we have rebranded!
We are not just an annual Film Festival - we are so much more!
To make this clear we have changed our name and we want to explain to you why we have
done this - with the wonderful assistance of Saatchi & Saatchi.
Over the 15 years of the Festival we have developed a wide variety of film based activities
and collaborations that we now offer year round. And why would we keep a secret about all
these important things that we are doing. So we have changed our name to UK Jewish Film
and we will be adding on to that title the various ‘building blocks’ of our new organisation.
There is much here that provides support for and beyond Jewish communities in London and
across the UK:
Video on Demand: We will
shortly be introducing this
facility which will make
numerous films available
direct to your computer
Film Festival :
Our annual event
All Year Round:
the many previews,
screenings and events
that we offer throughout
the year
Holocaust Education:
Our film based
programmes for schools
and colleges
Interfaith: The
development of interfaith
screenings & events both
in London & across the UK
Pears Short Film
Fund at UKJF:
Our hugely successful
short film fund
International:
We continue to create
and support Jewish film
festivals worldwide
Emerging Filmmakers:
We are increasing our work
with new young filmmakers
year round
We hope that you will follow our activities year round and we will be working hard to make sure
that you join us for so much more than the annual and amazing UK Jewish Film.... Festival

With our new title of UK Jewish Film we are taking on a more inclusive
role that will bring you year-round excellence. UK Jewish Film promotes
awareness of international Jewish life and cultures for a diverse
audience. We also provide a dynamic on-going forum for independent
filmmakers working with Jewish themes. However, the annual Festival
remains a huge focus of our identity and when something in life is so
important it is both a privilege and a joy to be able to pursue that
challenge.
Now in its 15th year the Festival continues to be a much anticipated
event for so many people. And this year our programme includes films
from 16 countries including Norway (Strictly Confidential); Russia (I Shall
Remember) and Poland (Joanna, My Australia, The Moon is Jewish), which
gives us a fascinating insight into the history and cultures of these
cultures. Israeli film remains a huge focus of our programme and we
are delighted to bring to the Festival Joseph Cedar’s impressive new
feature Footnote for our Bank Leumi (UK) Gala.
Each of the films that we invite to make up this unique programme
represents many years of work and dedication for the filmmakers
and their crews. It is a matter of huge dedication and determination
to complete a film and we commend our filmmakers for their
achievements. We feel enormously privileged to be able to enjoy this
hugely diverse cornucopia of films and plethora of talent that is
offered to us. We benefit when we retain the ability to sustain a sense
of wonder at the stories that these films bring to our screens. The
UK Jewish Film Festival brings you all this potential and again this
year we invite you to join with us to be both excited and entranced by
this programme of outstanding films. Thank you for being wonderful
audiences and we look forward to meeting you at the cinemas and to
sharing this sense of wonder with you all.
Judy Ironside.

this must be the place
Premiered at this year’s cannes Film Festival, starring double Oscar winner Sean Penn as
an ageing rock star who decides to find his father’s tormentor. From the opening moments
Sean Penn (The Tree of Life; All the Kings Men) is mesmerising in this comical and vulnerable
performance. When rock star cheyenne leaves his Irish country mansion and travels to
the US, on the impending death of his father, he lurches into into the highly unlikely role
of nazi hunter, taking over his father’s obsessional hunt for the man who humiliated him
in Auschwitz. What evolves is also a wry look at some key elements of troubled American
life, accompanied by stunning scenery and peppered with archetypal characters along
the way. Frances McDormand (burn After Reading; Fargo) is uniquely cast as cheyenne’s
uncomplicated wife of many years and David byrne’s appearance is a special cameo treat.
Sorrentino (Il Divo) proves that his talent as a director is both super cool and ambitious.

