PSHS Newsletter - Pioneer State High School
From the Principal Newsletter 1 – 4 February 2015 Welcome! Welcome to the 2015 school year. On behalf of our school community, I would like to extend a special welcome to those students and families joining our community for the first time this year. The start of any new school year is an important time in students’ lives, but 2015 has an additional significance as we mark the historic movement of Year 7 to high school. I have spoken to many of our new Year 7 and 8 students over the past week and it is wonderful to see them getting off to such a positive start in high school. All Year 7 and 8 students participated in an Activity Day last Friday at Harbour Beach to help them get to know other students and their teachers and to help them build a strong school identity through our island structure. As well as many new students joining our school, we also have several new staff members in 2015. Later in the newsletter, you will find an introduction to the new members of our Pioneer High staff. Achievements from 2014 Over the holidays, we confirmed further news about the achievements of last year’s Year 12s. There was a 10% increase in students receiving their Queensland Certificate of Education to 96%, which is well above the state average. There was also a significant increase in the proportion of students completing a Certificate II level qualification or higher to 98%, which is almost double the state average. A fantastic achievement was that every single Year 12 student left with either their QCE or a VET qualification. A number of students in the academic pathway also performed very well. Congratulations to Amy Brannan who received an OP2 and to Emma Campbell, Tenille Da Rin Perette and Tylah Standen who all received an OP3. Expectations for 2015 As we look to the school year ahead, it is important that all members of our community have a clear understanding of our expectations and of the priorities that will drive our work over the next twelve months. • Attendance: One of the most important determinants of students’ academic success is their level of attendance at school. Parents and caregivers can support our teachers by ensuring that their child is at school every day. While we don’t expect students to be at school when they are sick, it is not acceptable for students to stay at home for social activities, birthdays or other similar activities. Similarly, it is vital that students are on time every day and not missing out on important learning time. If your child is away from school, please call the absence line (4955 9260) or provide a note to your child’s Care Teacher. In 2015, we are working towards a target attendance rate of 95%. That means that out of 200 school days in the year, we are aiming for students to only miss ten days – that is an average of 2.5 days per term. • Uniform and Daily Appearance: Students are to be commended on the excellent standard of dress and presentation over the first days of the year. It has been great to see so many of our students wearing our new Pioneer uniform with pride. Last Wednesday around two thirds of our students were wearing our new formal uniform and they looked fantastic. The transition to a new uniform can always present a few challenges, but I am very keen to see even more of our students in the formal uniform each Wednesday. This morning we held our 2015 Student Leaders Induction Ceremony – a great opportunity for our students to be in their formal uniform for a very special event. There are a few new uniform items currently in short supply and information about this was sent home with students last week. Last Wednesday, it was great to see that most students not in their formal uniform had brought notes from home explaining the situation. While there will be some flexibility during our transition to the new uniform, our expectation is as soon as possible, all students are in the correct formal uniform every Wednesday. Please remember that as part of our transition arrangements students with the previous formal uniform (i.e. plain white shirt or blouse) are still able to wear this in 2015. It has also been great to see many of our staff getting into the spirit of more formal Wednesday attire! (continued over the page…) Expectations for 2015 (continued) The Student Planner contains information about uniform, presentation, electronic devices and other day-to-day matters that are important to the smooth running of the school. Please ensure that you and your child are familiar with these policies and expectations. Our expectations are clearly outlined in these policies and are explained at enrolment interviews and are regularly reinforced with students. Expectations in relation to matters such as shoes, jewellery and make-up have been in place for some time, so there should not be any surprises when students are asked to comply with these requirements. Students have entered into our school community with a clear understanding of our expectations. We look to parents to support the school’s expectations, which have been developed in conjunction with our Parents’ and Citizens’ Association. The new uniform, in particular, has been the subject of ongoing consultation over the past eighteen months. Part of being a member of a community is respecting the rules that govern that community. This is an important life lesson for students to learn and it helps to prepare them for the