Bounderies and Revelation
As we approach the
end of the academic year
and the festival of Shavuot,
the image of the Israelites
winding through the
desert from Egypt toward
Mt. Sinai is speaking to
me. Throughout these
seven weeks of wandering,
the community complains,
pushes back against Moses
to establish boundaries, and learns
a thing or two about the Torah they
will soon receive. This, according to
some commentaries, is all to prepare
them to receive the Torah. Their
process is a reminder of the process
our students go through. Yes, they
test boundaries and sometimes
complain, but they also pick up a
thing or two along the way. And what
are we preparing them for? Their
own revelation; their own moment
when all of their Jewish learning will
click and they will see
nothing short of G-d and
the Torah being handed
down to them. We also
know that the Israelites
don’t understand all of
Torah in a moment at
Mt. Sinai and that the
process of revelation is
ongoing. May it be so for
all of our students.
In the fourth chapter of Pirkei
Avot, we read “Ben Zoma says: ‘Who
is wise? The one who learns from
everyone.’” As the academic year is
coming to a close, I hope that LBSRS
has been a place where our students
have learned from their teachers,
from me, and most importantly,
from each other. It is the learning
from each other that will build their
relationship to each other and to
Judaism.

The FLAME
Membership Committee
As you’ll recall, about 18 months ago,
we all participated in a congregational
sur ve y. The results inspired the
Membership Committee to look again at
how we encourage Relational Judaism,
and how we can support deep and
meaningful relationships between and
amongst our congregants.
In the past few months, your hard
working Membership Committee has
been investigating and developing new
initiatives, to support what you told us
in the survey.
So...are you ready? Hold on...this is
going to be FABULOUS!
We are launching (some would say
re-launching) Shabbat dinners in the
home. On Friday, August 19, families will
gather, to welcome Shabbat. On Saturday,
September 12, we will extend the magic
of the day. We will break bread, get to
know one another, explore the meaning of
Judaism…in short, have beautiful and
nourishing evenings.
To make this a success, we need your
help.
Please consider hosting a few fellow
congregants. Your meal can be your meal:
potluck (or not), kid friendly (or not),
formal (or not)….
Please consider signing up as a guest.
You’ll be graciously welcomed and your
soul will be nourished.
If neither of these dates work for you,
fear not! More dates will be available in
the fall.
We’ll take care of all the logistics,
matching kosher requirements, kid
friendly homes, very observant, NOT
very observant…..you get the idea. You
sign up and we’ll take care of the rest.
We’ve been working hard to honor
what you told us in the survey. Here’s
an opportunity to help us learn, once
again, from you. Join in and let’s make
this a success! Email shabbat@pjtc.net
or call Beryl Strauss, Executive Director

PJTC Board Of Directors Report
May 23, 2016 Meeting
The Spiritual Task Force was one of
several formed as a result of the Strategic
Planning process. Susan Auerbach, Chair of
that task force, presented a comprehensive
report of their recommendations. A
plan for the implementation of certain
recommendations will be presented to
the Board in the near future.
Faith Segal, President, has appointed
Keri Axel to the position of VP-Planning,
to replace Brian Mark, who has resigned.
Faith has appointed Stacey Sharp as
Secretary, replacing Keri.
The Board approved a new mission
statement for the synagogue. The
statement was prepared by the Mission/
Vision Task Force. A copy of it will
appear on the website and in next month’s
FLAME.
The Board approved the continuation
of the Sponsored Gift Membership
Program for another year beginning in
July. Thirty-three families who joined
in the first year of the program are now
dues-paying members. This has resulted
in over $28,000 in income received from
those families in the current fiscal year.
The issue of employee family leave
policy was discussed. Faith will appoint
a committee to consider the issue and
2
report back to the Board with their
recommendations at the June Board
meeting.
Synagogue finances are projected to
be on budget for this fiscal year.
The new Facilities Committee is
preparing a recommendation to the
Board of various maintenance and facelift
projects. This includes interior and
exterior painting as well as examining
the carpets and floors to assess needed
repairs.
Several months ago, the Board
approved a project to install solar panels
on the roof of the main building. The
Facilities Committee is reviewing the
project and, in conjunction with those
who proposed the project, will soon be
reporting back to the Board.
Beryl Strauss, Executive Director,
reported that the new website is now
operational and will continue to be
upgraded.
Our new rabbi, Noam Raucher, will
join the synagogue on July 13. Please
welcome him.
The next Board meeting, is tentatively
scheduled for June 20 or June 22. The
actual date will be announced shortly.
Respectfully submitted by Jeff
Landau.

