administration spaces, faculty lounge,
computer center, classrooms and a new library.
Many of the original materials were used in the
new addition to promote a sense of continuity
throughout the structure.
The project was completed over the course
of the 4 month summer vacation, on time and
under budget.
Mary Queen of Peace Phase I
Sammamish, Washington 1989
The first phase of this project included the church,
classrooms, and administrative areas. In the
master plan, the church, social hall, and youth
center are clustered around a colonnade and
plaza. These elements were intended to open into
the plaza and reflect upon early Christian
architecture. This enclosure also provided an
outdoor space that was shielded from adjacent
properties.
The church, which is the focal point of center,
seats 900 in pews that wrap around the
sanctuary area. The church’s circular from is
comprised of overlapping masonry walls that allow
indirect natural light into the church’s interior.
The roof is split at the center and opens up to the
sky. The skylight over the opening is narrow at
the main entry and doors and widens and rises
towards its highest point over the sanctuary.
The exposed structural wood roof with soft gray
walls combined with a profusions of natural light
give the interior of the church a special spiritual
feeling.
