Moose Gains a Village

away sometime last year. That had been the only life
sweet Moose had ever known.
And then the angel came. Grace Wolfe of Open Arms
Family Rescue persuaded the family of the now
deceased owner to sign Moose over to her, after she
had insisted upon cleaning up his dog house, and
putting down clean horse stall shavings and straw. It
was very evident form the moment Grace saw him that

to see glimpses of the “good life:” good quality food,
car rides, and tons of human affection, but he also
needed a proper vet exam. Grace, a rescue community
veteran, was having difficulty getting Moose into the vet
for an appointment, and she desperately wanted that to
happen very quickly based on his condition. She was
then contacted by the FernDog Rescue Foundation’s
very own Donna Buccellatto, who after reading Moose’s
heartbreaking story coordinated with FDRF’s incredible
vet partner, Verona Animal Hospital, to give Moose the
care that he needed. His life of neglect and his current
uncomfortable health status had no bearing on his
ability to give and receive love from everyone and
Again, while everyone hoped for better news with
respect to the medical diagnosis, it is so important to
remember that this story could have had a much sadder
ending. Instead, this sweet, forgiving, old soul will be
living out his final days completely loved and
cherished, and has united so many around him. So we
need to consider it a happy ending, for his sake, and for
the sake of the rescue community, who charges forward
together, working together and tirelessly to rescue and
save our furry friends in need. In Grace Wolfe’s very
own words, “it takes a village.” This “village” couldn’t
be any more special.
everything around him.
Sadly, his very thorough medical evaluation did not
result in good news, as sweet Moose has been
diagnosed with lymphoma. Treatment options are being
pursued, and he is not currently in any pain. It was
decided that he would become a permanent foster of
Grace’s rescue, Open Arms Family Rescue, where he
will get his “happily ever after,” for however long that
will be. He will be showered with love and spoiled
rotten by Grace and a wonderful network of caring
individuals who will give him the time of his life. He has

two of them are best friends and we often find them

Etta is our little lady! She lives with our daughter and son-in-law along with Claire and Finn (brother and sister
Chihuahua mixes). Etta is mellow and loves hanging out on the couch and going for walks. She is still opening up and
everyday we see a little more of her sweet, goofy personality. She loves tennis balls and cuddles from her family.
We are so grateful for the FDRF, their fosters, their volunteers and all of their hard work! We cannot imagine our
lives without Milo and Etta and their happy wiggle butts.

Ever think about fostering? Every day we get
pleas to help dogs in urgent need and we hate to
say no. The more foster homes we have, the more
lives we can save. We have a great foster program
that will be with you every step of the way during
your foster period!

Since January 2013, the FernDog Rescue Foundation has been

rescuing dogs and adopting them to their forever homes. Our
mission is a simple one: We strive to place our dogs in truly

adopted
“forever” homes, with an emphasis on personality, lifestyle
and compatibility. We believe the best way to do this is
through our foster program, which enables our dogs to be placed in low-stress homes
while they wait for their permanent families. We feel that it is this type of environment
that a dog is best able to prosper and thrive. Further, it allows our team to get to know
our dogs better, and to provide required and adequate training for any behavioral issues
that may exist, as well as treatment for any health issues.
Most of our dogs come from very sad situations: many were abandoned, owner
surrendered, or found wandering in the streets of our inner cities. We also rescue dogs
from high-kill shelters in the deep South. Every dog is unique, and every situation they
come from has helped to shape that particular dog’s personality. We have all heard it too
often. “I adopted a shelter dog and he is a nightmare.” “I adopted a shelter dog and she
is too jumpy for my small children.” These dogs become homeless once again, and at no
fault of their own. These types of situations can be avoided with a successful foster
program; a better foster program.
