That had been the only life sweet Moose had ever known. And then the angel came. Grace Wolfe of Open Arms Family Rescue persuaded the family of the now deceased owner to sign Moose over to her, after she had insisted upon cleaning up his dog house, and putting down clean horse stall shavings and straw. It was very evident form the moment Grace saw him that he was in desperate The rescue community is more often than not a unified group. While separate rescue organizations exist, the unity in the commitment to saving lives is truly inspiring. need of medical care. He was clearly deaf, had infected This is illustrated perfectly by a situation with an elderly eyes, dog named Moose. Moose had spent nearly his entire possible 11+ years of life confined in a New Jersey backyard full parasites, of filth, and without proper dwellings to protect him and what from the elements. Human affection was alien to him. appeared to Good nutrition and medical care were also alien to him. be swollen At some point he did have a companion; another dog had lived in the backyard with him until that dog passed more on 2 4 3 The FernDog Rescue Foundation Newsletter Volume 3, Issue 4 lymph nodes, but that did not stop him from showering he is already quite a celebrity within the northern New his angel with love and affection. He immediately began Jersey and beyond rescue community. to see glimpses of the “good life:” good quality food, car rides, and tons of human affection, but he also needed a proper vet exam. Grace, a rescue community veteran, was having difficulty getting Moose into the vet for an appointment, and she desperately wanted that to happen very quickly based on his condition. She was then contacted by the FernDog Rescue Foundation’s very own Donna Buccellatto, who after reading Moose’s heartbreaking story coordinated with FDRF’s incredible vet partner, Verona Animal Hospital, to give Moose the care that he needed. His life of neglect and his current uncomfortable health status had no bearing on his ability to give and receive love from everyone and Again, while everyone hoped for better news with respect to the medical diagnosis, it is so important to remember that this story could have had a much sadder ending. Instead, this sweet, forgiving, old soul will be living out his final days completely loved and cherished, and has united so many around him. So we need to consider it a happy ending, for his sake, and for the sake of the rescue community, who charges forward together, working together and tirelessly to rescue and save our furry friends in need. In Grace Wolfe’s very own words, “it takes a village.” This “village” couldn’t be any more special. everything around him. Sadly, his very thorough medical evaluation did not result in good news, as sweet Moose has been diagnosed with lymphoma. Treatment options are being pursued, and he is not currently in any pain. It was decided that he would become a permanent foster of Grace’s rescue, Open Arms Family Rescue, where he will get his “happily ever after,” for however long that will be. He will be showered with love and spoiled rotten by Grace and a wonderful network of caring individuals who will give him the time of his life. He has already had his very first ice cream, and that will be just one of the many wonderful To follow Moose's journey as he check’s off his bucket list and to follow Grace and her rescue Open Arms Family Rescue visit: www.facebook.com/fortheloveofmooseopenarms things he will get to Open Arms Family Rescue is based out of West Milford, experience for the NJ and their focus is the rescue and fostering of first time. Our grand-dogs, Milo and Etta, Etta, James and Jessica Graves were both FernDog rescues from Paterson. Milo is Paris, Holland Jancaitis and Nicholas Clarey my son's dog, but he spends a lot of time at his Grandparent's house with our Black Lab, Stoli. The Rhubarb and Tom Adams two of them are best friends and we often find them sleeping together in Stoli's crate or plotting ways to get extra treats! Milo is a big mush and loves his backyard; he patrols it endlessly with his favorite Kong in his mouth. Etta is our little lady! She lives with our daughter and son-in-law along with Claire and Finn (brother and sister Chihuahua mixes). Etta is mellow and loves hanging out on the couch and going for walks. She is still opening up and everyday we see a little more of her sweet, goofy personality. She loves tennis balls and cuddles from her family. We are so grateful for the FDRF, their fosters, their volunteers and all of their hard work! We cannot imagine our lives without Milo and Etta and their happy wiggle butts. ~ Sue Mosher 4 1 2 The FernDog Rescue Foundation Newsletter Volume 3, Issue 4 Upcoming Events The FernDog Rescue Foundation is out and about! Our mission is a simple one: We strive to place our dogs in truly 137 adopted “forever” homes, with an emphasis on personality, lifestyle and compatibility. We believe the best way to do this is through our foster program, which enables our dogs to be placed in low-stress homes while they wait for their permanent families. We feel that it is this type of environment that a dog is best able to prosper and thrive. Further, it allows our team to get to know our dogs better, and to provide required and adequate training for any behavioral issues that may exist, as well as treatment for any health issues. Most of our dogs come from very sad situations: many were abandoned, owner surrendered, or found wandering in the streets of our inner cities. We also rescue dogs from high-kill shelters in the deep South. Every dog is unique, and every situation they come from has helped to shape that particular dog’s personality. We have all heard it too often. “I adopted a shelter dog and he is a nightmare.” “I adopted a shelter dog and she is too jumpy for my small children.” These dogs become homeless once again, and at no fault of their own. These types of situations can be avoided with a successful foster program; a better foster program. “If we change nothing, nothing will change.” – Fernando Camacho Follow the FDRF on Instagram @ferndogrescue The FernDog Rescue Foundation www.ferndog.org www.facebook.com/ferndogrescuefoundation P.O.
