We are called to know, love, and serve God and His creation. We joyfully welcome all to join God’s family and be Christ’s presence in the world. Second Sunday of Lent, Year C February 21, 2016 LISTEN! “While He was praying….!” (Luke 9:29). Dearly beloved Sacred Heart brothers and sisters: We have a problem! And I need your help. You may be wondering, “Father, what’s the problem?” Here is the problem. In the past eight months since Fr. Tom and I came to our beloved Sacred Heart Parish, I keep hearing the same sad news: Eighty percent of our Confirmation students do not attend Mass on Sundays! Isn’t that sad? I have been asking myself the same question over and over: What is the cause of this problem? We send our children to Catholic School to educate them about our Catholic Faith. But why don’t they go to church on Sunday? We can state the obvious. It’s because their parents don’t go to Mass. They drop off their kids at Church on Sunday for Faith Formation classes, but then they don’t bring their children to Mass! That is obvious. But we are not blaming or criticizing anyone here. We are only concerned because we care. Our Lord, Jesus Christ, commands us to love one another as He loves us. And when you love someone, you keep them in your heart. You pay attention to their needs. You find ways to provide for their needs. You care for them and you take care of them. That is why we need to solve this problem together as a family. appearance and his clothing became dazzling white” (Luke 9:29). What lesson can we learn from this event? That we should stay with Jesus in prayer. Why? Here are the benefits: When we pray with Jesus… 1. He wakes us up and makes us sober. “Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake…” (Luke 9:32). 2. He shows us His glory—that is, He becomes real and present to us. “They saw His glory” (Luke 9:32b). 3. We find peace; we feel good. St. Peter said, “Master, it is good that we are here” (Luke 9:33). 4. God reveals Himself to us. God, the Father, said: “This is my chosen Son” (Luke 9:35). 5. The Father teaches His will. “Listen to Him” (Luke 9:35b). 6. We come back to our senses. “After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. They fell silent…” (Luke 9:36). Peter, James, and John were silent, reflecting not only on what had just happened, but on what happened to them and what it meant. 7. We gain back ourselves. But most importantly, we gain the presence of God. In fact, when we give time to stay with Jesus in prayer, we give ourselves time and enter into eternity with Him. What do we need to do now? We need to promote prayer— prayer in private, in the family, and as a community. But what is prayer anyway? It is simply “staying with Jesus.” Staying with Jesus is like breathing in the air. Last weekend, February 13-14, I celebrated the Masses at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday; 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. In the homily, I raised a question: “How many of us say the Rosary every day?” To my surprise, less than a handful of people raised their hands! What does that mean? It means one of two things. Either we know the power and importance of prayer, but we don’t pray; or we do not know the power and importance of prayer so we don’t pray! Returning to our problem of 80% of our children not attending Sunday Mass, we need to pray that our community has faith and confidence in God’s mercy. Once we gain the gift of faith, we gain the sense of God’s Presence. With faith in God’s mercy, nothing is impossible to us. We can do it. As Blessed Mother Teresa used to say: “The family that prays together, stays together.” Let us pray together and stay together with our Lord Jesus. Why is prayer so important and powerful? In the Gospel today, we hear the report of Jesus’ Transfiguration from St. Luke. We should ask ourselves, “What happens before and during Jesus’ revelation of His true nature as God?” The answer is that He was praying. “While he was praying, his face changed in Please say one Hail Mary with me now! God bless y’all!
