17 Young Muslim Adults MAGAZINE l!Y Aa{;ar A. Khan Young uslim Ad·U ts A Night with Br. Amir Muhadith As night begins to form its dusk, aspiring Muslims begin to arrive at the Masjid Islamic Center of San Gabriel Valley for I'sha Prayer, apart from those who await for Salaat to begin, many volunreers begin assisting in the preparation for a special night. Aside from the gorgeous view of the current Construction on the upcoming Masjid for ICSGV, many young Muslim boys and girls, men and women, gather tonight and await brother Arnir Muhadith a.k.a. (Loonj's arrival and discussion on current topics within Islam, the Qur'an, and Sunnah .. One of the aspiring youth's begins to sound the A'daan as many brother's make for Wu'Du, I enter respectfully, soundly, and begin my Sunnah prayers. As I'sha salat led beautifully by Hafiz Orner Razzaq, ends, brothers and sisters begin taking their seats within the Masjid. The event is hosted by Br. Ali Jakwani, who, minutes after Salat, introduces Br. Arnir Muhadith. Br, Ali is a proud member of the Young Adults ofICSGY, currently being competently led by Br. Zohair Vaid, jazzakullah Khairun for your efforts. Br. Muhadith warmly greets the crowd, as I quietly take a seat to listen. As he begins to speak, everyone is paying attention, the sisters sitting in the back, and the brothers in the front. Br. Muhadith mentions different aspects of how islam has recently been affecting him, and the Nur on his face defines his happiness. Aside from his initial visit, this time it was more of a collaborative effort from the parents, and kids, asking questions for Br. Muhadith's response. Questions begin to pile up, as time is short, he tries his best to appease as many as possible. Anonymously announced, one question arises for Br. Muhadith, rriaybe asked by a youth, ifBr. Arnir will ever "rap" again, Rap is the musical genre of which the former artist used to belong to very vibrantly. But his statement was as dear and usual as ever, he stated "Will i Rap again? The answer is simple, No, instead i will speak about this deen to you muslims." Subhanallah. Another question was addressed, this time by an adult with a son and a concern. The question stated "My son is 15, and I want him to grow up with the deen, what are some of the bad things you've done, and what good have to done to correct them." Br. Muhadith warmly answered. "rather then mentioning the bad. I wouldn't want to influence or mention any wrongful acts, but the best thing I've done, the best decision i've made, was converting to islarn, and becoming a muslim." As the night was drawing to an end, a man in the crowd asked his question out loud, personally and directly to Br. Arnir. His question basically involved all the distractions of the dunya, even while driving to the masjid, "How can i protect my child from these things?" Br. Arnir began responding, but his answer surprised me as well, and gave me an understanding that we need to make dua for Br. Arnie Muhadith. He answered to the brother "Subhanallah, your son is a muslim; I have a 16 year old daughter, who is not a muslim, I have situations to deal with such as her bringing home a boy, her going out, and living life as a non-muslim." This statement was somewhat surprising to me, but also it is imperative all of us make Dua for Br. Muhadith and his ease with this situation. As the event drew to an end, I stood up and began preparing (0 hand out dinner, thanks be to Br. Maher, everyone along with Br. Arnir joined at the tables for a late dinner as well as enjoyed his company as well as the Beef stew with Irani rice and salad which was hwnbly satisfying. We look forward to another great evening with Br. Arnie Muhadith and may Allah bless his journey in this dunya, may his dua's be accepted, and may Jannah be granted for him and his family Insha'Allah. You have probably heard numerous accounts of discrimination committed against fellow humans - you've heard the stories on rhe news and even from your friends. Perhaps there is no greater tale of injustice rhan that of Abdulrahman Zeitoun, an innocent, honorable man labeled as a terrorist. His story is told by Dave Eggers in his narrative nonfiction "Zeitoun", named after rhe innocent man and his family. Told simply and powerfully, "Zeitoun" makes readers wonder in disbelief, "How could this possibly happen in America:" Zeitoun, a Syrian-American painter and contractor, was living in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina struck. His children and wife Karhy evacuate to live with relatives, but Zeitoun is set on staying behind. Overnight, his world becomes a watery ocean. He lives on the roof of