energetic group of seventeen-year-old Israelis, one of several
such troupes travelling across North America this summer
as ambassadors of the State of Israel. The ten teenagers,
five girls and five boys, come from all around Israel. Their
families hail from many different backgrounds: Sephardic,
Ashkenazi, Yemenite, and Ethiopian. Each one brings his
or her life experiences to the Caravan. When they return
to Israel in the fall, they’ll be entering their senior year in
high school after which they’ll be joining the Israel Defense
Forces.
It’s customary for the Scouts to be hosted by synagogue
families for the evening after the performance. If you’d be

early afternoons at Wohlman Hall. Our first gathering will
be June 26 at 12:30 ... coming up this month.
Marty Kirschen and others have collections of songs
which we will listen to or sing along to. The songs will be on
cds, audio cassettes and video. and if we have some piano
players – that too. Don’t worry about singing out of tune ….
off notes will likely cancel each other out. No need to know
Yiddish. We will have song sheets.
Marty has hosted such gatherings before, some with
Annie Cheslow. They have proved fun and meaningful!
We will have some discussion as well. We also look forward
to many of our participants bringing along or suggesting
songs, as well as being guest song leaders – sorry, no solos
permitted.
We will have snacks and beverages and anticipate our get
togethers to last about one to one-and-a-half hours.
If you are considering coming, please call or email Marty
at (626) 797-3280 or mkirs54321@aol.com.

B'nai Mitzvah
Book Club
by Liz Green, Committee Chair
Thursday, June 9, 7:30 PM will be the final meeting of the
PJTC Book Club, due to a dwindling number of attendees.
Thanks to all of you who joined us for our lively discussions
and for suggesting many interesting books.
Thursday, June 9 – Two Years Eight
Months and Twenty-Eight Nights by Salman
Rushdie. The author concocts a fantastic
fable about colliding worlds. Sometime in
the near future, a storm reopens the slits
between the Earth and a jinni-filled realm
above. A war with familiar stakes begins.
It pits reason against fear-based religious
fervor, and wreaks havoc for 1,001 nights.
“Courgeous and liberating…a breathless
mash-up of wormholes, mythical creatures, current affairs and
disquisitions on philosophy and theology,” – The New York
Times Book Review.
Ezra Axel, son of congregants
Doug and Keri Axel, will be called
to the Torah on June 18 as a bar
mitzvah. He is a seventh grader at
Sequoyah School in Pasadena. He
has one sister (Talya, age 10), and a
brother (Eli, age 8). Ezra likes to play
the cello, tap, swim and mountain
bike. He is an alum of the Weizmann
Day School, which he attended
through fifth grade. Ezra's mitzvah project is to
collect gently-used children's and
youth books, index them, and
donate them to Beardslee Elementary, a public school in Duarte,
California, which has no books in its library. He will also be
honoring educators during his bar mitzvah ceremony, including
those at B'nai Simcha Preschool, Weizmann Day School, the
Jewish Federation Jewish Youth Orchestra, and LBSRS.
A Note From The South Pasadena Juggling Club
Hannah Lily Owen will be called
to the Torah as a bat mitzvah on
June 25, Shabbat Behaalotecha.
The daughter of Andy and Jenny
Owen, big sister to Sophie, and
granddaughter of Jack and Debby
Singer, Hannah will be the sixth
person in her extended family to
reach this milestone at PJTC, where
she represents the family's fourth
generation of membership.
Hannah is an honor student, avid
reader, and an accomplished dancer.
As dance is dear to her heart, her
mitzvah project is to raise funds for
the Dizzy Feet Foundation, which was created by producer Nigel
Lythgoe and director Adam Shankman to support, improve
and increase access to dance education in the United States,
especially for children in low-income areas. Online donations
can be made via dizzyfeetfoundation.org.
If you wandered into the Social Hall on Tuesday nights, you
would have seen people juggling balls, clubs, rings and other
objects as well as unicycling and other circus skills. The South
Pasadena Juggling Club has been meeting at PJTC during the
“short day” months. We are devoted to teaching these skills to
others and it has been a lot of fun to have members of the PJTC
community; kids after Hebrew School, USY members, and some
adventurous PJTC adults join us. With the longer days, we have
moved to our “summer home,” the South Pasadena Library
lawn, on El Centro between Fairview and Diamond from 6:00
PM-dark on Tuesdays. There is more info on our Facebook
page. We invite you to join us, we provide equipment and are
happy to teach beginners.
Interfaith Study Group
by Cecilia Fox, PJTC representative on ISG Planning Committee,
with Norma Pratt
The group is composed of members of Pasadena Jewish
Temple & Center (Cecilia Fox & Norma Pratt are the PJTC
representatives on the ISG Planning Committee) with members
of All Saints Episcopal Church, Pasadena, and the Islamic
Center of Southern California in Los Angeles. ISG meetings
have been held in rotation at our institutions since 2007.
Next Meeting: September 11, 5:00 to 7:30 PM at PJTC. Watch
for announcement of the topic in our September FLAME,
We meet to learn from each other respectfully in the spirit
of friendship, and all who are interested are welcome to join
us. It is a most congenial group. After the one-hour meeting
we share a vegetarian potluck meal, and introduce ourselves
to those at our table. We also discuss the presentation, and
formulate questions. A question and answer period with the
speaker follows.
Please contact Cecilia Fox with questions, suggestions for
programs, or to be added to our email list: cecilia.r.fox@gmail.com.

