Annual Report 2005 - Westgate Resorts Foundation
Annual Report 2005 “Doing well by doing good” “Do all the good you can By all the means you can In all the ways you can In all the places you can To all the people you can As long as ever you can.” -John Wesley The mission of the Westgate Resorts Foundation is to actively support charitable activities in areas where our employees live and work. Emphasis is placed on our employees, children, women, families, seniors and other local programs that improve the quality of life in our communities. Mission Statement “It is my belief that great communities are built by their citizens working together to improve the quality of life. Westgate’s spirit of giving, volunteering, and compassion will continue, as the needs continue, months and years ahead. We’re truly a caring company.” -David Siegel President and CEO of Westgate Resorts A lthough 2005 is only the fourth year that the Westgate Resorts Foundation has been in existence, it is amazing to look back and realize how much has been accomplished over the last year. Throughout this active year, the Foundation has continued to expand and has built a name for itself through its principle of “Doing Well by Doing Good.” Since its establishment, the Foundation has raised and distributed almost $6 million to hundreds of charities and individuals in need. Currently operating in eleven states, the Foundation is helping everyone in the Westgate family feel good about the role our company plays in the communities where our employees live and work. In today’s world, where we have all learned how quickly our lives can change, it really is a great source of pride for me and our Westgate family members to know that there is a safety net for us and our neighbors when some unforeseeable event catches up to us and makes us aware of how valuable our lives are. Whether through direct support from the David’s Dollars fund or via a service from one of the hundreds of charities we have developed a relationship with, it should be comforting for you to know that there is always help available. Research in the world of business indicates that people are taking a significant interest in the kind of companies for which they work. In fact, the single most important factor that people say influences their choice of an employer is “what the company represents in the community.” People today want more than a paycheck - they want to feel that their employer is a caring contributor to the quality of life in their towns, our country and the world. I also think that when families are looking for a company to provide them with a lifetime of quality vacations, they need to feel comfortable that the experience will include a sense of pride in that company and its employees. The Westgate family is a large and growing entity: hundreds of thousands of owners; 10,000 employees; literally hundreds of vendors; close to a million annual guests and hundreds of marketing and business partners. They all support the Westgate Resort Foundation with their contributions of time, talent and resources. We appreciate everything they do for us and, in turn, we treat their trust with the greatest respect. As big as the Foundation is today, I already know that 2006 will see it grow even more and the work it is doing will continue to make us all proud. David A. Siegel From the President Westgate Resorts Foundation Westgate Resorts Foundation “It’s important to our company to be a responsible and conscientious corporate partner in the communities which are home to our resorts as well as our employees and their families.” -David Siegel President and CEO of Westgate Resorts Annual Revenue T he Westgate Resorts Foundation has raised and contributed almost $6 million to charities since its inception. These funds have been donated to organizations that provide services for women, children, families, and seniors in Central Florida and other communities where Westgate owns and operates resorts. The Westgate Resorts Foundation is unique because every dollar is raised by Westgate employees, executives, and business partners. In fact, it is widely known that a commitment to the community is a prerequisite for conducting significant business with Westgate Resorts. Additionally, David Siegel pays all of the administrative and operating costs of the Foundation to ensure that every dollar raised goes directly to people in need. (Excluding certain taxes, licenses, bank charges and similar charges of this certified, 501(c)(3) organization’s expenses, allowing 100 percent of the net funds donated to the program to be distributed to charities. In connection with certain fundraising events, the Foundation may incur certain out of pocket expenses in connection with such events, including event location rental fees, equipment rental, food costs, advertising and similar expenses which are netted against the funds raised from particular fundraising events.) Year Other (Interest, M&T, etc.) 18% Employees* 20% Events 13% Vendors 23% Owners/Guest Folios 26% 2005 Sources of Funds T he method by which the Foundation spends and invests its funds each year is carried out by members of the board, the Foundation staff, and over a hundred company employee volunteers. Everyone participating in this process recognizes the importance of evaluating and selecting charities that provide services in the