workplace and as responsible citizens in our broader society. The wider community also makes judgements about our students and our school based on impressions of how students present and conduct themselves. Wearing our uniform correctly and maintaining a high standard of personal appearance helps to build a sense of pride and identity and is a powerful visible indicator to others in the community of how great our school is. Priorities for 2015 Our school has a very clear strategic plan for how we aim to continually improve our school community and the opportunities, experiences and outcomes for our students. Each year, we identify key areas from our strategic plan that are our major priorities for the year ahead. A summary of our focus and foundation priorities for 2015 is provided on the next two pages. While we will continue our extensive work in embedding our highly effective and research-based approach to teaching and learning and improving literacy and numeracy as our core business, in 2015 we are also focussing on strengthening our behaviour management and student wellbeing structures as well as improving student attendance and engagement. Upcoming events and communication Our newsletter is available electronically and is emailed to all parents on our email list. It is also available from the school’s website and through the QSchools smart phone app. If you would prefer to receive a paper copy of the newsletter, please contact Mrs Tracy Doevendans on 4955 9206. A paper copy will then be set aside for your child to collect each fortnight. I would encourage all parents with access to a smart phone to install the QSchools app. It is available free for both Apple and Android devices. It provides quick and easy access to important school information and news as well as links to our newsletter and other resources. Pioneer also has a Twitter account (@PioneerSHS) and this is used to provide regular updates and important information. I would strongly encourage parents and guardians to follow us on Twitter so that you can receive regular updates or urgent messages. The senior students have an extremely busy year ahead of them with numerous assessments in all subjects and extracurricular events and activities throughout the year. It is important that they check their assessment calendar and other involvements carefully and plan their approach to each term thoroughly. An excursion in one subject is not an excuse for an extension on assessment in another subject. Students must plan their study and assessment work well ahead of time. Year 12 students need to consider seriously their report results from year 11 and discuss these results with you and with their teachers to determine how well they are progressing. Mrs Kylie Prichard, our Youth Support Coordinator, is closely monitoring those students who are struggling along their pathway to their Queensland Certificate of Education. She and I have been organising meetings, where necessary, with students to ensure they have every opportunity to achieve their QCE by accessing the support structures within the school. QCS preparation Preparation for the QCS test is continuing with the year 12 students who intend to sit the test. It is important that all students intending to sit the QCS test attend all preparation sessions and catch up any missed work. They will sit a full two day “dress rehearsal” during week 1 of term 2. Learning Excellence at Pioneer The LEAP Program is underway and the year 7 & 8 class are finding their legs in the IT and Music arena. I am excited about the opportunities ahead and look forward to watching this group of students in their LEAP endeavours throughout the year. In only a couple of weeks they will be out at the University gaining their first experience of Campus culture and IT learning! Habits of Mind I’d like to welcome all year 7 & 8 students and parents to the Pioneer community as well as any new students across the year levels and introduce the Habits of Mind to you. The following is a general introduction to the Habits of Mind that we employ in our planning, teaching and reporting. Pioneer prides itself on developing mindful, capable young people who practice the Habits of Mind in their daily lives. The 16 Habits of Mind are habits of thought and action that help people manage uncertain or challenging situations. They can help people take action when there is no known solution to a problem. The Habits support thoughtful and intelligent action. We all want students to be thoughtful, resourceful, capable members of the wider community. This table highlights the 16 Habits in their groups. They all help us succeed in studies at school and beyond! Thinking • • • • Thinking about your thinking (metacognition) Thinking and communicating with clarity & precision Thinking interdependently Thinking flexibly Responding & interacting • • • • • Data gathering • • • Applying past knowledge to new situations Questioning and problem posing Gather data through all senses Listening with understanding and empathy Taking responsible risks Responding with wonderment and awe Finding humour Remaining open to continuous learning Completing a task • • • • Persisting Managing impulsivity Striving for accuracy Creating, imagining & innovating If I was to suggest two Habits you might discuss with your child over the coming two weeks they would be: Persisting Stick to it! Persevering in task through to completion; remaining