his drowned house, paddling around in a second-hand canoe to deliver what clean water he had to survivors and food to starving dogs. At first, Zeiroun is affected only by the destruction of rhe hurricane. He is appalled by the police and soldiers in the city, for they simply ignore rhe residents' cries for help. Yet he persists, telling his wife over the phone rhat he was meant to be in New Orleans. He is elated to be useful, and readers come to like him for his selflessness and love for his family Soon, however, rhings get unbelievably worse. Zeitoun is arrested and what follows is any Arab-American's nightmare. The book is more rhan just background information, rhough. To write it, Eggers met with Zeitoun's family and visited his relatives in Syria and Spain. Working closely with these people, he compiled a book rhat alternates between rhe present and rhe past to tell Zeitoun's story to rhe world. It tells of Abdulrahman's hard work which enabled him to become successful in a new COUntry. It also tells of his wife Kathy's conversion from Christianity to Islam and her struggle with the hijab and her family. "Zeiroun" is riveting in its honesty and horrifying in its trurh. Zeitoun is a story about the trials of a fanlily before, during, and after Hurricane Katrina, It is not only heartwarming, but eyeopening as well. His book examines rhe negative effects of the war on terrorism, clashing wirh the more-than-natural disaster Hurricane Katrina. Eggers tells rhe swry as it is, wirhout embellishment or bias. The way he handles his subject, by letting it speak for itself, is awardworthy: "Zeitoun" has received the Goodreads Choice Award Nominee for Nonfiction. This book will always serve as a reminder for the Americans of a horrible mistake in our history. Sherine Khafogy My name is Sherine Khafagy. I was born and raised in Alexandria, Egypt. I carne to the United States in December 1992, when I married my husband, AshrafHabbak. I have three kids, ages 15, 13, and 10. I completed my education in Egypt where I received my Bachelor's degree in accounting in 1989 from University of Alexandria. I chose not to pursue my professional Career but stay home to raise my children. I was very active raising my kids and at rhe same time exploring my new life here. I have always volunteered at my kids' schools, private Islamic schools as well as public schools. Alhamdullilah, I was always active within the Muslim community as well as rhe society at large. I was blessed having a number of Quran teachers. I attended regularly Quran classes and this is how I got in troduced to rhe new Muslim group where they asked me to teach rhem how to read the Noble Quran. I worked very hard to gain more knowledge and some techniques to teach beginners the fundamental steps that must be acquired in order to read rhe Quran with proper rajweed. Alhamdulillah, I have been teaching for the last 3 years, and wirh the grace of Allah (SWT), my students are readers now. In March 2009, I was asked to move my class from my house to the San Gabriel Masjid, where I had new faces joining my class, not only from the new Muslim group but also orher Muslims rhat needed to improve rheir reading. The purpose of the class is focusing on the pronunciation of each letter of the Arabic Alphabet by studying the Makharij (the places where each letter is coming from), as well as rhe attributes of each letter, for rhe purpose of reciting rhe Quran in the correct way and not confusing rhe letters. The Arabic language is very sophisticated; any slight change done to any letter may change the whole meaning. The Noble Quran is the words of Allah (SWT) descended on the propher (PB VH) through Angel Gabriel (PBUH). We need to do our best not to mispronounce any letter or any short or long vowel as it will change or alter the meanings of the Noble Quran. The Sunnah of the prophet (PBUH) was to teach the Sahabah (may Allah be pleased with them) ten verses from the words of Allah after he learned them from Angel Gabriel (pbuh), then the Prophet (pbuh) would not move on to the next verses until the Sahabah (may Allah be pleased with them) would study them and act accordingly. During class we also try to read some tafseer and learn some of the vocabulary to help us to understand the message of the Noble Quran. + WIRE & CABLE, INC. You 've often wondered ifit is worth paying a little extra for the organic product instead of the regular product you are used to buying. It IS worth it, especially when it comes to your meat and dairy products. This article will outline the meaning and value of organic items and why we should support their production and sales. What