Performing at the Top Welcome to our second Toowoomba Auction of the Future Stars. Our first auction last year in Toowoomba was encouraging and so here we go again. Auction of the Stars has had a great year, unexpected considering our Victorian auction was just after the bushfires and the economic climate was historically bad all year. Nevertheless we have experienced record sales, both in prices and in clearance percentages. Certainly everybody agrees that all these so called bad times are temporary and a brighter future is inevitable. For the future to be exciting, people need to plan now and activate strategies that will positively influence destiny. Nearly every serious Grand Prix dressage rider in Australia has invested in a youngster carrying the bloodlines offered for sale in this auction. The horses offered are specifically bred to win at Grand Prix level. This is unexpectedly hugely at odds with breeding young stock to win young dressage horse classes and also hugely at odds with young stock bred to win high prices in auctions or as babies. We promote the statistic that only 6% of horses are capable of doing Grand Prix, where 90% of horses are capable of Prix St Georges. The pathway to Prix St Georges is about five years of TLC plus somebody’s life. Traditionally the riders blame themselves for the horse not stepping out right at the top in the Big Tour (Grand Prix and Inter II) and so they are left with an FEI schoolmaster (Prix St Georges and Inter I) that originally was supposed to be the ticket to their childhood dreams and possible Olympic selection and the ultimate of riding for your country. Grand Prix horses are those that have a full vocabulary including one-time changes, piaffe and passage. Most horses just do not have a full vocabulary and that is a fact, as opposed to not receiving correct training. Australia is a great place to see this phenomena illustrated when you consider those that actually do make up the Grand Prix competitor population. In our Australian Grand Prix population, there are seven or eight riders who are full blown professionals and really know their way into that field of endeavor. At Nationals or the big CDI dressage shows, Australia now fields some 30 starters. Really terrific. Most of those riders are startled to be there and have had very inauspicious beginnings – they are just ordinary riding club members who were not particularly competitive or outstandingly talented. They just attended the dressage clinics like everyone else in the club and initially did nothing more, Performing at the Top nothing less than the other club members. The horse they rode looked, at first glance, no different to anyone else’s horse. Unremarkable is probably the word. There was a difference, however. This unremarkable horse through some twist of fate (probably genetic) embraced the idea of training, of committing to a partnership and also inexplicably (again probably genetic) had a full vocabulary of Grand Prix moves just waiting to be developed. So at a little local clinic with a visiting instructor this combination improved in an encouraging way. This encouragement prompts the riders to do a bit more of this dressage work during the week and again the horse embraces the work in an encouraging way. Before long, the rider is hooked and an enthusiast who goes to every clinic and works at riding after work each day. Guess what! So arrives another Australian Grand Prix rider. Of course the rider has had to work hard but the inspiration and the “can do” attitude is provided by the horse. These horses are born and can come from any denomination breed, colour or size. A good horse is a good horse! Sometimes they are freaks but most often they come from parents that also had these talents. Most of the parents until recently in Australia remain pretty well undiscovered. Freaks do exist but if a rider goes looking for a freak we feel sorry for them. Remember it is also possible to win the lottery but if a person stakes their whole life on winning the lottery then that person is termed a loser! Same thing if a rider stakes their life on finding a freak horse! These special competition qualities are hereditary and this is our specialty at Auction of the Stars. We specialise in producing horses in that 6% Grand Prix bracket. These individuals on offer are performance bred from some of the best Olympic bloodlines in the world. There are lots and lots of bloodlines out there, but if you study the Olympics there are only a few bloodlines that keep reappearing at the top. Most of them can be found in Auction of the Stars! We wish everyone the very best of luck and remind you that it is beyond debate - if you buy from us, your chances of performing