Dear Reader,
We look forward to welcoming you as our
guest at EuroShop 2014. Under the trade fair
slogan of Retail_MADE BY WANZL, we will take
our place at the start line as one of the largest
exhibitors. Dynamism and progress are the key
characteristics of the Wanzl Arena, designed as
a world-class sports stadium in which we set the
pace for the international retail sector. For the
benefit of visitors from around the world, Wanzl
has used its current ranges in Retail Systems and
Shop Solutions to form strong teams, optimally
equipped with future-oriented innovations and
classic product designs that have enjoyed many
years of success.
As a system supplier, Wanzl knows the strengths
of a team in which each individual product is
allowed to play in its favoured position: the
products combine to create an overall level of
performance that wows the audience and sets
standards internationally. We make tactical
adjustments to this team in line with countryspecific requirements – for every retail format,
for food and non-food, from functional to exclusive,
from experience-oriented solutions to customised
solutions, and of course in response to any new
developments. The Wanzl team, which is managed
and coordinated by the head office in Germany
and is active globally with production sites, sub
sidiaries and agencies all over the world, uses its
role as the pace-setter to provide professional
coaching to the international retail sector at any
time and in any situation. This service is always
provided in a client-specific manner, in order to
help provide the decisive advantage in terms of
customer retention and market turnover.
The new website www.wanzl.com provides an
additional alternative for efficient background
support and can be accessed at any time. It uses
a systematic approach for quick access ordered
by Wanzl business areas, products and sectors,
plus additional services, download options and
the opportunity to interact with personal contacts.
With over six decades of experience and passion
for worldwide retail, Wanzl is more certain than
ever that what counts is partnership, along with
the personal contact, the continuity and the
investment power provided by a family company
in its third generation. Therefore, as a partner of
Technibilt, the market leader for shopping trolleys
in North America, Wanzl has been serving national
retailers and international retail customers in the
USA, Canada and Mexico since 2012.
We are also able to report on innovations in the
Wanzl business areas of Logistics + Industry,
Airport+ Security Solutions and Hotel Service. We
are particularly pleased to report on our
current cooperation with London Heathrow
airport, which Wanzl will shortly be providing with
over 12,000 luggage trolleys.
Happy reading!

EuroShop 2014: combining dynamics with emotion
Wanzl makes shopping a pleasure and will be presenting
itself as an initiator and a partner of international retail at
EuroShop 2014 in Düsseldorf. Visitors to hall 13/A89 will
be greeted by one of the largest trade fair stands show
casing the latest product ranges offered by Retail Systems
and Shop Solutions, all presented under the trade fair
slogan of Retail_MADE BY WANZL. Attendees from all over
the world will be welcome to pay Wanzl a visit. Olaf Mörk,
Wanzl Marketing Director, gives us an informative sneak
preview and discusses the outlook for the future.
Wanzl is a trendsetter and provides ideas to the global
retail sector. What will greet attendees visiting the
company’s trade fair stand?
Olaf Mörk: The theme of Retail_MADE BY WANZL promises
an emotionally engaging approach and represents the
consistent continuation of the EuroShop series MADE BY
WANZL. This made its debut in 2008 and continued in 201 1,
focusing on the core themes of innovation and strong
partnerships. The ability to combine continuity with new ideas
and innovations is one of the strengths of the system supplier
Wanzl. Retailers the world over know Wanzl to be a reliable
partner with strong investment power, an active dynamic
approach and fully customer-oriented service. The company’s
appearance at the 2014 trade fair reflects these capabilities,
as Wanzl will be presenting itself as a platform for the future
of international retail.
How will Wanzl, one of the largest exhibitors at EuroShop,
be presenting its stand at the 2014 trade fair?
Highly effective purchasing interacts with all the senses,
initiating a desire to uncover new things. Our trade fair stand
bears the hallmarks of this intensity, both inside and out. It
is designed like a major sports arena with corresponding
aesthetics including an athletics track, turning each visit into
an exciting and eventful race through the innovative world of
Wanzl. The bar and the first-floor lounge with a panoramic
view of the trade fair stand provide visitors with an opportunity
for networking. The best way to begin is
to scan the QR code on this page in order to
start our latest EuroShop video clip and
immerse yourself in the highly interactive
world of Wanzl.
What are the most important innovations
for 2014?
The current Retail Systems and Shop
Solutions range for the 2014 season will be
presented on the main field at the Wanzl
sports arena. A highly promising newcomer
is Design Trolley, a study into shopping
trolleys with a high level of potential for
implementation. BakeOff, the new modular
baked goods system, will be introduced as
a high-quality island for hosting fresh goods
in the context of modern retail. As they
explore the sports arena, visitors will be
treated to live displays of additional inno
vations and classics across the entire retail
sector – from discounters through to
exclusive premium stores. Using a series
of executive box-style viewing areas around
Centre Court, Wanzl will celebrate its role as
a world-renowned shopfitter by introducing
the crowd to its elite performers in the
Shop Solutions retail category. The world
of the senses will be the dominant factor
in the fields of outdoor, fresh goods,
beverages, cosmetics, food products and
special ranges. As personal partners who
are willing to listen to all questions and
requirements, the highly motivated members
of the international Wanzl sales team will
be there to accompany customers from all
over the world to ensure that they enjoy an
exciting visit to our sports arena.