The Caring Community Program presents:
Writing Your Ethical Will
Thursday, June 9, at 2:00 PM
Back by popular demand, this workshop is offered by Claire
Gorfinkel, Coordinator of the Caring Community Program at
PJTC. Every adult who has children or owns property should
have a will. But does your property define who you are or how
you want to be remembered?
What ethical or spiritual legacy do you want to leave to your
family, friends, and community? We will look at some examples
of ethical wills and begin the process of writing our own. This
program is free and open to the public. It will take place in
Wohlmann Hall at PJTC, and refreshments will be served. For
further information, call (626) 798-1161

by Andy Schwarz, President
I would like to thank the members of the Nominating
Committee for their work: Jerry Halpert (Chair), Fred
Rotenberg, Arthur Taus, and Barry Krasner. I hope that you can
attend our voting and installation of this new Board of Directors
on Monday night, July 11, at 7:00 PM; we will have drinks and
dessert, followed by our regular monthly board meeting.
It has been a great honor to serve as Men's Club President
for the past two years. That time has been very successful in
helping to support the many youth programs and activities that
we help fund, including USY, Louis B. Silver Religious School,
B'nai Simcha Preschool, Weizmann Day School, the Jewish
Youth Orchestra and the PJ Library. One last item--the Men's Club has donated funds to PJTC
during the last several years for camping scholarships, Please
contact Rabbi Silverstein to apply for these funds. Thank you
all, Andy
June will be a very active month for the PJTC Men's Club.
We will start it off on Saturday night, June 4, by participating
in honoring Judy and Phil Callahan for their 40 years of service
to the PJTC community. The following Saturday night, June 11, the Men's Club will
be serving ice cream for Shavuot. Erev Shavuot is always a fun
night and I hope you can make it. On Friday night, June 17, we
will honor Ezra Axel on the occasion of his bar mitzvah, and
on Friday night, June 24, we will honor Hannah Owen on the
occasion of her bat mitzvah. Mazel tov to the Axel and Owen

Israel Indivisible examines the many
political twists and turns that make Israel
the world’s most controversial nation.
From Abram and the Promise, to the
fall of the Ottoman Empire, the film
examines the historical, archeological,
legal and biblical evidence for the
ancient and modern state of Israel. At
the center of all this history is a group
of people who are arguably the world’s
most persecuted.
The story of the many is tied together in the story of the
one and that one is Israel.
Join PJTN as it takes you on a historical journey to
uncover the truth surrounding the controversial issue that
is rooted in God’s eternal Covenant with Israel.

Many many thanks to my hard working Sisters of PJTC
Sisterhood who were my backbone for the last two years!
Hugs to everyone, Debbie
by Debbie Guest, President, PJTC Sisterhood
For the last two years I have had the
honor of serving as the President of
Sisterhood. It is time to move on, and
though I learned a lot on the job, there is
always something new to discover. Lucky
for us, our incoming President, Judy
Callahan, requires no learning curve.
The transition will be very smooth.
Sisterhood exists to support the many branches of our PJTC
community with fundraisers, programming, and volunteering
where needed. We have a lot of fun along the way. It is a
wonderful way to meet new friends or strengthen relationships
with familiar faces. It is an opportunity for personal growth
as we take on leadership roles or learn new skills. It is open to
women of all ages. Sisterhood welcomes new ideas to enhance
the experiences of our members.

What an evening you gave us! I want to thank ALL of you:
the students, parents, and especially Melissa Levy and Jake Levy,
who gave 150 of us a lovely evening. The décor, the food, and
the entertainment were wonderful. The advance planning and
practice paid off, no details were missed.
On behalf of the members, parents, grandparents and friends
who attended, I want to thank everyone involved. It was so very
special. We are very proud of you all.