remarkably are hugely increased. All the best, Heath Ryan and Ann-Maree Lourey Fiji R LOT STANDING AT RYANS, HEATHERBRAE, NSW A Pic by Peter Stoop Dark brown stallion, mat 16.2hh 2004 Fiji was bought as a foal by Rozzie Ryan in 2004, from the start a spectacular-looking youngster with fancy paces and an exceptionally amenable temperament. He is one of the very few horses in Australia by Florencio, who was twice World Young Dressage Horse Champion, as a 5yo and again as 6yo with Hans Peter Minderhoud, both times scoring 10 for his canter. Florencio is by Florestan I who is having significant success as a sire of world-class dressage horses such as Floresco (Patrik Kittel, Beijing Olympics 2008); Floriano (Steffan Peters, Aachen WEG 2006); Fidermark, now deceased (Grand Prix with Dutch rider Marlies van Baalen); and Ferrara (Prix St Georges with Isabell Werth before injury). Florencio is out of Walessa, by Weltmeyer out of a Pik Bube mare. Weltmeyer is sire of Warum Nicht (Isabell Werth, international Grand Prix) while Pik Bube I (full brother to Pik Bube II) was professional German Grand Prix Champion (Herbert Rehbein). Fiji is out of Hawaii, by Harvard. Harvard is a sire of the future, by Hohenstein, one of the most outstanding Trakehner sires. On Hawaii’s bottom line is Hill Hawk (TB) responsible for the dam line of all the Welt Hit stallions, successful in the dressage arena. Fiji is already winning at novice with Breanna Tillitzki in the saddle. Service fee $3000 + GST. He is a legend! He is famous for a quote from Olympian Kyra Kyrkland, who said: “I would give my soul for this horse.” On the dam line, Byalee Briar is out of a Bernstein mare. Bernstein is a Swedish warmblood stallion, sire of many approved stallions, again with a pedigree that has proved itself in the ranks of Grand Prix in Europe and the US. Bernstein also sired Madonna, the winner of the national Swedish finals for four-year-olds, and won the Breeders’ Trophy for 5- and 6-year olds. He was himself stallion of the year in dressage in Sweden in 2001. Together these bloodlines have now produced what we expect to be one of the most exciting young stallions to be brought into Australia. He has inherited Briar’s incredible uphill canter with strong shoulder and knee action, and shows that ever-essential correct walk. Byalee Briar is already winning annual championships at preliminary level and his babies are friendly with great conformation and amazing movement. Byalee is thrilled to be able to offer these wonderful bloodlines live in the Southern Hemisphere. As a bonus, Byalee Briar is a palomino, with the colour dating back eight generations of Swedish warmbloods. Since arriving in 2005, Metallic’s performance has grown from strength to strength and he began PSG as a 6yo. We are expecting him to do Grand Prix within a year because everything comes so easy to this super-talented stallion. Metallic is an awesome mover with a powerful, elevated and cadenced trot. He has a front leg with rare knee action, plus an extreme active and powerful hindleg. The canter is just out of this world, so huge and big off the ground and again that wonderful front leg! The walk has a very big overtrack and again is just super impressive. Genetically, Metallic is performance bred by Metall, by the Dutch black pearl in breeding, Olympic Ferro, three-time team silver winner including at the Sydney Olympics. Metall’s dam is by the legendary G Ramiro who bred not only jumpers but also international dressage horses. It is interesting to note is that in 2005 Metall was represented by 17 offspring in the second round of the Dutch Dressage Championship for young horses, the Pavo Cup. AEA Metallic’s dam is by Gabor who was approved in 1991 with scores of 8 and 9. He has won almost every PSG and Inter I dressage championship in the country. He is now totally focused on the leap from Small Tour (PSG/ Inter I) to Big Tour (Inter II and Grand Prix). Of all the Small Tour horses in the world, very, very few of them can make that jump. We suggest perhaps not more than six in every hundred, or 6%. In most cases, the stumbling block is piaffe/passage and we are pleased that Jive Magic has absolutely amazing piaffe/passage! His first GP start is planned in the first half of 2009 and it will be a very auspicious occasion. Meanwhile, Jive has developed into one of the most exciting sires perhaps ever in terms of young dressage horses. Karingal Anastasia is by Jive Magic (bred by Karen Waterman, owned by Sharna Glover) and at the Australian National Dressage Championships with Tor Van der Berg won not only Australian Elementary Champion, but also Medium Champion! In the USA, Jive Magic’s very first foal ever, Jeff the