THE NATISONE VALLEYS

Be amazed by this mysterious land hidden between the Julian Prealps:
four narrow wild-looking valleys, steep streams that flow between gorges
and waterfalls, unexpected caves amid verdant forests, in some places
views such as that of San Giovanni d’Antro, in others records such as that
of the Grotta Nuova, the longest cave in Europe. Between one valley and
another, are a few tens of small and very small villages with stone houses
and churches, typical of the 15th century, but also educational nature centres
such as the Villaggio degli Orsi, dedicated to discovering the large bears
that still inhabit these areas.
Having forever been a strategic territory for defending the Italian peninsula,
the Natisone Valleys preserve important remains of the Great War in
the open area museum of Kolovrat. The historical link with Italy has not
however erased the original Slovenian language and culture that enrich this