exactly does organic mean? Organic practices refer to conventional agricultural practices from the past, before industrialization and mass production of food. It is not a special type of product; it refers to food from animals and produce that are grown as nature intended. Organic food comes from animals kept in living conditions that accommodate their natural behavior and are free of hormones and antibiotics. Chicken on organic farm Further, organic fruits and vegetables are free from harmful pesticides. Because of mass production, organic foods now seem to be a foreign type of food, when in fact they should be the norm. Food products in markets and restaurants not labeled organic should actually be regarded as strange. That is because non-organic foods like beef, chicken, milk, cheese and eggs are subjected to unnatural practices making them harmful for us. Animal products from cows and chickens that are not labeled organic, including USDA-certified meat, are filled with hormones, antibiotics, and fed blood and leftover animal parts, even those found on the floor. California Cows are not Happy: Hormones According to reports from Cornell University, USDA, PETA, nonorganic cattle are subjected to many practices that make their products extremely harmful to us. Cattle are injected with the hormones estradiol, testosterone, progesterone, zeranol and melegesterol acetate. Eating meat from these cattle increases the risk of cancer, infertility, and reproductive complications. Milking cow on non-organic farm We should also avoid drinking non-organic milk and milk products like cheese and yogurt. Milk- producing cattle are injected with a hormone called recombinant bovine growth hormone, or rBCH. Numerous studies have linked rBCh to colon, breast, and prostate cancer. rBGH also increases the risk of cancer and type-2 diabetes by increasing levels of the hormone insulin growth factor-I in the body. These 6 hotmones are linked to the earlier age of puberty in girls that has occurred in recent history, which increases the risk of breast cancer. Studies suggest rBGH could be a contributing factor to the increase in twin births in the past 30 years. The hormone rBGH causes cows to produce milk beyond their natural ability, leading to a painful udder infection called mastitis. When these cows are milked, the pus and blood from the infection enter the milk supply, which is still sold to consumers- and is approved by the USDA! Bacteria from mastitis is ··linkedto Crohn's disease. As the Quran states, "Verilyin cattle will yc find an instructive Sign. From what is within their bodies, between excretions and blood, we produce for your drink milk pure and agreeable to those who drink it." 16:66. Since Allah states that we should drink only the milk of a cow, it is important to drink milk that does not contain any impurities. Hormones in cattle, as well as pus in a c B; Shireen Hakim, M.S. Human Nutrition, M.PH. Nutrition and Dietetics milk is banned in Europe, however it is still practiced in the US. Canada has also banned rBCH in their milk. A number of American school districts and dairy product manufacturers provide dairy products without rBCH. A link with a list of these dairy product manufacturers can be found at the end of this article. Some acceptable products include Ben and Jerry's ice cream, Mountain High yogurt, and Stonyfield Farms products. Nobody in Here but us Chickens: Antibiotics Because of the cramped, crowded and unsanitary conditions of nonorganic farms also called factory farms, chickens are fed antibiotics to prevent disease outbreaks and to promote growth. These antibiotics remain in the chicken meat and eggs that we consume, causing bacteria to evolveinto more resistant and stronger strains, The use of antibiotics in our food is causing a crisis in our society. One antibiotic given to chickens is roxarsone otherwise known as a.rsenic. Arsenic causes such health problems as poisoning, heart disease, cancer, decreased brain function, diabetes, and sore throar. Further, bacteria that could norma.lly be treated with penicillin and retracyclin are now resistant to these antibiotics. This makes them less effective in treating patients and is leading to deadly bacterial infections. A specific example of this is the bacteria S. aureus, which is now resistant to a number of antibiotics such as Penicillin, Methicillin, and Vancomycin. A main of this bacteria, MRSA (Methicillin-resistant S. aureus), is rampant in hospitals and responsible for many deaths. According to the CDC since 1999 S. aureus strains have been responsible for 500,000 hospital deaths and MRSA has been responsible for 300,000 