Environmentally friendly technologies, online apps, and
going back to the city – Michael Gerling, Managing Director
of EHI Retail Institute, on the retail industry in 2014
Reservations have flooded in for
EuroShop 2014. What makes this trade fair
so attractive?
Only EuroShop provides a global overview of
all current developments in the retail industry
for all relevant investment areas. The fact that
it only comes round once every three years
means visitors are guaranteed to see real
innovations and world premières. Decisionmakers meet exhibitors here at the right time.
What are the current trends? Where is the
retail industry growing?
The retail industry is becoming increasingly
good at attuning itself to specific target
groups and concepts are increasingly being
individually tailored to ever smaller customer
target groups; for example, convenience
offerings in the food sector or gastronomic
concepts integrated into supermarkets. We
are also seeing retail increasingly moving
away from developments on greenfield sites
and instead moving towards inner-city stores.
There is also a growing trend for using
materials and technologies that ensure a
sustainable business set-up that protects
resources. Overall, technology is making
massive inroads at stationary outlets:
electronic displays and Internet applications
are replacing posters and signs, and
customers can use their smartphones to
obtain up-to-the-minute store information
or even scan all their purchases.
With the exhibition covering over 110,000 sq. m of exhibition
space, spread across 17 halls, which areas should visitors
opt for to find out about innovations and the future of the
retail industry?
If you are visiting EuroShop, it is best to see all the halls.
Technology, shopfitting and visual merchandising – wherever
you look there are innovations and interesting concepts
waiting to be discovered. On average, visitors spend two
days at EuroShop, and you shouldn’t plan to spend any less
time than that. As well as the exhibits there are numerous
events, forums and award ceremonies.
Shopfitting has a big presence at EuroShop. EHI is publishing
a new edition of its ‘Ladenmonitor’ investigation in honour
of the trade fair. What are the initial findings of the study?
A surprising find was that multi-channel concepts still have
little influence on the design of shopping spaces. We had
expected that some areas would be set up in local stores
for the collection or return of online purchases, but current
findings do not indicate this. However, what we are seeing is
a trend for considerably enhanced shopping spaces in the
face of increasing online sales. Today more than ever, the
stationary section of the retail must emit excitement and a
pleasant shopping atmosphere, a factor that accelerates the
rate of renovation. The boom of EuroShop is partly the result
of the growing online sector. Further topical information will
be available at EuroShop.

About Technibilt
WANZL INTERNATIONAL zuvvvvv
US expansion goes west
With the acquisition of Technibilt, the Wanzl Group is
expanding its business activities into North America. We
speak to Michael E. A. Marks, President & CEO of Technibilt.
It’s been two years since the Wanzl Group took over
Technibilt. What is the benefit for international retailers?
Michael E. A. Marks: Technibilt and Wanzl have a lot in
common. Both companies have been in the market for
more than 60 years as customer-focused trade partners for
the retail industry. Like Wanzl, Technibilt can look back on
decades of traditional family ownership. Wanzl acquired a
minority stake in Technibilt back in 2006 and increased this
interest to 100 % in 2012. The acquisition of Technibilt by
Wanzl offers a unique supply opportunity for retailers not
only in North America but across the globe. Technibilt is
the biggest and most successful manufacturer of shopping
trolleys in North America. The company holds a market
share of more than 50 % in the USA and Canada – the most
significant consumer market in the world. Wanzl is the global
market leader for shopping trolleys and one of the world’s
largest retail partners. Now that Technibilt is integrated into
the Wanzl Group, its North American customers – not to
mention Wanzl’s international retail customers – can benefit
from local expertise and innovation plus excellent Wanzl-like
service in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Can you provide us with some facts and figures?
In the first year after the acquisition by Wanzl, we sold
860,000 shopping trolleys – 100,000 more than in the previous
year. We are anticipating a volume of 950,000 shopping
trolleys for 2014, a goal we aim to achieve by securing new
customers and expanding our business with existing
customers like Walmart, the leading US retailer. Technibilt
currently does supply half of Walmart’s annual demand for
shopping trolleys; over the last 18 months we have succeeded
in winning the business of Walmart stores in seven additional
states. Since its launch in the summer of 2013, the new
Caroline’s Cart with built-in seat for people with special needs
has received a great response. In North America there is also
a demand for the ergonomic and environmentally friendly
Wanzl GT26 eco shopping basket made from 100% recyclable
plastic. In 2013 we started the remanufacturing for shopping
trolleys in North America after having set up the necessary
infrastructure and state-of-the-art recycling equipment to
help protect both the environment and our resources.
In Canada Technibilt still operates under the established
brand name Cari-All. Since the acquisition by Wanzl we have
increased the market share in Canada to more than 50 % and
doubled the number of shopping trolleys sold.
What are things looking like today?
Technibilt is now fully integrated within the
Wanzl Group. The transfer of knowhow and
successful joint product developments are
established. Wanzl’s commitment is making
real headway within the US shopping trolley
market. Technibilt is continuing to invest
heavily in machinery and tooling with a fiveyear plan to reach the same technology level
as in Europe.
Technibilt opened the new distribution
centre in Las Vegas/Nevada in March 2013.
What is the goal of this venture?
Technibilt is the leading supplier of shopping
trolleys on the densely populated East Coast
of the USA and in the Midwest. Our goal
is to expand our presence and our logistics
by optimizing delivery times, shortening
distances and ensuring cost-effective freight
costs for all the states west of the Rocky
Mountains. We have two direct sales staff in
Los Angeles and San Francisco supporting
retailers in California and the other states on
the West Coast. Safeway is one of our new
customers in the area. We are aiming for a
market share of 50 % in this part of the US
too by the end of 2015.
Technibilt has been part of the Wanzl Group
since 2012 and has over 400 employees
specialising in the production of shopping
trolleys, which are manufactured in Newton,
North Carolina/USA. The entire metal production process takes place here, including
surface treatment and assembly for shopping
trolleys. The processing of plastic for shopping
trolley components such as castor wheels
takes place at Rondi, the Montreal/Canadabased subsidiary.

