The atmosphere is decidedly continental but without any problems of language or currency, Jersey nevertheless has a familiar feel. The variety of places to visit and sights to enjoy is quite remarkable given the compact size of the island. Spectacular cliffs, wide, sandy beaches and leafy country lanes – the scenery seems to change around each bend in the road. Jersey is also an island with a proud tradition and heritage. In the early days the floats were mostly horse-drawn and covered in floral decorations. The tradition was to tear a flower off the float and throw it to a lady in the crowd. Flowers were sometimes thrown back and hence Battle was born. The Battle is enhanced by the many Bands, both locally and from overseas who join in the Parade. The day is over all too soon so sit back and enjoy and tomorrow night you can watch the Spectacular Moonlight Parade. Liberation Week – 6 May 2012 Liberation Day is a special celebration for Islanders, considered as our very own ‘National Day’. It commences with a Concert band performing in Liberation Square as parades, led by marching bands and vintage military vehicles converge in the square. The morning’s ceremony is a very moving and poignant reflection on the Occupation of the Island and its liberation by British Troops on May 9th 1945 and is hosted by the Island’s dignitaries together with those islanders who lived through the Occupation. It concludes with community singing and a reenactment of the actual Liberation. Air Display – 9 September 2012 The Display itself takes place away from the confines of the airport in St. Aubin’s Bay on the south coast of the Island. Over the past few years the Air Display has really made a name for itself within the Airshow Calendar with a wide variety of aircraft on show from many different countries. Aircraft from Belgium, Ireland, France, Netherlands, Russia, United Kingdom and the United States have all featured in some way. Organised by Jersey International Air Display A.R.L. on behalf of the Royal Air Force Association (Jersey) Branch as part of Battle of Britain Week. Spring walking weeks have been organised by Jersey Tourism for the last 10 years, with all walks featured in the programme being free of charge. The Walking Week offers almost 40 walks to choose from with over 1000 participants usually take part in the Spring Walking Weeks. Walkers can experience a different side to the island on foot, following cliff paths and woodland trails and on some routes private access has been granted offering spectacular vistas that you wouldn’t ordinarily see in a vehicle. Tennerfest Food Festival – 22 October 2012 For the 14th consecutive year, starting from the 1st October, the Channel Islands can look forward to 6 weeks of great meals at fixed prices. Across Guernsey and Jersey in 2010, the Tennerfest had over 170 restaurants taking part, meaning diners were once again guaranteed to find outstanding menus and meals created from the wealth of good food available in the islands. The Tennerfest is a food promotion that encourages local restaurants to create a special, all-inclusive menu that provides the diner with more at a fixed amount. Restaurateurs on both islands are offering menus starting at £10 with £12.50, £15.00 and now £17.50 options. This enables the restaurants to offer a wide and exciting selection of food during this promotion. Battle of Flowers – 5 August 2012 In 1902 to celebrate the Coronation of Kind Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, Jersey decided to hold a parade. The event was so successful that it was decided to IMPORTANT Please note that whilst a passport is not required, photographic identification will be required at the airport. 44 ACCOMMODATION Mayfair Hotel A warm welcome awaits you at The Mayfair Hotel, only a few minutes’ walk from the bustling shops of St Helier, five minutes from the famous Howard Davis Park and a ten minute stroll from the beach at Havre des Pas.
