Dear Friends,
We hope our newsletter is helpful to readers who are planning to adopt or who already have dogs. In each issue, we
try to offer safety, health, and training topics for dogs of any age, because you can always teach an old dog new tricks.
We mean YOU, as well as your fuzzy friend!
I’m writing this last letter of 2010 with a critical topic in mind. In fact, if dog owners would practice these recommendations, there would be little need for shelters or rescue organizations. Most people expect a dog will be an obedient,
social companion who will attend to their every desire. In fact, dogs are amazing in their adaptability to our lifestyles.
Yet when a dog acts not as we expect but as a dog, people react with disappointment and frustration. At times, the
result is that a dog is taken to a shelter, or kept ostracized (crate, kennel or chain). Nothing could be worse for a dog
desperate to please. The result: anxiety, bad behavior for attention, and misery on the part of the dog and owner. Most
dogs are brought to shelters because of a major misfire in communications. We who rescue can take only a small portion of these dogs to the next level and then it’s up to the adopter. Understanding and maintaining a good relationship
with a newly adopted dog can be relatively simple, provided communication is effective and the dog’s needs are met.
Welcoming a dog of any age into a home requires preparation beyond buying toys, collars, food and cute bedding.
We expect people to research the psychology and fundamental principles of obedience training prior to a new dog’s
arrival. From the beginning, a dog must be shown kind, clear, consistent, and firm leadership. When H2H representatives meet with applicants in their homes prior to an adoption, they offer hands-on techniques and reading materials to
support the adopter’s understanding. We suggest that a new dog settle in for a few days before enlisting the help of a
trainer, even when an adopter is experienced. A professional trainer can assess effectiveness of the communication,
help with mistakes, and create a higher level of understanding to ensure a happy, lasting relationship. Of course, dog
training is really “people training”—you and every family member, right down to children old enough to participate.
(We discourage adoptions when children are very young). The dog’s “pack” is the entire family, which must be above
the dog in pack order. So don’t plan to send your dog to doggie boot camp, where someone else trains your dog, and
then expect your dog to respond to your commands. Training starts in the home, and every family member must participate! So whether you are planning to adopt or you have a dog who “drives you crazy,” you can make it work...if you
contact a trainer. Please do so without delay, and establish or restore one of the best friendships you’ll ever have!

This group of young community minded animal lovers recently presented the proceeds from a carwash and bake sale to Haven to Home
Volunteers Linda Gemberling and Lorena Hilner. The group of animal
lovers lives in the Peachwood area of Lewisburg and made a donation of
$327.90.
Cathi Shirk of Mifflinburg recently celebrated a milestone birthday. (More than a few years over 21, but we aren't saying
what number!) Her husband, Doug, held a surprise party for her and asked guests to bring a pet food item instead of
gifts. Numerous bags and cans of dog food where given and will help feed Haven to Home foster dogs. The cat food
was shared with a local cat rescue group.
Donations of food and pet supplies are always needed and appreciated by our foster families who are caring for our rescued dogs. Having a celebration party? Consider asking for gifts for the dogs instead of birthday, holiday, or anniversary
gifts for yourself.
A ZUMBA party to benefit Haven to
Home Canine Rescue was held on Saturday, September 25 at the Silvermoon
Banquet Hall in Lewisburg. Approximately 50 women of all ages and activity levels came to Zumba to help the
dogs. The dogs say wags and thanks to
Silvermoon for use of the banquet hall,
to DJ Andy from Night Lite Sounds
Inc., and to supporters who donated
prizes for the contests and snacks and drinks for the participants. Organizer Katrina Mouery and instructor Nichole Snyder planned the event that raised over $500 for Haven to Home. Haven to Home President Robin Montgomery, center
top in pink shirt above, set up the information stand and danced for almost the full two hours!
Pictured in the photo are Jason Dye and Kelly Anzulavich with their
dogs Rain and Athena. Jason and Kelly brought their girls to the first Yappy
Hour on a rainy August evening and have since become loyal Haven to
Home volunteers. Yappy Hour at the Towne Tavern in Lewisburg was held
each Thursday from Early August into October. Owner Brady Fisher donated a percentage of the evenings sales from the patio and the shanty to
Haven to Home. Patrons were encouraged to bring their well behaved dogs
and enjoy dinner with their four-legged friends and other dog lovers. In
spite of some rainy days and the days getting cooler and shorter in October,
the event was well received and attended. The popular Yappy Hour will be
back in June 2011. Thanks to all who attended or helped!