focused. Looking for ways to reach your goal no matter what. Not giving up. Apply Past Knowledge to New Situations Think back – what do I know that I can build upon? I am sure we have all experienced situations where our teenager really needs to engage in these Habits. Please remind them and use these at home because they are used here at school! Men’s natures are similar. It is their habits that carry them far apart”. - Confucius. Assessment Calendar All students will receive an assessment calendar during week 3. This will also be uploaded onto the school website and students need to highlight their subjects and check closely for the weeks where they have numerous assessment tasks due. Planning ahead and having a study schedule will help them to achieve to their potential. Ronlyn Fisher HOD Academic Performance and Learning Business Services Manager News Hall Hire Pioneer High has a vacancy for hire of our hall on Tuesday nights commencing from 4.30 pm. If you are interested or know of a group who may wish to train or play on our courts, please contact me in the first instance. A viewing of the hall can then be arranged at a mutually convenient time. If you have any queries in relation to the above hire, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Resource Fees Our accounts staff will happily accept cash, cheque or credit card. Direct deposits can also be made quoting your student’s name and “Res Fees”. Wherever possible, we would ask that payment is not made using Amex as this increases processing fees to the school. If you experience any difficulties, please make contact with us and we will attempt to work with you to come to a suitable arrangement. Relief Cleaners Are you interested in becoming a relief cleaner for Pioneer? When one of our regular employees is away, you will be contacted to seek your availability to work. Cleaners work 2 split shifts, one in the morning commencing at 5.30 am and they work through until about 8.30 am. The afternoon shift commences at 2.00 pm and they work through until about 5.30pm or 6.00pm. If you think you could work during these hours, or even some of them, you may be able to assist us. Relief cleaners are very valuable people, so please consider the above offer to become a casual relief cleaner for this school. Grounds and Buildings Use The school grounds and buildings are patrolled on a regular basis and any visitors to this school must have prior permission to be on site. If you notice any suspicious behaviour, please contact School Watch on 131788. Should you wish to make any enquiries in relation to the above, please do not hesitate to contact me on the school's phone number. Centrepay Option – Available in 2015 As of 2015, any parents/guardians will be able to make payments to our school via Centrepay. This facility will allow any customers who currently receive “an Australian Government Department of Human Services Centrelink payment, family assistance payment or Parental Leave Pay” to pay Pioneer State High School for any fees owing to the school ie. resource fees, excursions etc. If you wish to use this facility, there is a form which will be available from PioneerSHS and need to be completed and lodged with Centrelink so that your payments can be deducted on your behalf and then paid to Pioneer State High. Centrelink has a number of options you can use to complete your form which is to be lodged with them. The contact numbers appear below: Abstudy 1800 132 317 Families 136 150 Disability and Carers 132 717 Seniors 132 300 Employment Services 132 850 Youth and Students 132 490 We are hoping that this facility will be used by those families, receiving benefits from Centrelink. Please do not hesitate to contact us so that we can assist you wherever possible. Junior Precinct Our new junior students should have noticed by now that they have a lovely new area which they can call their own. A number of our school staff have spent an enormous amount of time refurbishing the area which is the Year 7 & 8 area. It has been beautifully concreted and surrounded by block brickwork with a number of small new gardens for the students to enjoy. Our thanks and appreciation must go to our School Facilities Officer, Malcolm, Michael Warne and Mrs Warne, Mr David Cameron and Mr Vince Attard who gave freely of their time on Saturday, 24 January to ensure this area was completed ready for our new students by Tuesday. We hope to have some additional shade over the concrete in the coming months if we are successful with a funding submission. There is a little more work to be done and hopefully we will see that dream come true with a bit of good fortune and funding to ensure this happens. Enjoy, students, make this area your own. It has become one of the very special places in the school to visit. Mrs C Searle Business Services Manager Guidance News My role as Guidance Officer at Pioneer State High School allows me to work with students, teachers, parents and community agencies. Guidance Officers are specifically trained in personal counselling, career counselling, learning and behavioural issues and psychometric assessment. The students I work with are those who have self-referred, referred to me by a colleague and in some instances following a phone call from a parent. Pioneer State High School works closely with all students to ensure there is a pathway to future education or employment when exiting Year 12. To help Year 12 keep