gregarious bunch of people, and the chatter in the room was so loud we could barely hear the bell which announced the next shift. It was a tailor-made opportunity to get to know each other just a little bit better and make stronger connections with each other. After the Speed Dating portion of the meeting, Lindsey Duhon representing Hilcorp Energy Company, our 2015-2016 Fundraising Director, with the help of Michele Votano representing Atlantic Relocation Systems and Sara Waguespack representing John Daugherty, Realtors, drew winners of the fabulous door prizes. Linda returned to the podium with announcements that our next chapter meeting will be held at the Westin Houston Memorial City and the next board meeting will be held at the offices of Shell Energy Resources Company. She adjourned the meeting with wishes for safe travels to us all. Another most memorable evening and a fantastic EWI of Houston chapter meeting! Carole Speed Dating in Action!