It has been one year since my husband and I drove the 90
minutes it took to first visit with Isabella. It took 1 minute
for her to convince us we were meant to be.
Izzy has become a part of our lives like we have never
dreamed. You were always kind and helpful in the process of
adopting her.
Izzy is the kind of dog who loves every little thing in the
world, and every day is a brand new, beautiful day with lots
of things to experience and enjoy!
In February we took up agility to see if we could put some
energy to good use. We had our first trial on her birthday,
7/4, and she won 2nd place in one of her first classes! We
were pleased and so surprised! As we look for a time to introduce a boyfriend to our very social little girl, we'll definitely remember Haven to Home! Rescue is the way! Thank you so much!

I first began fostering dogs with Haven to Home a little over 2 years ago. As an avid animal lover (we have 4
rescue dogs, 2 rats, 2 turtles and 1 cat) and owner of Aspen Hollow Kennels for over 13 years, it seemed like
the perfect thing for my kids and I to get involved in. We have fostered numerous dogs to date and have had
happy times and frustrating times but in the end, the happy times are what we recall when we talk about our
past fosters.
I fostered the first litter of puppies that came to H2H almost 2 years
ago. A litter of 8 seven week old adorable little purebred mutts. My
kids and many volunteers from H2H helped in their care and socialization. Their care was overwhelming at times but they were so much
fun! I still remember every one of their names and where they found
their new homes. As a matter of fact, the runt of the litter found her
new home with us and she is by my side every minute of every day.
The most gratifying moment in fostering is when my foster dog goes
home with his new family for the final time. Knowing that we are able
to help make a difference in the lives of these dogs that haven’t had
much of a chance in this world so far is a wonderful feeling. Each and everyone of our foster dogs have
touched our hearts in one way or another and have been a wonderful learning experience not only for my
children but myself as well. I am grateful that my family and I are able to help out such a wonderful organization made up of so many dedicated and amazing volunteers.
Haven to Home Sponsor a Dog Campaign
Not sure what to get the animal lover on your holiday shopping list who has everything? How about considering a donation in their honor to Haven to Home Canine Rescue. The local rescue group presently has several older or special
needs dogs in their care. Because of the dog's age or medical condition, they have incurred extra medical expenses
beyond the routine care that all animals entering our rescue routinely receive. All dogs are vaccinated, tested for
heartworm and lyme disease, spayed or neutered, treated for parasites and placed on flea/tick and heartworm preventative before they are adopted. Older dogs may require dental procedures, tumor removal, extra blood testing (Senior
Wellness Profile), or medication for chronic medical conditions.
Make a donation in honor of someone on your gift list and a notification will be sent to them. Choose from one of
these dogs:
 Flash is a senior lab mix, who is a great dog. But many people are hesitant to adopt an older dog. He also had ear
infections.
 Shadow Lee is an 8 year old senior Cocker Spaniel who is deaf and has been treated for ear infections.
 Betty is a 10 year old boxer who will be on medication for bladder control for the rest of her life. She was also
treated for Lymes disease.
 Dannie Girl is a young lab who was abandoned. She was missing half of her fur from a terrible flea infestation and
is being treated for dermatitis.
 Sassie Sue is a senior pom mix who had 2 tumors removed, one on her leg and the other a mammary tumor.

MEET HANNAH
AND
P AGE 7
SHADOW!
Hannah was found as a stray a few months ago. She is a two year old Rottweiler/
German Shepherd mix. She is quite shy and takes a while to warm up to people. She
seems to be more comfortable around females, but over time will adjust to a male in
the home. Hannah is looking for a home with someone who has the patience and understanding to help her understand this world is not such a scary place.
Shadow is an 8 year old cocker spaniel mix whose owner had
to move. He had lived in his original home with two other dogs. In his foster home, he is
living with another male cocker spaniel and they get along well together. When they go on
neighborhood walks, Shadow is always drawn to the kids out playing. He enjoys visits from
grandkids when they come to visit at his foster home.
He is slightly deaf. He has learned to sit for treats and knows some hand signals. He
LOVES to walk. He'll bring his leash to his foster mom when he wants to go for a
walk. When his foster family is active, he is too but when they are relaxing, he’ll sleep nearby. He plays with his Kong
and other toys. He is very easy to bathe and seems to enjoy the water. He will make an excellent companion, he is
affectionate and devoted. Shadow is neutered and up to date with all vaccines. Someone out there is missing a "great"
companion.
