Before John and Horace Dodge made
it in the car business, they cut their
teeth on two-wheeled transportation.
As teenagers, the boys built a highwheel bicycle from scrap materials. As
the years and their talents progressed,
the brothers created and patented an
advanced dirt-resistant ball bearing
in 1896. The next year, with $40,000 in
capital, they formed the Detroit Bicycle
Improvement Company, where they
collaborated with Fred S. Evans to make
a bicycle under the Evans & Dodge
name. Increasingly diverted by sales
of automotive parts, the brothers sold
their interest in the bike company
in 1909 and turned their talents and
ambitions toward the automobile. They
opened a machine shop in Detroit, and
the rest, as they say, is history.
