Monmouth College visits the Harry Potter Club By Mitchell Brent The Harry Potter club had visitors from the Modern Mythology class from Monmouth College Friday December, 5th. Mrs. Rankin said they had a great time doing all sorts of activities. They brewed potions in blenders; they also did a search and rescue. And they did transfiguration experiment’s where they all made things out of clay without direction’s. They all had a great time doing everything and they had lots of laughs. At one point they thought they were being to loud and disrupting classes. That’s how much fun the were having according to Mrs. Rankin. Overall it was a great time for all students and they soon would like to do it again. If you think you would enjoy Harry Potter club then you can sign up next semester. Page 2 7th and 8th grade boy’s basketball By Mitchell Brent The 7th and 8th boys basketball games on Wednesday night were awesome, 7th grade team won but the 8th grade boys went into double overtime and lost. But they almost pulled out a win in that last 3 minutes of the last overtime. West Prairie hit a shot at the buzzer to eliminate the Heat’s lead and take the game into overtime. The 8th grade boys were down with 4 seconds left when Dawson Link hit a three to put us in double overtime at the buzzer. In the last overtime the heat turned the ball over and committed a foul in the final seconds. West Prairie’s player hit his free throws and gave the Cyclones the two point victory. The lead scorer from our team that game was Dawson Link with twelve points. The other teams lead scorer was W. Rhodes with nine points. At the end of the game the score was 37-35. Now in the seventh grade game it was a massacre. At the end of the game the score was 35-9. And the lead scorer of that game was Eric Rathbone. The other teams lead scorer was R. Williams with only 3 points. We will be following up on later WC HEAT games but for now wish your team good luck!!!!!!!! Girls Regional Boys7th and 8th vs Cuba The seventh and eighth grade boy’s basketball game was a great game for both teams. The eighth grade game was a win. We beat Cuba….. Well actually we destroyed them in the seventh grade game. But the eighth grade game was still a good game. The score at the end of the eighth grade game was 48 - 40. The lead scorer of that game on our team was Dawson Link with 14 points and for the other team was R. Valley. The seventh grade game was good too. Our lead scorer of that game was Landen Beelman with 15 points and for the other team is Vanvickle. We will be following up on our coming games. But for now wish your team good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By Nikki Bole The 7th grade girls had their regional the first game the girls won. The score was 16-36. The second game we lost the score was 8-38. The girls played Hamilton the first game and we played hard like it was the last time we were ever going to play basketball. We were making silly fouls ever minute. Everyone had 2-3 fouls. The Hamilton team played good but sometimes they couldn’t keep up. We were stealing the ball left and right. The West Central Heat kept taking the ball to the hoop. That game was a great game. The second game was against Mendon Unity and West Central lost. We were so upset because we had lost the game and were done for the season. There was no turning back, by 2 quarter we knew that we were over. They win they got the W. we were not on the same page we all were tired and didn’t want to be there. We needed Jayde H. because she is the girl that we depend on. She always was there when we needed help and she was not there for this game. The girls did well at their regional Sand Valley Tournament By Mitchell Brent th th The 7 and the 8 grade boy’s basketball was a hard fight for the 8th grade but not the 7th grade. The 8th grade boys played against a better team then 7th grade. It was a great battle from the 8th grade boy’s team. Asa Stanley and Luke Ditsworth were the lead scorers with both 4 points each. The 7th grade game was a breeze for WC. But also it was a good effort from Laharpe. We could have of played a lot better game than that. But a win is a win, well take it. The lead scorer of that game was Landen Beelman with 11 points. We will be following up on the next games, but for now wish your team good luck. Game 2 The game on Tuesday night against Bushnell was a hard fought game from both teams all the way. The 7th grade boys had a tough run all the way through. It was the craziest 7th grade game of all season by far. The last quarter of the game was so nerve racking. Eric Rathbone had the key block of the game. Nathan bigger was the lead scorer of that game with 12 points. We will be following up in the next upcoming games but for now wish your W.C. good luck. Championship Thursday nights was a game you didn’t want to see. It was a massacre!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The lead scorer of that game was Jack Krieger with 8 points. The other teams lead scorer was Kreps with 12 points. The final score of the game was 58-12 A-town But for now wish your team good luck. VOLUME 1 ISSUE 7 Page 4 The “Selfie” The Modern Way To Share Your Look By David Gaylord Millions of “selfies” are taken a day, but why? The first “selfie” was taken by Robert Cornelius in 1839. Back then it would have taken you being still for 3 to 15 minutes. Also, the word “selfie” was first coined by a drunk Australian. Research shows that one of the main reasons why we take “selfies” is to document yourself or to tell people that you got a new hat or shirt. If you are one of those people who get things all the time it gets boring. Another reason is that you want people to look at you. If you want people to look at you, just go in a big crowd and say look at me! Research also says that the average person takes 2 “selfies” a day. So doing the math in a 50 year life span you would have taken 36,400 “selfies” in your life. 48% of “selfies” are posted on Facebook, Whatsapp and text 27%, Twitter 9%, Instagram 8%, Snapchat 5%, and Pinterest 2%. According to Samsung 30% of pictures people take between the ages 18-24 are “selfies”. People on Facebook are trying to make “National Selfie Day” on November sixteenth. What’s your “opinion”? “ More the merrier.”