EPHESUS (KUSADASI), TURKEY Explore the ruins of ancient Ephesus: the famed Library of Celsus, the huge amphitheater, chariot-marked marble roads, amazing mosaic sidewalks, and the superb, rarely opened Terrace Houses. SINOP, TURKEY Turkey’s northernmost city, Sinop sits on the neck of a peninsula on the Black Sea. See the ancient ruins of the Temple of Serapis and the citadel and wall on the seaside that have protected the city since the 7th century B.C. Other attractions include the 13thcentury Aladdin Mosque and the Byzantine-period Balatlar Church in the city’s Ada Quarter. TRABZON, TURKEY Trabzon is located in a beautiful setting on the Black Sea, backed by the steep Pontic Mountains and blessed with dense forests and subtropical flowers that blanket the countryside. Take in the many historical buildings in town, such as the Hagia Sophia and Saint Eugene churches. See the nearby Sumela Monastery, a stunning religious site, which dates to the 6th century. SOCHI, RUSSIA Enjoy a stroll along the seafront promenade and admire the lovely botanical gardens, the pretty Riviera Park with its statues and pools, and the palatial Matsesta Spa, renowned for its healing waters and adjacent to Stalinís dacha. Head into the countryside and visit a local tea plantation and be treated to some traditional Russian song and dance while you sip tea and eat homemade pie.
