MURRIETA — So close
yet so far. Maybe better to
say “SO CLOSE AND NOT
SO FAR.”
However you
say it, Paul Nilsen was just
two strikes shy of bowling a
Cal Oaks house record 859
last Tuesday night. The current house record 858 is held
by JUSTIN BORLAND and
JEFF LEWEN.
Paul started his night with
a 280 and 300. He then began
his third game with five consecutive strikes. At that point
he had rolled 27 strikes in a
row. A sixth frame stone nine
pin ended his string of strikes.
Paul followed with two more
strikes, a ten pin and another
strike. On the eleventh shot of
his third game he finished his
night with a 4-7-10. His third
game 233 resulted in a 813
series. If Paul had struck on
his ninth and eleventh shots, in
the third game, his score could
have been a record 859!
Nilsen used his DV8 Diva
to roll his big score in the Suncoast Rollers League. While
the Diva was the ball of choice
on Tuesday night, Paul has
used a variety of balls to roll
big scores in the recent past.
High scores are nothing
new to Mr. Nilsen. He has
rolled several 300s and 800s
the last couple of years and
regularly books in the 230s.
Paul has also bowled in the
PBA World Series Of Bowling
(WSOB) on two occasions.
Congratulations Paul and
thank you BOWLING NEWS

LAKEWOOD — Three
years in a row our Tri Senates
Championship Tourney has
been one of the top draws in
Southern California. Closing
date for our entries is rapidly
approaching. Our Tri-Senate
Championship
Tournament
has sold out three years in a
row. Although our entry closing date is March 31st, 2015
we will continue to accept
entries until our tournament
is full. Bowlers don’t wait!! If
you want to secure your specific squad times being held
one big weekend, Saturday
and Sunday, April 11-12, 2015
at Cal Bowl, in Lakewood,
California, now is the time.
Last year we had bowlers all
the way from Ohio with a team
from Las Vegas Nevada winning the grand first place prize
money of $15,000.00. The
$15,000.00 first prize is guaranteed based on 165 entries.
Yes, this tournament is open
to all USBC/TNBA bowlers.
However, if you are a current USBC member but not a
TNBA member; you may still
bowl in this premier event by
simply purchasing the TNBA
annual membership card for
an additional $20. You may
include your annual membership purchase with your entry form. Therefore, virtually
EVERYONE is welcome to
bowl!
This tournament is designed to attract bowlers from
all skill levels, including “recreational bowlers,” “senior
bowlers” (over age 55) as well
as the high average bowlers!
This is a handicap tournament
that is based on 100% of the
difference between the team
entering average and 1050.
The maximum team entering average is 1050 which is
designed to make sure a team
cannot consist of more than
just a few high average bowlers. Teams whose total entering average is 900 or less, will
be in the running for bonus
prize money for the highest
scoring teams in that category. Also, bonus prize money
will be awarded to the highest
scoring all senior teams. The

PBA Returns to ESPN on March 29 to
Begin Four-Week PBA League Series
Eight all-star teams ready to battle for Elias Cup in PBA’s first national tour visit to Maine
CHICAGO – The stars of the Professional Bowlers Association return to ESPN on Sunday,
March 29 at 2 p.m. with the first in a four-week series of PBA League telecasts, concluding with
the Elias Cup finals on Sunday, April 19, at 11 a.m. All PBA League competition will take place
at Bayside Bowl in Portland, Maine, as part of a six-day “Maine Event” which gets underway on
Thursday, March 26.
The PBA’s first national tour visit to Maine will be an extended fan-oriented weekend hosted by
an upscale bowling facility, beginning with an opportunity for grassroots bowlers in Maine to bowl
alongside the world’s greatest bowlers in a special pro-am event on Thursday, March 26. Friday’s
schedule is dominated by practice sessions for individuals and teams, giving fans and the news
media a chance to meet players for autographs, photos and interviews.
Competition officially gets underway on Saturday, March 28, with two PBA League quarterfinal
round elimination matches. PBA League elimination matches will be best-of-two-game Baker format matches. If a match ends in a tie, a one-ball sudden-death roll-off will determine the winner.
The 2015 Elias Cup competition will begin with the 2013 Elias Cup-champion GEICO New
York City WTT KingPins, led by PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber, bowling the first PBA League
quarterfinal match at noon against the BROOKLYN STyLES, led by 2012 PBA Player of the Year
Sean Rash. Immediately following the KingPins-STyLES match, the defending Elias Cup champion Silver Lake Atom Splitters, led by 18-time PBA Tour champion Chris Barnes, will meet the
Philadelphia Hitmen, led by England’s Dom Barrett. Both matches will air on ESPN on Sunday,
March 29, at 2 p.m.

