Uni Rugby Ruckus Edition 9, 22 May 2013 DEFEAT SNATCHED FROM JAWS OF VICTORY - AGAIN 1st Grade once again showed their strength in scoring points but a greater commitment to their defence is needed. For the third week in a row we lost in the last few minutes, 34-43. To put 34 points on Neddies is to be commended. A similar story occurred in 2nd Grade going down 29-35 and again a try on the bell hurt us. 3rds scored first but then not again when soundly beaten 7-57. 4th Grade knew that any Nedlands clash would be tough, as it proved when we won 10-3 and kept our recent winning record over them intact. U20 Colts had a much easier assignment winning 83-5 in the highest ever score against Nedlands Colts. The U18 Colts met a strong Joondalup and went down in another close encounter 27-31.The Championships Division teams met front runners Mandurah and saw 1sts lose 0-99, 2nds lost 10-28 and 3rds went down 7-15 1ST GRADE UWA v NEDLANDS l 34-43 In another entertaining encounter, first grade went down 34-43 to Nedlands at the Foreshore. It was a game where we were we dazzling, at times to rattle up 34 points, and also a game where once again, we had terrible lapses in defence to leak 43 points. We fell off too many tackles late in the first period and made some poor decisions late in the game which proved costly. On reflection, it was not really good enough if we are to be finals contenders. Leading 34 - 29, 6 minutes from time, even the most ardent Uni supporter knew it was not over. Nedlands were on the rack after we came back from 26-8 down [a comeback led by late inclusion at 10, Nathan Cummins] and were there for the beating. Alas, it was not to be and we did not deliver, again! Patrick Henning reporting on the game for RugbyWA : “Nedlands has taken out a high-scoring affair against UWA to lift the Mike Denton Shield at The Foreshore, winning 4334.Attacking rugby was clearly the order of the day with the two sides crossing for a combined total of eleven tries throughout the match. Winger Jake Wilson starred for the home side grabbing a brace of tries, as did inside centre Ryan McLeod, while scrumhalf Michael Ruru was also strong for the victors. Nedlands coach Tony Ball was thrilled with his side’s effort on an important day for the club. “The way the boys went about it today was awesome, UWA have a great attack so it’s a massive win for us,” he said. “The second half was an arm wrestle and our boys showed some real character, especially after getting caught out in defence a couple of times and surrendering the lead.” UWA boss Steve McFarland was disappointed his team conceded a late lead to a finals contender for the third week in a row. “In many ways the game today is reflective of how we’ve been this season; with six minutes to go we were five points up and we have to learn how to close games out,” he said. “We are playing some great rugby; in patches it has been some of the best we’ve produced in my time at the club, so for us it’s a matter of stringing 80 minutes of that together.” UWA opened the scoring 15 minutes in with a deft manoeuver from a lineout allowing hooker Harry Scoble to touch down in the corner. Nedlands grabbed their first five-pointer when a powerful rolling maul opened the door for Ruru to cross with Fred Tuua obliging with the conversion. The home side then backed it up when Wilson put McLeod over for his first before some individual brilliance from Tuua delivered another with the flyhalf dancing through the defence to push the score out to 19-5. UWA snatched a penalty goal leading into the break, only to see Nedlands respond immediately after half-time with a brilliant Wilson chip-and-chase try giving Nedlands a bonus point along with an 18-point lead. With the game seemingly drifting from their grasp, the Students found a second wind when Mark Westcott and Christian Joubert both crossed the line within five minutes of one another to bridge the gap to four points at 26-22. A Jayden Scorringe penalty handed Nedlands a seven-point lead on the hour mark but the deficit was immediately overthrown following two explosive tries to the visitors down the left wing, Joubert grabbing his second and Mike Innes his first. With the game in the balance Nedlands closed out the match when McLeod added his second to give the men in blue a two-point lead before Wilson grabbed his second to seal the match.” We play Wanneroo this Sunday at home. We need to get a result, end of story! Uni Rugby Ruckus Edition 9, 22 May 2013 www.uwarugby.com.au NICK CUMMINS IN WALLABIES SQUAD FOR LIONS TOUR Emirates Western Force winger Nick Cummins has been named among the 25-man preliminary Wallabies squad today for next month’s British & Irish Lions series. Cummins made his Test debut against Argentina in Rosario in 2012, finishing the year with six caps and back-toback tries in the wins over England and Italy. He is one of five players selected who made their Test debuts last year. The 25-year-old, who returned to the Emirates Western Force line-up a fortnight ago against the Queensland Reds at nib Stadium, is the sole Western Australian representative in the initial squad. Rugby WA website Nick is a UWA Rugby Club member having played several games with us since his debut in 2008. His brother Nathan played five-eight in last weekend 1st Grade fixture v Nedlands. We wish him every success. 