SPEAKERS:
Stephen Cowley,
Ph.D.
CST# 2065380-40
TM
Scientific American, Inc.
Dr. Steven Cowley was
appointed as Chief Executive Officer of the United
Kingdom Atomic Energy
Authority in November
2009 having been Director of the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy
since September 2008. In October 2016 he
will become the President of Corpus Christi
College Oxford. Professor Cowley is a member
of the Prime Minister’s Council for Science and
Technology. In 2014 he was elected a Fellow
of the Royal Society and the Royal Academy of
Engineering, and in 2012 he was the recipient
of the Institute of Physics’s Glazebrook Medal
for leadership in physics. He has been a judge
of the Google Science Fair and a TED speaker.
Dr. Cowley received his B.A. from Oxford University and his Ph.D. from Princeton University.
Professor Cowley’s post-doctoral work was
at Culham and he returned to Princeton in
1987. He joined the faculty at the University
of California Los Angeles in 1993. From 2001
to 2003 he led the plasma physics group at

Imperial College, London. He has published
over 200 papers and articles on fusion energy,
astrophysics, and plasma physics.
Carolin Crawford,
Ph.D.
Dr. Carolin Crawford is
the Public Astronomer
at the Institute of Astronomy at the University of Cambridge. She
received her Ph.D. from
Cambridge University, and spent the next two
decades using X-ray, optical, and near-infrared
observations to investigate both the environments of distant quasars and nearby central
cluster galaxies. This research was carried out
alongside — and later eclipsed by — a growing
role in the public communication of science,
and she now gives many talks every year communicating the excitement of astronomy to as
wide an audience as possible; she also makes
regular appearances on national radio. The
UK Resource Centre for Women in Science,
Engineering and Technology recognized her
contributions with an Outstanding Achievement
award in 2009, and she was appointed Professor
of Astronomy for Gresham College 2011– 2015.
Dr. Crawford is also a College Lecturer, Fellow,
and Tutor at Emmanuel College where she
teaches mathematics.
Elizabeth Murray,
Ph.D.
Dr. Elizabeth (Beth) Murray
is a Professor of Biology
at Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio,
teaching graduate-level
human gross anatomy,
undergraduate anatomy and physiology, and
forensic science. She is one of only approximately 80 forensic anthropologists currently
certified by the American Board of Forensic
Anthropology (ABFA) and currently serves on
the ABFA Board of Directors. A Fellow in the
American Academy of Forensic Sciences, Dr.
Murray has participated in hundreds of forensic
investigations since 1986. She worked for three
years as a consultant to the National Missing
and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) for the
U.S. National Institute of Justice and continues to
manage 35 Ohio cold cases in which the victims’
identities are not known.

Do the Royal Military Tattoo (August 8)
SEMINARS
The conference fee is $1,575 and includes
seventeen (17) 60 to 90-minute seminars
— plus each speaker will do one Q&A.
Dr. Murray lent her expertise for the National
Geographic miniseries Skeleton Crew and has
appeared on America’s Most Wanted, Skeleton
Stories, New Detectives, The Decrypters and
Forensic Files. An award-winning teacher,
Dr. Murray created The Great Courses’Trails
of Evidence: How Forensic Science Works,
released in 2012 and Forensic History: Crimes,
Frauds, and Scandals in 2014. Dr. Murray’s
publications include numerous contributions to
the Proceedings of the American Academy of
Forensic Sciences, as well as books and chapters providing anthropological analyses.
Richard Wolfson,
Ph.D.
Dr. Richard Wolfson
is Benjamin F. Wissler
Professor of Physics at
Middlebury College, and
also teaches in Middlebury’s Environmental
Studies Program. Dr. Wolfson holds a master’s
degree in environmental studies from the
University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in physics
from Dartmouth.
Wolfson’s current research involves the eruptive
behavior of the Sun’s corona, as well as
terrestrial climate change. Other published
work encompasses such diverse fields as
medical physics, plasma physics, solar energy
engineering, electronic circuit design, nuclear
issues, observational astronomy, and theoretical
astrophysics. His books Nuclear Choices:
A Citizen’s Guide to Nuclear Technology (MIT
Press) and Simply Einstein: Relativity Demystified
(W.W. Norton) exemplify Wolfson’s interest in
making science accessible to nonscientists. He
has also written several textbooks, published in
Scientific American, and writes for World Book
Encyclopedia. He has produced courses for The
Great Courses, including Einstein’s Relativity
and the Quantum Revolution: Modern Physics
for Nonscientists (1999), Physics in Your Life
(2004), Earth’s Changing Climate (2007), Physics
and Our Universe: How It All Works (2011), and
Understanding Modern Electronics (2014).
Wolfson has spent sabbaticals at the National
Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder,
Colorado; at St. Andrews University in Scotland;
and at Stanford University. In 2009 he was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