- Mitchell Brent The Hashtag By Mitchell Brent and David Gaylord The first reason why we use hashtags is to categorize Tweets by keyword. People use the symbol # before a relevant keyword or phrase (no spaces) in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets and help them show more easily in Twitter Search. Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets marked with that keyword. Unlike when you search for a specific person in twitter you search @idontcareaboutfacebook. Also these days people use it in a sentences such as, this is so stupid #stupid. Here are some fantastic quotes: “#pokemongottacatchthemall!-David Gaylord“#UmUmUmUmUm-Mitchell Brent 2014 #doyoulikepeppersprayonyourburritoilikeitspicybutnotuhhspicy!-At&t Charlie Pokémon Facts!!!!! Page 5 Hat Review: A look at hats By: Eric R. Hello and welcome to the 2nd installment of Hat Review. In this Issue, we will talk about the infamous fruit hat. Lets see how Hatty this hat is. The fruit hat first started as an idea in 1895 but didn’t start to become a trend until1918. In 1941 at a New York Fifth Avenue hat-making show, the amount of fruits hats, oddly, overshadowed the amount of hats with flowers in them. They were hugely popularized by the 1943 movie “The Gang’s All Here” when actor Carmen Miranda wore it in a singing scene. Another way this hat was popularized was by the Chiquita Banana mascot wore a fruit hat in there logos, being inspired by Carmen. The look of the hat is….interesting because it is a whole bunch of combinations of fruits like bananas, apples, oranges, and so much more. This hat gets a 7.5/10 on the Hattyness scale and a 10/10 on the nutrition scale. Hat Review: A look at hats By: Eric R. Welcome to the 3rd installment of Hat Review. Today, we will be judging on how Hatty the hat called the umbrella hat is. The umbrella hat was first patented in 1880 by the man Robert W. Patten during a time when he was in Mexico and prospecting. Once he returned to Seattle, he was named “The Umbrella Man” by his neighbors and became an umbrella repair man. He became an inspiration for John Hager to make up a comic about him and his umbrella hat. For the look, it’s an umbrella. It’s literally an umbrella. Like really. You all know what an umbrella look likes, right? (You can just look at it down there so :P) It’s mainly seen as a novelty item rather then a rain protecting device. This hat gets a 7.59/10 on the Hattyness scale and a 10/10 on the Ridiculous scale. Even More Facts Here are some more amazing Pokémon facts. The Pokédex entries for Drifloon state that the Pokémon tricks children into thinking it’s a balloon and carries them away.- Raikou is the only legendary Pokémon Ash hasn't encountered in the anime or in one of the movies.- Latias and Latios were the first legendary Pokémon to have set genders, or even genders at all. All 4 professors are named after trees. Oak, Elm, Birch, & Rowan. If you deposit 999 Pokémon in Pokémon Ranch, you can trade an egg for a Mew. Fighting is the only type that has never been paired with Flying. That the first purely metal type Pokémon in the pokedex is Mawile. Congrats you made it to the end. Page 6 WHEN ... The whole newspaper class was waiting for this to happen, and we are so excited! We asked him a series of questions to get to know him better and this is how he replied. The first question was, “Why did you want to become a teacher?” His response was, “After going to the elementary school in high school for a class to help younger students I decided that teaching may be something that I enjoyed.”. We also asked him why he wanted to be a basketball coach and he said: “I never intended to coach. When I first started at West Central there were openings for 6th and 7th grade basketball. Mr. Nichols knew I had a basketball background and really wanted me to try it. I chose 6th grade because I wanted less pressure. I decided that I enjoyed it and would like to move up to 7th/8th grade level.” We also found out what he likes to do when he’s not teaching or coaching. Mr. Harris enjoys playing his Xbox, reading comics and playing disc golf. The third question for Mr. Harris, was what do you like about teaching and he said “If you would have told me when I was a kid I would have a job in athletics I would have said yes immediately.” He also likes being a teacher because he gets to have summers off to travel and spend time with his family. Well I hope you enjoyed reading the teacher of the month article and learning more about Mr. Harris. Next time you vote make sure you remember not to vote for Ms. Reynolds, Mrs. Lox, Mrs. E and Mr. Harris. Page 7 Have you heard of Pantelligent Have you heard of Pantelligent? Well if not, we will be telling you about it. Pantelligent is a frying pan that is connects to your Smartphone. It then cooks the food with temperature control and step by step instructions on how to cook your food. It’s currently in alpha stage of testing. It should be ready for release by summer of 2015. The pan will make it like Gordon Ramsey would of made it and then literally