Dear Friends:
Complements from Barbara
If you were at our fabulous 15th Annual National Cancer Survivors Day event in June, you already know
that this is my last Complements letter for Celebrate
Life! (sniff) My last official day at OSP was August 5, 20 years after I started working here at the hospital.
We have certainly come a long way in 20 years! Here’s a part of my retirement letter to Ellen:
“I am very proud of…the hundreds of patients we have assisted to live meaningful and purposeful lives
even though they have a cancer diagnosis. Opportunities for personal growth and improved quality of life
have been the hallmark of the Oncology Support Program. I leave knowing that under your dedicated leadership and the support of our fine staff and volunteers, the Benedictine Health Foundation and the administration of HealthAlliance,
OSP will continue to offer the community these excellent services.”
I'm sure you know that I won’t be sitting around in a rocking chair or spending hours in front of the TV. I'll continue to travel to Westchester to be with my daughter Erica and granddaughter Alexandra and to have time in Ulster with my daughter Jenny and grandson Nathaniel. I'm committed to my work with the Circle of Friends for the Dying and its mission to create a not-for-profit Home for
the Dying in Ulster. (Check us out on FB!) The CFD Death Cafes will continue, as will my connection with old and new friends. Now
I can be a recipient of the wonderful programs that I had a hand in creating over these past 20 years: the Healing Circle Improv
group, exercise classes, Memoir group, Miso Happy as well as some wonderful new programs we've recently created. They are
described here in Celebrate Life!
So I look forward to seeing you around and hope you will stop by to say good-bye at the retirement party that OSP is hosting on
September 5. (See elsewhere in this newsletter for details!)
With much love and appreciation for these past 20 years...and more to come.
Love and Gratitude —
Barbara Sarah
OSP Highlights: As we welcome in the autumn/winter season with new social work interns joining
our staff, we take a moment to bid a fond farewell to a very special person. Barbara Sarah, Founder of the
OSP, announced her retirement at our Survivor’s Event in June. We will all have the opportunity to share
memories and express our gratitude to Barbara at her retirement celebration on Friday, Sept. 5 at the
Mint Restaurant on the Strand.
We look forward to some wonderful programs and events during the next few months. On Sept. 13, in recognition of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, the Linda Young Ovarian Cancer Support Program will
be inviting its supporters to join in a fundraising Cruise Along the Hudson on The Teal -- all funds raised will
go to financially support women with gynecologic cancers. Our community is incredibly committed to helping
those affected by cancer. For the past 11 years, the Rosemary Gruner Fund has been offering food and
gas cards to cancer patients undergoing treatment. Sept. 21 is the Annual Gruner Bike Ride, organized by the Benedictine Health
Foundation, and this year we are committed to an OSP TEAM…T-shirts and all! If you have ever been the recipient of the Gruner
Fund and would like to give back, or if you would like to pay it forward…join us for this wonderful and fun family event.
In recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the OSP has planned a special program in which two local acupuncturists will talk about staying healthy through the seasons by integrating the principles of Chinese Medicine while also demonstrating a special Qi-Gong Exercise for Breast Health. In November we have planned a program in coordination with Hudson Valley
Hospice. We will be showing the film, “Continue the Conversation,” followed by an informative panel discussion addressing questions about end-of-life issues, advanced directives and the differences between hospice and palliative care. At the OSP, we believe
that each person has his/her own unique way of accessing support. Speaking with one of our social workers or a “Nurturing
Neighbor” is preferable to some, while others appreciate group support where they can connect with people going through similar
cancer-related experiences. Since personal expression through the Arts provides a powerful vehicle for connection, we offer a rich
array of programs in the Healing Arts facilitated by talented and generous artists from our community. Our Watercolor and Words
class will continue into the next season, as will our Poetry and Memoir Groups. We have added a new weekly class, Guided Imagery for Health, and we are also sponsoring a special Empowerment Workshop. In addition to our Support Groups for women,
men, and care-givers, we continue our commitment to offering a Youth Support Group. It is important for children to recognize
that they are not alone in facing the challenges of cancer in their families. Since it is also valuable for parents to explore how to
speak to their children about cancer in an honest yet age-appropriate way, parents are encouraged to meet in a group while their
children are having fun connecting and learning coping skills.
As we look back over the last few months, we would like to thank all of you who have participated in our programs, made donations
to OSP or volunteered your precious time. We especially thank those of you who continue to teach and inspire us. During the next
few months, we look forward to seeing you at one of our events, programs, groups or simply over tea at our lovely Reuner Support
House.
Warmly, Ellen Marshall, MS., LCSW-R, Director of the Oncology Support Program