deaths. This phenomenon is a major public health issue, and researchers say that we must stop using antibiotics in our poultry because eventually bacteria will be so resistant to antibiotics that we will be unable to control their spread. Old MacDonald HAD a Farm: Abnormal Feeding and Living Practices Cramped cattle in non-organic farm Cows and chickens in non-organic farms are fed unconventional foods that lead to an impure and unhealthy product. Biologically, chickens should eat oats, soy and greens and cows should eat only grass or hay. Instead, on factory farms they are actually fed rendered animal products ,consisting of leftover animalproducrs from slaughtered animals, bone meal, blood meal, hoof meal, poultry meal, waste, etc. These animal-products are remnants of animals that have just been sl'\p.ghtcred, and can come frum the floor of the slaughterhouse. This feed increases protein levels in our system whicp can lead to kidney disease a.!~t:losteoporosis. The.•outbreaks of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, or Mad Cow Disease occ!J!ired because cattle were fed leftover cow parts. This practice is now banned, however since cows are fed products from the 21 Medicine Go · a rganlc floors of the slaughterhouse they can still be fed cow. Since 2006 the USDA has cut back on testing of Mad Cow Disease and only tests 40,000 cattle annually. Although not every recall of meat infected with Mad Cow Disease is announced to the public, it continuously occurs, and according to CDC the last outbreak of Mad Cow Disease was in May 2009. Meat from these cows is significantly lower in omega-S fatty acids and higher in total fat content compared to meat from grass-fed cows. Also, cows that are fed soy and corn have high incidences of E. coli. There are continuous recalls of beef and chicken due to E. coli outbreaks, and according to CDC the latest outbreak was in July 2009. Further, manure from E. coli infected cows can be used to fertilize produce and leads to E. coli outbreaks. A specific example of this is the well-publicized outbreak of E. coli in spinach in 2006. Eating organic meat greatly reduces the risk of contracting these deadly diseases. Non-organic farms are run more like factories, and animals live in very uncomfortable and unsanitary conditions. Chickens are kept in battery cages, where they are so restricted for space they can't even spread their wings. To prevent them from pecking each other chickens' beaks are cut ofF. This is very painful for them and makes it difficult for them to eat. Baby cows are fed formula made of cow plasma proteins and whey protein instead of their mother's milk. Instead of being allowed to roam and graze as nature intended, cows are kept in cramped quarters, squashed together without any room to move. These large-scale, overcrowded farms have led to mutations of avian and swine flu which should have remained diseases only among the animal kingdom. In England, the virulent avian flu strain first broke out at the country's largest turkey farm in early 2007. Unhygienic conditions allowed these flues to persist and mutate and they are now deadly diseases among the human population. The number of deaths from swine flu is and from avian flu is continually growing, and experts .say there is a serious risk of contracting swine flu this upcoming flu season. Sounds Fishy We have learned that eating fish is very healthy for us, and it is- as long as you buy the right type of fish. Make sure not to buy fish that has been tarm-raised or from ocean aquaculture or off-shore aquaculture. These fish are useless to you because they do not contain the healthy omega-3 fatty acids that we should get from fish. Farmraise fish are not fed algae which is required to produce high levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the fish. Therefore they have very low levels of omega-a's. Also these fish are harmful CO us because they comain pollutants, antibiotics and chemicals such as mercury. Instead we should only eat fish that is "wild" or wild c.aughr. In the case of salmon for example it is better to get Pacihc wild salmon instead of Adamic are especially harmful to infants and children because they can interfere with their growth process and may not be completely eliminated from the body. Multiple studies have shown that organic produce has higher levels of 8 out of 10 nutrients compared to non-organic produce. These nutrients include polyphenols and antioxidants (linked to lower risk of lung cancer and heart disease, as well as to greater longevity). The following are known as the dirty dozen and should be eaten organically because they contain the