2ND GRADE v NEDLANDS l 29-35 2nd Grade played well enough to win their game v Neddies but came away with just 2 points as a results of their efforts. Tries to Levon Kvas-Rothwell, Thomas Rey and a Penalty try with Levons 3 conversions and a penalty goal looked to be enough to take the win. With minutes to go Michael Patching plunged over for a try to take the lead but we were unable to stem the Neddies tide and gave up a final try to have victory snatched from us. 2nds have slipped to 6th a large 8 points clear of 4th so the next 2 weeks are must win games to stay in touch to see finals action. This week Wests meet Cottesloe and Soaks play Kalamunda in an important round for us. 3RD GRADE v NEDLANDS l 7-55 Not a great day for the Mighty Thirds who took a dent to their finals aspirations as we went down 7-55. Five eight Bob Shallcross scored the opening try of the game which Craig Best duly converted but it was one way traffic after that conceding 10 tries. The loss has slipped us to 5th spot with a 3 win 3 loss record. Still to play is Wanneroo next week (who are on the bottom of the table) and Kalamunda (in 6th place and only 1 point below us). It is vital that we secure 2 wins and turn for the second round with a 5 and 3 record (1 bye with Rockingham dropping out). Next week all the top teams play lower teams and only Neddies meet Cott in Round 9 for a top of the table clash. It is imperative we get maximum points in the next 2 weeks to stay in touch. 2 Uni Rugby Ruckus Edition 9, 22 May 2013 www.uwarugby.com.au 3 Uni Rugby Ruckus Edition 9, 22 May 2013 www.uwarugby.com.au UWA U20 COLTS—UWA 85 def Nedlands 5 A great performance by the 20’s this week saw us score 13 tries and 10 conversions . The match started out well for us with good structure and excellent carries by our forwards . Matt Vear created havoc early with some good runs along with Jacob Kelsall who were both rewarded with early tries . Luke Gilbert had his kicking boots with him on Saturday kicking 9 from 11 for the match. The match was marred by an incident in the second half which saw our Captain Jono Fiore Red Carded for retaliation . I normally wouldn’t condone such an act but good on you Jono for sorting that Neddies twit out when he punched Shorty on the ground who was defenceless . It was a cowardly act by the Nedlands player and its hard when you’re standing right there and see it happen to NOT react . So you’re forgiven mate and I hope the judiciary goes easy on you. Tries flowed pretty readily throughout the match and saw us up by 38 points at half time and close out the match full of running . Neddies did manage a solitary try late in the second half after a string of penalties but who cares when your 80 in front! Goal will be 100 in the second round! Excellent performances on the day by Will Singer ( 3 tries) who is getting better every week with some great carries with the ball, Matt Vear ( 2 tries), Jono Ashton (2 tries) and other tries to Jacob Kelsall, Kieran McGuire, Rob Ferritto, Jack Connelly, Phil Schedlbauer and Richard Conroy. The guys coming off the bench stepping up the tempo and being able to run a tired and demoralised Nedlands into the ground The next two weeks will be BIG for this team coming up against Wanneroo then Kalamunda to close out Round 1 of the competition . It is a 5 team comp at this stage already and a win against both of these will hold us in good stead for finals. Well done to the 20’s who played against Mandurah on Saturday and also Bushy who played for the Hippos in 4ths win over Neddies. They have traditionally been presented with a Centurions Club tie. This tradition has now been updated for players to receive a 100 game pin. On hand at the UWA Rugby Club Cocktail Party after the Neddies game were Centurions back Damo O’Donnell (502), Tony Soldatic (139), Dan Jolley (150), Bruce Hartley (100+), Michael Patching (133) and in front the newest member Ed Meagher (100), Rick Wolters(145) and Boyd Herewini (323). The Centurions were greatly appreciative of the gesture. Pins will be