Trolleywise App attracts widespread UK support
Wanzl UK are leading the way to help
reduce the high incidence of abandoned
trolleys in the UK, with the launch of their
unique Trolleywise App for smartphones,
introduced in the summer of 2013. With
over 30 million smartphone users in the UK,
the app has been welcomed by the British
public as well as major retailers, the Canal
and River Trust, the Department for
Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and
the Environment Minister, Lord de Mauley,
who said: “This innovative app gives shoppers and residents the chance to take swift
action to tackle the thousands of shopping
trolleys scattered around our streets or
thrown in rivers and canals. It will play an
important role in making our neighbourhoods
more pleasant places to live.” Since launch in
June 2013, the Trolleywise App has attracted
over 10,000 downloads for both iOS and
Android smartphone users who use GPS
to locate and report trolleys found in store
neighbourhoods, parks, rivers and canals.
Widespread media coverage has included
features in most national newspapers as
well as the popular BBC TV magazine
programme ‘The One Show’ and a number
of regional BBC news channels.
Managing Director of Wanzl UK Group, Dean Rolland said:
“We have made a substantial impact in managing the
abandoned trolley challenge, with Trolleywise retrieving
almost one million trolleys since 2012. The Trolleywise App
makes it very easy for people to report trolleys quickly and
accurately and with the participation and support of the
majority of the UK’s largest retailers, this has had a positive
impact on local communities.” For every trolley collected
by Trolleywise, Wanzl makes a donation to independent
charity Trees for Cities. The campaign hopes to raise enough
money to plant at least 2,000 new trees in Britain’s urban
areas each year. Sharon Johnson, CEO of Trees for Cities,
comments: “We often come across abandoned trolleys as
part of our tree-planting work in local communities and
we’re delighted that Trolleywise has launched this app to
make reporting these trolleys so simple. And we’re thrilled
that through the Trolleywise App, Wanzl’s contribution will
help us achieve our tree-planting targets for cities across the
UK.” To find out more about the Trolleywise App and how

Tesco makes shopping something to look forward to
with Wanzl trolleys
Wanzl UK have secured the supply and management of
shopping trolleys to Tesco stores in 6 European countries
and Turkey. Quality has been an overriding consideration in
the award of the contract to Wanzl, one of the largest retail
solution providers in the world.
Wanzl have begun shipping initial contract requirements,
which will ensure a steady supply of high quality trolleys to
over 4,000 Tesco stores in Poland, Czech Republic,
Hungary, Slovakia, Turkey, Republic of Ireland and the UK.
Managing Director of Wanzl UK Group, Dean Rolland said
that confirmation of the contract by Tesco in 2013 was an
important breakthrough for Wanzl with one of the largest
retailers in the world. “For years, Wanzl has set the quality
and performance benchmark for shopping trolleys around the
world and this is significant recognition of the cost-saving
and service benefits which an investment in original quality
can deliver. We are delighted that this also marks a return to
European-based supply for Tesco after a number of years of
non-CE procurement for shopping trolleys.” Dean said the
contract signalled a new-found appreciation of the ‘low lifetime cost’ ownership model endorsed by Wanzl, providing
the best long-term value proposition for the customer. “In the
UK, Wanzl’s national ‘Trolleywise’ trolley retrieval service is
included in the contract agreement to further minimise trolley
losses and deliver a community environmental benefit for
Tesco,” said Dean.
The Tesco shopping trolleys will be supplied in a variety of
wire-based sizes and styles, and are expected to provide a
8-10 year original service life in normal operating conditions.
This represents a significantly higher length of service when
compared with trolleys currently being retired from fleets in
Europe and the UK. Category Buying
Manager for Tesco, Peter Black, said that
their investment in Wanzl shopping trolleys
would contribute to an enhanced experience
of the store for Tesco customers in Europe.
“This is in line with recent far-reaching Tesco
initiatives to bring leisure to shopping.
A quality trolley experience contributes
towards a more enjoyable shopping outing
which encourages return visits, driving footfall and revenue.” Peter said that quality had
been a key driver with all stakeholders
throughout the tender process, with an
overall weighting of 60 % for quality and
40 % for cost emerging as key criteria. “We
are working closely with Wanzl as a strategic
partner to deliver innovation, convenience
and efficiency for customers and staff
colleagues in key development markets for
Tesco. The new trolleys are recognised as
world-class and we are confident that they
will deliver years of reliable service with the
support of Wanzl’s extensive service and
asset management infrastructure in Europe,”
said Peter. In terms of the contract, all trolley
and service requirements within the contract
will be co-ordinated through Wanzl UK and
stored, delivered and maintained through the
Wanzl subsidiary network in each of the
target countries.