highest level of pesticides: Peach Apple, Bell Pepper, Celery, Nectarine, Strawberries, Cherries, Kale, Lettuce, Grapes (Imported), Carrot, and Pear. In contrast the following have low levels of pesticides and it may be acceptable to buy-non organic: Onion, Avocado, Sweet Corn, Pineapple, Mango, Asparagus, Sweet Peas, Kiwi, Cabbage, Eggplant, Papaya, Watermelon, Broccoli, Tomato and Sweet Potato. Slaughtering Practices Prior to slaughter, chickens may be stunned by an electrical bolt or asphyxiated by C02 and N2. Sheep and cattle are mechanically stunned prior to slaughter. Occasionally the animals undergo cardiac arrest at this point and arc still slaughtered. Animals that will be sold as zabiha are not subjected to any of these treatments. Conclusion Based on these inhumane, harmful and unethical practices that take place in American Iarms, it is necessaty for us as Muslims to take care when purchasing food. As Allah tells us in the Quran: "Oh ye who believe! Enjoy all things good and pure," (23:51). For our health and longevity, as well as the best treatment of the animals, it is best to suppOrt organic practices. By eating organically we will eliminate the abnormal practices in non-organic farms and eventually they will become obsolete. Here are several resources to begin you on your journey to safe and healthy lifestyle. I have learned that many popular Halal meat markets sell organic meat: Al Jabani, Basha, Al Tayabar, Super King and Wholesome Choice. I am unaware of the meat sources from popular halal restaurants; however non-halal restaurants such as Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut adhere to many of the harmful practices outlined in this article. Read labels carefully when buying fish and ask what type of fish you arc being served at restaurants. An Apple a Day May Not Keep the Doctor Away; Pesticides Non-organic fruits and vegetables are sprayed with pesticides to eliminate pest issues. Experts believe that pesticides even in small amounts can cause birth defects, nerve damage, and cancer. Pesticides 1211 W. Moulana Abdul Aziz First Imam o/the Islamic Center of San Gabriel Valley As Remembered by Br. Afta! Hussain Moulana Abdul Aziz, the first Imam of the Islamic Center of San Gabriel Valley passed away on January 23, 2010 at the age of96 at his home in German Town, Tennessee. He is survived by 2 sons, 3 daughters, 2 daughters-in-law, 4 sons-in-law and 18 grandchildren. May Allah bless him, grant him Jannah and give patience to his family. Many of us know Moulana Abdul Aziz as a kind hearted gende person, always greeting with a smile and ready to serve the community day or night. Many children in this community first learned to read the holy Qur'an from Moulana Aziz. The year was 1986, Islamic Center of San Gabriel Valley moved from a rented facility on Colima Road to its new home, a remodeled Church, on Walnut Drive North in Rowland Heights, California. Dr. Noor Jehan Mohamedi, our first principal ofIslamic Sunday School introduced Moulana Abdul Aziz, a retired textile engineering executive, to Br. Abu Bakr Vakil, Vice-President of the Islamic Center, Br, Abu Bakr Vakil interviewed Moulana Aziz and with the blessing of the shura hired him as a Custodian & Imarn of the Islamic Center. He immediately elected to make the masjid his primary residence, taking care of it day and night, opening it for all five daily prayers, keeping the premises dean, giving the adaan for prayers and leading the prayers. In between prayers he would set aside time to teach reading of the holy Qur' an. A couple of years later, when the adjacent properties were purchased, he moved into one of the houses with his family. After Moulana Asif was hired as a hafiz and Imam, Moulana Aziz started devoting more time to the teaching of the holy Qur' an. Although he was not Aalim, he had great basic Islamic knowledge. Many cifus, particularly my Eunily and I gained a lor of knowledge from him. My eldest son was among his first batch of students to complete the recitation of the holy Qur' an. His students loved him. His art to teaching was patience and compassion, He devotedly served the Islamic Center for many years in spite of his age and related deteriorating health. In the year 1997 his health forced him to move to Tennessee to live with his family. He visited the Islamic Center few times and was always very happy to meet the community members. "It was scandalous that the Swissvoted for the ban. Now we have the support of all the farright parties across Europe. This is shameful," Guillaume Morand, who owns a chain of shoe stores, told AFP. The businessman, who is not a Muslim, explained that