communities where Westgate operates. In 2005, over 130 charities submitted proposals that were assessed by this team from the Westgate family. Over 110 grants were given this year to groups who met or exceeded the selection criteria. The charities supported by the Westgate Resorts Foundation have touched the lives of tens of thousands of people both in our company and across the country. In addition to the grants, another $249,360 was invested in the Westgate Resorts Foundation’s endowment account. This important account has now reached a total of over $550,000. * Note: Of the 20 percentage points in the Employee category, 12 of those percentage points are comprised of contributions made by the David A. Thousands of pieces of furniture and appliances are donated annually to local charities for use in their programs. In addition, gift certificates valued at more than $125,000 for stays at Westgate Resorts locations are donated to charities for use in fundraising efforts such as silent auctions and raffles. Company-wide food drives, clothing drives, book drives and other worthy efforts are other ways that Westgate employees can help those in need. Highlights Future Looking toward the “The unselfish effort to bring cheer to others will be the beginning of a happier life for ourselves.” -Helen Keller S even years ago, two scholarships at Valencia Community College in Orlando were endowed to honor the memories of Joseph F. Cordovano and Chad Normington. Funds were raised by Westgate and matched by the state of Florida. Every Spring and Fall semester, deserving employees and in some cases their dependents, are awarded scholarships to offset their tuition costs at Valencia Community College. In 2005, 13 employees were awarded these scholarships totaling $2,750. In 2003, the Westgate Resorts Foundation added its own scholarship program, which made scholarships available to employees in Central Florida and Gatlinburg. The program has continued to expand, and scholarships are now available for any accredited university or college within the metropolitan areas of ALL Westgate Resorts properties! In 2005, the Westgate Resorts Foundation granted $10,341 in scholarships to 41 commendable recipients. Scholarship Program 2005 The David A. Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort employees in Gatlinburg participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on October 16, 2005. I n addition to cash donations, one of the most precious and powerful gifts contributed by Westgate is the gift of volunteering. The volunteer efforts of Westgate employees are organized, facilitated, and guided by the CareForce, the company-wide volunteer program that was launched in 2003. There are currently over 1,000 Westgate employees listed in the CareForce volunteer database. This company-wide resource identifies their interests, strengths, and available times, and allows the CareForce to match volunteers to projects that result in the most satisfying and rewarding experiences possible. At any given moment, the CareForce can provide a charity with a list of employees who are interested in assisting various worthy causes – including assistance for children, the elderly, special needs populations, animals, the environment, etc. In 2005, more than 20 charities in Central Florida alone benefited from the CareForce efforts. For example, many Westgate employees participated in the “Make a Difference Day” at the Sunshine Foundation, which is the first wish-granting organization for terminally-ill children. The employees spent hours decorating the village for Christmas to raise the spirits of the children visiting there. CareForce members have also raised tens of thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society by participating in the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” Walk and “Relay for Life.” Other CareForce members trained for 18-21 weeks to take part in the Marathon to End Stroke for the American Stroke Association. Additional volunteer projects include the Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, Westgate Resorts Food and Toy Drives, serving lunch to the homeless, and protecting and preserving our environment. Volunteer efforts like these were coordinated and carried out across the country in: Gatlinburg, TN; Park City, Utah; Branson, MO; and Williamsburg, VA. These generous acts of service resulted in over 4,500 hours of volunteer time from the Westgate CareForce members. Westgate Resorts takes great pride in having the kind of caring employees who willingly give of themselves every year to help valuable organizations that enhance the quality of life in our communities and our country. Anyone interested in joining the CareForce or having the CareForce as a resource for their favorite charity, please email volunteer@wgresorts.com. The Westgate CareForce A few areas where the David’s Dollars Foundation provided assistance in 2005: Helped several employees with emergency travel expenses so that they could be by the bedside of a critically ill family member or attend their loved one’s funeral. Assisted employees with funeral expenses of their dependents. Made dozens of mortgage and rent payments for employees with unforeseen emergencies. Covered numerous utility payments for employees with unexpected crises. Distributed over 100 grants for these and other general support