In the foreground planks have been removed from the pier to prevent it from being used as a landing stage, with a temporary footbridge providing access to the lifeboat station at its end. To the left of centre is a Type 22 pillbox camouflaged as an ice cream stand. Above it on the walkway is an additional gun emplacement. In 1941 the two gun houses were camouflaged as haystacks (the haystack in the field behind is genuine). Also on the photograph, a Type 22 pillbox is almost completely hidden at the junction of two hedgerows.
