Welcome to Greyston’s annual gala! We are delighted to be celebrating
Yonkers and Greyston’s work here since 1982. We are thrilled to work hard
for the people of Yonkers and to begin sharing our core practice of Open
Hiring beyond Westchester County. We are working to help businesses
around the country to embrace and practice Open Hiring—arguably the
best thing to be developed in Yonkers since the Otis Elevator.
We are so grateful to all of our guests and contributors who have joined
us this evening. Through Open Hiring, we do not simply create jobs, we
generate the infrastructure that is needed for a community to thrive.
By sharing the things we have learned in Yonkers with the world we are
building opportunities to create thriving communities for people who have
been underserved and excluded for generations.
This year’s honorees exemplify so much of what is meant by Open
Hiring. Sobeida Cruz’s commitment to environmental justice at the
New York Power Authority changed the game for the low-income
communities that are most often located near power plants and who have
the most to lose from environmental consequences. Her founding of the
Charter School of Excellence in Southwest Yonkers has raised the bar at
both the entry point for elementary education and the transition to
secondary education. She has also played a key role in changing the
landscape for women and immigrants in our communities by founding
the dynamic organization 100 Hispanic Women.
Ken Jenkins has been a long time member of Greyston’s Board of
Directors and has been a good friend to Southwest Yonkers. Ken’s life of
public service and community involvement has included leadership roles
at the United Way, the Westchester County Crimestoppers, the District
Attorney’s Community Advisory Committee and a five year term as president
of the Yonkers NAACP. As an elected official, Ken has played a significant role
in legislatively protecting the rights of the people of Westchester County and
his role as President/CEO of the Yonkers Industrial Development Agency
continues to bring businesses, and with them jobs, to our city.
Your support at the gala is critical for us to be able not just to continue
our existing work but to raise the bar for our own programs, clients and
team members. By doing so, we create a ripple effect that begins with the
individual and impacts families, neighborhoods, and ultimately our entire
community.
Finally, on behalf of the entire Greyston community, I would like to
thank Deborah Stewart for her leadership as Chair of the Greyston
Foundation Board of Directors. During Deborah’s tenure Greyston has seen
significant growth and positive change. We are indebted to her for all her
hard work and, perhaps most importantly, to the love that she has brought
to Greyston.
Thank you for gathering with us this evening as we celebrate Greyston
and Yonkers. I hope you will all join us saying loud and proud “I am Open
Hiring” as we work together to change the world.

SOBEIDA CRUZ
was appointed
in 2013 as
Commissioner
of the League of
United Latin
American
Citizens Women
Commission.
LULAC is the oldest
Latino civil rights organization
in the United States.
In 2013 she retired as Vice
President for Environmental
Justice at the New York
Power Authority, NYPA’s
primary liaison in addressing
environmental justice needs
in communities near NYPA
facilities from Long Island to
Western New York.
Before joining NYPA
Ms. Cruz was
appointed
by Community
Planning Board
#1 in the South
Bronx, as its first
female district
manager.
In 1995 she
co-founded 100
Hispanic Women Inc., a
not-for-profit organization
dedicated to mentoring,
empowering and advocating
for Hispanic women. She is
President of the organization’s
Westchester chapter.
She currently resides in
Yonkers with her husband,
Eddie, and two daughters,
Amelia and Eleana.

County Board of
Legislators in 2015.
From 2010-2013,
Ken served as the
Board’s Chairman.
Ken also serves
as President/CEO
of the Yonkers Industrial
Development Association—
whose mandate is to create
job growth in Yonkers—a
position which affords Ken
the opportunity to continue
the work he cares most about:
economic development, jobs
and affordable housing in
Westchester.
Ken’s many years
of public and community
involvement include service
on the boards of many
distinguished community
groups and
organizations,
such as Greyston
Foundation,
United Way, the
Westchester
County District
Attorney’s
Community
Advisory
Committee, Westchester
County Crimestoppers and
the Community Planning
Council of Yonkers. He was
President for over five years
of the Yonkers Branch of the
NAACP. He also has served
as President of the Yonkers
Community Action Program.
Ken and his wife,
Deborah Hudson-Jenkins,

OPEN HIRING embraces an individual’s future potential
by providing employment regardless of educational
attainment, work history, or background, while bringing
together services and support needed to succeed in
the workplace and thrive in the community. It includes
an apprenticeship program and job training to those
who come from extreme low-income, high-barrier
communities, alongside a holistic approach to
transforming those individuals and their families into
thriving community members.
The model is a collaborative approach of all sectors:
business, social and public services providing the
support for individuals and families to fulfill their path
to self-sufficiency beginning with a job and extending
to all facets of life.

GREYSTON WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
WE ARE ALL PATHMAKERS
Since 1982, Greyston has viewed employment as the first and
most critical piece on an individual’s path to breaking the
cycle of poverty. Building on Greyston Bakery’s
apprenticeship program, Greyston’s Workforce
Development provides individuals with the resources they
need to become successful, valuable employees.
Technical training, including nationally recognized
certification, is available in an assortment of professions
including security guard, office aid, culinary arts and
building maintenance.
Workforce Development candidates also receive intense
soft skills and work readiness training, financial literacy
training, adult basic education and GED preparation. Paired
with long-term, intensive case management and local job
placement in jobs with career advancement and wage growth
opportunities, these individuals are positioned to take
significant strides on their paths to self-sufficiency.

GREYSTON EARLY LEARNING CENTER
LEARNING THROUGH PLAY
For the past 20 years, providing parents with reliable
affordable, high-quality childare has been an important part
of Greyston’s mission. Through our Early Learning Center, we
give parents the support they need to pursue self-sufficiency,
while helping their children stay on track both
developmentally and academically.
Greyston’s Early Learning Center provides infant care,
as well as care for toddlers and preschoolers. To help
them prepare for elementary school, the center utilizes
the Creative Curriculum, which is fully aligned with
New York State’s prekindergarten guidelines and
Common Core standards.
Children in low income communities often fall behind in
cognitive and emotional development because they lack
access to educational resources and training between ages
zero and five. One of the most effective ways to close this
gap is to provide early childhood education and preschool.
For older children, the center has developed a school-aged
childcare program to provide after-school homework help
and recreational activities. Parents served by the Center
are able to pursue employment while knowing their
children are cared for in a safe, nurturing environment.

GREYSTON COMMUNITY GARDENS
COMMUNITY CENTER WITHOUT WALLS
Since 1995, Greyston’s Community Gardens have provided
greenspace and urban farming opportunities for the
Southwest Yonkers community.
In addition to beautifying and improving the environmental
health of this community, the gardens provide nutritional
food, educational opportunities, and an increased
sense of community.
The Enviro-Earth Club, which serves the children of our
gardeners, cultivates local environmental leaders by
educating and motivating urban youth about gardening and
the environment, while promoting healthy eating and living
among the participants and their families.
Special events including environmental fairs,
garden barbecues, art week, bubble week, garden and
snow clean-ups, cultural and holiday celebrations
are held year round.

GREYSTON YOUTH WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
CREATING PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS
Greyston offers young people, aged 14 to 24, the
opportunity to take control of their own paths by
providing extensive workforce development training to
increase their job readiness and overall employability.
Greyston’s training programs include culinary arts,
computer literacy, security guard and building maintenance
programs and offers youth education upgrading,
occupational skills, job placement, tutoring, mentorship,
soft skills training and service referrals.
Since April 2016, Greyston has effectively placed
29 out-of-school, unemployed youth in employment,
occupational skills training and post-secondary education
in Yonkers—achieving a 83% placement rate.
