After a well-deserved dry hot summer, we are ready to enjoy the colours of the Canadian Autumn. The first few leaves are beginning to change colours, and the sky has a different kind of blue. The signature colours are beginning to show everywhere. Following this trend here is, for your enjoyment, the “Fall” issue of Birchmount Bluffs Neighbourhood Centre (BBNC) program guide / brochure. This fall is also full of surprises, as you may remember we informed you that we have submitted a large proposal to reinstate the Youth Employment Program as well the application to become an Anchor Agency with United Way Toronto and York Region. If both initiatives crystallise, BBNC will be a much different organization with much more influence in the outcomes of the community. The challenges that BBNC faces on regular basis are still present. It’s not easy to maintain our low fees when there are not enough subsidies for our participants who struggle in poverty. That is why we are committed to support and strengthening the SHARE365 program This fall our signature event at BBNC is our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is on September 15, 2016, and as in the past few years there is going to be a community BBQ. This year the theme for our AGM is “BBNC’s Poverty Reduction Strategy”. Birchmount Bluffs Neighbourhood Centre has grown tremendously in the last few years and some of our programs and specifically the office, need more space to operate more efficiently. We are discussing options with the city to address these needs. As there is a construction on its way, it is a welcome change the community will enjoy with the brand new full court gymnasium. BBNC is doing everything we can to ensure as few disruptions in services as possible but we do ask for your patience and understanding throughout this process. This year, in addition to our signature event, we will celebrate the fourth Annual “Community Engagement Awards”! As you may be aware, the award recognises a community or small business, a community member and a youth who have contributed to the development and improvement of South West Scarborough. Join us to celebrate! (Nomination Forms are available at Reception) We are going to have an exhibit of our work, the outcome of some of the programs, a community fair, a lot of activities for all ages and of course a lot of food and drinks. Be prepared to face changes and new challenges that ultimately will be beneficial to the community. Although it is a celebration, there is a formal portion within the event that reminds us of the important role our neighbourhood centre plays in the community. That formality is the General Meeting of its members. Each member has the right to elect and be elected to the governance body at BBNC: the board of directors. The membership also has the right to hold the organization accountable. That is why the Auditor is appointed in that meeting when they present a report for the membership to approve minutes and ask questions. As members, you will receive our annual report and our audited financial statements. Thank you. With a new gymnasium and expanded program areas, there will be a greater opportunity for sporting and community activities. City of Toronto, Parks, Forestry and Recreation is doing all that they can to ensure that BBNC programs and services remain as uninterrupted as possible, however the pool will be closed for an approximate 6 week period. We do know for sure that the front doors of the centre will be closed while work inside is being conducted. The side door (just to the west of the main entrance) will become the Temporary Entrance. Members will still have access to the reception area and BBNC will continue to serve the community as best as possible during this time. We will still have access to all of the program rooms and land classes will continue to operate. We may have to shift some rooms for classes but we are still going to be operating at as full capacity as possible. Please have patience with our staff as we try to navigate this construction in order to serve you the best way possible. Thank you for your consideration and understanding. Throughout that span, the youth drop-in has used various engaging mediums to provide a safe space for youth to tackle issues they face. We have tackled issues such as youth unemployment, leadership, mental health, healthy lifestyle choices, healthy living and so much more while using the arts, technology and youth empowerment as tools for dialogue. We have truly empowered young people in the Southwest Scarborough Community by building their skills and capacity to bring change to their community and develop a sense of self. As a new school year begins, there needs to be change. We can no longer be at a drop-in location that is no longer sustainable, but rather work towards breaking down barriers faced by community youth. We will do this by increasing access to youth programming and recreational opportunities that positively engage youth closer to where they live. Although, it is sad to be closing the doors of our Youth Drop-in Centre, there is a silver lining as we move towards a positive youth development model. Our goal is to bring together youth and service providers to provide impactful programming and initiatives through collaboration and skills development. We will continue to have our Youth Unleashed Advisory Council still leading the way to create programs and initiatives that increase access for youth to be positively engaged while breaking down poverty barriers. We will also be more involved in the community through local initiatives led by community animators, the local Neighbourhood Action Partnership and Youth Network that uses collaboration to focus on poverty reduction. A big thank you goes to everyone here at BBNC, our past and current youth leaders and our community partners who have supported our programs and initiatives. We look forward to the continued support in empowering community youth to reach their full potential while breaking down barriers to various supports and resources for a better quality of life. For more information, please contact Kevin Jagmohan - Youth Development Coordinator kevin@bbnc.ca GROWING LEADERSHIP Another summer has come and gone! As seasons change, so did our summer program! This past summer, we have taken our successful traditional Counselor in training program and partnered with Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities' GROW (Gardening to Revitalize Outdoor Wellness) program to become the Growing Leadership program. This program trained 25 youth to become leaders and be involved in their community through community gardening, while engaging their peers and young children through interactive play with weekly neighbourhood games at St. Albert Separate School. This program could not be successful without the partnership of Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities and City of Toronto: Parks, Forestry and Recreation. A huge shout out goes to our summer staff, Kostas, Ramisa and Thakksha, a job well done! 10 contact@bbnc.ca www.bbnc.ca 416 396-4310 YOUTH FITNESS 6 weeks of FREE fitness classes for youth (13 years - 18 years) An active fitness class that will teach you all about learning the fundamentals of physical activity, the importance of it, and how fun exercise really can be!
