DEAR ANNIE: I just discovered that my 14-year-old daughter, “Melissa,” has a MySpace
account where she is posing as a
21-year-old. She posted pictures
of some other female and said
they were of herself.
A military man, 27 years old,
has been e-mailing her, and
some of his letters are rather
explicit. Of course, I will take
steps with my daughter to see
that this does not happen again
and I hope communication
between us gets better. But I am
furious with this man. Perhaps
he legitimately thought she was
21, but I don’t believe it. Any
adult with half a mind could ask
the right questions and discover
the writer was a child. I could
tell from her first e-mail.
Assuming he isn’t stupid, there
is nothing else to think but that
he is a predator.
I have his name, phone number and address, and I have
turned that information over to
the authorities in my state and
the military. Please advise anyone legitimately trying to find a
mate online to ask the right
questions to determine whether
the future mate is of age. For
example, ask a supposed 21year-old if she is in school and
what subjects she’s taking. If she
tells you she’s studying fractions
and geometry, you know she’s
barely out of grade school. —

the Zoning, Subdivision and Site Plan Ordinances of the
Borough of Stanhope, County of Sussex, State of New Jersey,
Notice is hereby given that Susan Zellman has made
application to the Land Use Board for a minor subdivision to
allow for the creation of two lots. The lots will contain
approximately 15,924 square feet and 14,540 square feet and
the zone requires an area of 14,520. In addition, the Zoning
Ordinance require 100 foot of frontage for each lot and each of
these lots shall have 75 feet of frontage on Spring Lane. The
property is located in MR medium density residential zone.
This property is designated as Lot 4 in Block 11105 on the
Official Tax Maps of the Borough of Stanhope and is also known
as 7 Spring Lane, Stanhope, New Jersey.
PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that Susan Zellman has made
application to the Land Use Board for a minor subdivision and
necessary variances to build on a lot with less than the required
frontage located on Spring Lane, Borough of Stanhope, Sussex
County, New Jersey in the MR Zone. In addition, variance is
requested for a pre-existing condition on proposed Lot 4.02
which has an existing home with a side yard of 1.2 feet and a 15
foot side yard is required.
The applicant will further apply for such other relief, including
all other necessary and appropriate waivers and variances
from the requirements of plan detail and the MR requirements
to allow the subdivision and variance to construct a single
family residence on proposed lot 4.01 as per plans submitted to
the Stanhope Borough Land Use Board, and as the application,
plans and exhibits may be amended from time to time during
the hearing process and for such other permits, licenses,
waivers, variances or grants that may be necessary to approve
the proposed project.
This application is on the calendar of the Stanhope Borough
Land Use Board for a Public Hearing that will be held April 14,
2008 at 7:30 p.m. or as soon thereafter as the matter may be
reached in the Stanhope Municipal Building, 77 Main Street,
Stanhope, Sussex County, New Jersey.
At the time of the hearing, interested parties may appear in
person or through counsel, and present their positions.

Spruce up for spring

Nothing beats listening to your

patio might look pretty grungy
from winter leaf and debris stains.
Give it a good cleaning with a

solution of ⁄3 cup of powdered laundry detergent to one gallon of hot
water. Scrub vigorously with a stiff
nylon brush or bristle broom and
thoroughly rinse with fresh water.
Add one quart of liquid chlorine
bleach to the solution if mildew is
present. If your deck or patio still
looks dingy, consider using a deck
cleaning or brightening product to
restore the appearance of the natural wood. Use a concrete cleaner
to remove oxidation on concrete
and restore the appearance of
your patio. Remember eye protection and rubber gloves.
Make repairs to damaged decking, secure fasteners and apply a
fresh coat of deck finish. Although
not necessary, a concrete sealer
can breathe new life into the
appearance of your patio and protect it from freeze and thaw damage if you live in a cold climate.
CLEANING
Despite your best intentions,
your garage or basement might be
filled with a rummage sale’s worth
of stuff and a maze of cobwebs.
Time to play ball.
Work from the top down. Dusty
walls and ceilings, dingy light fixtures and door and window trim
should be tackled before other elements in the space. Windows, closets and furniture are next. Window

Then consult your garden center before you reseed to be sure
you have the best and latest variety. New stronger drought-resistant and heat-tolerant types constantly are being introduced.
When things start to grow, don’t
mow too low. Cutting grass too
short, especially the first time, can
harm the lawn and lead to root
damage. As a rule of thumb, never
trim off more than a third.
Finally, an inch of water once a
week is enough.

Liberty Towers increases energy efficiency
While many celebrated the
spirit of St. Patrick’s Day by
wearing green, residents of
Liberty Towers of Newton
wore green to acknowledge
their efforts to go green by
reducing, reusing and recycling.
Management has encouraged residents to take part in
the energy-saving effort by
signing a pledge to help. By
signing the pledge, residents
committed to turning their
lights off when they are not
home, reporting drips and
leaks from faucets immediately, and using only energy-efficient bulbs in their light fixtures.
Residents already have a
recycling system in place, but
are encouraged to do even
more by reusing and recycling.
Residents can purchase
compact fluorescent bulbs
from the main office at Liberty
Towers to replace standard
incandescent bulbs that use
more energy.
Part of the thrust behind the
campaign was a utility consumption analysis completed
by Dr. Kimberly Woodhull,
executive director of the facility. According to her calculations, between July 1, 2006 and
June 30, 2007, Liberty Towers
consumed more than 2 million
gallons of water and sewer
usage, 324,200 kilowatt hours
of electricity, and 27,881 gallons
of fuel oil.

