MANAGERS’ MESSAGES
A Minute With Mark
Mark Stevens
General Manager
The Houstonian Club
With a new year comes new routines,
sports and activities for kids and work
responsibilities. With our busy schedules
it is often hard to make time for our
exercise program. Typically the first thing
we give up is the so called “free time” for
our own personal health and well being.
Seeing our fitness goals through the year
takes hard work, commitment and a
customized plan that works. Boredom,
improper use of equipment or lack of
results can hinder our progress and make
it easier to give up. Consider the following recommendations in your daily workout
routine to help you stick to your program for the entire year:
·
·
·
·
·
Always warm up before your activity. Ten minutes at a moderate pace on a piece of cardio equipment before beginning your main workout will increase your blood flow and core temperature, lubricate your joints and prevent injuries.
Drink lots of water! Drinking water not only helps keep you
properly hydrated but also helps your metabolism and flushes
out toxins.
When using exercise equipment or free weights, use the correct amount of weights. Men tend to use too much and women use
too little weight when training. Work with a member of our
staff to get your proper weights identified.
Stretch more. Stretch after aerobic activity and between sets
in the weight room.
Cool down after your workout. We recommend a few minutes
of light activity followed by stretching exercises for the total body. In addition to assisting you with your fitness goals, we would also
like to announce a few developments that will have a positive
impact on The Club this year.
We have recently revised the Member Advisory Board. This group,
selected from each segment and demographic of our membership,
will serve as a valuable resource in helping us understand requests
and expectations of our overall membership. After serving a two
year period, Board Members will nominate candidates to serve as
new members of the group. This is a voluntary group that is very
active and passionate about the overall success and direction of
The Houstonian Club and we look forward to working with
each of them. Members of the 2006-2007 Advisory Board:
Michael Abdouch, Mary Bass, Norton Berlin, Anne Carl,
Les Gourwitz, Harvard Hill, Wini Lipsey, Tiffani Miller,
Preston Moore, Tammy Morris, Carol Sawyer, Tami Stomberg
& Laura Ward
We have also made significant changes to the facilities in recent
months. Most notable is the reorganization of the Fitness Center.
This is the first phase of several improvements that we anticipate
in this area. We are currently looking at Olympic platforms, plate
loaded equipment and the most advanced cardio equipment in the
industry. We have also added XM Radio for the free weight area
to provide upbeat, energetic and commercial free music during
your workouts. Our plans also include improvements in the Youth Gym and
The Bungalow including a new identification system and
check-in/out controls for those areas. In addition, the basketball
court will receive a new skylight and a new resurfaced floor in
coming months. These changes should bring improved
satisfaction and enjoyment of our Club facilities. Thank you for being a member of The Houstonian Club
and we look forward to serving you throughout the year!

Spring is certainly in the air! Our property
has never looked better, thanks to the hard
work of our grounds manager, Paula
Egger. She and her team have labored all
winter to give us a great spring show of
color. If your workouts include outdoor
activities, I suggest a stroll through the
grounds as you cool down. Take a moment
to enjoy the azaleas in bloom and the
plantings that are beginning to put out
new growth. And because all Houstonians love to get
out and enjoy the beautiful spring weather,
the Gazebo is now open weekends until
daily service begins in May. It is the perfect spot to hang out! I hope
you’ll have the opportunity to visit the pools soon and try some of
the new menu selections created by Executive Chef Jeff Everts and
the culinary team. In fact, they have been busy developing new ideas
for several locations including new menus in Olivette, Room Service
and the Bar. I suggest sampling the new bar appetizer menu on a
Thursday evening to give our trio a listen. We have been attracting
a regular crowd to enjoy the conversation-friendly entertainment.
Our longtime bartenders Jaime and Alex are ready to take care of
you and your guests.