Welcome and Goodbye to our Interns and Volunteers
I am a second-year graduate student in the Master
of Social Welfare program at SUNY Albany. I
came upstate to study Psychology in New Paltz,
fell in love with the Hudson Valley area and never
left! In my spare time I love doing yoga, hiking,
gardening/sustainable agriculture, playing music,
and traveling. This summer I was able to visit Central and South America, where I did some some
organic farming and worked as a member of a sustainable farm community in the beautiful mountains
outside of Quito, Ecuador. I am immensely excited to start working with the Oncology Support
Program and feel that it is a privilege to do such
important, meaningful work. I am especially eager
to partake in different modes of natural therapies
such as music, art, yoga/meditation, and growing
and cooking food, which happen to already be
some of my favorite things! —Meg Riebesell
I was raised in Brooklyn, lived in California and Boston, and now call Woodstock
my home. I’ve been a journalist, a professor, and have worked in both the
high-tech and non-profit worlds. I am
also a licensed MSW with experience in
end-of-life issues, communication challenges and family stress. I hope to help
patients and their families and caregivers manage the challenges of living with
cancer and look forward to volunteering
at the Oncology Support Program.
—Jennifer Halpern, PhD., LMSW
Hello, my name is Amie and
I am very excited to be joining
the Oncology Support Program
team as an MSW intern! I am looking forward to getting to know and
learning from the staff and participants. I have a professional background working in the fields of education, farming and public health.
I love gardening and am an
avid outdoor enthusiast. I obtained
my bachelor’s degree in Human
Development and Women's Studies and am excited to continue my
education at the University at Albany starting this fall.
—Amie Baracks
Eleanor Roosevelt stated, “Many people will
walk in and out of your life, but only true
friends will leave footprints in your heart.”
Since January, I have had so many new experiences and there are many people that I
can truly say will always have a footprint in my
heart. I thank those I have met, the women of
OSP who welcomed me to the “Team”, the
groups that made me feel welcome, and most
of all, the many people who shared their journeys with me. You all have touched me personally and professionally. I look forward to
bringing everything I learned here at OSP with
me on my journey of life. —Connie Carr
Hello Everyone! As a community member and a second-year Social Work
Student at Adelphi, I couldn’t be more
excited to Intern for the Oncology Support Program this coming 2014-2015
school year. Over the last decade, I
have done everything from working
with homeless families to directing a
program which provided tobacco education to local elementary schools. I
have always had a passion for helping
and am thrilled to begin my clinical
social work training in such a highly
regarded program. I anticipate that this
will be a great year of learning and
growing. I look forward to all that is to
come.
—Juanita Hotchkiss
Farewell to the Oncology Support Program. This year has
gone by very quickly. It’s hard
to believe my time here is over.
Thank you all for the many
laughs, talks, hugs and moments. You have all taught me
more than words can express.
Thank you for welcoming me
into your lives. I wish you all the
best life has to offer and to remember, in the words of Barbara Sarah, “Be in the moment”
—Julie Brady

for Getting Well
Guided imagery is a powerful application of mind-body medicine. Stories, metaphors and mythic imagery
can have a dramatic effect on the body and immune
system. Together we will learn to manage the shock of
diagnosis, prepare emotionally for surgery, manage the
side effects of treatment such nausea, insomnia and
pain and create imagery to transform the cancer cells in
the body. Join Ajamu Ayinda on FRIDAYS, beginning Sept. 19 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at

September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month
The Linda Young Ovarian Cancer Support Program
Provides information and support to women with ovarian and other gynecologic cancers, educates the public and medical community about symptoms and early detection of ovarian cancer, and offers financial assistance to women diagnosed with gynecologic cancers. Once thought of as a silent killer, we now know that between 80% and 90% of women with ovarian cancer experienced symptoms at the early-stages. Early detection and treatment greatly improve survival. There is no test yet to diagnose
Ovarian Cancer, so... Awareness is Best.
Know the symptoms:
Know what to do:
• Bloating
• Pelvic or abdominal pain
• Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly
• Urinary symptoms (urgency or frequency)
Other symptoms may include: fatigue, indigestion, back pain,
constipation, pain with intercourse, menstrual irregularities
If you have these symptoms almost daily for more than two
weeks, or have symptoms that are unusual for your body,
see your gynecologist. Experts recommend a pelvic/rectal
exam, a CA-125 blood test and a transvaginal ultrasound. If
ovarian cancer is suspected, seek out a gynecologic oncologist. (foundationforwomenscancer.org).

