ATC Interhouse Athletics Carnival
10 September 2015 I Wet Weather Line 3878 Head of Sport and Activities—Mr Dave Capra Football Season—This weekend will see the end of the traditional football season at ATC. After 8 months of training and games across Football, Rugby and Australian Football it is time to hang up the boots and get into the pool or for many, into the cricket nets or basketball court for summer! In 2015 we fielded 12 football teams, 12 rugby teams and 6 AFL teams, all training twice per week and playing competitive games each weekend. From Jimboomba to Shorncliffe, Coorparoo to Warwick, Wynnum to Toowoomba and just about everywhere in between our boys have chased the Adidas, the Gilbert and the Sherrin. Whilst chasing the round and not so round ball they have found camaraderie and brotherhood. They have experienced success and elation. They have encountered loss and disappointment. They have realised personal excellence. And above all they have found pure boy fun that can only be realised alongside their mates, supported by their parents and guided and challenged by their coaches. The highs and lows of sport is the great stuff. It is real and it shapes our boys (and ourselves) and throws us into situations where our character is tested and we learn lessons about ourselves that shape the way we deal with similar situations into the future. I had a weights coach when I was at school who used to say that when doing bench press it was in the last two centimetres closest to your chest where the magic happens, where the real work began, where pain and sacrifice allowed you to realise genuine gain. Through over 300 games of Football, Australian Football and Rugby this winter we have seen our boys encounter the highs and lows of sport and have time and again have been impressed with the way in which they have conducted themselves. Most pleasing for us has been the common thread of perseverance and resilience that has been demonstrated by many individuals and teams across our three codes. When faced with a tough opponent or a scoreboard that is getting away from them, our boys are digging deep, showing strength of character, standing by their mates and fighting right until the final whistle blows. The results are secondary to the experiences and lessons that football has given our boys (and the staff and parents of ATC) this season. In 2015, we have endured losses; some close, some not so close. We have celebrated some wins; some close, some not so close. Wins and losses are a significant part of sport, however experience and character should always be the key outcome. Well done to all our AFL, Football and Rugby Players, Coaches, Managers and Supporters in 2015. Cricket Season—With summer fast approaching cricket season has generated a huge amount of interest with nearly 50% of our 2016 population registered to play at ATC in the pre-Christmas season in 2015. We are really pleased with this huge interest in the sport and we are looking forward to delivering a quality cricket program to all of our boys. Whilst the season has barely begun, already a huge amount of work has gone into planning and I would to sincerely thank Mr Brett Henschell our ATC Cricket Coordinator for the enthusiasm, energy and meticulous professionalism that he brings to our community and Mrs Helen Davidson for her amazing work as a volunteer to assist our parents with registering our boys and trouble-shooting the many eccentricities of the online-registration process on MyCricket. We will have time to more formally thank Helen in the future, however, in this forum I would like to ATC Interhouse Athletics Carnival extend a huge thanks to her for assisting making this season a possibility. University of QLD Athletics Track At the end of this newsletter edition is a copy of the letter that was sent to the Tuesday 15 September email addresses that parents used to register their sons. If you are interested please email aquatics@atc.qld.edu.au Training has commenced , and is Thursdays at 6.30 am ATC Basketball Coordinator—Mrs Fiona Hannan U13 Div2 Boys The U13 Ambrose Treacy boys came up against the top of the ladder team at Runcorn this week and in a hard fought game went down 21-50. James Ellis and Joa McMahon had solid games handling the ball against an impressive full court press and leading in what was a very good learning experience for the boys after a strong win last week. U15 Div2 Boys The Warriors came up against an incredibly fast skilful team in the Hurricanes on Friday and have never worked at such a pace up and down court. They boys went down 40-15 but showed enormous improvement in press breaker skills and certainly got themselves a workout! Special mention of Josh Lane who lead from the front with strong physical play for the team. U15 Div3 Boys The mighty Div 3 boys were in the lead with less than 30 seconds to play but in an unlucky turn of momentum lost the game 19-20. This leaves the boys third on the ladder and with a difficult game coming up this week to fight for second spot. Beast of luck to all of our basketballers for this weekends fixtures! ATC Aquatics Coordinator—Mr Paul Jones TRIATHLON RACE REVIEW – MORETON BAT TRIATHLON Last week-end saw the ATC Tri Squad compete in the first targeted event for the season, the Triathlon Queensland Sprint Championships at Redcliffe. This was the first chance for the squad to put their training into action at a race and ATC was represented in fine fashion by 12 athletes. Congratulations to Pat Newell, Tom Newell, Joe Newell, Rob Stringer, Will Denney, Luca Galluzzo and Hayden Melrose-Keys, Freddie Ayres, Tate Davidson, Alexander Bradshaw, Oscar Thomson and Oliver Griffiths who represented the college in fine style. Congratulations to Joe Newell who was awarded 2nd place in his category and runner-up 2015-2016 Triathlon Queensland Sprint Distance Champion in the male 10-11 year category. It was great to see all ATC athletes putting the skills they have learnt at training into action. The mass starts we have been doing in the pool ensuring solid swim starts and it was great to see the high leg turnover rates on the bike and run that we have been practicing. The squad showed a great level of race intensity at this event, racing hard and with great personal pride and supporting one another out on the course. A very big thank-you to all the parents and family who supported the squad on the day. ATC AFL Admin and Integrity Officer—Mrs Fiona Kearney Under 12 Div 2 Preliminary FinalWests 3.4-22 ATC 1.3-9 For our Under12 Division 2 Team their season came to an end last Sunday in a preliminary final against Wests. After giving away a few goals early in the first quarter, the boys fought valiantly until the siren. No goals or points for either team in the second and third quarter showed how hard fought the contest was. It was a goal in the fourth quarter that sealed the deal for Wests. The determination and intensity the team showed in the final quarter was a real measure of this team’s commitment to the code of AFL. While it is disappointing to miss the Grand Final, the boys should be very proud of their efforts both on the day and the entire season. Well done to the team and their coaches Chris and Ben for a very successful season. I have every belief that this team can build on their success this year and take it one step further in 2016. “Desire is the key to motivation, but it's determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal - a commitment to excellence - that will enable you to attain the success you seek.” Mario Andretti A final thank you to each and every player in the ATC JAFC, their coaches , managers, associated teachers and all parents for contributing to such a great season in the competition. The boys are earning a reputation for being disciplined footballers who attack the ball hard and never give up. We hope you have enjoyed your experience with AFL at ATC and look forward to sharing some of the season with you at our Awards Breakfast on Sunday October 11 at Chelmer . We will be serving a BBQ breakfast while the boys have a kick of the footy and then present awards for 2015. More details will follow soon. Gregory Terrace Playing Fields, Vivian St, Tennyson
