Old dog, new career: Therapy Dog

Bonnie is a Thunder-quality dog.
It’s a bit of a surprise, though. Although she is a triple-national-champion GSD in her native Europe (2005: Croatia, Serbia-Montenegro, and
Bulgaria) and a titled Schutzhund
(“protection dog,” a popular sport
in both Europe and North America),
Bonnie has had a hard life and
seems to have been abused. Training methods in eastern Europe tend
to be what I call harsh.
When Bonnie came to us last
spring upon her retirement, life in
the breeding kennel and competition field and ring was all she knew.

Our seven-year-old German shepherd dog (GSD) Bonnie is not an intuitive choice for the role of Therapy Dog, but we think she will excel at
the job.
On the main page of the website of Therapy Dogs of Vermont
(www.therapydogs.org), it says its therapy teams
are “four legged volunteers and their handlers who
work on the emotional health of hospital patients,
students in educational institutions, and residents
of nursing/retirement homes and correctional facilities.”
When I was a child, my family adopted Thunder, a GSD of mature and
dignified years. He was perfectly trained – we kids could not break that
training; we tried! – our faithful companion and guardian for too few years.
Thunder saved me once when, 11 years old, I foolishly interfered in a
mostly-noise fight between Thunder and a boxer. The boxer went for me,
and that’s when Thunder got serious. He saved me from a mauling or
worse. For anyone in my family to say a dog is “Thunder-quality” is both

From wrestler to rescuer, this Vermonter loves animals
Fundraisers help to encourage adoptions. Additionally, SOS promotes
animals available for adoption through a “Pet of the Week” feature on
local TV station WCAX. Available dogs and cats are posted on both the
station’s website and the SOS website. “Those outlets have been great
advertisement for us,” Haynes says.
Since its beginning, SOS has saved nearly 2000 animals, rescuing
about 125 dogs and cats a year. The SOS animal shelter sits on one and
a half acres at the Haynes’ house. The dogs are housedogs, although
kennels and crates can be found indoors and out. A fenced backyard is
divided into sections, enabling dogs to be grouped according to size for
exercise. A 16-by-30-foot addition with a screened outdoor area and
access to the indoors was build onto the garage for the cats.

that she adopted it as the
motto for her rescue organization.
A former professional
wrestler known as The
Adjuster, Haynes’ life
changed when she spotted
a stray dog on the way to
a wrestling match in Ft.
Lauderdale, FL. The unsightly German shepherd
dog had lost much of his
coat and carried a scant 40
pounds on his large frame.
Though she had three rescued dogs of her own at home, Haynes stopped and coaxed the dog into
her car.
Later, she called dozens of animal welfare agencies, yet no one offered to help. She took “Shep” to her veterinarian who determined the
scrappy dog was malnourished and ridden with fleas, tapeworms, and
sarcoptic mange. The veterinarian recommended euthanasia, but Haynes
couldn’t let Shep go without a fight. She took the dog home, giving him
home-cooked food, flea dips, and medication. Eventually, Haynes brought
the dog back to health and found him a permanent home.
“It was truly a rags-to-riches story,” Haynes says of the dog now named
“Alf.” The experience motivated Haynes and her husband Roy to move
from Florida to rural Vermont and start a rescue operation so they could
provide care to homeless animals.
Providing a Safe Haven
Haynes founded SOS in 1996 as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) operation. Along
with her husband and several volunteers, Haynes rescues both dogs and
cats. The organization takes animals from shelters as well as pets that
owners surrender. Veterinary care is provided and animals stay at the
Haynes’ house until the right adopter is found.
Despite other commitments such as volunteering at the local Agency
On Aging, Haynes’ main focus is the shelter. Her husband is self-employed. “We need a flexible schedule to keep up with the animals’ needs,”
Haynes says.

“We want the animals to live as they would with a family and to
become socialized if they are not already,” Haynes says. “Then we are
better able to assess their personalities.” Animals are matched with
adopters according to their energy levels and health needs.
SOS screens potential adopters through background checks and veterinary references. The organization finds out if adopters have spayed
and neutered their pets in the past, and if they live in a pet-friendly
home.
No matter the distance, SOS refuses to ship animals. “Everyone has
to actually come and visit the dog or cat they are interested in,” Haynes
says. “Plus, we require our animals to meet all family members or other
animals in the household before an adoption can take place.”