Fresh from its cannes prize-winning premiere comes the latest film by acclaimed
director and writer Joseph cedar (beaufort, Time Of Favor). cantankerous Professor
Eliezer Shkolnik (Shlomo bar-Aba) is a Talmudic scholar, who has laboured for years
in relative obscurity, whereas his ambitious son, Uziel (Lior Ashkenazi) has far greater
success. When a bureacratic mishap leads to Eliezer being informed he has won
a prestigious prize that was in fact intended for his son, the old man’s vanity and
resentment explode to the surface. As befits the academic context, words are the
star here: the dialogue bubbles with wry wit and cynical one-upmanship. Assured
direction with skilful editing keeps viewer sympathies shifting uncertainly between
the two bitter rivals. Occupying the ground between tragedy and comedy, and with an
epic score that elevates the story to a grand scale, Footnote is a subtle tale of ego,
temptation and ultimate betrayal. Daniela Boban

intimate grammar
‫הדקדוק הפנימי‬
It’s 1963 and Israel is still in its infancy. Eleven-year-old Aaron hunts for spies and
practices Houdini tricks with his friends. A thoughtful, poetic dreamer, Aaron is
secretly fascinated by his sophisticated neighbour Miss blum, and finds himself at
odds with his uneducated parents. but as his friends seemingly mature around him,
and Israel heads towards war with Egypt and Syria, Aaron finds himself increasingly
unable and unwilling to grow out of his childhood.
Director nir bergman brings acclaimed Israeli author David grossman’s coming of
age novel to the big screen with sympathy, sensitivity, and detailed observation.
newcomer Roee Elsberg leads a strong cast of Israeli stalwarts with his compelling
portrayal of Aaron, and Evelyn Kalpun makes an alluring and enigmatic Miss blum.
Showered with awards on the international festival circuit, Intimate grammar brings
the world of an adolescent boy in an adolescent country into vivid life. Dan Susman

A brilliant script with inspired biblical metaphors, The Flood is a
highly perceptive look at a family living under a deluge of pressure.
Everything is complicated in Yoni Rosko’s life. He is almost
13, extremely small and desperate to grow taller before his
approaching barmitzvah. Miri (Ronit Elkabetz) and gidi (Tzahi
grad), his dysfunctional parents are on the brink of divorce
when Yoni’s older brother Tomer, (Michael Moshonov – Lebanon)
an autistic boy who has been living in an institution for many
years, returns home when it is shut down. Whilst his parents
are incapable of looking after Tomer it is Yoni who becomes the
unwilling caregiver, using the rituals of the barmitzvah ceremony
and the framework of an abandoned boat as a life raft.
As they try to keep up appearances, the story of noah and the
flood resonates throughout, and they gradually find a way to
weather the storm that engulfs them. Judy Ironside

chariots of fire
Four Oscars, a fabled storyline of triumph over adversity and one of the most recognisable
soundtracks in film history: it must be chariots Of Fire, Hugh Hudson’s debut feature which
celebrates its thirtieth anniversary this year just in time for the London 2012 Olympics.
based on a true story from the 1924 Paris Olympics, this evergreen tale of british sporting
glory, produced by Lord David Puttnam and featuring nigel Havers as Lord Andrew Lindsay,
stars ben cross as Harold Abrahams, a young Jewish student at cambridge University, and
Ian charleson as Eric Liddell, a runner from a religious missionary family in Scotland. With
the virulent anti-Semitism of the 1920s british establishment on one hand and puritanical
disapproval of the church on the other, obstacles off the track prove more demanding than
those on it, but competing on the biggest stage, particularly when captured in super-slow
motion to soaring piano and electronics, brings very public vindication to them both. An
inspirational classic. Daniela Boban

So many wartime films like their narratives to be broad-brush: beacons of individual heroism
among terror and sweeping arcs of good and evil. Habermann is resolutely none of these,
rather an engaging, morally complex take on World War II and the rapidly shifting loyalties
of wartime. Wealthy mill owner August Habermann, part of the centuries-old german
population of czech Sudetenland, is married with a young family to local czech beauty
Jana, and cares not a jot about nazis, the Resistance, or ideology of any kind. but when the
german army invades his small-town haven, the fact that he is german and his wife part
Jewish forces him to make compromises that place him at the centre of a violent spiral that
tears everything he knows apart. A brave cinematic exploration into the impossible choices
of war that throws revealing light onto an uncomfortable and little known
chapter in European history. Jonathan Walton

