CORBELS AND BRACKETS
CORBELS AND BRACKETS Corbels and Brackets your hardwood, we strongly suggest you consider your specific project: Our wood corbels and brackets are handcrafted from red and white oak, cherry, hard maple, alder, beech and white hardwood. Browsing through the pages of our catalog you'll discover a wide variety of hardwood corbels designs. There are many options to choose from, whether something ornate is desired, or something simple and classic. If you intend to paint your corbels one solid color; the best wood types for your project is Alder, Maple, or White hardwood. A nice, tight grain is a characteristic of these wood types, and since the opaque quality of the paint will cover the grain in the end, these wood varieties are the most cost effective for your project. Choosing the Style If you intend to stain your corbels and wish to match an existing stain, Maple and Alder is the wisest choice. These varieties are lighter in color and possess a minimal grain. Apply the stain in layers until you achieve the depth of stain you desire. Maple and Alder are the most forgiving of the varieties and are considered to be the most userfriendly. When choosing a style, it is good to look around the area the corbels or brackets are installed. Does the space have a modern style or a classic style? Is the style more traditional or does it lean towards the Arts and Crafts style? If you wish to stain White Hardwood, be aware that this hardwood is less dense than the wood varieties. This quality allows the wood to absorb stain the most extensively, so the utmost care must be taken with the application. Vigilance is required when applying the stain, since any overlapping of layers will show clearly. With White Hardwood, you must work quickly and carefully. At www.InvitingHome.com, we offer corbels and wood brackets with clean and simple lines to corbels with elaborate curves and scrolls to corbels with whimsical, eclectic details. No matter what your style is, or what your design goal may be, there is a style of corbel that is perfect for your decor. Choosing the Correct Wood Our wood corbels and brackets can be used in a wide variety of applications. All carved corbels and brackets are triple-sanded ready to be stained or painted. Before you choose If you wish to match existing Cherry cabinet components finished in a clear varnish, select a Cherry corbel and finish it in clear varnish as well. The same rule can be www.InvitingHome.com CORBELS AND BRACKETS applied for matching Oak finished in a clear varnish. Choosing the Correct Size It is important to find the correct size when supporting a counter or a shelf. When supporting a countertop, the corbel’s depth must be no less than 1/2 the depth of the overhang. When supporting a shelf or mantel, the corbel or bracket should have a depth of about 70% of the depth of the counter to ensure proper support. When incorporating corbels into your home for purely decorative reasons, choosing the correct sized corbel is based upon the proportions of the surface you're working with, as well as the physical details of the corbel itself. If you intend to place the corbel above the fluting of a pilaster, the key dimension you are working with is the width of the corbel. The corbel should measure as wide, though no wider than 1/2 inch of the pilaster. If you intend to place the corbel underneath a structural beam, the key dimension you are focused on is the width of the corbel. The corbel's width should measure as wide as the width of the beam, or no smaller than 1/4 inch of the width of the beam. focused on is the depth of the corbel. The same rule applies when using the corbel as means of support: the corbel should measure at least 1/2 of the depth of the countertop's overhang; or more preferably, exactly 3/4 of the depth of the overhang. If you intend to place the corbels inside a door opening or entryway, the key dimensions you are working with is width. The corbels' widths should measure the same as the width of the doorway. They should never measure smaller than 2 inches of the doorway's width, with 1 inch on either side. Also, special consideration should be given to the sides of the corbel, since the carved details will face outwards. The carved details will be the first glimpse of the corbels one sees when passing through the doorway. If you intend to place the corbels on either side of a kitchen's stove hood, you are working with both dimensions of width and depth. The corbel should be rather large; at least 12 inches deep. If cabinets will be butting against the corbel, the sides of the corbel should be flat, so it will be flush with the cabinets. If you intend to place the corbel beneath a countertop, the key dimension you are www.InvitingHome.com CORBELS Los-Angeles