– Hygienic removal of goods with

– Convenient handling when filling with
goods from the front or rear
– Super-easy cleaning of the modules,
which can be taken apart with ease
– Compliance with the strictest of
hygiene regulations
Designed according to a modular
construction principle, Wanzl developed the
BakeOff fresh goods presentation system
together with its trade partners and with
one concept in mind: all-in-one. Extremely
versatile and efficient, the BakeOff can be
individually adapted to precise customer
requirements, to the fresh baked goods,
to differing processes and to the space
available in the respective store. The modern
design impresses thanks to its high-quality
appearance with natural wood décor for
the main structure, eye-catching colourcontrasting profiles and modular colours,
coordinated for the range of baked goods.
Whether used in a self-service store, high-end
supermarket or discount store – the BakeOff
system transforms every baked goods section
into an enticing area with a fresh feel.
Pastry tongs or other utensils are used to
retrieve the goods. This means that every
pastry ends up safely where it belongs.
Following removal of a pastry, the remaining
baked goods immediately slide down on the
special coating, to take its place. The shock
and impact-resistant single-plate safety glass
(ESG) offers maximum security during day-today use, with the cushioned access flaps
ensuring a high level of user comfort and quiet operation.
The energy-saving LED lighting provides the perfect backdrop
for the products. A special saliva and sneezing protection
feature and a function for preventing the return of removed
goods provide maximum hygiene protection.
Another attractive feature is the practical handling when
filling with goods: The dispensing modules can be operated
either from the front or rear, depending on the space available
and the processes in place. Cleaning the BakeOff system is
also a ‘piece of cake’: Wanzl has come up with an innovative
cleaning concept to solve what can be a challenging and timeconsuming problem for retail dealers. An extendable central
crumb tray beneath the modules takes care of the groundwork. Now just a little bit of cleaning work is required to
ensure the immaculate, hygienic cleanliness of the BakeOff
presentation unit. An ergonomically arranged drawer system
for disposable gloves and waste box, bags and a vacuum
cleaner all assist in the daily cleaning process. After all, the
sale of unpackaged baked goods as part of a self-service
set-up must meet the strictest of hygiene requirements. As
a complete vendor for the fresh baked goods sales sector,
Wanzl also offers retail dealers trolleys and containers to
assist with in-house logistics for baked goods.

ANDREA ZANINI, Purchasing Manager Inres Coop
“Coop Estense is one of the most successful
retailer cooperatives in the Italian Coop Group.

‘Spend a few lire more, but make sure it’s red!’ – This is
a well-known saying from the Italian province of Modena,
dating to the time before the arrival of the Euro. In this part
of the world, the colour red evokes a passion for breathtaking
speeds, which is unsurprising given that the Ferrari plant that
produces fiery red Formula 1 racing cars and high-horsepower
sports cars is located in the town of Maranello in the region.
The 5,300 Tango plastic shopping trolleys that Wanzl
delivered to Coop Estense in Modena between the end of
2012 and summer 2013 are also in red and feature the
CI branding of Coop Italy. It was the excellent quality of the
trolleys and the wide-range of accessories that convinced the
Italian retailer to opt for this Wanzl solution, and with it to
switch from wire to plastic. The impressive accessories
include a scanner holder, the Promobox coin deposit system
(which also functions as an attractive advertising space),
compartment dividers for sensitive goods and a removable
tray for PET containers. Wanzl supplied
4,000 Tango trolleys each with a 220-litre
basket volume to two Coop hypermarkets
in Modena and a further 1,000 trolleys each
with a 212-litre basket volume to the Coop
hypermarket in Taranto. Two Coop super
markets in Modena were also supplied with
300 Tango models in the slightly smaller
160 litre version. To further improve the
customer experience, the order also included
some of the highquality, long-lasting wire
shopping trolleys from Wanzl that Coop
values so highly: the latest delivery from
Germany to the Coop supermarket group in
Northern Italy was destined for the branch
in Emilia and comprised 150 DR models
each with a volume of 150 litres.

is made up of around 135 retail cooperatives
delivering a total turnover of twelve billion

million partners and 55,000 employees and
its stores number nearly 1,400. The Coop’s
values are based on mutual support, solidarity,

carefully and has a long-term commitment
to maintaining sustainable relations with
the local economy and supporting local

↑ SHOPPING IN RED: At Coop Estense the sporty Tango plastic shopping trolley
from Wanzl is living up to its racy red colour, it is directionally stable and takes
corners perfectly. Outstandingly quiet and smooth-running, shopping with this trolley
is like taking out your favourite car for a quick spin. The shopping basket provides
a high volume of space for goods, the child seat has room for little co-pilots,
a compartment divider is provided to enable fragile items to be kept separate and
the removable PET tray at the back is hugely practical for holding drinks containers.
The plastic basket is lightweight with no metal reinforcements and yet offers a high
bearing capacity and is EAS and RFID compatible.

The Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs launched the China

organises the largest retail trade fair in Asia and the secondlargest retail trade fair in the world. The 15th China Shop was
held in mid-November 2013 in Chengdu. The areas of IT and
commercial, shopping centre, design and smart payment took
centre stage at the approx. 65,000 square metre exhibition,
along with various forums and presentations. The Retail
Leaders Summit also provided visitors and participants with
a platform for communication and networking. The CCFA’s
members include around 1,000 national and international
retailers with 160,000 stores as well as franchisers and
suppliers. As a partner promoting international trade, Wanzl
is committed to the CCFA and is an exhibitor at China Shop.

PОСТ (Rost) in Surgut
Car engines and construction machines
keep running around the clock. No starter
motor can defy the cold in wintry Surgut.
The city is located in the north of the West
Siberian lowlands. The inhabitants of Surgut
drive or fly the 1,200 kilometres to their large
neighbouring city, Omsk. However, the
300,000 or so inhabitants have their reasons
for living in permafrost conditions. Surgut is
founded on the oil industry; jobs are secure,
wages are high and living costs are lower
than in Moscow.
Up until recently people living in Surgut
had few opportunities to spend their money
locally. The new Agora Mall has permanently
changed the shopping landscape of the city
and inside, the Rost chain together with
Wanzl has opened a new chapter of Surgut
supermarket history. Alongside the standard
products that can also be found in the
existing convenience shops, Rost – the name
means growth – also offers a wide range of
fresh and high-priced products. This includes
delicatessens, a wide variety of near-food
items, service counters with an extensive
selection of sausages, meat and cheeses,
an excellent assortment of bread and baked
goods and a comprehensive choice of fruit
and vegetables. A bar selling draft beer and
a café complete the services on offer.
Rost imbues the whole with an exclusive
atmosphere that can easily compete with the large cities in
western Russia. Experts from Wanzl Russia built the supermarket in Surgut on the river Ob – 2,900 kilometres from
Moscow. The design and planning were also undertaken by
Wanzl Russia. It is characterised by wide aisles, pleasant
clarity, organic shapes and the harmonious integration of
essential static construction elements. These posed a serious
challenge for the internal architects: the building is not simply
held up by more columns than usual. The structural design
also requires transverse, longitudinal and additional struts.
In the construction phase this resembled a steel forest, but
using colour and some cladding the Moscow architects toned
down the visual impact and optimally integrated it into the
walkways. Incidentally, the supermarket also reflects the
corporate colours of POCT.
The architects also came up with something unique for the
shelving: as well as the classic wire tech system, the high
rack system was used for impulse purchase islands. Using
glass shelves and wooden edging panels, the planners were
able to create areas on the wire tech uprights for additional
presentations – for example, non-food products matched
to food products.