the he had constructed the mock minaret at his building near western Switzerland's city of Lausanne in protest, and at the same time, to "send a message of peace." More than 57 percem of voters upset opinion polls and defied their government by approving the right wing motion to ban minarets -- the turrets or towers on mosques from which Muslims are called to prayer. The outcome of the referendum brought by members of the hard-right SwissPeople's Parry (SVP) and other right wing groups was also hailed by anti-immigrant parry leaders elsewhere in Europe. Morand blamed other political parties in Switzerland for not having campaigned against the far-right motion ahead of the referendum. "They were all against it but they did not explain the issue clearly to the country," he said, pointing out that only the SVP's controversial poster campaign was visible. The SVP had sought support for the ban through a poster campaign depicting a burqa-dad woman against a background of a Swiss flag upon which several minarets resembling AFP - View of a minaret built on the top of a chimney in Bussigny-pres-Lausanne western of Sioistzerland, to ... missiles are erected. Morand said he viewed the ban was all the more "scandalous" given that Switzerland actively encourages Arabs to "visit the COUntryand to spend their money here." The minaret, which has been in place since Tuesday, has "generated a lot of interest," he said, adding that he will wait and see before deciding if further action was needed to push his point. Obama names U.S. envoy to Islamic Conference President Obama announced Saturday the appointment of Rashad Hussain, a White House lawyer, to be his special envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference. Obama made the announcement in a video conference to the U.S.-Islamic World Forum in Doha, Qatar. In his message,Obama called Hussain "an accomplished lawyer and a close and trusted member of my White House staff," who would strengthen his policy of outreach to the world's Muslims. Obama has made repairing U.S. relations with the Islamic world an important element of his foreign policy, an effort highlighted by his call for a "new beginning" in a speech in Cairo last June. In the statement Saturday, Obama said Iiussain has "played a key role in developing the partnerships I called for in Cairo," and would continue to do so in his new position. Obama noted that Hussain is a Hafiz of the Koran, someone who has memorized the holy Islamic text. The Organi~ation of the Islamic Conference comprises 57 nations with a goal of promoting Muslim unity. As a deputy associate counsel to Obama, Hussain has worked on national security, new media, and science and technology issues, according to a White House statement. He previously worked as a trial attorney for the Justice Department and as a legislativeassistant on the House Judiciary Committee. Hussain attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned his law degree from YaleLaw School. He holds master's degrees in public administration and Arabic and Islamic studies from Harvard University. Raza's Associates 27 World News MAGAZINE Muslim Warld Burka Barbies From Barbie Beach to Pilot Barbie to Hard Rock Barbie, the glamorous and iconic doll has undergone many rnakeovcrs since her creation 50 years ago, but none of her previous outfits has probably stirred as much buzz as her latest Islamic look. It's Barbie in a burka, as it's been dubbed by the yellow press. Wearing the traditional Islamic dress with a mesh eyehole, she went under the hammer along wirh 500 other Barbie dolls dressed in unique outfits at an auction in Florence, Italy, at the renowned auction house Sotheby's to raise funds for Save the Children. The auction, held in late November, was part of the celebrations put on for Barbie this year as she celebrated her 50th anniversary. In her new look, Barbie also appeared in a line of stylish turquoise, lime-green, orange-colored burkas and regular head-covering Muslim veil, known as hijab. The set of multicultural Barbies, including the burka-c1ad one, was dressed by the Italian designer Eliana Lorena in a project backed by Barbie's owner, Martel. Opinion has been divided on Burka Barbie. Fan Angela Ellis, who has a collection of more than 250 Barbie dolls, thought it was a good idea to introduce a veiled Barbie. That way, children living in conservative Islamic countries would have a doll they could identify with. "Bring it on, Burka Barbie," Britain's the Sun newspaper quoted her as saying. "This is really important for girls, wherever they are from, they should have the opportunity to play with a Barbie that they feel represents them." Bur nor everyone shared such exciremenr avec Barbie's new conservative Islamic look. Critics such as Barbara Kay in Canada slammed Barbie's Muslim dress as a "symbol of oppression" and ripped Ellis' commentary in an article recently published in Canada's the National Post newspaper. "I have seen some pretty tawdry advertising campaigns in my time, but I must say [his one takes the cake for insensitivity. What's next in dolls that are 'important foc girls' to play with? 