Towers has taken huge steps
forward in its effort to conserve by replacing single-pane
windows with thermal-insulated windows, replacing weather-stripping, purchasing only
energy-efficient appliances,
and using only energy-saving
bulbs in its five-story facility.
Last year, the facility signed
on to participate in the Energy
Star Change a Light Campaign, setting a goal of 100
pledges, which will save 28,200
kWh of energy and prevent
40,900 pounds of greenhouse
gas emissions.
The front portion of the
building has been enclosed to
reduce the amount of fuel that
was required to heat that portion of the building during the
winter. It has become a sitting
and recreation area for residents and their guests in
warmer months.
The following are a few steps
taken by the Newton Housing
Authority at Liberty Towers
that may help other offices in
the area:
• Keep mailing lists current
to avoid duplicate mailings
• Save information and documents electronically rather
than printing hard copies
• Proofread documents on
the computer in lieu of printing them for proofing
• Reduce junk mail and
duplicate mailings from other
businesses by requesting to
be removed from their mailing list instead of just tossing
the mail in the trash
Purchase items used frequently in bulk and order others only when needed to avoid
excess
• Stay organized so it is possible to locate supplies instead
of buying new ones
• Purchase remanufactured
fax, ink and toner cartridges
and/or return them to the supplier for remanufacture.
• Use ceramic coffee cups,
utensils and plates instead of
Styrofoam
• Establish regular maintenance check-ups for frequently
used pieces of equipment to
extend their life.
• Use products that are
more durable, recyclable or
reusable
• Make double-sided copies
instead of single-sided
• Reuse single-sided paper
for fax paper
• Sell or give old unused furniture and equipment to other
businesses
or
charitable
organizations.
Use a light hand when pruning trees

Spring is an ideal time to prune
most trees and shrubs is just as
their buds are swelling.
Leafless stems make it easy to
see where to cut, dead stems make
their presence known, and with
coldest weather past, chances for
cold damage near cuts are minimized. Warmer spring weather
also promotes rapid healing of
cuts.
Whole books have been written
about pruning (I wrote one myself,
“The Pruning Book”), yet its
essence can be distilled to a few
general pointers. The 10 listed
below won’t result in an expert
pruning job, but will keep you and
your plants reasonably happy.
USE A LIGHT HAND ON TREES
• Prune young trees as little as
possible. Any pruning ultimately
slows growth.
• On any tree, cut away watersprouts and root sprouts. These
vigorous, vertical shoots — the
first originating in the branches
and the second at the base of the
tree — soak up the plant’s energy,
look unattractive, and bear few or
no flowers or fruits.

USE A HEAVIER HAND ON BUSHES
• Avoid hedge shears on bushes, except for those trained to formal shapes. Prune most bushes by
a renewal method, every year lopping some of the oldest stems to
the ground to make way for young

shape without ever accumulating
any decrepit stems.
• Tailor how much you prune
any bush to its growth habit.
Forsythia and lilac sucker abundantly, so remove some older
stems every year to make way for
new ones. Bushes that make few
suckers — such as witchhazel and
rhododendron — need their oldest
stems cut back only infrequently, if
at all.
•Wait to prune spring flowering
bushes, such as spiraea and mock
orange, until right after their blossoms fade or else you will be
removing some of the flower buds

some young canes — which will

AND FOR ALL PLANTS
• Don’t cut unless you have a
clear reason to do so. Trees and
shrubs vary in their needs for
pruning, from, for example,
Japanese maple and witch hazel,
which need no regular pruning, to
butterfly bush and lilac, which
need annual pruning to look their
best.
• No matter what the plant, cut
all dead and diseased stems back
to healthy wood. Also prune back
broken stems, as well as those that
are obviously out of place or rubbing against others.
• Tailor each cut to the response
you want from the plant. Where
you want increased branching,
shorten a stem. Where you want
less congestion or to make a plant
smaller, remove whole stems or
limbs.
• Always use a tool appropriate
to the job. For stems a half inch or
less in diameter, use hand-held
pruning shears. Cut stems up to
an inch-and-a-half across with a
long handled lopper. For even
thicker wood, use a pruning saw,
which differs from a shop saw in
having special teeth that do not
become clogged by green wood.
Use hedge shears for formal
hedges, hand shears and loppers
for informal hedges. Make sure
that your pruning tools are sharp
and clean, because plants heal
quickest when cuts are clean.
Find out why floor vinyl is curling before replacing it

Q. The vinyl in my bathroom is
curling up at one of the seams. It is
quite unsightly and is becoming a
real maintenance problem. Is
there anything I can do to fix it?
A. Yes, but first it’s important to
find out why it is curling. One of the
most common causes of curling
vinyl is excessive dampness in the
crawl space caused by poor ventilation. In your case, a quick check
of the crawl space is in order and
so is improved ventilation.
Install additional foundation
vents at the perimeter.
As far as the floor repair is concerned, start by applying some
heat to the seam with an iron. Lay
a towel down first to prevent damage to the vinyl. Apply steady, even
heat while pulling open the seam a
couple of inches. This will permit
you to clean the area up with a vac-
uum and apply some fresh vinyl
adhesive. Use a modest amount
though — too much will cause the
vinyl to ripple. Re-lay the vinyl and
apply constant pressure to the
area with heavy objects like books.
After several hours, remove the
weight and apply a bead of clear
vinyl seam sealer at the joint.
