National VPPPA Conference Lynda Anthony, Vice President of Human Resources, Safety and Environment, and Kelly Olivier, Environ‐
mental Health and Safety Coordinator, represented Anthony Forest Products at the 27th Annual National VPPPA (Voluntary Protection Program Participants’ Association) Conference, “Jazzin’ Up Safety in the Big Easy,” in New Orleans, Louisiana, August 29—September 1. Lynda gave a one‐hour presentation entitled “Safety by Accident Until We Discovered SHARP” in which she detailed how the Company made a dramatic turnaround in its safety culture through its partnership with OSHA and SHARP (Safety Health Achievement Recognition Program) and with the support of its em‐
ployees and management. Lynda began the story with Chapter One, “Before OSHA,” which meant liter‐
ally before OSHA even existed, and she described how she used to play in the sawmill, which her father managed in Louisiana, over fifty years ago. Kelly participated in a panel discussion entitled “OSHA Small Business Resources.” Other members of the panel included Russell Jones, Occupational Health Specialist, U.S. Department of Labor, OSHA, Washing‐
ton, D.C.; Clark Thomas, OSHA Consultation Project Manager, Arkansas Department of Labor, Little Rock, AR; and Quinton Simison, Safety and Environmental Director, BASF of West Memphis, Arkansas, and Chairperson for the AR SHARP/VPP Association. The workshop featured a discussion of OSHA’s small business resources, including print and electronic tools and OSHA’s Onsite Consultation Program, which provides assistance to workers and employers on workplace safety and health requirements. VPP and SHARP are OSHA’s premier partnering and recognition programs for large and small compa‐
nies. Anthony Forest Products is the only company in our industry in the U.S. with multiple sites which are all SHARP certified. Lynda had the opportunity to meet Dr. David Michaels, the Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA, Washington, D.C., at the confer‐
ence. He commented that Anthony Forest has dem‐
onstrated how a company benefits from partnering with OSHA and from implementing a comprehen‐
sive accident prevention program. Anthony Forest Products

HEALTH NEWS
Don’t Get Hurt at Work Daily tasks can lead to devastating injuries As printed in AARP The Magazine Older workers are the fastest‐growing segment of employed population—and now they’re also injured more often. U.S. postal employee Jerome Garrett, then 51, broke his neck (and later had a massive seizure) when a 70‐pound box fell on his head from a conveyor belt. Two years later the Decatur, Georgia, resident lives with a brain injury and constant pain. Garrett’s story is extreme but hardly unusual. Workers 55‐plus made up 17 percent of nonfa‐
tal injuries on the job in 2009—up from 12 percent in 2003—according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Most suffered “acute traumatic inju‐
ries” such as fractures and sprains. And when older workers get hurt, they face added hur‐
dles: “It takes them longer to return to work once they recover, and their injuries are more severe,” says Dawn Castillo of the CDC’s National Institute for Occu‐
pational Safety and Health. So is your workplace a hazard? Watch for problems such as unse‐
cured cords and objects, Castillo says. Clean up spills, and wear sturdy shoes and other appropriate attire. If you have vision trouble (which can lead to tripping), talk to your doctor. And report safety issues to your employer. 2011 Influenza Vaccine As printed in Script Care The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) rec‐
ommends a yearly flu vaccination as the first and most im‐
portant step in protecting against flu viruses. The CDC is now recommending that everyone age 6 months and over get a flu shot. By getting a flu shot, people are not only protecting themselves, they are protecting family, friends, and everyone around them. This season’s flu vaccine will also protect against the H1N1 virus.
