I have been appointed by the commission to represent our district. There are a total of five people on the committee, one from each voting district and one appointed by the mayor. The city charter is the foundation document defining the geographical location of the city and having a mayor and four districts. The charter designates how a commissioner/mayor is elected, length of terms and specific duties. The charter also indicates the electorates’ right to call for a vote on a referendum, an initiative or a recall. We had an organization meeting in December and plan to have multiple monthly meetings before making recommendations to the commission on amendments. Meetings are open to the public. The charter is available online or from the city clerk. By creating attainable goals, the men and women of this agency have committed themselves to making Treasure Island one of the safest communities in Florida. Over the years, our department has adopted a community policing philosophy. By embodying the core principles of community policing, we have involved the community in creating solutions to the issues facing them. Our success was not built solely by our own hands, but rather, is the result of working together with our residents and businesses. Today, we continue our proud tradition of providing professional law enforcement services through a community policing approach.