'Illiterate Barbie'? 'Forced-Marriage Barbie'?" she wrote. Instead, Kay branded Burka Barbie a "mockery of disern- powered women" who, she said, have been "stripped of human dignity." She felt the doll had no place in Mattel's line of "diversity" Barbies. "There can be no parallel between these travesties of multiculturalism and other 'diversity' Barbies -- brown Barbies, native-dress Barbies, pilot Barbies -- avatars that reflect the natural appearance and truly traditional garb and career choices of free women," she wrote. The Barbie also has managed to stir the pot in the blogosphere. Responding to a post on the blog Kabobfest, which argues that "it's kinda somewhat cool" of Mattei to pur out a veiled Barbie, one commentator sarcastically suggested the Barbie makers introduce a line of "neocon pro-freedom Barbies" to balance our Burka Barbie. Burka Barbie is not the first Islamic-styled doll for girls. Back in 2003, the United Arab Emirates-based company Newboy launched the Muslim doll Fulla, resulting in some fierce competition for Barbie. Unlike [he skimpy and revealing outfits of blond and blue-eyed Barbie, dark-eyed Fulla wears more modest clothes and hairdos, to the delight of the authorities in conservative Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iran who previously targeted the original Barbie in crackdowns. In 2003, Saudi Arabia called Barbie a "symbol of decadence to the perverted West" and banned the doll. Last year, Barbie came under fire in Iran when Iranian prosecutor Ghorban Ali Dori Najafabadi said the dolls were "destructive culturally and a social danger." Barbie's veiled rival has become a smash hit in the Middle East, with more than 1.5 million dolls sold in the first two years of its making. -- Alexandra Sandels in Beirut Photos, from top: Barbie received an Islamic makeover for her 50th anniversary. Columbus Controversy According to the Wall Srreet Journal, 22 states don't observe the holiday. Why the disparity? Well, among other reasons, a strong contingent feels that the Genoese navigator's sailing the ocean blue in 1492 introduced a dark period of colonization. Protesters and academics have argued for years that the existing American population, plus earlier evidence of Viking houseguests, make the notion of" discovery" misleading. These impassioned arguments around Columbus go back decades before any holiday: Efforts to make the Italian navigator a candidate for sainthood inspired a tart New York Times editorial that said Columbus got his "fleets at public expense, on the condition that he remove himself and his tediousness as far as possible toward the unknown west." (AP) A giant steel float that will be part of a "floating island" in Seoul boasting off-shore entertainment facilities began a snails-paced trip towards the city's Han River Saturday. The football-field-sized structure, resembling the hull of a cargo ship, moved at a barely noticeable speed over rows of giant rubber airbags from a riverside assembly site to the water just 60 merres (198 feet) away. Linked by huge iron chains to giant winches, the buoy weighing 2,000 tonnes was not due to reach the water until Sunday. The three-metre high float, 85 rrictres long and 49 metres wide, will be pan of Viva, one of three artificial islets to be built near the southern end of Banpo Bridge. Along with two other artificial islets, Vista and Tera, to be launched by the end of April, the cluster of man-made floating islets will be used for conventions, water sPOrtS,restaurants, performances and exhibitions. The project will be completed and open to the public in August. "We hope that the floating island will serve as Seoul's new landmark," a Seoul city government spokeswoman said. The Joint Srrike Fighter was supposed to be the program that broke the mold, proof that the Pentagon could build something affordable, dependable and without much drama. But rather than being the Chevrolet of the skies, as it was once billed, the fighter plane, also called the F-35, has turned into the Pentagon's biggest budgetbuster. And with worries growing that the rise in costs could overwhelm other programs, Defense Secretary Robert M.
