The evening will be filled with great music, and we encourage you to listen respectfully to each entry. We hope that you will have the chance to meet and speak with more than a few like-minded individuals tonight, but ask that you please conduct conversations outside of the listening room. This is the third year we have offered online MP3 submissions, and many songwriters took advantage of this method of entering. We hope you found the online submission process straightforward and simple. Special thanks goes to SDSG Director of Technology John Pape for his tireless efforts in developing and implementing the online entry process and maintaining the SDSG website. Tonight, judging will start shortly after 7:00. During the course of the evening, the judges will listen to and score each entry. When the judges finish listening, their scores will be tabulated and the winners announced. Please remember, entrants (or a representative) must be present at the awards presentation to win. Entrants who are not present or personally represented at the awards presentation will be disqualified from consideration for prizes and awards. So it is important that you or a representative is in attendance when the judging wraps up this evening and that you initial the registration sheet that will be available at that time. SDSG welcomes volunteers... this organization is run entirely by unpaid staff, and your help in making us stronger and better would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to approach a Board Member tonight, or contact us via our website, sdsongwriters.org, if you would like to become more deeply involved in the Guild. We also encourage visitors to join SDSG. Membership dues allow the Guild to conduct our member meetings, so please join. We will be conducting a drawing to give away a few prizes before we announce the Contest winners. Make sure you get your ticket, one free to each attendee, so you have a chance to win a prize. Page Four We appreciate your support and that of SDSG Members, the Board, and our Sponsors, and hope you find the Contest enjoyable. SDSG Board of Directors 2015 Nominees Mike Wojniak President Diane Waters Vice President John Pape Treasurer Stacy Kim Johnston Secretary SAN DIEGO SONGWRITERS GUILD 2014 SONG CONTEST RULES • Song entries will be judged by a committee consisting of industry professionals and songwriters. Judges will score entries on five criteria: lyrics, melody, form, originality and presentation. All styles of music are eligible, but instrumentals will receive no lyric score. • Each entry must be the contestant’s original work. • Contestants and their collaborators retain all rights to works submitted, but entries will not be returned by SDSG. • Contest is open to amateur songwriters, meaning one who has not been employed as a staff writer for a publishing company, who is not being paid for such services, and/or who has not received more than $2,500 in song royalty income within the past year. No song previously recorded and released through major national distribution in any country is eligible. • Past Grand Prize (Platinum) winners of the San Diego Songwriter’s Guild Song Contest are not eligible to enter the contest. All other previous entrants are eligible. • The contest is open to songwriters who are 18 years of age or older on the date of entry submission. Any entrant who is a minor in his or her jurisdiction of legal residence must submit written permission from his or her parent or legal guardian to participate in the contest. • Entrants (or a representative) must be present at the awards presentation on November 3, 2014 to win. Entrants who are not present or personally represented at the awards presentation will be disqualified from consideration for prizes and awards. • Prize winning songs from prior SDSG Song Contests may not be entered. This does not include songs from SDSG Performing Songwriters contests. • Winners are responsible for division of prizes and taxes. • No more than 70 entries will be accepted. • A maximum of two of entries will be accepted per writer. Cowrites count proportionately toward this total. (For example: an entry with two writers counts as 1/2 of one entry for each writer.) SDSG reserves the right to limit entries further. • Entries that violate these rules may be disqualified, and submitted fees will not be returned. All judges’ decisions are final. • SDSG is not responsible for late, lost, damaged, misdirected, postage due, stolen, or misappropriated entries. 2014 SDSG Song Contest Judges Marc “Mookie” Kaczor is the voice of indie artists in Southern California. A native of England, Peter Dyson came to San Diego from Austin, Texas in 2004. The third owner in Studio West’s forty year history, Peter spearheaded the studio expansion and remodeling project in 2005, determined to bring to fruition his vision of a world-class, fully integrated San Diego-based recording studio, comparable to the top facilities in Los Angeles. His thirteen years of professional expertise in strategic business planning, leadership training and human resources for Motorola’s Semiconductor Group in Austin and his passion for music have uniquely equipped Peter to assemble a top notch team of engineers and producers at Studio West, and to identify and develop services to better meet the needs of clients. As a drummer, Peter has played and recorded with bands in both England and Austin, and has a musical taste that is as diverse as the artists who have recorded at Studio West. Mark Spiro is an iconic American Songwriter. He is an established, award winning producer, recording artist, and accomplished musician, with a career that spans over two decades. Among his many accomplishments are 45 gold and platinum records, and eight solo albums. An Encinitas resident, Mark’s songs and productions are represented on records that have sold over 100 million copies world-wide. Mark’s songs have been cut by artists such as Selena, John Waite, REO Speedwagon, Cheap Trick, Julian Lennon, & Heart. His TV and film credits include “Top Gun”, “One Tree Hill” and “Fame”. Mark’s daughters Ruby and Summer are signed to Seany Records and active in the national songwriting scene as well as in live theater. San Diego resident and Patrick Henry High School alum Craig Goldy is best known for serving as DIO’s guitarist for several different stints from 1986 through 2010, appearing on several records and touring the world. Before DIO, he played in the bands Vengeance, Rough Cutt, and Giuffria. His writing credits include contributions to the catalogues of all of these bands and David Lee Roth, as well as his own solo material. In addition to continuing to record and perform with different bands and projects, Craig is active with Destiny Bridge, a program which enables unsigned StudioWest Recording in San Diego since 1971 SDSG Sponsors 858 592 9497 or Hunter@StudioWest.com La Jolla Brewing Company LaJollaBeer.com 7536 Fay Ave, La Jolla 92037 858 246 6759 Rarefied Recording rarefiedrecording.com 619-997-5934 info@rarefiedrecording.com Diane Waters diane-waters@sbcglobal.net Voice and Songwriting Coach Bandzoogle bandzoogle.com rarefiedrecording.com THE all-in-one website platform for musicians Studio West studiowest.com Hunter@StudioWest.com 858 592 9497 Rancho Bohemia studios Signature Sound Studios signaturesound.com info@signaturesound.com 858 268 0134 Mark Charles Hattersley Rancho Bohemia Studios Mark@RagingBohemian.com 619 823 3917 Songtown songtown.com Worldwide Songwriting Community MasterWriter www.masterwriter.com Capture inspiration wherever you are.