Chef, is creating huge interest. Ridden by Silva Martin he is the American Advanced Dressage Champion 08/09. There are many other exciting Jive Magics out there sought after by the top dressage riders in the country. Jive performs on Saturday evening, March 7, with a quick demo while selling service fees on Sunday the 8th of March. These service fees are unreserved and so are invariably somewhat cheaper than what one would pay on farm and a great way to get involved. Normally Jive’s service fee is $3,500.00 +GST. Already, from limited outings, Romance is following in his father’s footsteps with official preliminary championships and scores of up to 78%, as well as his first Horse of the Year title. Mixed with Romance’s outstanding Rubinstein and Donnerhall pedigree is Lanthan (dec), a black 16.2hh stallion (German, imp). Lanthan sires beautiful, elegant, modern warmbloods renowned for their temperaments and talent in both dressage and show jumping. Romance marks the dawning of a new age in dressage. He has an even, regular walk. The trot has Grand Prix written all over it. It has a wonderful regularity and a soft and strong swing through the back that makes him a delight to ride – indicating that, like his dad, he is going to have international standard piaffe and passage. The canter right from the day he was born had magical talent – what would be collected for any other horse is something Romance can do on a loose rein, with great expression. He has a natural suppleness and flexibility. Mentally, Romance is very stable, very aware and a great thinker, able to receive sophisticated information and react without stress. Romance is a beautiful and obviously upstanding individual – and incredibly exciting. Available live or chilled (LFG). Frozen semen by arrangement. AEA Tuschinski is named after his sire Tuschinski, outstanding son of the world-famous dressage stallion Krack C. Krack C is a gorgeous GP stallion ridden to huge international success by three-time Olympic gold-medal winner Anky van Grunsven. Tuschinski is considered by many to be the best dressage progenitor in Europe. His foal report showed in an outstanding way that he passes his flexibility, suppleness and presence on to his offspring, that they showed extra special self-carriage and a good hindleg technique. AEA Tuschinski’s dam is Paronia B out of the unbeaten stallion Gribaldi. Gribaldi (Keur stallion) was 1995 champion of stallion selections and 1996 champion in his stallion performance test. Gribaldi was the winner of the 4yo stallion competition (1997) and reserve champion in the Pavo-Cup (4yo dressage horses). AEA Tuschinski’s breeding is clearly phenomenal. His movement in all three paces is simply astonishing - supple and elastic with a super-active hindleg and that expressive ‘knee’ action in front as you would expect from an AEA Burong stallion. Rainmaker R has movement that defies gravity and just dances through the air. Regardez Moi is the Australian Grand Prix Champion just back from the World Cup Final in Las Vegas where just the top 15 combinations in the world went head to head. Misty Morning is by Richmeed Medallion (dec), himself a Grand Prix dressage horse by Danish stallion May Sherif. May Sherif to this day is the only stallion to sire two World Cup winners in Andiamo, also a gold medallist with Sven Rothenberger and Matador with Kyra Kirklund, also an Olympic medallist. Desert Gold is by Dutch Gold, Olympic mount with Jennie Loriston-Clarke, and Dutch Gold is by Dutch Courage, 6th at the substitute Moscow Olympics, again with Jennie Loriston-Clarke. All of that, plus the fact that Kenare Snowshoes is by Salute, also the sire of Victory Salute ridden by Brett Parbery, makes Rainmaker R a dazzling array of dressage genetics. But stop, there’s more! Rainmaker R is in foal to Fiji R, the Ryan’s next young stallion dressage protégé. He is by the World Champion 5and 6-year-old Young Dressage Horse Champion, Florencio. Harry is out of the stunning little mare Kalimna Wyld Rose, an eye-catching mover and picture-perfect mare whose first foal sold to a New Zealand buyer. She is by the stallion Wyndermere, who was licensed in Germany and is the only imported son of Wolkenstein II, by far Weltmeyer’s best son. Wyndermere’s dam, Angelique, produced two other licensed sons including Woiwode, at stud in the UK. Rosie is out of Encore, whose dam was a Grand Prix dressage horse with Paula Price. Regardez Moi is just back in the country having represented Australia at the World Cup Final in Las Vegas, USA. This is pretty amazing when you consider that Northern Charisma, the grand-dam of Rubio R, was also the Australian Grand Prix Dressage Champion ridden by Rachael Sanna and in 1999 