In 2014, the Turkish retailer Çağdaş

3,500 square metres in the Çayyolu district
of Ankara. The self service programme
plus all shopfitting will be provided under
the system supplier scheme with Wanzl.
Founded in 1987, today Çağdaş operates
69 stores in Ankara and Eskişehir. The new
prestige store in Çayyolu is a flagship store
characterised by fresh produce, quality and
product variety, resulting in an emotive
shopping experience. It comprises a market
hall, farmer’s market, bakery, cake shop,
chemist, a restaurant offering classic
gastronomy as well as a self-service zone –
all flanked by cafés and take-away options.
Çağdaş customers can look forward to the
best of everything in terms of offers, selection,
service, self-service convenience and store
layout – all at low prices. A typical example is the fruit and
vegetables available, freshly picked and in the shopping trolley
the very next day. There are also healthy options: freshly
squeezed juices and smoothies, or ready-to-eat delicious
salads. Delicacies, meat, poultry and premium alcoholic
beverages fulfil every gastronomic desire and inspire a taste
for indulgence
“We have been following the activities of Wanzl for quite
a while now. During our visit to the EuroShop trade fair, we
were impressed time and time again by the extensive and
innovative product range”, says Yahya Kemal Bal, General
Coordinator at Çağdaş. The Eurasia Shop Design exhibition
in Istanbul in March 2013 saw the first intensive contact
between Çağdaş and Wanzl exhibitors. “During the trade fair,
we had a good in-depth consulation. We then decided to pay
a personal visit to the Wanzl Creative Center in Leipheim,
in order to find out more about the range of Wanzl products
and shop solutions”. Helped by the Wanzl team, Çağdaş
became acquainted with the entire world of Wanzl. This
marked the end of a long orientation phase within the market
of international retail providers, as the management team at
Çağdaş then decided that Wanzl was the right partner when
it comes to sophisticated design, the highest possible product
quality and creative solutions.
At the end of 2013 Wanzl delivered 1,000 Tango City plastic
shopping trolleys. The slim and compact trolley with 75-litre
basket volume and attractive design is the current trendsetter for small grocery shopping trips. 500 Tango trolleys with
160-litre baskets are on hand for larger family shopping trips.

SHOP SOLUTIONS The Wanzl brand
British retailers opt for quality
Wanzl UK has taken a further significant step towards
realising its key objective – to be recognised as one of the
leading Retail Shop Solution providers in the UK. Although
well-established as a Food category shop solutions provider
in the UK – with significant contracts built around the core
wire tech system – success in the GM category has been
harder to achieve. This began to change in 2013 as Wanzl
started to re-educate customers and re-position a far wider
Wanzl offer as a Retail Shop Solutions provider. Wanzl UK
Group Manager Director Dean Rolland says that a number
of key steps were taken to “re-focus the business and
change customer perceptions of the Wanzl brand in the UK”.
“This has included the appointment of Ian Williamson as
Sales, Design and Marketing Director and the strengthening
of our Design and Development resources based at Warwick.
Along with new leadership in the Procurement team, this
has resulted in a greatly improved success rate for significant
volume Retail Shop Solutions tenders,” said Dean.
In July 2013, Wanzl was awarded contracts
of over £3m for the manufacture and
installation of 125 specialist display units
for Tesco’s new ‘Hudl’ value tablet and the
development and manufacture of 47,000
shelving overlays for the ‘Tesco’s Finest’
re-launch. Tesco have since confirmed that
Wanzl has been awarded the majority share
of new GM programmes for 2014/15. This is
a significant step forward for Wanzl both in
the UK and globally as Tesco is the third
largest retailer in the UK and one of the
largest three retailers in the world.
Drinks shops are a central European inven
tion. Unlike in Anglo-Saxon off licences, the
focus is on products whose price includes
a deposit for their bottles: beer, soft drinks,
water and even wine in some regions. These
shops are usually small warehouses with
a checkout area. This format is in keen
competition with the grocery trade and
consequently under economic pressure.
To counter this problem, specialist drinks
shops have found their niche in Belgium and
the Netherlands, and now in Germany too.