At 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, quarterfinal competition will continue with the Pittsburgh Jack Rabbits, led by former PBA Player of the Year Wes Malott, meeting the Dallas Strikers, led by playermanager and PBA Hall of Famer Norm Duke (who ironically teamed with Malott to win the Mark
Roth/Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Championship in February). Closing the quarterfinal round
will be a match between Detroit’s Barbasol Motown Muscle, led by 2013 PBA Rookie of the Year
EJ Tackett, vs. Wheaties L.A. X, led by two-time reigning PBA Player of the Year Jason Belmonte.
Both matches will air on ESPN on Sunday, April 5, at 12:30 p.m.
On noon on Sunday at Bayside Bowl, the KingPins-STyLES winner will bowl the winner of the
Hitmen-Atom Splitters match, followed by the second semifinal round battle between the Jack Rabbits-Strikers winner vs. the Muscle-L.A. X winner. The Elias Cup, named in honor of PBA founder
Eddie Elias, will be decided in a special singles, doubles, trios and Baker team showdown at 3:30
p.m. between the two semifinal round winners. The semifinal round matches will air on ESPN on
Sunday, April 12, at 11a.m. and the Elias Cup finals will air on Sunday, April 19, at 10 a.m.
The Maine Event continues Monday and Tuesday, March 30-31, with the Xtra Frame Maine
Shootout, a best-of-three-game single-elimination singles match play tournament that will be covered exclusively on PBA’s online bowling channel, Xtra Frame. It will be open to a field of 64
players, and it will involve four rounds of eight matches in the Round of 64 starting at 9 a.m. ET,
followed by two rounds of eight matches in the Round of 32 on Monday. Competition continues
with two rounds of four matches in the Round of 16, starting at 10 a.m. ET, followed by a Round
of 8, a semifinal round and a championship match on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The winner will earn a
PBA Tour title.

EDITOR’S NOTE: UNDERSTANDING THE “BAKER FORMAT”
For those who may not be familiar with the “Baker format” used in PBA League competition, here’s some basic information. The Baker format was created by American Bowling Congress
Secretary-Treasurer Frank Baker in the 1950s to provide a fast-paced, exciting way to present team
bowling on television, rather than traditional team competition which took an hour to bowl one
game. The Baker format requires each member of a five-man team to bowl two frames: the leadoff
bowler bowls the first and sixth frames, the No. 2 player in the lineup bowls the second and seventh
frames, etc., with the anchor bowler responsible for the fifth and 10th frames. It’s much faster and
requires exceptional team work.

by Therese Lloyd and Frank Weiler
SAN BERNARDINO — Long time Citrus Belt Area Director
DANIEL LORENTZ is celebrating the recent birth of his eighth
grand child, Gage Workman. I am sure Gage is a boy with a bowling future. Why? Because when grand daddy Lorentz placed a
bowling ball in Gage’s crib Gage rubbed the ball with one hand
while waving his other hand and displaying a big smile.
Gage is only a few months old but grand dad Lorentz is already musing about future leagues and tournaments. Daniel
can’t wait for the first Junior - Senior Tournament he competes
in with Gage.
Daniel loves bowling. He is a very good bowler sporting a
205 best average and 300 game. Better yet, Daniel gives back to
our sport. He has been a Citrus Belt volunteer Area Director for
about ten years.
As a volunteer he distributes awards, attends meetings, works
tournaments and helps with lane inspections. That adds up to
hundreds of volunteer hours every year.

HELLO TO BOWLING: Part III
Shakespeare said it best, “To be, or not to be?” Do you want to be envied as a bowler or not? That is the question. Over the past
couple weeks I’ve been introducing you to the fundamentals of bowling; principles and secrets everyone should be taught when they
first take up this sport. Those create the foundation upon which an enviable bowling career can be built. Advancing as a bowler is
much easier with this basic information. To be, or not to be somebody is up to you.