When director Shlomi Eldar asked Israeli physician Dr. Raz Somech if he could film
his attempts to treat a Palestinian child for a deadly immune deficiency, Somech
gave his agreement. The result is an exceptional film dealing with the extremes of
emotion, a doctor’s commitment and Middle East tensions. born without an immune
system, 4 month old Palestinian, Mohammad Abu Mustafa, will die without a bone

A desperate plea from his doctor to save Mohammad’s life leads Israeli journalist

With a carefully constructed middle class life in London, Lara (clara
Khoury), a Palestinian woman has neatly side stepped the dark
shadows of her early life in Ramallah and her complex relationship with
her childhood friend Inam (nataly Attiya). Thirteen years later and Lara
now has a husband, a young son, a suburban house and a daily routine
that gives her a veneer of a conventional marriage. When Inam forces
her way into this well ordered existence the chaos she brings invades
this closely managed reality. Sagall has created a highly intimate story
that challenges our notions of morality and sexual promiscuity and
demands that we look at both the fantasy and reality of the currency
of sex and how it can be used to control and destroy human lives.
Focusing on the dual arenas of the Middle East and sexual politics
raises highly charged issues. Judy Ironside

the apprenticeship barney’s
of duddy kravitz
version
Adapted from the fourth novel by
masterful Canadian author Mordecai
Richler (Barney’s Version), Duddy Kravitz is
a bittersweet, cautionary tale about the
Jewish immigrant dream. Insecure Duddy
(played by charismatic, young Richard
Dreyfuss) is the eponymous hero on the
make, a hardworking wise guy desperate
to prove himself - brimming with ideas
and determined to be nobody’s fool, unlike
his cab-driver cum pimp father. When
beautiful Yvette falls for him, Duddy
hatches a plan to buy an idyllic lake in
the mountains, and to achieve his goal,
he’ll stop at nothing. With typical Richler
poignancy, Duddy’s urgency becomes his
downfall, and in pursuit of his material
dream, he soon finds everything else
slipping away from his grasp. Set with
great warmth in the Montreal Jewish
community of the 1950s and featuring
excellent comic touches, including the
funniest barmitzvah scene of all time,
Duddy Kravitz is a hilarious and ultimately
heart-breaking classic. Jonathan Walton

With its realist aesthetic and social
setting reminiscent of Laurent Cantet’s
The Class, the latest drama from Alain
Tasma (Ultimatum) pulls no punches
in its unflinching portrayal of France’s
disenfranchised youth and a nation
struggling to redefine itself. Young,
idealistic Jewish teacher Anna is up
for the challenge in her new job at
a deprived, multi-ethnic school in a
tough Paris suburb. Full of enthusiastic
belief in the power of education, she is
determined to make a difference to the
lives of her students, who mostly come
from low-income, immigrant families.
She is particularly drawn to Lakdar, a
bright young Muslim boy, whose dream
of becoming a professional illustrator
is crushed when an accident leaves
him without the use of his right hand.
Lakdar’s bitter disappointment leads
him to take radical action, dragging
him into a downward spiral that puts
Anna’s liberal beliefs to the ultimate test.

A thoroughly inspiring documentary
following Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg and
his dog, Mitzpah, when they took to the
road in October 2010, walking over 300
miles from Berlin to Hook van Holland on
a very personal journey. On Kristallnacht,
9th November 1938, the Nazis destroyed
the interior of the Westend Synagogue,
Frankfurt-am-Main, where Rabbi
Wittenberg’s grandfather, Dr. Georg
Salzberger, served as Rabbi from 1910
until the family fled to the UK in April
1939. However, the Eternal Light (the Ner
Tamid) continued to burn and this light,
which shone through the darkness and
turmoil of those dark days, symbolised
the hope which is still the essence of
Judaism and all other faiths. Jonathan
has a gentle and spiritual approach to
his journey whilst carrying a symbol of
eternal light. Along the way he met many
communities and even found time to hold
interfaith meetings, inspiring people with
his own particular brand of wisdom and
faith. Judy Ironside