ANCHORED
AQUATIC CIRCUIT
TRAINING
Thursdays
9:30 - 10:30 am
Anchored Aquatic Circuit Training is cardiovascular
intervals with resistance circuit utilization. Build your
endurance and increase your muscular strength in this
intensifying one-hour aquatic workout in the deep and
shallow waters of the Garden Pool. This workout is for
all fitness levels and uses various aquatic equipment.
Come give this new class a try! For more information,
call the Aquatics Department at 713.685.6751.
As the warmer months approach, and everyone starts
thinking about exercising in the pools, I hope these
guidelines are helpful.
Expect to share a lane with one or more other
swimmers. There are some quiet times, but if you
are trying to lap swim at popular times, you must be
willing to share with up to three other swimmers.
There is a Lap Lane use schedule available that will tell
you by day and hour when the pool will be busy.
Water Fitness
January Luncheon
Never just jump in a lane and begin swimming down
the pool, as it may cause accidents and/or it might
surprise the other swimmer. 1 To share a lane with one person, stop them and communicate that you want to share a lane and determine how you will divide the lane (Split the
lane or swim a circle pattern (around the black line
in a counter clock-wise pattern).
2 To join a lane with two people already in it (who
swim at your pace), communicate that you want
to join them and swim the circle pattern.
3 Be cooperative and be willing to move to different
lanes if staff requests it. They are usually trying to
help align you with people of similar skill levels and
speed, or they may be needing to clear lanes for
a scheduled program.
The Houstonian provides loaner kickboards, pull
buoys, flippers and aquajoggers out at the Pool House.
Goggles, swim caps, swimsuits, hats and sun-care
products are available at The Houstonian Sports Shop.
If you would like to improve your swimming
technique and you are a beginner, join the Adult
Beginner Classes that will meet Mondays and

Resolution Shape-Up Program
Motivates 70-lb Weight Loss
At first, it’s unexpected and unnoticeable, a gain of a pound here,
another pound there. Next time you get on the scales, you see it’s
not just one pound but 10…or 20…or 30…
That’s how it was for 49-year-old Susan Dahl. After living and
working overseas for more than 20 years, Dahl came back to the
States and Texas on a leave of absence for a break from the unrest in
the Middle East. She had spent the last five years working for a large
oil company in a highly stressful and demanding desk job, and with
a busy family life, she had little free time for exercise. When she
stepped off the plane in Houston, she was 70 pounds overweight
and ready for a change.
“I knew I had to do something – for the last 10 years I more or less
forgot about me,” explained Dahl. “I was not only unhappy with my
appearance, but mostly I was dissatisfied with my low energy level.”
Once she got settled, she decided that she was going to focus on
herself for a change and started watching what she ate and exercised
more. It didn’t take long before Dahl started to lose weight, which
motivated her to keep at it, but after losing 30 pounds she hit a
plateau and didn’t know how to jumpstart her remaining weight loss.
That’s when she heard about “The Resolution Shape-Up Program”
through The Club. “This program is truly amazing!” Dahl
exclaimed. “I couldn’t have done it without them.”
With the help of Catherine, a registered dietitian and three trainers,
Ronnie, Leslie and Patrick, Dahl learned that it would take a
combination of proper nutrition, cardio exercises, free weights and
dedication to help her achieve her goal. Put on a 1800 calorie/day
diet, Dahl was amazed at how much food that really equaled and was
never hungry. One of the best parts of the diet for her was the
grocery store tour with the dietitian where she learned about all the
great tasty and healthy food that was available if you knew what you
were looking for. “Sticking to the diet wasn’t difficult but it did
require a lot of thought to ensure you were getting the proper
nutrients and eating healthy while keeping within your daily limit,”
said Dahl.
Exercise became a very important part of Dahl’s daily routine.
“There were days I wanted to disown the trainers but I realized that
you can’t achieve your weight loss goals by doing one (eating
healthy) without the other,” she said. Dahl worked out six times a
week and remembers her trainers admonishing her to not waste
valuable time when she could be working on her body. “They’d tell
me that when a commercial comes on TV to get on the floor and do
my bridges or crunches,” she said, laughing. Dahl said that tip is
especially important when she travels, which she does quite often to
visit her son in boarding school in Washington and family in New
York and overseas. “Once you have the knowledge, you put it to use,
whether it’s working out in your hotel room or eating at a restaurant,” explained Dahl. “It’s not a big deal for me anymore because I
know what to do and I am motivated to stick with strategies outlined
in the program.”
Dahl can’t speak highly enough about the Resolution Shape-Up
Program or the team who worked with her. She said that everyone’s
positive attitude and their caring approach made achieving her goal
so much easier. “They wouldn’t let you give up or get down on
yourself if you cheated one day. They just gave you more
encouragement and told you to move on,” she said. Seeing the
results of her fitness assessments every six to eight weeks also
served to motivate her.