New shop design for Gefako
The ‘speciality store’ character of Gefako
specialist drinks shops is being given an
extra boost. This is being showcased by the
first shop to be fitted out in the new shop
design, carried out by the cooperation from
south-west Germany together with shop
fitting experts from Wanzl in Appenweier.
The new interior design appeals to the
emotions, is clearer, and emphasises the
shop’s specialist competence. This means that
a customer’s first and often crucial glance at
the new shop takes in a clean, pleasant and
uncluttered impression. The brand element,
Gefako’s typical circles representing stylised
fizzy drink bubbles, clearly leads customers
though the shop to the individual product
groups and the service points. The highquality design of the wine area uses individual
presentation stands to highlight outstanding
vintages. This triggers buying impulses and
accentuates Gefako’s competence as a specialist drinks shop
in a credible and visible way. Gefako also displays spirits
clearly and separately using the Wanzl wire tech 100 shelving
system with its high-quality transparent wire shelves.
There is a space set aside for luxury beers and shelving for
gift hampers. The empties can easily be hidden behind Gefako
advertising boards; a simple, quick and effective solution which
significantly improves the overall atmosphere of the shop.
“A few crates of lemonade, coke, water and some national
beers – that makes for a shop with low margins”, as shop
fitting consultant Tino Pilharcz can confirm from his own
experience. The Wanzl employee therefore advises specialist
drinks shops to credibly emphasise their competence and to
distance themselves from the warehouse environment. “In
this sector the first impression is crucial.” Wanzl undertook on
the entire project for the design, planning and implementation
of the new shopfitting design for the Gefako drinks shops;
Wanzl shopping trolleys and logistics containers help towards
efficient delivery and strong sales.

Fresh and fit – Biedronka optimises its image
In 2012, Biedronka, the largest retail chain
in Poland, gave itself a complete makeover.
The redevelopment of over 2,000 outlets
lasted a mere nine months; the strict schedule
demanded the timely and synchronised
planning of all Biedronka employees and of
all the companies taking part in this initiative,
including Wanzl. Each Biedronka supermarket
had 48 hours to clear the entire shop floor,
install the new store fittings and window
displays and put the goods back on the
shelves. Over the course of the nine months,
45 stores a week were modernised, each in
accordance with a precise schedule: shops
were closed on Saturday at 6pm and the
redeveloped stores opened for business
on the following Tuesday at 7am. Since then,
the new shops have demonstrated wellstructured sales areas, clearly-arranged
goods and a pleasant shopping atmosphere.
Even greater emphasis is now placed on
fresh produce, such as dairy products, fruit
and vegetables and baked goods. “We have
ARKADIUSZ SMAGA, Sales Director at Wanzl Poland
carried out large-scale consumer surveys and responded to the
needs of our customers”, reports Alfred Kubczak, Corporate
Affairs Director at JM Polska. Customer satisfaction increased
significantly following the supermarket renovation;
furthermore, new target groups discovered Biedronka as
their first choice for high-quality food shopping, such as
professionals looking for fresh produce, but who have limited
shopping time.
Two excellent examples of the positive customer response
to the changes at Biedronka are fitness trainers, Monika
Tokaj and Agnieszka Sawicka. Both women appreciate
the new ‘look’ and the freshness of the products: “After an
intense early-morning workout, Biedronka supplies all the
ingredients I need for a healthy breakfast – fresh fruit,
nutritious raw produce and crispy, oven-baked bread”, says
Agnieszka Sawicka. Like her friend from Grodzisk Mazowiecki,
the trainer from Warsaw works for various fitness studios.
This schedule offers little time for food shopping, but fresh
produce and healthy eating are still of the utmost importance.
The solution to this is Biedronka – top-quality products and
plenty of fresh and well-organised goods, assisted by flexible
and high-quality shelving systems.
With 40,000 employees, Biedronka is one
of the most highly valued brands in Poland
today and has won a number of awards.
In 1995, Biedronka opened its first super
market in Poland, and in 1998 the Portu
guese retail group Jerónimo Martins (JM)
acquired the Polish retail chain. Since then,
JM have invested approximately 8 billion
złoty (around 1.9 billion euros) in the development and expansion of Biedronka. Today,
over a billion customers per year shop at
Poland’s largest retailer, with more than
2,100 brands at around 800 locations. At
Biedronka, customers know what to expect:
high-quality, fresh food at reasonable prices
as well as an exclusive non-food range;
Biedronka focusses on regional production
and cooperates with around 500 Polish
manufacturers and suppliers. The end of 2012
saw JM Polska receive an award at the
‘Eurobuild Awards’ in the category ‘New
Retail Concept of the Year’ with regard to
the Polish market, in recognition of the
redevelopment of Biedronka’s image.

Multi-order picking ensures a sparkling performance
The forklift truck reaches for the sky,
carrying an order picker and Wanzl’s KT 4
order picking trolley to a height of almost
three metres, in the new central warehouse
of Riedel Glass Works in Schneegattern,
Austria. The trolley is held in place on the
forks of the truck with forklift loops. Once at
the top, the co-worker picks the goods for
the order and places them into the Wanzl
trolley. He is then lowered back to the
ground and moves on to the next order
picking level, where the maximum pallet
height is 1.30 metres. Here the order picker
and the trolley stay on the ground – the order
picker simply reaches over and picks the
goods in next to no time. Wanzl supplied
60 nimble, smooth-running KT 4 order picking
trolleys with a special design to Riedel Glass
Works in the spring of 2012. Ever since then
the trolleys have been used in a two-shift
system for small-scale order picking and Web
shop orders. “We are delighted. The trolleys
move very smoothly to protect our fragile goods and we
have not needed any major repairs for almost two years,”
explains Christoph Lehner, Area Manager at the Schnee
gattern plant of Riedel Glass Works.
A single trolley can hold up to 16 orders on its four strong
wooden shelves in line with the multi-order picking system.
“We’re referring to MOP trolleys, short for Multi-Order
Picking,” says Christoph Lehner. Each shelf features an
anti-slip guard and flexible, movable stainless steel dividers,
which can be easily adjusted by hand to each order volume
on the order picking list. The IT-based warehouse
management system guides the order picker and his trolley
along the optimum route through the new central warehouse, which covers some 10,000 square metres and
boasts 10,000 pallet slots and around 2,500 items.
“The trolley’s capacity together with the optimised routes
have massively speeded up the order picking process.” Each
day, Riedel Glass Works sends around 400 packages across
Europe from the small-scale order picking area and for the
Web shop. Orders received by midday are dispatched on
the same day.
A true passion for glassware
Riedel is a pioneer in glassware. Founded
more than 250 years ago in Bohemia, the
Riedel name continues to be synonymous with
exquisite glassmaking craftsmanship. The
current head, Maximilian Riedel, represents the
11th generation of the Riedel family to lead the
company. Riedel discovered the interplay between the shape of the bowl and the taste and
aroma of the wine – as the world’s first glass
designer, in the 1970s Claus J. Riedel prioritised
the shape of a wine glass over its aesthetics in
line with the principle of ‘form follows function’,
and showcased the hand-blown, hand-crafted
‘Sommeliers’ range as the world’s very first
gourmet glass range. Nowadays this range
forms the basis for each and every grape
variety-specific wine glass and has been added
to the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
In 2004 Riedel Glass Works acquired
100 % ownership of the German glassware
company Nachtmann and its subsidiary
Spiegelau. Ever since then, the Riedel, Nacht
mann and Spiegelau brands have been operating under the umbrella name Riedel Glass
Works – one of Europe’s largest high-quality
glass manufacturers. The company’s headquarters are located in Kufstein in Austria
and it operates branches in the United King
dom, the USA, Canada, Australia and Japan.