also represented Australia at the World Cup Final, in Dortmund, Germany. How amazing is that! Just to add a little more to the picture, Ella is by Jazz, and Jazz has just become the number one dressage sire in the world today. Jazz himself represented Holland as an international Grand Prix horse at the 2002 WEG in Spain. Rubio R would have to be a serious consideration to be kept entire and not only be a freak dressage horse, but also a freak dressage sire, especially considering his outstanding collection of genetics. Romeo is a very comfortable ride for young and old. Romeo’s dam, by Grand Prix stallion Richmeed Medallion (dec), has produced other offspring that excel in dressage including Lucien (stallion) and Landers Gem. It is expected that Romeo will follow suit, especially when you consider that his dam, Missouri, is in fact a half sister to HP Finagin, top Australian Grand Prix dressage horse sold for $440,000 at the peak of his career. Romeo is already broken in and has competed with Byron Cann, showing excellent behaviour, before being turned out to mature. He is offered here ready to continue with his ridden career. Certainly at first glance his paces make you think this is a wonderful dressage youngster and being by Jive Magic, who is winning at Grand Prix test, this would have to be a very serious consideration. Don Ramiro goes back to Don Primero who was ridden by Karen Rehbein at Grand Prix and who in turn was by the great Olympic gold medallist Donnerhall, again with Karen Rehbein. Donnerhall can be found on the dam line of Regardez Moi as well so Ragamuffin is carrying a double cross of the great Donnerhall. Jive Magic is already winning at Grand Prix with Rozzie Ryan and this combination of Grand Prix bloodlines, which includes Regardez Moi, Jive Magic, Donnerhall and Snowshoes being by Salute (Salute is also the sire of Victory Salute ridden by Brett Parbery who has just set an Australian Grand Prix international dressage percentage record of 70.34%) makes for perhaps one of the best bred dressage fillies in Australia today. This is something seriously special. Of course the Ryans have retained an older full sister and this is the only reason Ragamuffin R is available. His sire, sunny Boy, already has 15 licensed sons in Germany. Scout has inherited his sire’s outstanding gaits and therefore would suit the most ambitious dressage rider/breeder. This is Lana’s first foal. Lana’s full sister, Lander’s Gem, has just begun her dressage career with consistent scores of 70%+. On the dam line, Lana is out of HP Missouri, who is in fact a half-sister to HP Finagin, a top Australian Grand Prix dressage horse sold for $440,000 at the peak of his career. Lilac is a full sister to stallion Stirling Liberty who was a World Cup showjumper with Australian Olympian Gavin Chester at just 7 years. Perhaps more important, Stirling Liberty is the sire of Snowy River Blackwood, top Grand Prix horse with Di Jenkyn. Java R is a full sister to Justin Thyme R, sold to Olympian Mary Hanna; to Jiminy Cricket R, bought by FEI dressage rider Michelle Cunningham; and to Jude R, bought by international Grand Prix rider Sue Hearn. Plus there is another spectacular brother, Jack in the Box R. Rio R is the first filly of this line to be sold - Ryans have retained a full sister. The Byalee Briar babies are renowned for their laidback temperaments and this amazing chap is no exception. Born buckskin and still sporting a dorsal stripe, he appears to be bay but time will tell! Beau is by the imported stallion Byalee Briar, who is by the legendary international Grand Prix dressage stallion, Bjorsells Briar 899, who has been the world’s top dressage stallion and undeniably the most consistently performing dressage stallion on the world stage for the past eight years, first appearing at Sydney Olympics 2000 and just recently retired at the World Cup Dressage Final in Las Vegas. On top of that, Beau is out of Belle, an elementary dressage horse by imported Grand Prix stallion Lutz, a magnificent trakehner stallion based in Western Australia with Sally-Leigh Woods. Sadly, Lutz is now deceased but his wonderful qualities of presence, conformation, movement and trainability continue on through his daughters. Belle is out of a Benito mare, Benito also imported. Rumba is by World Cup finalist and Australian Grand Prix dressage champion Regardez Moi, out of Richmeed Dancer who in turn is by Duntroon. Duntroon is the sire of Heath Ryan’s Olympic mount Greenoaks Dundee and Duntroon is by the legendary Olympic gold medallist at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, Donnerhall. Jazz Magic R’s full brother Jazzamatazz R was bought at auction by FEI rider Caroline Wagner.
