Dear F-O-Fs (Friends-of-Fireworks),
This year marks the 40th year of the fireworks
extravaganza at Innsbrook ... well, kind of. The show
never had an official start date ... it had an evolution. It
all began when we started building Innsbrook in 1971. As
most of you know, all of our utilities are buried, and in the
beginning we did all of the work ourselves, with the help
of many, many cases of dynamite to get through the rock.
Since the world was more secure in those days, we had all
this extra dynamite around and we began to use the stuff
as fireworks on special occasions (we defined a “special
occasion” as anytime we wanted to play with dynamite).
As I recall, one Fourth of July we had bought a bunch
of fireworks at the local stand and we went up to Lake
Lucern Dam to set them off. As an afterthought, we took
along a couple of sticks of dynamite for the finale. Our
“crowd” of probably 25 aficionados thought the whole
thing worthwhile and fun … and that began the gestation
process of what is now our signature event of the year.
We haven’t used dynamite in the show in more than 20 years, and although I miss the extra “kick” of the
cannon shots in the 1812 Overture, I don’t miss the blistering headaches we all got from handling the stuff.
(The nitroglycerine in dynamite gets on your hands and skin then into the bloodstream where it dilates
your blood vessels causing one awful headache.) We have gone from a do-it-yourself show to a full “blown”
production with a budget not equaled for a private show in the state, and come to think of it, not equaled by
any public show in this region also.
This show would not be possible without your support, as it is 100% financed by donations, advertisements
and contributions of time, materials, and goods. This show is symbolic of the “can do” Innsbrook
Community Spirit … of which we are all proud to be a part.
Enjoy the show!
Ed Boyce, Chairman (and pyro enthusiast)

a history of fireworks
Do you ever wonder why we shoot explosive, yet colorful,
fireworks into the sky to elicit “oohs” and “aahs” from
anyone nearby? Who started such a tradition? Who even
came up with fireworks to begin with?
Fireworks originated in China some 2,000 years
ago. The most prevalent legend has it that fireworks
were discovered or invented by accident by a Chinese
cook working in a field kitchen who happened to mix
charcoal, sulphur and saltpeter (all commonly found
in the kitchen in those days). The mixture burned and
when compressed in an enclosure (a bamboo tube), the
mixture exploded.
A Chinese monk named Li Tian, who lived near the
city of Liu Yang in Hunan Province, is credited with
the invention of firecrackers about 1,000 years ago.
The Chinese people celebrate the invention of the
firecracker every April 18th by offering sacrifices to
Li Tian. During the Song Dynasty, the local people
established a temple to worship Li Tian.
The firecrackers, both then and now, are thought to
have the power to fend off evil spirits and ghosts that
are frightened by the loud bangs of the firecrackers.
Firecrackers are used for such purposes today at most
events such as births, deaths and birthdays. Chinese
New Year is a particularly popular event that is
celebrated with firecrackers to usher in the new year
free of the evil spirits.
burst. Understanding these basics, one can appreciate
the potential for variation in the pyro artist’s work
depending on the shell shape and how each is packed.
Fireworks are rated by the size of the mortar tube from
which they are launched. At the Innsbrook show, we use
everything from a 4-inch to a 12-inch (the largest used
commercially). Fireworks are also sized by the amount
of breaks in a shell. A common type would be a twobreak with either two-color burst or a color burst and a
salute (a boom). In a two-break shell, the second break
is higher than the first break. In a three-break shell, the
third break bursts lower than the first two. A threebreak canister 12-inch shell can be 36 inches in diameter.
Four-break and five-break shells are rarely seen. The
record, by the way, was set by a fireworks manufacturer
in New York named Joseph Chiarello. He won a $50 bet
by creating a shell four inches in diameter and five feet
tall with 17 breaks.
One of the most common misconceptions about
fireworks displays is that fireworks are rockets.
Actually, the self-propelled rockets that are common
in C-class fireworks are virtually unheard of in larger
aerial displays. Instead, the fireworks are launched
from plastic, steel or aluminum tubes called “mortar
pipes.” An explosion launches the bomb shell which is
comprised entirely of payload packaged in a shell that
protects it from the lift-off explosion and the forces of
acceleration (the shell is traveling at 100 feet per second
as it leaves the tube).
The initial charge is ignited by an electric impulse from
a master control board in the case of modern displays
— including Innsbrook’s. The fuse ignites the initial
propulsion charge that fires the shell from the mortar
tube and lights a timing fuse in the shell. The fuse
time is calculated to ignite a bursting charge, usually
black powder, which bursts the casing, ignites the
contents and propels them away from the center of the
So this year, when you are watching the fireworks burst
into beautiful colors and shapes over Innsbrook’s Lake
Aspen, you’ll know a little bit more about how these
exploding beauties work. Enjoy the show!