mailed to those players unable to attend on the evening and we hope to see more past players at our home games—this week against Wanneroo. COLTS RECORD v NEDLANDS A moment to reflect on the impressive Colts scoreline against the usually powerful Nedlands Colts. It was the highest Club score v Nedlands surpassing A (1st) Grade 1951 62-6 win and higher than Colts record of 1974 winning 60-0. In the previous 5 years we have won 6 and lost only 3 times to Neddies—well done. Along the way Will Singer (hooker) got a hat trick and Luke Gilbert kicked 9 conversions to both enter Uni Rugby Record books. Fortunately Bev had come out of managerial retirement and was ably assisted by Val and Tane for the team management side of things. Jaco had the boys warming up and getting their heads ready for the game at Joondalup’s home ground. Luka wasn’t playing due to illness but did a great job of timekeeping and providing game commentary for this match report. Shortly after the game commenced, Joondalup were penalised for being offside in front of the posts, Matt Norris ran Magic Boots’ milk bottle T out and voila Uni put three points on the score board. Twelve minutes later Joondalup were penalised again in front of the posts, for I don’t know what, Michael took the quick tap, offloaded to Mikal who gave the ball to Ollie who scored Uni’s first try taking the score to 8-0 in our favour. This coincided with the arrival of Marcus who also wasn’t playing today due to being hit on the scone by a falling brick at work and being knocked out…what the?? Substitutions saw Ed come on for Finn. Joondalup hit back half way through the first half with a converted try closing the score to 8-7- Uni still in front but only by a single point. With 6.30 minutes remaining in the half, Pretty Boots 1, aka Ben S, broke through the middle, pinned his ears back and took off as only he can do to score a try under the posts. Magic Boots converted it and Uni could breathe again 15-7. (In case you are wondering, Pretty Boots 2 is Hayden – check out his boots next week). Joondalup did not lie down and retaliated with an easy converted try taking the score back to a one-point difference: 15-14. With no time left in the first half and the play close to Joondalup’s line, Uni took the ball through several sets of hands (i.e. Pretty Boots 1 to Michael to Ben Hooper ) to find Ed on the wing who scored the well-put together try. Substitutions saw Liam come on for Keegan. The half time score was 20-15 in Uni’s favour. Half-time Interviews: Mikals’ Mum: “It’s a great game – we are playing rugby”…Luka has the flu”. Michael (Nick C’s dad): “We are playing well & covering well but a couple of small errors costing us possession”. Tom (Nick’s C’s brother): “… Lineouts are very strong… boys are doing really well…doing very very well with defence – great game today”…and “Nick is the best brother anyone could ask for”. Val: “Joondalup elbows have been a bit high”. Alex (Mikal’s dad): “We are playing great rugby but some little mistakes are costing us territory and possession”. Louis (Jabba’s dad): “Buddhas enjoying the game - it’s a lovely day for rugby”. The second half began with both teams fired up - play went back and forth up and down the field. Nick Slatts was winded from a big hit right in front of the Uni bench and when he could breathe again was replaced by Finn. Soon after play recommenced, Uni scored with the Albert to Michael set play from the lineout and Magic Boots converted making the score 27-14. At this point it seemed Uni were comfortably in front but it wasn’t to be. Joondalup struck back immediately albeit with a soft try due to Uni’s absence of effective tackling: 27-19. Several Uni substitutions followed involving: Keegan ,Ben Hooper, Joe Kinder; Finn; Jabba; Hobsey; Ben S; Beatty; and Ed. In the final 10minutes of the game Joondalup scored a try followed by another converted try taking the final score to 31-27 in their favour. My guess is the Uni boys will be doing tackling practice at training this week. On a positive note, it’s great to see players who are ill or injured turning up on game day to support the team – this is what helps to build a strong unit! Post-game coach’s comments From Jaco: “We need to work hard at training…we know we can take this comp but it is only up to you!! Lift your heads and believe in yourself!!” 7 Uni Rugby Ruckus Edition 9, 22 May 2013 www.uwarugby.com.au CHAMPIONSHIP 1STs v MANDURAH—l 0-99 CHAMPIONSHIP 2NDs v MANDURAH—l 10-28 CHAMPIONSHIP 3RDs v MANDURAH—l 7-15 8 Uni Rugby Ruckus Edition 9, 22 May 2013 www.uwarugby.com.au FROM THE ARCHIVES—1ST GRADE TEAMS Lets have a look who was pulling on the 1st Grade jumper for Uni 10, 20 etc years ago.