purposes to employees affected by house fires, illness, emergency surgeries, etc. Offered Critical Incident Counseling to employees who had encountered traumatic events. Donated hundreds of free room nights at Westgate properties for employees who experienced unfortunate emergency situations that forced them to find short-term alternate living arrangements. David’s DollarsFoundation T he driving force behind all of the fundraising activities is the David’s Dollars Foundation, which is one of the principal beneficiaries of the Westgate Resorts Foundation. The David’s Dollars Foundation was created to provide a safety net for employees when an unforeseen tragedy occurs in their life. Over the past several years, the David’s Dollars Foundation has provided over $1 million to Westgate employees for a wide range of support and services that include medical equipment, emergency housing, travel to visit sick relatives, and, unfortunately, funeral expenses. As an additional source of assistance for our employees, an annual toy drive is held prior to the holidays. Employees are given their choice of gifts and stocking stuffers for their minor children. In addition, company-wide food and clothing drives are held to benefit local charities with the understanding that, if requested, the charities will give priority assistance to Westgate employees in need. “…It has been said ‘In each life some rain must fall’. My diagnosis of breast cancer came as a deluge to me as thunder, lightning, and dark clouds. Your financial help came to me as a ‘ray of sunshine’. Thank you David Siegel and Westgate Foundation. When I gave my monthly contribution to help those in need, I never dreamed I myself would one day need help. We never know what lies ahead in our future. I pray other employees would choose to be part of those donating for unfortunate circumstances that may occur in others’ lives. Once again, thank you very much and God bless…” - Margaret Small, Telemarketing Knoxville “…Thank you for your concern during the time I was absent due to my house fire and my mother’s injury. The gift card to Walmart from the Westgate Foundation is a blessing. I have already used the card to purchase groceries, as all my food items had to be discarded after the fire. I certainly will be using the gift card when I move back into my home in a couple of months. Again, thank you so much. I am blessed to work for such a considerate and giving company, and I truly appreciate all that you have done for me…” “…I would like to take the time to express my sincere gratitude for your assistance during my family’s time of need. Not only have you enabled us to resolve unexpected attorney fees related to our emergency foster care situation, but you went so far as to provide us with money for essential baby needs that we were not able to afford. All of this has truly been a blessing to me and my family. It is nice to know that I work for a company that takes the time to care for their employees and their families…” - Jennifer West, Collections Ocoee Call Center “…I just wanted to thank everybody involved in helping my family recover our losses from the fire in our building. It’s hard to believe that the things that took years to acquire can be destroyed in minutes. Your gift will not be forgotten, and I wish everyone at the Westgate Foundation and CFI all the health and happiness that life has to offer. The world would be much nicer if more people were like you! Thanks…” - Vasiliki Hall, Sales Westgate South Beach - Brenda Hogan, Telemarketing Knoxville David’s Dollars Foundation “Unless we think of others and do something for them, we miss one of the greatest sources of happiness.” -Ray Lyman Wilbur F inally, as further evidence of the Westgate Resorts Foundation’s commitment to education, the Westgate Resorts Foundation has become a “Partner-In-Education” with Oak Ridge High School in Orlando, Florida. Westgate executives and employees work hand in hand with the school administrators, faculty, staff and students on a daily basis to help improve the quality of education in this community. Westgate employees provide volunteers for school activities, student mentoring and support of special events. For instance, the Westgate Foundation has implemented a program to promote parental involvement by helping convert the school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) into a new organization named Parents Taking Responsibility (PTR). The PTR is focused on improving communication and interaction between parents, teachers, administrators and students. Because of Westgate’s dedication to this initiative, Westgate Resorts was recently honored by Orange County Public Schools as an Outstanding Community Partner. “…Thank you so much for your generosity in providing dinner for Oak Ridge High School Cultural Chat N Chew. We had over two hundred parents and students in attendance, and it was a positive and exciting celebration. Thanks to your contribution, our event was a great success…” - Maxine Risper, Principal Oak Ridge High School “…On the behalf of our Principal, Ms. Risper, the administration, faculty, staff, and students, we would like to thank you for your participation in this year’s Freshman pre-planning activities. Your generosity has allowed us to successfully welcome our new and veteran teachers and freshman students to Oak Ridge High School.