Your New Summer To-Do List
How many of these 10 summer activities can your family check off this year?
10 IBK Summer Must-Dos
1. FIND YOUR PLACE IN NATURE
Check out our brand new trail maps and Nature Pocket
Guide and hit the woods! We have recreated the trail
maps for the Konstanz, Meadows, Aspen Spur, Tyrolean,
Grendel, Wynnbrook and Sonnenblick Hiking Trails.
The maps include directions on how to get to the
trailhead, photos of the trail, notes about what you’ll
see along the way and a space to sketch animals, trees or
flowers you see on your adventure. The Nature Pocket
Guide has information for all the trails in one booklet.
2. GO ON A PHOTO SCAVENGER HUNT
Don’t leave home without your camera! Any time
you’re exploring Innsbrook, be on the lookout for photo
opportunities. Capture a butterfly on a flower, a reflection
in the water, fall leaves beginning to change color or
the perfect sunset. Don’t forget to share your photos in
our Annual Property Owner Photo Contest and on our
Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/innsbrookresort.
3. PLAY A REALLY BIG GAME OF CHESS
Become a pawn in this classic game with our giant chess
set at the Aspen Center – a great way to enjoy a sunny
day outdoors while exercising your brain! This unique
opportunity is exceptional fun for the whole family as
players have to walk around through the game to make
their moves. Checkmate!
4. TAKE AN ADVENTURE THROUGH READING
Visit our Little Red Library in the Farmhouse area (by
the Summer Breeze concert concessions stand) and start a
new summer adventure with an exciting tale. The library
is always open, except during Summer Breeze concerts,
and there is no check-out system. Just show up, find a
good read and get ready to let your imagination soar.
5. CHECK OUT ALL THAT’S NEW AT IBK
Take a break from swimming in the lake and see where
you’ll be swimming next summer at the site of our New
Amenity Complex. Need to update your Innsbrook gear?
The Pro Shop has an excellent selection of Innsbrooklogoed merchandise like caps and shirts. Is your stomach
rumbling? Pay a visit to the completely reinvented
Clubhouse Bar & Grille. With a new menu, new staff and
new décor, it’s a whole new experience! Find out more
about all of these upgrades at www.innsbrook-resort.com.
14
6. LISTEN (AND TALK) TO THE BIRDS
Use online resources like www.allaboutbirds.org to
learn bird calls and songs that are common in our area.
While exploring the woods or your own backyard, see if
you can identify the birds that you hear and respond to
their chatter in-kind!
7. IDENTIFY WILDFLOWERS
Innsbrook is home to many varieties of colorful
wildflowers and native grasses. Hike any of our nature
trails, or just look around your property, and you’re
sure to see some beautiful blooms. Record what you see
including size and color and you’ll begin to notice what’s
most common. Experience the excitement of seeing a
new wildflower for the first time!
8. PLANT MILKWEED FOR MONARCHS
Help save the declining monarch population by planting
milkweed. Famous for their remarkable 3,000-mile
annual migration between Mexico and Canada, female
monarchs depend on milkweed to lay their eggs and
feed their caterpillar larvae. Find out about the different
varieties of milkweed from the Missouri Department of
Conservation: www.mdc.gov.
9. MAKE UP YOUR OWN NATURE-BASED GAMES
The possibilities are endless when you make up the
rules! Have a sandcastle building contest on the beach.
See who can catch the most fireflies. Play leap frog
with your friends. Use only materials that you find in
nature to create a work of art. You’ll look at nature in a
whole different way when you put away the electronic
distractions and immerse yourself in your beautiful,
natural surroundings. 10. BUILD YOUR OWN BOAT!
All you need is cardboard and creativity! Our Cardboard
Boat Race on August 1 will award prizes for the best
looking, most creative and fastest boats, as well as a
Team Spirit Award. Get your family team together to
become captains of your own cardboard cruiser.