Internationale Weinlogistik GmbH (IWL) is part of HAWESKO
Holding AG, the Hanseatisches Wein & Sekt Kontor, Germany’s
leading provider of high-quality wines and champagnes.
IWL has a fully automated high-level store with 23,000 pallet
spaces, a conventional narrow-aisle store with 7,000 pallet
spaces and two order picking halls with 4,000 pallet spaces
and 5,000 shelf spaces. A total of around 9,000 different
items (wines, gifts, champagnes, food and non-food products)
are stored at the Tornesch site at a controlled temperature
with an optimised humidity level. The annual turnover is
25 million bottles and 600,000 gift packs, which are delivered
to over 300,000 private end customers and 12,000 wholesalers. While the logistics centre on Großer Moorweg mainly
supplies cases to end customers (B2C), the resellers (B2B)
receive deliveries from the Hamburger Straße site, usually
on pallets.

↓ IN THE HUMIDOR: high-level store with 23,000 pallet
spaces and adjacent order picking zone
Order picking with an electric motor
In the humidor, the temperature is 18º Celsius and the
humidity level is a constant 65% around the clock.
Countless sensors continually measure and monitor the
precise values, because temperature and humidity are
decisive quality factors in the humidor at IWL Internationale
Wein Logistik GmbH on Großer Moorweg in Tornesch, near
Hamburg. Here, thousands of quality wines, champagnes,
gifts and other food and non-food products are kept in the
high-level store that comprises 23,000 pallet spaces. “From
this B2C warehouse, we supply to private end customers.
The average order quantity is two cases or 24 bottles and
the quantity we ship is around two million parcels each year”,
says Frank Göbels, Managing Director of IWL. Since February
2012, 45 Wanzl KT4 ‘drive’ order picking trolleys with a fifth
wheel with an integrated electric motor for manual order
picking on a small-scale have been rolling through the
humidor; a second delivery of five more trolleys was made
in summer 2013.
↑ CUSTOMISED SOLUTION: Wanzl modified the KT4 ‘drive’
order picking trolley specially to meet IWL’s requirements. On
each of the three ergonomic sloping wire shelves, there is
space for three wine crates to sit securely. One trolley can
hold a maximum of nine crates on each side, making a total of
up to 18 units. The new Wanzl trolleys increase the efficiency
of order picking by a two-figure percentage.
In a two-year pilot and planning phase, Wanzl worked with
the customer from Tornesch to develop a special version
of the KT4 ‘drive’ order picking trolley with sloping wire
shelves. Frank Göbels: “We gave the order picking staff a
key role in the development process: up to 25 order pickers
tested Wanzl’s prototypes for several weeks, then we began
the optimisation phase.” When the first 45 new Wanzl KT4
‘drive’ order picking trolleys with electric motors replaced the
manually operated trolleys we were using previously two
years ago, “it was like switching from a
bicycle to a car”, says Zekeriya Karakol,
Production Manager at the IWL logistics
centre on Großer Moorweg. In the hub of
the fifth wheel, attached underneath the
centre of the trolley, is an integrated lowmaintenance and low-wear electric motor for
moving the trolley, ensuring track precision
and effortless and safe manoeuvring. The
maximum speed is up to 6 km/h depending
on load. The electric motor can be operated
at several speeds using two rocker switches
on the handle for left and right-handed people.
At IWL, the trolleys are usually pulled.
“This means that the staff always have a
clear view ahead of them, which reduces the
risk of accidents”, says Frank Göbels. An
efficient lithium polymer battery supplies the
motor with power. “At our site, the trolleys
are in constant use for 10 hours, the maximum
length of a shift.” Then there is a convenient
battery change and a quick recharge.