abreast of what is on offer for future careers the school subscribes to a careers newsletter (mhscareers) that is emailed weekly to all Year 12 students. This is a very informative newsletter that caters for the needs of both OP and non-OP students. For parents to receive the newsletter, you will need to go to www.mhscareers.com, click on CONTACT US page and register. Parents are able to contact me either by ringing the general office or on my direct line 49559205. I am always happy to communicate with you. Robyn Hopkins Yr 7 Co-ordinator Year 11 News Young Sports Award – Shanae Mulitalo Don't mess with Young Sports Award winner Shanae Mulitalo – she has all the makings of an international martial arts champion. She won titles at the Kyokushin Karate New Zealand National Championships in Wellington and the Australian National Championships in Brisbane last year. Her sights are now set on the world titles in Japan later this year. But her sporting prowess is not limited to martial arts. She is also a champion school-age swimmer and athlete and won Mackay A-grade Softball's most promising player, most outstanding junior female and most catches awards last year. http://www.mackay.qld.gov.au/about_council/news_and_media/media_releases/australia_day_honours_for_to p_mackay_citizens Year 12 News Save the date for………. Mocktail! Date - Friday March 13 Place - Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre More information coming! Tickets on sale soon! Junior Secondary News I would like to introduce myself as the Junior Secondary Head of Department for 2015. My name is Bronwyn Nixon and I am very excited to be teaching at Pioneer State High School this year. I started teaching in 1992 in Townsville. My family and I then spent some time at Moranbah State High School. In 2005 we moved to Mackay. I have spent the last 10 years teaching at Mackay North. I have had the opportunity there to spend time as a year coordinator and Acting HOD of Department for Mathematics. One of my major roles as Junior Secondary HOD is Student Wellbeing for years 7, 8 and 9. I was very privileged on Friday of week 1 to spend the day with the year 7 and year 8 students, their year coordinators, care group teachers and Chappy Pete. The day started in care groups where students spent the first hour learning each other’s names and how to work together as a team. We then travelled to Mackay Harbour Beach where I got to witness and be a part of some fantastic team spirit. Can I just say a special THANK YOU to Ms Hopkins who organised a fabulous day for us all to get to know each other. Three things I would like to focus on this term: • • • HATS – Sun safety. I would love to see all students in hats when out in the sun. I have been told by a skin cancer doctor in Mackay that damage to the skin before the age of 15 determines what happens later in life. An example of this is our 18 year old son, who grew up in Moranbah as a swimmer, has had 3 potential ‘ugly moles’ already removed. BREAKFAST- Food for the brain. Research says that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. High protein and low carb is the best. Eggs and Bacon are great for the development of teenager’s brains (who would have thought). I will be talking a lot more about this in the coming newsletters. Breakfast club is also available at the school. WATER BOTTLES - rehydration: We all know how disgustingly hot it has been this summer. I would love to see all students bringing water bottles to school. Water is a very important part of living in NQ and without it our brains simply cannot work efficiently. As a parent of four teenagers (year 9, 11, 12 and a nearly 19 year old) I understand very well what teenagers are like ( or ) and know the challenges that lie ahead. Please do not hesitate to contact me on 49 559 208 or bnixo12@eq.edu.au for any questions or queries. I am really looking forward to the year ahead. Bronwyn Nixon Head of Department Junior Secondary SBYHN News Let’s talk about HEALTH My name is Rosanne Houley and I am the School Based Youth Health Nurse here at Pioneer High School this year. My role in the school is to promote health and wellbeing, and support our students through their journey at high school from a health perspective. The definition of health is not just the absence of disease or sickness, but a dynamic state of complete physical, mental, spiritual and social wellbeing. I work here on Mondays, Tuesdays and alternate Wednesdays. My office is in the library and I can be contacted on 49559222. If I am not available, please leave me a message and I will get in touch with you as soon as I am back in the office. With the school year starting it is important to give our students the best opportunity to focus and achieve well at school and having a healthy breakfast is a great way to start their day. Some easy-to-prepare, healthy breakfast ideas include: • • • • • Fresh fruit with wholegrain breakfast cereal and reduced fat milk. Toast with a thin spread of margarine (polyunsaturated or monounsaturated) Toast with cheese and tomato. Hot or cold reduced fat milk. Rolled oats made with quick oats. Add sultanas and reduced fat milk. Toast with a thin spread of margarine (polyunsaturated or monounsaturated). Orange juice. Baked beans on toast. Orange juice. Fruit or plain yoghurt with fruit. http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Healthy_eating_for_children_and_adults?open Have a great year!