A Woman on a Mission
Haynes is always seeking
opportunities to rescue animals and find homes for
them, which prompted her to apply to become a Purina Pro Plan Rally
to Rescue Ambassador. “I thought the Rally to Rescue program would
be a good way to draw attention to our cause,” she says. “The Rally to
Rescue tent and the collar and wristband sets that came in the event kit
have helped to get more people interested. They have been a valuable
asset to a small group like ours.”
Haynes’ goal is not only to find homes for rescued animals, but also
to show people the importance of caring for animals. An orange
longhaired cat named Mo is a good example of the need for animal
education. A stray living at a local culinary school, Mo was the victim of

Funded strictly from donations, SOS depends on contributions from
local businesses and adopters. The Haynes make up the difference if
SOS runs short on funds. Contributions come in from fundraisers and
from people who receive SOS’s free quarterly newsletter, The Pet Gazette. Adoption events at pet stores also spur donations.

animal abuse when students poured scalding molasses on his back and
down his throat. It took five grueling months before Haynes nursed Mo
back to health.
“Through all of his pain, Mo was still patient and kind,” Haynes
says.
However, when people came to adopt Mo, he would run and hide.
When Haynes decided that Mo should live permanently at her home, he
lost his fear of visitors and became the “resident cat director.” Mo, who
recently died at age 12 of congestive heart failure, would greet visitors
at the door and help new arrivals adapt, playing with them until they
got used to him and other animals.
Among her goals, Haynes aims to educate Vermont residents about
the importance of spaying and neutering pets. She works to promote the
Vermont Spay-Neuter Incentive Program (VSNIP), a state service that
provides $10 spays or neuters for low-income residents. “Many people
have the misconception that animals should have their first litter before
doing so,” she says.
In recognition of her work in pet rescue, particularly to educate the
public about responsible pet care, the United Way of Chittenden County
honored Haynes last spring with its Hometown Hero Volunteer of the
Month Award.
”We get so much back from the animals,” Haynes says. “They appreciate what we do for them. It’s so great to see how happy they become
and how much they can change with just a little help.”

not for killing. Yes, you can negotiate a steep bank with fallen trees and
boulders and brush, down to the Browns River. Yes, you can play in the
water.
No, we are not going to punish you. It’s okay if you don’t understand
something right away, we are not going to punish you.
It took Bonnie months to get comfortable with that, and to come down
from high-strung and nervous to content and comfortable. We’ve even
succeeded – finally – in putting weight on her so she doesn’t look emaciated, each rib and vertebra distinctly visible. And she has accepted living
with cats.
This new, relaxed Bonnie with the happy-dog expression has such a
gentle and soothing nature that she attracts, and accepts, attention from a
wide variety of people everywhere she goes, from Harvest Market to Home
Depot. She has never shown the least aggression to any person or dog, and
is calm and grave while being petted by adults or smooched by children.
About a month ago, we brought Bonnie to visit my mom. My mother,
81, has Alzheimer’s and, after a second major operation for lung cancer, is
in a nursing home in Massachusetts. It’s a great facility but it is still an
institution where, with her very diminished cognitive faculties, she has
had to cope with being told she’s ill (she doesn’t remember her illness or
operations), being restricted in her activities, and losing her option and
ability to make decisions for herself. Several years into the spiral of
Alzheimer’s, she retains her formidable social skills and ability to connect with people.
In the nursing home, Mom has met a woman I’ll call Mary, who looks
to be around 60. Mary is wheelchair-bound, has a very flat affect, seems
very closed and withdrawn, and just about never speaks. Mom took this
as a challenge, and by constant attention has gotten the odd word from her
here and there: Mary’s name, “yes,” “no.”
A few visits back, Mom brought me over and introduced me to Mary.
“This is my daughter from Vermont.” No reaction. “She lives in a log
cabin.” Nothing. “She has three dogs.” Wait – Mary’s expression changed:
a slight widening of the eyes, a quick glance at me.
“Yes,” I said, “I have three dogs. Do you like dogs?” A slight smile, a
slight raising of eyes. “My dogs are big dogs. Do you like big dogs?” A
slight frown, a downward glance. “Okay, no. Do you like small dogs?”
The slight smile, the lilt of the eyes, and a quiet whisper: “Yes.” Further
conversation, rather one-sided, revealed that Mary likes dogs, small dogs:
small brown poodles. Mary spoke several words to me and showed interest, a marked difference to her normal expressionless silence.
So when I was able to bring Bonnie down to see her in the nursing
home, Mom and I took Bonnie to meet Mary. Mary seemed enchanted
and, for her, demonstrative and vocal.