AIRPORT + SECURITY SOLUTIONS Welcome Heathrow!
Wanzl delivers 12,000 luggage trolleys
With around 70 million passengers a year, London
Heathrow Airport is the biggest airport in Europe. London
Heathrow is third in the world behind Atlanta and Peking
airports when it comes to passenger traffic. Over 80 airlines
take off and land at London Heathrow and fly to 184 destinations in 80 countries from five different terminals. The most
popular global travel destinations of the international hub are
New York, Dubai, Dublin, Frankfurt and Amsterdam.
From 2014, Wanzl is supplying around 12,000 luggage
trolleys in a sturdy steel version of the Combi C 400 model,
individually modified to the exact customer requirements
for use in Heathrow Terminals 1 to 4 to conveniently trans
port luggage. The Wanzl models are gradually replacing the
existing trolley fleet. The order is accompanied by a five-year
maintenance contract, undertaken by Wanzl UK. The trolleys
will be checked in clearly defined cycles to ensure they are in
pristine condition and if necessary, retrofitted with Wanzl
genuine spare parts. The order is a result of an international
call for tenders, in which Wanzl pitted itself against global
competition and successfully won the bid. During two
extended sampling phases and a joint intensive workshop
at the airport, the agile, directionally stable and easy-tomanoeuvre model from Wanzl, which also works perfectly for
trolley transportation in convoy for controlled supply, was
impressive. The judges at Heathrow gave top marks for the
quality of the material and workmanship, the production
logistics, supply capacity and service and for the Wanzl
five-year maintenance contract. Viewed
equally positively were the annually increasing
references in Great Britain and Ireland,
including Manchester, Birmingham, Dublin,
Newcastle or Cardiff. “On our side, Jon Hibbins
was largely responsible for the tender phase
and received the full support of the German
and British Wanzl team”, explains Dean
Rolland, managing director of the Wanzl UK
Group. “The intensive cooperation with
London Heathrow Airport has now finally
been successful, after many vain attempts
over the last ten years and the presentation
of a wide variety of luggage trolley models.
For Wanzl, this airport is an ideal candidate,
and the bid is a significant milestone for us
as a systems supplier and a world leader for
luggage trolleys.”

Hamad International Airport:
50 million passengers a year by 2020
Wanzl, the airport systems supplier, has
a new reference customer in its portfolio:
Hamad International Airport in Doha (Qatar)
has ordered 3,800 Voyager aluminium
luggage trolleys for baggage claim and for
convenient luggage transport within the
terminals. 13 Airport Scooters of the latest
generation provide efficient trolley management: They ensure that the Voyager trolleys
are transported back to the distribution
stations in an organised and time-saving
fashion, coordinated exactly with the flight
schedule and passenger frequency. Wanzl
received an additional order for the securitycontrolled duty-free areas: 3,200 Airport
Shoppers with ample room for products and
hand luggage, contributing to creating a
pleasant shopping experience. The trolleys
were delivered in several batches, on time,
predominantly between the fourth quarter of
2013 and the start of 2014 in Doha.
The new Hamad International Airport (HIA) is situated just
a few kilometres away from the previous Doha International
Airport, which is reaching its full capacity. When it opens
in 2014, HIA will become a central transport hub in the
Near East and one of the fastest growing airports worldwide,
with world-class passenger facilities: Thereafter 24 million
passengers are expected to take off and land at the airport
every year, whilst for the end of the next stage of expansion
in 2020, the target is 50 million air passengers per year. With
the double-figure growth rate at Qatar Airways, and therefore also at HIA, the airport will become one of the largest
airports in the world in just a few years. Recently Doha has
been handling over 20 million passengers per year and with a
connection rate approaching 80%, this destination is developing
into an international hub airport. The FIFA plans are also
promising: in 2022 the football World Cup is set to take
place in the Emirate of Qatar, with fans flying in from all
over the world.

Seoul-Incheon and Kuala Lumpur as new
customers in 2013. Many long-standing
partners, such as Dubai, Shanghai, Mumbai,
Abu Dhabi and Manchester airports placed

Come for the design. Stay for the experience.
Around 120 years ago, the West Hamburg gasworks
were generating light to illuminate streets and homes.
This industrial monument has now been carefully restored
to create an imposing building that combines modern
design with historical architecture to create a fascinatingly
harmonious space used as Hamburg’s first design hotel.
The building’s light-flooded brick hall, measuring 600 sq. m,
is typical of the unique loft ambience of the hotel, which,
since opening in 2000, has become the city’s premier place
to stay.
Charismatic design and a stylish ambience impart the
interior of the Gastwerk Hotel with its unmistakable

Room service by Wanzl
To enable perfect room service, in May
2013 Wanzl delivered 11 ‘Premium-ZPClassic’ manoeuvrable chambermaid trolleys,
each with four levels including two attacha
ble in a variety of positions. The chambermaid trolleys, which are each equipped with
a fifth castor and can be turned on the spot,
are used to transport fresh linen and guest
supplies directly into the rooms and suites.
The 120-litre polyester bag is used to ‘invisibly’
sort materials and waste in an environmentally friendly manner.
A further impressive feature is the
‘Connect holder’ that enables handcarts to
be easily coupled for transporting dirty
laundry: In just one step the handcart can
be coupled and uncoupled and the laundry
rolls into the collection point. The handcart
can also be folded away to save space.
Design, functionality, sustainability,
comprehensive accessories, service and longterm availability of replacement parts – these
were all factors that impressed the Gastwerk
Hotel and convinced them to opt for Wanzl’s
offering. In addition, the slimline, compact
chambermaid trolley from Wanzl fits easily
into the staff lift, taking up very little space.
Wanzl also supplied three ‘Premium-ZP-Fresh’
chambermaid trolleys to the hotel for the
exclusive evening housekeeping check and
the turn-down service.
industrial, functional building and the elegance
of the Gastwerk Hotel’s contemporary

with cool and functional metal and concrete.
The airy spaciousness provides the lightflooded rooms with the lightness and warmth
that makes them a comfortable home from

“The trolleys are easy to handle, they have a large
capacity and they can be used to transport clean
linen for 14 rooms without problems. Steering
and manoeuvring is easy even for our more dainty