PBA LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS
Sunday, March 29, 2015 - 4:30 PM ET - ESPN
There are two more items to learn before you’re ready to pick up a ball; how the lane is designed to help others beat you, and what
you need to know to prevent that.
A targeting system is built into every lane. It consists of three rows of dots embedded in the approach and arrows set into the lane.
All dots and arrows occur on the same board leading to the center of a corresponding pin. For example, the first dots on the right are
on the same board as the first arrow and the center of the ten pin.
The first two rows of dots are used to precisely locate your feet. The dots near the foul line let you determine how straight you walk
during your delivery. The arrows are targets at which you will aim your ball. These markers provide amazing accuracy for those who
use them. Knowing how to use them gives your opponent an incredible advantage over you! Do you get my point?
Using the system is super easy but explaining it is not, so I’m going to simplify the process. There are a total of seven arrows in
each lane and they occur on every fifth board from the gutter. As a beginner you can totally ignore all but the second one. Once you
start bowling, you will aim every ball at that arrow. It will be your target for as long as you use equipment supplied by the house.
I know what you’re thinking: “How am I supposed to knock down different pins if I keep throwing the ball at the same target?”
The answer is that you can make the ball hit different pins by rolling it over that one target from different directions. Let me try a
simple explanation.
Starting at the back of the approach, a ball moving straight down the center passes directly over the middle dots. It then rolls over
the fourth arrow and keeps going straight until it hits the head-pin dead on. Got that? Good.
Now consider this: Starting the ball left-of-center at the back of the approach changes the angle at which the ball approaches that
center arrow. This time the ball will end up hitting pins to the right of the head-pin. Likewise, starting to the right-of-center and rolling
the ball over that same arrow will take it to pins which are left of the head-pin. That’s the secret to using the targeting system; make
the ball hit different pins by using one target but different starting points. Take a moment to digest that.
You’re probably wondering why you can’t just use the fourth arrow and that’s a fair question. Here’s the answer: A ball rolling
down the center of the lane causes bad things to happen when it hits the head-pin dead on. It splits the array down the middle and can
leave pins standing that look like a hockey player’s smile. Making those spares is almost impossible and that hurts your score.
Using the second arrow makes the ball strike the head-pin at an angle. This creates a chain reaction which mixes the pins much
more effectively. Remember, you need all ten pins to fall, but the ball only contacts four of them. The domino effect takes the others
down and angle enhances that effect. That’s all you need to know about targeting for now; aim for the second arrow and use the dots
to alter your starting point left or right.
Now there’s only one last preparation to make before you’re ready to start learning how to deliver a bowling ball. We need to
determine your starting position.
NOTE: I teach a five-step approach because I believe it produces superior results. That is debatable and you should know that.
PBA LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS
Sunday, April 05, 2015 - 3:30 PM ET - ESPN
Obviously, where you place your feet on the approach is critical. So how do we find the best place for you to start? That’s easy.
Get up on the approach and, facing away from the pins, place your heels near the foul line. Take five and one-half normal steps, turn
and face the pins. Look down and note where your feet are. Now you know, roughly, how far away from the foul line to begin your
delivery. Next we need to determine where you should start from right to left. As a beginner rolling your first ball, we can’t possibly know
exactly where you need to start, but we can make a pretty good guess based on what we do know.
We know that you’ll use a house ball, so it’s probably going to go straight. We know that you’re going to aim for the second arrow.
Since you’re right handed, we know that the ball needs to make contact with the head-pin slightly to the right of dead center. That’s
all the information we need.
Step up onto the approach at the distance from the foul line previously established by your five- and-a-half foot stroll. Put a
yardstick down on the approach pointing directly at the second arrow and the head-pin. Now stand up, face the second arrow and
position your right shoulder directly over the yardstick. Look down and note the location of your feet in relation to the dots. This
will be the starting point for your very first delivery.
That’s the end of today’s lesson because I’ve given you lot of information to process. You have a place to stand and a target to aim
for. Next I’ll introduce you to the skills that will enable you to hit that target over and over.

goes. Take the yardstick and point it along the line formed by the second arrow and the ten-pin. Again, stand with your shoulder over
the yardstick and face the second arrow. Look where your feet are now! This exercise shows how moving your starting point takes
the shot where you want. Repeat this process for the seven-pin. Cool, huh? Now go home and try to not think about what you just
learned. Remember, this game is addicting!

Some Bowlers Relish
A Behemoth Burger
There were quite a few happy bowlers Tuesday night at AMF Woodlake Lanes in Woodland Hills.
And none of them were hungry.
Getting a taste of Bowlmor AMF’s hospitality, some league bowlers feasted on the bowling center’s
much-ballyhooed “behemoth burger” that was heated and ready to eat.
The bowling center rolled out its five-pound, 14-inch-round burger that is designed to be shared by
five or six people. The burger had become the talk of the town because of its hefty price ($54.99)
and tremendous size.
The “behemoth burger” has been a strong seller at certain AMF Bowlmor bowling houses but had
encountered more resistance at Woodlake Lanes.
Still, there were a number of Woodlake Lanes bowlers who consumed a sizable portion of the
burger, such as Geoff Gast, who gave it a thumb’s up. “It was good, really good,” Geoff said. “And
it was free.”
Woodlake Lanes General Manager Richie Clark said the “behemoth burger” was meant to “show
appreciation to every one of our bowlers and create a nice buzz [for the burger]. We also wanted to
give everyone something to talk about when they went home.”
The reception was good for the “behemoth burger,” but not everyone wanted to share in the fun.
Diane Weed said she passed on the chance for a free meal. “There’s no reason to eat something that
big,” she said with a smile. “And I also ate before I came here.”
Added Carol Tucker: “I like veggie burgers.”

Peggy’s love for the bowling business began in 1961 while stationed at Evreux AFB,
France where she worked as Day Manager until 1965. Upon her return to the U.S. in
1967, she went to work at Kings Bowl in Millbrae, Ca as a door to door sales person for
day league bowlers. She transferred to Country Club Bowl, San Rafael, Ca as League
Coordinator. In 1970, the Air Force transferred the family to Guam and she obtained a
job at Anderson Air Force Base Bowling Lanes. She returned to Country Club Bowl and
worked from 1972-1974. In 1974, the Air Force transferred the family to Spain. While in
Spain she worked for Col. Battle Lanes from 1974-1977. She took a position with Active
West at Arrowhead Lanes, San Bernardino in 1977 as League Coordinator and 9 months
later became General Manager until 1983. In 1983, she moved to San Jose and managed
Futurama Bowl until 1985. After retiring from bowling, watching her daughters and
grandchildren bowl and running into her bowling family gave her great joy.
Among her many accomplishments the ones that gave her great personal satisfaction
and pride were her: 3rd Place finish in an International Bowling Tournament in Paris,
France in 1965 where she represented the USA; she was the first woman in Europe to
bowl in pants which at the time was unheard of; Organized and chartered the 1st Women’s “600” Club on Guam in 1971 and the first club President. President of Women’s
Bowling Association Torrejon, Spain from 1976-1977; Organized special groups (Easter

Empire Special Olympics from 60 bowlers to 200 bowlers in 1983; First woman to be
General Manager within the Active/West Company.
Other than bowling, her other significant life accomplishments included: Organized and ran tours for National Convention for American Business Women’s Association; Vice-President and Finance Chairman for YWCA’s in San Bernardino and
Rialto, Ca; Held fashion shows for YWCA’s Holiday Brunch.
Her favorite leisure time activities include: baseball (Love the
Dodgers), golf, card playing. She enjoyed all sports and activities except hockey.
In early 2012, Peggy was diagnosed with lung cancer, following surgery in June 2012, Peggy was given six months to
live. At that time she set out on a six week farewell tour like
a Country Superstar visiting family and friends. Much to the
surprise of everyone including her doctors she survived almost
3 years to the date of her initial diagnosis without chemo or
radiation. Finally losing her hard fought battle to lung cancer
in Livermore, Ca. on Wednesday, March 4, 2015.
She was survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Robert
and Ann Copeland of Dayton. Oh.; son and daughter-in-law,

The Pins Flip Over
Rick Auerbach’s Perfect Game
by FRED EISENHAMMER
Rick Auerbach has a touch for the dramatic.
He showed it last week when he crushed his fifth perfect game
during league play at Corbin Bowl in Tarzana.
The right-handed Auerbach kept the suspense – and the favorable pin action – going until the very end of his 300 game.
On his final shot, Auerbach seemed to hit his target, but it
didn’t appear solid enough as the crowd of on-lookers sighed at
what appeared to be a near-miss.
“I hit the pocket and the seven pin didn’t go down and everyone was moaning,” recalled Auerbach, who played in the major
leagues for 11 seasons from 1971 to 1981. “Then it went from
moaning to cheering as the seven pin fell late! It was FUN!”
Richie Gardner, Auerbach’s teammate, recalled that Auerbach’s final strike was a “good shot, but it was a light hit. And
the seven [pin] fell extremely late – almost when the rack was
coming down. It was really dramatic. No one could believe the
seven fell so late. Jaws were dropping.”
Auerbach’s first shot in the 10th frame similarly was another
hold-your-breath strike. This time it appeared he left two pins,
the five and the seven. But both pins were upended late, keeping
alive the 300.
Earlier in the game, Auerbach appeared to leave the dreaded
7-10 split, but both pins eventually fell.
It was that kind of night.
The 300 marked Auerbach’s first perfect game at Corbin
Bowl – his other perfectos were rolled at AMF Woodlake Lanes
in Woodland Hills. Additionally, Auerbach rolled an 818 series
at Woodlake Lanes.
Auerbach finished with a 707 series with games of 226, 181
and 300 in Corbin Bowl’s Super Stars league.