“She’s beautiful,” Mary kept breathing in her low voice. “Would you
like to pat her?” I asked. “Yes,” but she would not reach out herself. I
moved Bonnie very close to Mary’s right hand and gently took it in mine
and guided it to Bonnie’s head, though her elbow refused to budge from
the arm rest. Mary stroked Bonnie softly and looked enraptured.
I told Mary a little of Bonnie’s history: she’s had six litters of puppies,
she’s a champion in the show ring and competition field. I showed her
Bonnie’s teeth that were broken by a rough trainer; Mary’s eyes narrowed
and she frowned. “Yes, that’s exactly how I feel about it, too,” I told Mary.
By the end of our half-hour visit, Mary was independently reaching out
to pat Bonnie, stretching her arm to do it. Mary’s expression had softened
and opened, and she had spoken several entire sentences of four to five
words.
This is what a therapy dog is supposed to do, I think. Mom loved the
several hours she spent patting Bonnie, talking to her, looking into her
deep eyes. And Mary was transformed.
So we contacted Therapy Dogs of Vermont to find out more about getting Bonnie, and ourselves as her handlers, certified for this new career.
More specific qualifications for therapy dogs include that they be at
least a year old, “obedience trained and responsive to basic commands,”
and have a stable, tolerant temperament, non-aggressive toward people or
other dogs. Bonnie seems to meet all these criteria, and is scheduled for
evaluation in February.
Meanwhile, I’ll bring Bonnie to visit my mom, and Mary, as often as I
can.
Update, June 2008: Bonnie is now a certified Therapy Dog and visits
the nursing home regularly.

control
Rabies is a fatal viral disease
found mainly in wildlife (especially raccoons, foxes, bats,
skunks, and woodchucks) but
can infect domestic animals
and humans. Hundreds of cases of animal rabies have been reported
throughout Vermont since 1992 and the outbreak will continue to be a
problem for many years.
No one can tell if an animal has rabies by looking at it. Rabid animals may seem normal or can be lethargic or aggressive. Usually there
is a change in normal behavior. Any animal wounded by a wild animal
not available for testing must be regarded as having been exposed to
rabies. Rabies is mainly transmitted by a bite. Rare non-bite exposures
can occur if wet infectious saliva or nervous tissue contacts a fresh open
wound or the eyes, nose, or mouth. Rabies virus is not found in blood,
urine, feces, or skunk spray.
Avoid wildlife, vaccinate domestic pets and livestock (check with your
veterinarian every year), and know who in your community (town health
officer or other local official or neighbor) will help you with an animal
problem. If you think you have found orphaned wildlife, don’t touch them,
call your animal control officer or a game warden for help. Game wardens
can be reached by calling the Vermont State Police. If you are bitten by an
animal, wash the wound immediately and call your doctor.
Bats are an important part of our ecosystem but should be appreciated at a distance. Bats are increasingly implicated in human rabies
cases. A bat found in a room with a sleeping individual or an unattended child, or a bat that has made physical contact with an individual,
should be tested for rabies.
A booster should be considered for a currently vaccinated domestic
pet with wounds of unknown origin, whereas an unvaccinated domestic
pet should be immediately vaccinated and kept under the owner’s control and observation for six months (additional boosters at three and
eight weeks should be considered in high risk situations). Log rabies
conversations with owners on the animal’s record.
The local health officer shall cause an apparent healthy domestic
animal that bites an individual, regardless of vaccination status, to be
confined and observed for ten days for signs of illness, usually at a
responsible owner’s residence.
The VT Department of Health (VDH) is responsible for the prevention of rabies in humans and for the management of animals that may
have exposed humans. The VDH assesses human and animal rabies
exposure, coordinates rabies specimen testing and provides vaccination
guidelines.

VSNIP subsidizes spay/neuter cost
The VSNIP (Vermont Spay Neuter Incentive Program) program, funded by a yearly $2 charge to dog licensing fees, enables income-eligible owners of cats and dogs to receive financial assistance to have their animals neutered and vaccinated.
The costs for shots and surgery are reduced at participating veterinary offices, and the fees are paid to the vets by the fund.
Owners are responsible for a $10 co-payment for each animal.
VSNIP is administered by VT Volunteer Services for Animals
Humane Society.
To receive applications for assistance, send a self addressed,
stamped .59-cent envelope (SASE) to VSNIP, P.O. Box 100,
Bridgewater, VT 05034 for each animal. For information including a list of participating veterinarians, go online to:
