THE LINK / LE LIEN - Alzheimer Society of Canada
April 2014 /avril 2014 Spring / Le printemps THE LINK / LE LIEN It is our pleasure to announce that effective April 1, 2014, the Sudbury-Manitoulin and the North Bay & Districts chapters of the Alzheimer Society will be merging to become the Alzheimer Society Sudbury-Manitoulin North Bay & Districts, Société Alzheimer Sudbury-Manitoulin North Bay et districts. The integration represents a pooling of expertise, bringing together two strong organizations, restructuring functions and practices and bringing forth common regional visions, efficiencies and collaborative practices. Our goal is to provide access to services that are common in both communities to more of those affected by the disease. Local offices and presence will remain as such. Donors can be confident that their contributions to local activities will remain as intended. Volunteers will continue to experience a solid relationship with their colleagues in supporting, directly and indirectly, those going through the dementia journey. For more information or to discuss partnership possibilities please call (705) 560-0603. Since last April our volunteers have donated over 2,500 hours of their time, and we are very grateful! The Society is lucky to have a large, growing team of passionate volunteers that help to run our many programs and services. Our Day Program, support groups, board and committees, office, fundraisers and events would not run as smoothly if it wasn’t for the time and dedication that you give us. As the Society continues to grow and create new programs to further help our community you will continue to play an important part in our successes. Without you, much of what we do would not be possible; you are an integral part of our team and on behalf of all of the staff I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for all of your hard work. Vanessa Woods, Volunteer Coordinator AN ALZHEIMER’S REQUEST (Poem by Owen Darnell) Do not ask me to remember, Don’t try to make me understand, Let me rest and know you’re with me, Kiss my cheek and hold my hand. I'm confused beyond your concept, I am sad and sick and lost, All I know is that I need you, To be with me at all costs. Please do not lose your patience with me, Do not scold me or curse or cry, I can’t help the way I’m acting, I can’t be different though I try. Just remember that I need you, And the best of me is gone, Please don't fail to stand beside me, And love me till my life is done. The Link / Le Lien Spring / Le printemps Page 7 DAY PROGRAM NEWS The winter that never seems to end has not dampened our spirits here at the Day Program. We are always finding new and creative ways to stay active and engaged. Our latest endeavour is our mock Olympics with events such as table curling, hockey shoot, mock skiing (aka urban poling) and Olympic ring toss. So far it has been a tremendous hit, and has provided a much needed form of indoor exercise. We are in the process of scheduling our latest “Living through the Arts” initiatives. This year we will be focusing on three types of art related activities. We will be continuing the very successful drumming sessions with Jeff. Back by popular demand is Val, our storyteller and we will be introducing Angela Pepin who will be providing ballroom dancing sessions. With the new volunteer initiatives put forth by our Volunteer Coordinator Vanessa Woods, we have secured many new volunteers who are assisting in providing small group activities helping to expand the variety of programs for our Day Program clients to become involved in. We hope to further develop these programs and run groups for special interests. Our sights are set on a scrapbooking program and possibly a quilting program. Thank you to all our volunteers who help keep the programs relevant and interesting for our clients. As we look towards the spring, which I am sure will arrive, sooner rather than later, we will start planning our garden and preparing for some exciting outdoor activities. Each day that passes brings us one day closer to springtime!!! This exciting event will take place on Friday, June 20, 2014 at Callander’s unique course Osprey Links. Entry fee is $85 per person which includes 18 holes of golf, a cart and dinner. There will be gift bags for everyone, prizes as well as silent and live auctions. “Osprey Links Golf Course is a Rene Muylaert par 71 design. Playing at 6,442 yards from the Championship Tees, this professionally designed course offers something for every level of player. The front 9 is a traditional links style golf course with eight strategically placed ponds enhancing every hole, while the back nine is a completely different challenge. Being almost completely cut out of the forest, it features tree-bordered fairways and extreme elevations. Contoured fairways with two contrasting cuts of rough and more than forty bunkers make this course a truly memorable experience.” Please contact Linda Brown at 705-495-4342 for further details. The Link / Le Lien Spring / Le printemps Page 9 Retirement After 25yrs of Service… It is with mixed emotions, that after 25 years with the Alzheimer Society that I will be retiring on April 9. During that time, I have seen many challenges, changes and growth within the Society. When I was first hired, we were housed in a small trailer. I worked diligently on my typewriter, creating our newsletter by pasting clip art and photocopying articles. We had two clients per day coming to our Day Program and there were approximately seven employees total. Over the years, this gave way to computers and the newest technology. Our staff numbers over 30 at the present time. We serve over 3000 clients in our various programs and we are housed in a state-of-the-art facility. I am proud of my contributions during this time, as Office Coordinator and in my favourite role in fundraising. I was blessed to have worked with such dedicated volunteers who gave so willingly of their time to assist the Society. Throughout the years, I have worked with a complement of devoted and resourceful colleagues and I am proud of the assistance they give to those as they journey through Alzheimer’s disease. I hope to see you again at some of the events hosted by the Society.