beat it. And that’s good. This PAN gets a 7/10.141592 on the T@c0C@t scale. By: Wesley Stewart and EricR. “It will be the savior of the kitchen” – Gordon Ramsey impersonator Turducken By DJ John and Paula Deen A turducken is a de-boned chicken stuffed inside a de-boned duck stuffed inside a de-boned turkey. Let’s shed some light on this turducken if you don’t know what it is. First: There was darkness. Then the Big Bang happened and gave the universe some light. Next a bunch of rocks just started smashing into each other, forming planets and moons and asteroids and solar systems and whatnot. Then that one fiery soup happened and small amoebas came out of it, eventually turning into dinosaurs, but they were dumb so they died. Humans showed up at some point, and just kind of puttered around for a few hundred thousand years. Then they, in their infinite wisdom, made the turducken and lived happily ever after. The turducken can be prepared any way that a turkey can be prepared. You can also put an awesome seasoning on it, here is the recipe. Mix ingredients together and store in an airtight container for up to 6 months. Dressing: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. To make the cornbread, combine all ingredients and pour into a greased shallow baking dish. Bake for approximately 20 to 25 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool. To make the dressing, crumble dried white bread slices, cornbread and crackers. Mix together and set aside. Saute chopped celery and onion in butter until transparent, approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Pour over corn bread mixture. Add stock, mix well and add salt, pepper, sage, and poultry seasoning. Add beaten eggs and mix well. Follow instructions above to stuff birds. Yield: 8 to 10 servings I wish John could be Paula Deen because if he was I could finally have a slave that could cook me macaroni.-Wesley Stewart A.K.A the guy who kidnapped Senpai Blast From The Past Page 8 Woo wee did you feel that blast I’m not wearing pants anymore. Welcome back to Blast From The Past. We have recently added back our lost member; we were forced to by blackmail. This week we are doing a review on the Sega Nomad. The Sega Nomad is a handheld gaming console by Sega that was released in October of 1995. It is a portable console that only plays Genesis games. It has a 3.25 inch LCD screen. It has an A/V output which allows it to connect to a T.V. It is powered by six AA which allows it with 2 hours of battery life. This game console is given a 9/10 on the Delmar scale By: Wesley Stewart and (The forced returner) Delmar “If you find one of these sell it to Mr. Harris” Mr. Harris 2k14 Have You Seen the New Movie Mocking Jay Part 1 Have you seen the new movie Mocking Jay part 1!? Once Katniss got to district 13 they convinced her to be She went to district 8 and helped rally the wounded. She then attempted to save the hospital from capital bombers, but she failed miserably (all the wounded died). Shortly after that the districts made an attack on a hydro dam and cut power the capital. While the power was out a team went into the capitol to rescue Peeta and the other victors. Piercings By: Camryn, Breanna, and Peyton Piercings; it’s a very debatable topic. Some people are against it, and others are for it and have piercings themselves. Now here is our view of piercings. Peyton says: “ Guys should not get piercings. It’s disgusting!” Breanna says: “ It really depends on why they want them. If its just for no reason then no, but if its for something that you have to do, then ok. Camryn says: “ Guys should definitely not get piercings doesn’t matter where; don’t get them! For girls it’s ok. I’m not fond of eyebrow piercings, or belly-button rings, and definitely not tongue piercings. I can live with nose piercings.” We took a series of interviews that included three top questions: Do you think guys having piercings is okay?, If so what kind?, and what kind of piercings should girls have? We asked four boys about what they thought about piercings. The first boy said, “Guys should not get ear piercings of any kind.” The second boy said, “Boys shouldn’t have any piercings that hurt or are completely gross.” The third boy said, “No to boys having any piercings.” And the fourth boy said, “boys shouldn’t get piercings on the ears.” We interviewed four girls also. One said, “I am was totally against piercings.” The second one said the same thing. The third one said that she might get a nose piercing. The fourth one said she might get a bellybutton ring. So as we can see everybody has their own opinions about piercings. But they are still gross! (the sky!) But seriously. Let’s get on with this DJ and John love cats so much that they decided to continue this article. If you love cats read this article or the cats will not love you. There are over 500 million domestic cats in the entire world. Cats and humans have been associated for nearly 10,000 years. A male cat is called a tom, so if you have a male cat named tom he just thinks you are calling him man. A female cat is called a Molly or a queen. So if you have a female cat named molly she thinks you are just calling her your girl. Domestic cats usually weigh around 8lbs to 11lbs so if your cat is over that put it on a diet. The heaviest domestic cat on record was 46 lbs. Older cats can sometimes act aggressive to kittens. (back in my day we kittens had to fight for our milk). On average cats can live for around 12 to 15 years so if you don’t like your cat… it’s going to be with you for a while. The way cats bathe themselves is by licking their coat. So there ya go kitties hahahaha (pun intended).
