GUIDE “Lily of the Valley” National Historic Register District Presented to you by the Ridgway-Elk County Chamber of Commerce www.ridgwaychamber.com Ridgway-Elk County Chamber of Commerce Ridgway, Pennsylvania … Heart of the Pennsylvania Wilds and Gateway to the Allegheny National Forest By: Michelle Bogacki Ridgway Main Street Manager Visit Ridgway... You will soon feel the sense of pride we have for our community. No matter what the season, there is something here for everyone to enjoy. Ridgway hosts many exciting events throughout the year and is always a favorite for nature lovers and those who are just looking to get away. We are proud of what Ridgway has to offer in our unique downtown shops and eateries. Spend time in downtown Ridgway; shopping, admiring the art gallery, dining, and experiencing our historic past and catching a glimpse of our bright future. Or simply walk the neighborhoods that showcase our amazing Hyde Murphy history in our mammoth mansions. Ridgway sets within the heart of the Pennsylvania Wilds which certainly showcases the recreation that nature provides. We have many opportunities as the gateway to the 500,000 acres of the Allegheny National Forest. Just some of the activities include geo-caching, hiking, biking, trails, canoeing, camping, and of course, fishing. The Clarion River corridor is a gem of nature. Ridgway is proud to be the trail head for the Clarion River-Little Toby Rail Trail which follows the Clarion River 18 miles to Brockway, PA. Whether biking, canoeing, cross country skiing or hiking the area, be sure to keep an eye open for a bald eagle that may fly overhead. Don’t forget to stop at our Welcome Center located at the corner of Main and Broad Streets for more specific information to facilitate your stay. Michelle A Chamber of Commerce may be defined as a “vehicle” for mobilizing people to accomplish agreed-upon goals for the betterment of the community. Its specific purposes are to: · Increase business growth and development of jobs within the market · Assist in the orderly growth and development of the community and its people · Contribute to building healthy markets to assure economic stability · Retain the private enterprise system with free competitive markets Chamber of Commerce A Chamber of Commerce is a community’s business advocate. How this mechanism is best utilized is determined by the needs and desires of business and the community. A spirit of volunteerism and desire to contribute something back to the community are two important components, helping to lay the foundation of a Chamber of Commerce. Membership is open to any firm or individual who shares a common interest in improving and enriching the community. Members pay annual dues as their contribution to the organization and to help compensate expenses of the Chamber. Membership renewal occurs every January. A variety of services, publications, programs, and events are made available to the membership and their employees. The organization is run by a Board of Directors, elected by the Chamber’s membership. The Board of Directors is earmarked to set the policies and procedures for the Chamber. The policies and procedures set forth by the Board of Directors become the responsibility of the paid administrator (Executive Director). He or she, along with his or her staff, works with volunteers on task forces and committees to develop and implement courses of action for programs, events, position statements, issues, and so forth. In conjunction with the Steering Committee, the Ridgway-Elk County Chamber of Commerce hired a Main Street Manager. This position was created in order to pursue economic growth for Ridgway and the surrounding Township. The Main Street Program is funded through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. The Steering Committee consists of representatives from the Chamber, Ridgway Industrial Development Corporation, Borough of Ridgway, Ridgway Township, Ridgway Area School District, and Ridgway Heritage Council. A Chamber’s activities or issues can be virtually unlimited. Again, this is determined by the needs of its members and community, as well as the ability of the Chamber. Projects are undertaken only after sound and thorough analysis of their value and importance is determined. A Chamber is a civic clearinghouse, a public relations counselor, and a research and promotion medium. Simply put, a Chamber of Commerce is people working together to make their community a better place to live, work, and invest. One board member once said, “Our Chamber is the Booster Club for all the businesses in and around Ridgway.” Ridgway, Pennsylvania Visitor’s Guide 17 History History of Ridgway Hyde Hotel, 1949 Table of Contents 2 3 Where to Stay 10 Services ATMs Fitness Centers Groceries & Supplies Kennels Media Transportation Salons/Spas Churches & Cemeteries Education Emergency Services Medical Care & Assistance County Government Visitor’s Information Employment Assistance Legislative Information Local Government Real Estate Agencies Insurance Recycling Utilities 15 Directions 16 History of Ridgway 17 Ridgway-Elk County Chamber of Commerce Last Passenger Train, 1955 Clarion River Bridge There is little recorded prior to 1824 about the discovery of Elk County, but there have been findings that the first families to call this area home were the Seneca Indians. There have been some artifact findings nearby, and the Great Iroquois “Main Road” from Olean, New York to Kittanning, Pennsylvania crossed the Clarion River on the outskirts of what is now known as Ridgway, Pennsylvania. There is also legend that the Indian Maid of the Blue Rock married General Slade in 1809, with Chief Tamaqua, a Seneca chief, performing the ceremony. The legend claims that they opened a trading post in Portland Mills, an area just outside of Ridgway, in the 1800s. Until 1824, there were no houses or streets, only thick forests and wild animals. Then, in the early 1800s, Jacob Ridgway, a wealthy man from Philadelphia, purchased 100,000 acres of land in northwestern Pennsylvania; 40,000 of those acres were located in what is now Elk County. In 1821, when he wanted to sell the land to settlers, Jacob Ridgway hired James Lyle Gillis to come here from Philadelphia to start a community. Mr.Gillis first cleared a spot of land on Montmorenci, intending to lure farmers to this area. He built a house and farm buildings there. However, he soon found that the growing season for good farming on a large scale was too short and decided to move to what is now Ridgway, capitalizing on the abundance of timber and availability of natural water transportation. The intersection of Elk Creek and the Clarion River was an ideal place for a lumbering town. Gillis gradually convinced city people that there was much money to be made from the timber in the surrounding forests, which could also easily be floated down the Clarion River to market. From this, Ridgway was born and named for the man who owned the land. In 1833, the clearing was surveyed and a town site laid out. The lots extended north and south, and the majority were 65-feet wide by 160-feet long. The streets varied from 60- to 90-feet in width. Ridgway and Gillis, evidently with eyes to the future, reserved two acres in the center of the area from sale. This became the public square and is now occupied by the Elk County Courthouse and County Jail. One board member once said, “Our Chamber is the Booster Club for all the businesses in and around Ridgway.” Ridgway, Pennsylvania Visitor’s Guide 17 2/3/11 Ridgway, Pennsylvania Heart of the Pennsylvania Wilds and Gateway to the Allegheny National Forest Visitor's Stop in the Welcome Center to see the 7’ chainsaw carving of Sasquatch.
