THE COURT REPORTER RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH Lorraine Paige Lorraine Paige, 86 years old, became a member of ICH’s large family on June 4, 2011. Ms. Paige was born on December 28, 1925 in Lynchburg, VA. She was the middle child and lived with her three sisters and one brother! Ms. Paige graduated from Dunbar High School in 1943. She started working for the Department of the Army right out of high school and continued to work there for twenty years until she transferred to the Department of Commerce in 1963! Ms. Paige later met the love of her life at a party in Washington, DC and later wed in 1952. Together they had four lovely daughters whom she adores dearly. As a family they loved sports, especially baseball games! Here at Independence Court, Ms. Paige can be found playing cards and games with fellow residents and socializing throughout the halls with her many friends. We are very lucky to have Ms. Paige’s lively spirit grace the halls of Independence Court and have her a part of our family! Summer Olympics 2012 The summer Olympic Games is a time for celebration as athletes from hundreds of countries compete in numerous athletic competitions. The competitions are broadcast around the word on TV and other media. The Summer Olympic Games take place every four years, with the next taking place in London in 2012. Ancient Olympics Olympia, Greece was home to the first recorded ancient Olympic Games in 776 B.C. The ancient Olympic Games were held as a religious ceremony from 776 B.C. until A.D. 393, when they were banned due to religious reasons. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator, proposed a revival of the ancient traditions in 1894. Modern Olympics The first modern-day Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece in 1896. However, women were not allowed to compete until 1900. Due to World War I and World War II, there were no Olympic Games in 1916, 1940 and 1944. The Olympics were first covered on American TV in 1960, when the Games were hosted in Rome. The symbol for the Olympics is a series of five rings. The colors of the rings -- blue, yellow, black, green and red -- represent the major regions of the world: Africa, the Americas, Europe and Asia. SUMMER 2012 Participating Countries The 2004 Games in Athens, Greece featured 202 competing countries. Many of these countries have also hosted the Games, though there have never been any Games hosted in Africa or South America. However, the 2016 summer Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, so at that point Africa will be the only continent that has not been a host site. Sports The summer Olympic Games revolve around many different sporting events, including archery, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, kayak, cycling, diving, equestrian, fencing, field hockey, gymnastics, handball, judo, modern pentathlon, mountain biking, rowing, sailing, shooting, soccer, swimming, synchronized swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, track and field, triathlon, volleyball, water polo, weightlifting and wrestling. A pentathlon is a competition of five sporting events: shooting, fencing, swimming, show jumping and running. A triathlon is a competition that includes a swimming, running and biking portion. 7 HEALTHLINE NEW EMPLOYEES Keep Good Company The people around you have a great deal of influence on your attitude and state of well-being. Therefore, it is extremely important to make wise, well-thought out choices about who you spend your spare time with, says Richard Carlson in Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff With Your Family. Do you spend your time with friends who are truly nourishing to you, or do you choose your company more randomly? Perhaps you are friends with people without really knowing why – or out of laziness, perceived convenience or simply habit. It’s important to reevaluate and take an honest look at how you feel when you are with someone. Is the person helping you grow? Is he/she a person you admire and respect? Do you share similar values? Do you feel good about the way you’ve spent your time together? If not, it doesn’t mean you can’t still be friends, only that you might make the decision to spend less time with the person – which will create more time to meet new people or to spend more time alone or with your family.