It’s Time to Think about the Galpert
Scholarship Award
Torah Fund
by Bobbi Sloan, Sisterhood V{. Rae Goodstein Memorial Torah Fund
The 2015-2016 Torah Fund campaign
has come to an end. We received a total of
$10, 727 for the general fund and $120 for
the scholarship fund. Unfortunately, we were
not able to reach our goal of $12,000. I want to thank all of you who gave a donation this year.
Education is one of the most important means of transferring
the wealth of tradition from one generation to the next. When
you contribute to Torah Fund, you are investing in the future
of our children. An investment in knowledge pays the best
interest!
Torah Fund supports the Jewish
Theological Seminary in New York, the
Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los
Angeles, Schechter Institute of Jewish
Studies in Israel, and Semenario Rabinico
Latinoamericano in Buenos Aires, Thank you, once again, for supporting Torah Fund. Your
generosity is sincerely appreciated.
It’s that time of the year when we
send out information about the Galpert
Scholarship applications. The Galpert
Scholarship Fund was started in 1990, and
thirty awards have been given in twenty-six
years! We could not be prouder! Here are
snippets about two of the recipients so you
can kvell over their accomplishments.
I grew up with Rabbi Galpert and his
teachings about the love for lifelong learning. Now that I am a
professor at California State Unniversity, Northridge in Special
Education in the teacher preparation and Master’s Degree
programs for candidates in Special Education/Deaf Education, I
hope I am successfully sharing his love and messages with
future generations. I am honored and humbled to be a past
recipient of this award in his name.

Currently, I completed all of the course work necessary for
my PsyD. I am finishing my position as a Psychology Practicum
Student at the Arizona State Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona
through the summer and will continue my clinical experience here
as a Psychology Intern beginning in September. Once I finish my
year-long internship in September 2017, I will receive my PsyD!
(And hopefully move back to California!) Thank you, Rabbi

Shavuot is the Festival of the First Fruits – Chag
Habikkurim.
In keeping with this tradition, we are asking our
congregation to bring their bikkurim of fresh fruit and
vegetables to the Temple from Friday, June 10, to Sunday,
June 12 – the weekend of Shavuot.
All of our bikkurim will be donated to Foothill Unity
Center, to be distributed to needy families in our local
community.
Please bring your fruit and vegetables to the Temple any
time Fri. – Sun., June 10-12. The focus is on the Le'yl Shavuot
TED Talks on Saturday evening, June 11, but another time
will be fine. Leave produce on the table, baskets, barrels in
the front lobby.
Come on in, look around: Our big 40% off sale is
continuing! There are still lots of nice items available for
weddings, graduations, and birthdays (Father’s Day too!) You
can stock up for future needs at these bargain prices.
New merchandise will be coming in for the fall grand
opening.
Hours:Tuesday, 4:00 - 6:00 PM, Sunday, 9:30 AM - 12:30
PM or, by appointment, call temple office (626) 798-1161.

Melissa Levy article continued from page 1
teenager involved in the program) graciously hosted teens from
out of town for the weekend. Many thanks to all who made this
fantastic weekend possible. The rest of April was spent training for our “Eateasy,
Speakeasy” event on May 1. And WOW, what a fantastic event
it was! I am so proud of our youth, over 40 of whom actively
participated . They learned how to cook a five-course meal, to
delegate and manage time, and to tinker with recipes. The servers
learned to work in teams, and to speak to adults in a friendly
and professional manner (“Is everything prepared to your liking
this evening?”) The decorations team implemented a beautiful
vision for the look of the evening. The Charleston dance team
inspired everyone to join them on the dance floor. Members of
the Jewish Youth Orchestra played an excellent set. And, close
to 150 members of the PJTC community came out to support
this very ambitious endeavor. Members of every generation and
cohort were represented, and there were smiles and looks of awe
and pride across the board. A well-deserved yasher koach to
our INCREDIBLE youth who each volunteered a minimum of
20 hours of their time, and most averaged close to 40, to make
this event such a success. Word continues to spread, and we are
grateful that donations from those who weren’t able to make the
event are still coming in! They say it takes a village, right? So in addition to those 40something youth and their families: Thank you to Kaileh Pistol

for swooping in to save the day when table linens didn’t arrive
and for helping with decorations; to Debbie Noble and Jodi
Kinzler for all the last-minute shopping; to Nancy Carlton for
her detailed notes after our dress rehearsal; to Sue Hogan for
inspiring our dancers; to Anna Bruck for the fabric shopping; to
both Paula Svonkin and Balabusta Catering for loaning us trays,
stands, and waitstaff aprons; Sue Sanford for sewing Kadima
server aprons; to the countless families who donated fresh citrus
fruit; and to all those whose names I haven’t listed because we
were so blessed to have that many people offer to help without
my even having to ask: todah rabah.
There are four volunteers that really stand out: I would like
to make a special shout–out to Karen Levin, Jake Levy, Aaren
Heller, and Ricki Lane–each of whom also spent many additional
hours in the hot kitchen, helping to ensure that our youth could
safely and effectively cook and serve a five-course meal for 150. A
special donation has been made to Union Station Homeless
Services in their honor. In mid-May, USY members enjoyed their free time at
the Renaissance Faire, and at the end of May they attended
the annual USY Regional Convention. Our chapter is in the
process of electing next year’s leadership board, and is already
beginning to plan more amazing programming for next year.
The excitement never stops around here!