Detecting Uterine or Endometrial Cancers
The most common warning sign for uterine cancer, including endometrial cancer (cancer of the uterine lining)
is abnormal vaginal bleeding. Recognition of this symptom often affords an opportunity for early diagnosis and
treatment. In older women, any bleeding after menopause may be a symptom of endometrial cancer.
Younger women are also at risk and should note irregular or heavy vaginal bleeding.
Consult your healthcare provider if you have any unusual symptoms or concerns.
Uterine Cancer and the Obesity Connection
Obesity is the greatest risk factor for endometrial and uterine cancers, which are on the rise. Obese and overweight women have 2-4 times the risk of developing this disease than women of a normal weight, regardless of
menopausal status. According to a recent study, there was an 81% reduction in relative risk of uterine cancer for
overweight women who reduced and maintained normal weight. (Ward et al.[Gynecol Oncol (133) 2014])
High levels of estrogen produced by fat tissue play a key role.
The wellness programs at OSP promote a healthy diet and physical activity.

No matter our age, we are always affected when a loved one or caregiver has a cancer
diagnosis. It is an OSP priority to offer support to young people affected by cancer.
In memory of
our beloved

grandchildren
Akasha and
Xavier,

Cancer in the Family
Support Group for Youth
(ages 8-13)
Mondays from 4:30- 6 p.m.

Are you mad, sad or scared that your parent
has cancer? Do you have mixed feelings?
You are not alone.
Come hang out with other young people who know
what it’s like. Make art, share experiences, have fun
and do activities (art, gardening, writing). We meet in
a comfortable, supportive space. Pizza is served.

FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH NEWSLETTER
FLOWS AGAIN
Our first and only issue of this peer
newsletter was created by teens
in 2005. While Issue #1 is a timeless gem…it’s time for another edition! Stay tuned! Youth are welcome to create content
for this newsletter by attending our groups or submitting
art and writing separately.
Please contact Valerie Linet at ext. 101 or
email valerie.linet@hahv.org for details.
Children need to know:
• The name of the cancer
• How it will be treated
How their own lives will be affected
Cancer is a complicated disease to understand, even for adults.
How do you tell your child(ren) that you or someone in your
family has cancer? How do you take children’s feelings seriously
and talk to them about cancer in a way that is developmentally
appropriate? Connect with other parents sharing similar questions and concerns.
The Parent Support Group meets at the same time as the
Youth Group but in a different room of the Cancer Support
House. Parents will have the opportunity to connect with their
children at the end of the group while sharing pizza.
Third Monday of each month, 4:30-6 p.m.

identify our unique constitution and what we can do to best align ourselves with the Metal and Water Elements which manifest during the fall andWinter months. In the second part of this workshop, Meg Coons, L.Ac. will demonstrate simple Wu
Ming Qigong energy movements specifically designed for breast health. She will also focus on simple lifestyle changes,
including specific healing foods that can help support our wellness.

FREE Program: Consider the Conversation!
Wednesday, Nov. 12, 5:30- 7:30 p.m., ASB Auditorium
“I like to know where a road leads before I set out on a journey,” says Martin Welsh, M.D. But what if that
journey leads to the unknown? In Consider the Conversation: A Documentary on a Taboo Subject, Dr.
Welsh speaks frankly about living with a progressive life-threatening illness. The film, which features interviews with patients, family members, healthcare professionals and leaders in end-of-life care, will serve as a
springboard for a panel-facilitated discussion about the importance of communication and preparation, preferably before facing the end of life. Panelists will include: Holly Llobet, MD, Sandra Owen, LCSW, Brenda
Relyea, RN, Sister Dorothy Huggard and Elise Lark, Ph.D., LCSW. You will leave inspired and empowered to engage in end-of-life discussions and with a clearer understanding of the difference between Palliative and Hospice Care. Call (845) 339-2071 ext.100 to register or email doris.blaha@hahv.org

I expect to pass through this world but
once; and any good thing, therefore, that I
can do or any kindness that I can show to
any fellow creature, let me do it now;
let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not
pass this way again.
