I attended Liberty University in Virginia, where I met my wife, Debra. After marrying, we chose to live in York, PA. Family is, and has always been important to me, and we wanted our children to be around their grandparents. Our families and communities now face challenges of poverty, homelessness, violence, crime, mental health concerns, child abuse and neglect. These obstacles prevent children and their families from thriving and threaten their survival. As we commit to growing strong families, Family Services will continue to provide services that help others during difficult times and create opportunities for others to thrive. Our Big Brothers Big Sisters program is essential to making that happen. I was raised in rural Michigan. Most people were known by name, we were active in our church, and there was a sense of community and belonging. I wanted some of those experiences for my three daughters. As I join this team and this community, I recognize that I share in the responsibility of continuing the tradition of serving. As we at Family Services look to our future, I reflect back on some of my early years. I benefitted from a loving family and of belonging to a community. We learned that more was accomplished when everyone shared in the effort and that our neighbors sometimes needed help. At that time, the kids and I moved back home to Erie to be closer to our family. It was a very difficult time trying to deal with my own grief and that of my three kids. Andrew was six years old. He was very angry and was acting out. I don’t think he had the words to describe how he was feeling so he showed it by acting out. He was struggling in school and I was at the end of my rope. My sister was a “big sister” many years ago and had a positive experience. I decided to fill out the application. Best decision ever! In January 2013 Matched Since: January 2013 | Andrew was matched to his Big Brother Dave. The changes I have seen in Andrew this past year working with Dave have been amazing. Andrew made honor roll in school, he has made friends, and our relationship is better. Dave and Andrew have a very special friendship. I feel so lucky to have Dave as a Big Brother mentor and friend to Andrew. They get along great and have such a good time together. It was been a very rewarding experience for all. No matter what happens to Andrew, good or bad…Dave is the first person that he wants to call. He loves to tell him about things that have happened to him. There are over 150 children in Erie County waiting to be matched with a big brother or big sister. Like Andrew, many of them just need someone special to make a difference in their life. Please consider joining Big Brothers Big Sisters of Family Services of NW PA. Call 866-4566 today to learn more about becoming a volunteer. Dave is very kind hearted. He makes me feel better if I am sad. We have a lot of fun together. I like doing things with him. - Little Brother Andrew Our Volunteers Change Lives Since joining Big Brothers Big Sisters of Family Services of NW PA: 94% 100% of “littles” improved or maintained academic performance 90% of “littles” improved self-confidence 100% of “littles” avoided delinquency of “bigs” reported satisfaction with Big Brothers Big Sisters Big Brothers Big Sisters of Family Services of NW PA | 814-866-4566 | www.fsnwpa.org/bbbs.php | BIG IMPACT | Page 5 5100 Peach Street Erie, Pennsylvania 16509 Phone: 814-866-4566 Fax: 814-864-2677 Email: paulah@fsnwpa.org www.fsnwpa.org/bbbs.php Supported by: Special thanks to the Big Brothers Big Sisters Advisory Board Rob Majczyk, Chair Erik Perrino, Vice-Chair & Membership Compliance Officer Lesley Ridge, Secretary Lisa Graff, FSNWPA Executive Board Liaison Debbie Batten, Past Chair Scott Beilharz Kara Coleman Cacchione Ozell Freeman Mark Howell Erika Howland Jayashree Ishwar Debbie Proctor David Wachter Nate Wheeler Little to you.
