acceptance, refusal, or a desire on
the part of the girl to wait in her

Harriet Henders, talented young

Cherkassky has appeared in

Miss Henders had the distinction of being chosen for the leading operatic role of "Fidelio" in

the European war. Because of
world conditions and the discontinuation of the f a m o u s festival

Music Students Will

Hope will enroll more students
in the department of music this
year than in any other year in the
recent history of the school, according to Mrs. W. Curtis Snow,
instructor in organ. The increase
will affect study in voice, organ
and piano. The department will be
expanded to accommodate this revived interest in musical work.
J a m e s T. Mearns, director of
band and orchestra, will conduct
a class in instrumental playing.
A class in sight singing and ear
training will also be introduced.
The latter course is intended f o r
the average layman student who
wishes to gain a general knowledge
of music but does not intend to
specialize in t h a t field.
Mrs. S n o w also stated t h a t
Robert Cavanaugh, instructor in
vocal music, Mr. M e a m s , and she
hope to organize all music students
into a group which will have its
own program and which will t a k e

Dear Editor.
Let's h/iake It Good,
Anchor Toasts New Year
Once again we begin a new school year, some of us for the
last time, and some of us for the first time.
Those of us who are completing our school life realize what
a great deal the past three years have meant to us. That old
lump sticks in our throat when we look forward to commencement exercises and final departure from school days.
For those to whom college is novel, the year is clouded with
an atmosphere of glamour and excitement. The frosh anticipate those advertised assignments sweetened with fun galore.
But to all of us, this school year means one more year of
preparation for life. And in the midst of hardships and deprivations, we appreciate the opportunity to attend school.
So let's toast to the school year of '41 and '42 — may it be
entirely successful for Hope college, its faculty, and its
students.