Corbel R54 - in 2 sizes; - in beech, maple, alder, oak, cherry; small 10-1/2"H x 6-1/2"D x 3-3/8"W large 13-1/4"H x 8-1/4"D x 3-7/8"W Chicago Bracket R57 - in 4 sizes; At InvitingHome.com, our corbels are all made from select hardwoods, which are durable but also pliable enough for woodworking. Our Wood Selection Guide takes a look at seven hardwood species: alder, beech, cherry, hard maple, oak (red and white), poplar and white hardwood. Which is the right wood species for your corbels? It's not always an easy choice. But our Wood Selection Guide can help you pick the best wood for your home improvement project, with a particular eye toward corbels. Whether you're a homeowner, designer or builder, we hope you find this guide to be a valuable resource. Alder Alder, a hardwood grown in the Pacific Northwest, is a common choice for corbels as well as cabinetry and furniture. This wood is prized for its consistency in color and ability to take stain well — two factors to keep in mind if you're considering alder wood corbels. A beautiful wood that is growing in popularity, alder is relatively soft compared with other hardwoods and thus easy to work with. It features graining and rich tones that are similar to cherry, but at a much lower price tag. Beech Beech is a creamcolored hardwood that grows primarily in North America and in parts of Europe. Perhaps best known as the wood used in baseball bats, beech is also found in wood corbels and hardwood floors. Three factors that make beech a popular choice for corbels: It takes stain well, is easy to work with and has an excellent finish. Cherry A perennial favorite among homeowners, cherry has been used by furniture-makers for literally thousands of years. This beautiful hardwood brings a classy touch to wood brackets, flooring, cabinetry, butcher block countertops and other home furnishings. Strong and relatively hard, cherry is known for its durability. But its beauty is the primary reason it's so often chosen for corbels. Initially light brown in tone, cherry gradually darkens over time to display warm, reddish-brown hues. And if you're looking to add a special touch to your cherry corbels, this wood looks spectacular when finished with a clear polyurethane varnish. Hard Maple Whatever your family can dish out, hard maple can take it. This wood is used in flooring and even cutting boards, so you know it's more than tough enough for corbels. Its hardness and stiffness make hard maple more difficult to carve, but these www.InvitingHome.com WOOD CARVINGS features also enable crisper detail and more intricate carving motifs. Hard maple generally has interesting graining that adds life to corbels. A relatively clear wood that ranges from light brown to creamy tan in color, it takes nicely to natural or light finishes. Honey brown stain tends to complement hard maple corbels particularly well. Oak (Red and White) reasonably priced option when choosing a wood for your corbels. White Hardwood White hardwood, or basswood, is used for wood corbels, molding, furniture and even Venetian blinds and shutters. In terms of appearance, this wood is fairly plain: very light cream in color with little to no grain. Oak, the most abundant hardwood species in the United States, has been a favorite of craftsmen for hundreds of years. Very hard and durable, oak is a popular choice for corbels, cabinets, floors and many types of furniture. The species comes in two basic varieties: red and white. What makes white hardwood stand out — particularly for crafting corbels — is that it's so easy to work with. The softness and straight grain of white hardwood make it the ideal carving wood. It also takes well to paint or a polyurethane finish. Both red and white oak stain beautifully in most any color and sport distinctive grain patterns ranging from straight lines to wide arcs. Red oak, the more common of the varieties, has a pinkish tint and open grain pores. White oak has a slightly greenish hue and smaller pores. InvitingHome.com offers a wide variety of corbels, most of which are available in three or more wood species. The type of wood is just one thing to consider when looking at corbels; you'll also want to factor in style and application. Click here to start reviewing our selection of wood corbels. Summary Poplar Poplar trees can reach heights of 150 feet, making them the tallest of all U.S. hardwood species. Prized for its durability, the wood is used in corbels as well as kitchen cabinets, molding and doors. You'll also find poplar in many musical instruments. Poplar is pale yellow to white in color with a greenish tint in the sapwood and open grain pores. It stains well across a range of colors (including a honey tone with darker colors) and holds paint quite nicely too. A www.InvitingHome.com