Laughlin Junior Tournament
to Honor Barry Gurney
by FRED EISENHAMMER
LAUGHLIN — A junior bowling tournament has been scheduled for Nov. 15 to honor Barry
Gurney, the late, great left-handed bowler from West Hills in the San Fernando Valley.
The tournament will compete under an unusual format in which about 30 teams of three bowlers
will take part. Each team will consist of two junior bowlers and one professional. One of the junior
bowlers will be under 13; the other will be over 13.
Bowling Evolved will sponsor the tournament, which will take place at Riverside Lanes in
Laughlin, Nev.
Gurney, one of the preeminent bowlers to come out of the San Fernando Valley, died in July
2013 at 71 after a battle with cancer. He was a four-time Professional Bowlers Assn. PBA50 Tour
champion who joined the PBA Senior Tour in 1991.
Gurney also was a longtime competitor on the West Coast Senior Tour, winning 18 titles, one
fewer than his good friend, Eric Forkel, a longtime San Fernando Valley resident now living in
Henderson, Nev.
The Laughlin tournament, which will be sanctioned by the United States Bowling Congress, is
the brainchild of Dustin Markowitz, who co-hosts the Bowling Evolved talk show with Forkel.
The tournament underlines Gurney’s dedication to youth bowling. He also was an immensely
popular coach who provided guidance to Valley-area bowlers for 13 years. He once estimated that
he had given lessons to more than 1,000 bowlers, many of them youngsters.
“He loved the game and all the things that went with being a pro,” Forkel said.
Markowitz said none of the tournament players will be aware of their teammates until a random
draw is held to put together the three bowlers. “It’s a unique part of the tournament,” Markowitz
said. “I think it will be very exciting.”
As part of the festivities, a five-game scratch tournament will be held Nov. 14. Markowitz
added that a portion of the money raised during the two-day event will be used for scholarships.
Gurney was the first well-known player to announce that he was taking part in the February
2013 Laughlin Cup bowling tournament, which was staged by Bowling Evolved. Gurney would
later join the team of Bowling Evolved, which started as a bowling talk show on the Internet and
has been rapidly expanding.
Markowitz said of Gurney: “Barry was really one of those people who just managed to put a
smile on your face with his personality and passion for bowling and life. I was a fan of his from his
[Bowling Evolved] TV appearances and considered it one of the biggest honors of my life to have
him not only be willing to bowl under the BowlingEvolved.com banner but also for him to publicly
support what we were trying to do with the show.
“More importantly, however, I sincerely cherished Barry as a true friend.”
Said Joan Gurney, Barry’s widow: “Dustin and Eric had always been great friends to Barry. I
hope this tournament turns out well for them. Including the Juniors is a great idea.”
Bowling Evolved had planned to rename its Laughlin Cup in honor of Gurney and stage a
second edition of the tournament in 2014. But the tournament ultimately had to be scrapped for
various reasons.
Markowitz said that event’s cancellation may turn out for the best – paving the way for this
year’s junior tournament.
“Things unfortunately didn’t work out the way we had hoped,” Markowitz said. “Sometimes
the stars aren’t always aligned and sometimes you have to wait until they are.”
Lefty Barry Gurney in his hay day.

BURBANK — Spring has sprung, the IRS is celebrating and,
before you know it, the bunny will be dropping chocolate eggs
everywhere!
Again, we barely get the green beer down before the annual
Pepsi Youth Scholarship Tournament is being held. Today, Coach
Dan and I worked the Sunday squads helping with photography,
selling 50/50 tickets and all the while keeping an eye on Pickwick’s finest Youth Bowlers! Joining us to cheer on their minions
were Coaches Terron and Sly.
Most of our bowlers this year were new to the Pepsi Tournament and it was refreshing to see the excitement and fun that not
only they were having, but their parents as well. Pickwick is very
fortunate to have so many great parents and families involved in
the youth program.
New Spring session of 10 weeks bowling will begin this coming Saturday for the Bumpers, Preps and Juniors. Please consider signing up your young ones in this fun and rewarding sport.
If you are already signed up, bring a friend! Sign up forms are
available at the desk.