History of Our Community
The American Dream is alive and well, and the story of
how Innsbrook came to be is a testament to that ideal.
Ed Boyce, Innsbrook’s founder and Chairman since its
inception in 1971, is a shining example of how a regular
guy, with a little perseverance and a lot of ingenuity, can
make his dream come true.
In the late 1950s, the energetic and clever then-23year-old Boyce had an idea to sell hooded sweatshirts
sporting the text, “U.S. Olympic Drinking Team.” The
sweatshirts were advertised in Playboy magazine at a
price of $5.75. “We sold 50,000 in 10 months,” Boyce
recalled. “I retired to the mountains of Colorado and
became a ski bum.”
That’s when Boyce first set eyes on an A-frame chalet
by an Aspen stream, and was gripped by an idea
that became the core of a sprawling A-frame resort
development that would dominate the wooded hills of
Missouri’s Warren County.
After growing up at Innsbrook, Boyce’s son, Charlie, and
Wobbe’s son, Warren “Chip” Wobbe Jr., officially joined
the Innsbrook Corporation team in the late ‘80s.
Warren Wobbe Sr. joined Boyce and his venture in
1969 and the Aspenhof development, located in Warren
County on Highway 47, was completed in September of
1971. Aspenhof consisted of 520 acres with 154 chalets. In
that same month, the two entrepreneurs began a project
that would grow to be almost fifteen times the size of
Aspenhof, and would come to be known as Innsbrook.
After much planning, discussion and petition-gathering,
Innsbrook was approved by the Warren County
Commissioners as a village on July 21, 1998. And today, we
are on the map as Innsbrook, Missouri, and proud of it.
In 2000, construction began on 236-acre Alpine
Lake, Innsbrook’s largest. We’re currently in the early
development stages of the 1,500-acre Tyrolean area
south of Alpine Lake. The area includes rolling forests,
the Tyrolean Hiking Trail and a historic log cabin,
which was donated to, and restored by, the Innsbrook
Historical Society.
Les Buechele joined Boyce and Wobbe in 1972 and nine
years later, the first phase of the Innsbrook development
was finished: 434 A-frames, more than 20 lakes, six tennis
courts, and 40 miles of road on its 1,600 acres.
The name “Innsbrook” is a nod to the scenic capital of
Austria’s Tyrol region, another place where beautiful
A-frames can be found clustered around small lakes.
Although the name’s inspiration came right out of
Europe, the idea definitely stemmed from deep in
Colorado. “We brought together nature, recreation and
serenity,” Boyce said.
In 2013 the first cottage display of our new “Cottages at
Alpine Woods” community opened (and was sold) and
the second display opened in 2014.
November 2014 saw the official groundbreaking at the
site of Innsbrook’s new Amenity Complex. The area will
house a zero-entry swimming pool, lazy river, naturethemed children’s playground, outdoor amphitheater and
fitness center. It’s full steam ahead for the construction
of this $3 million facility, with a planned completion of
the first stage of work in Fall 2015.
The Innsbrook Corporation continued to purchase
land along Highway F in Warren County throughout
the ‘70s. In 1980, they opened the second phase of the
development on the east side of Highway F.
Lake Aspen is a focal point for the east side of the
development, which is also home to tennis courts, a
restaurant, lodge-style conference center, and an 18-hole
golf course; in addition to A-frame chalets for second
homes; one-, two- and three-bedroom condominiums;
residential and vacation homes and villas.
With more than 7,500 acres (that’s over five-and-ahalf times the size of Forest Park!) and over 100 lakes,
Innsbrook is a wonderful, one-of-a-kind recreational
living community that we look forward to sharing for
years to come.

THE ANNUAL INNSBROOK FIREWORKS SHOW
Welcome to the 2015 Innsbrook Fireworks Show. Every year we work to make the show more spectacular than
the year before. As we go to press with this program booklet, we are approaching our goal of raising $110,000 in
donations, ads, sponsorships and merchandise to make this show possible. This is an outstanding accomplishment
in these times and is an unprecedented example of the community spirit of our property owners, advertisers and
vendors at Innsbrook. We have said we could not do it without your help and you graciously came through to
underwrite this event, our signature event of the year.
Special thanks to the many volunteers without whose help this show would not be possible and additional thanks to
J&M Displays, co-producers of this show. This is truly a community event. Please thank the property owners who
donated, and remember the businesses listed in this program. Enjoy the show!

THE INNSBROOK INSTITUTE
June 5-13 was the celebration of the 15th season of the
Innsbrook Institute Summer Music Academy and Festival.
15 seasons of the celebration of classical chamber music
performed in the extraordinarily beautiful and intimate
setting of Innsbrook. 15 seasons of hundreds of aspiring
and incredibly talented string students living among us and
studying with world-class artist faculty.
For this year’s anniversary season, the Institute welcomed 31
competitively selected string students, seven “Young Artists”
and an unbelievable group of world renowned professional
artists providing inspired chamber music performances.
Artists welcomed this year included newcomers Nozomi
Khudyev, Matt Zalkind and Beth Guterman, and patron
favorites Wendy Chen, Chee Yun, Grace Park, Helen Kim,
Simone Porter and the Calidore String Quartet, all under the
artistic direction of David Halen.
Performances ranged from the sweeping melodies of
Rachmaninov, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, and Debussy,
the Innsbrook Institute Festival Orchestra with Academy
students and artist faculty performing side-by-side, and
American Songbook classics performed by St. Louis pianist
Peter Martin and vocalist Helen Kim. The highlight of the
Festival was the 15th anniversary commemorative piece
commissioned by the Institute, composed and performed by
Peter Martin in honor of Institute founders Ed Boyce and
David Halen.
Save the date for the Innsbrook Institute Fall Gala and
Concert, Classical Country Fusion: the Showdown at the
Innsbrook Institute, to be held on Friday, October 9, 2015 at
the Aspen Center.