the collaborator crime after

crime
‫רחוקים‬
A powerful human documentary about
some of the least known participants of
the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Ibrahim
El Akel had been informing on Palestinian
radicals in secret for the Israeli Shabak
security service for two decades, when
he was outed as a collaborator and
forced to flee with his wife and five
children to Israel. With no sign of the
new identity papers promised by his
Israeli handler, Ibrahim’s wife Yusa and
their teenage children feel alienated and
humiliated, and the family soon turns in
on itself.
Over two and a half years, directors Adi
Barash and Ruthie Shatz have gained
access to deeply intimate moments in
the life of this family on the edge. An
engaging, moving film that will challenge
those who like their Middle Eastern
politics in bite-sized pro and anti labels.

This superbly constructed documentary
follows an emotional roller coaster as
‘pro bono’ lawyers Joshua Safran and
Nadia Costa endeavour to find justice
for the plaintiff Deborah Peagler,
imprisoned for over a quarter of a
century. In 1983 Peagler, a woman
brutally abused by her boyfriend, was
sentenced to a minimum of ‘25 years
to life’ for her connection to his murder.
When a new penal code was introduced
in California 20 years later, it finally
looked possible to review Peagler’s case
and so began a six-year legal battle.
The shocking statistic at the core of
Potash’s gripping documentary is that
80% of women in prisons in the US are
survivors of some form of rape, abuse or
domestic violence.
Safran, Costa and Peagler make
an unusual trio, but their combined
strengths are a unique blend of
emotional intelligence and integrity that
makes for compelling viewing, which
overshadows many traditional fictional

David tells the story of Daud, an eleven
year old Muslim boy growing up in
Brooklyn. As the son of the Imam of
the local mosque, he has to juggle his
father’s high expectations, the dynamics
of a conservative family, and being
different – even from his peers in the
Muslim community.
Through an innocent act of good faith,
Daud inadvertently befriends a group
of Jewish boys who mistake him for
being Jewish and accept him as one of
their own. While working together on a
summer project, a genuine friendship
is formed between Daud and Yoav, one
of the Jewish boys. Unable to resist
the joy of a camaraderie that he has
never felt before, David, as he is known
to the Jewish boys, gets drawn into a
complicated situation that is based
upon both the best of intentions, and
youthful deceit. Joel Fendelman and

In May 1973, David Perlov, fed up and
disillusioned with mainstream Israeli
cinema buys himself a 16mm camera and
begins filming his Diary, a project that
what would turn out to be one of the
most distinguished films ever produced
in the country. For over a decade, Perlov
filmed the Israeli reality, he fused self
portraiture with memory, and the poetry
of everyday life with politics creating an
emblem of an historic moment. When
Channel 4 television heard about the
film they asked him to cut his material
into 6 x 52 minute parts and it is part
one that we are showing here. Focusing
on his wife and twin daughters, the Yom
Kippur war and a trip back to Sao Paulo,
the place of his birth, this beautiful film
is certain to captivate and have you
running to see the remaining five parts.

Religious society is fertile ground for
powerful documentary storytelling particularly when told from the inside. In
this compelling glimpse into the world of
religious women, teacher Ruchama and
wigmaker Tikva, two strictly Orthodox
women, dream of expressing themselves
by making their own films. However, the
obstacles they face in order to achieve
their modest goal of showing their work
to an all-female audience throws other
filmmakers’ more prosaic dilemmas into
sharp relief. The two dreamers must
overcome not only the censorship of
their rabbis’ deep mistrust of film in
general, but a broader suspicion of a
woman’s desire to step outside the rigid
social norms. Debut filmmaker Efrat

Thrilling, edge-of-your-seat docudrama about the intrigue leading up

of SS Obersturmbannführer Adolf

Lothar Hermann is a tango accordionist,
scraping out a living in Buenos Aires

As he hears Nick talk both about the war

The battle to prove his suspicions to

astonishing dramatised interviews with

‫פלטשקעס‬
comme les cinq doigts de la main
A box office hit in France, this crime
thriller is set among the tightly-knit
Algerian Jewish community. The original
French title (Comme les 5 doigts de
la main - like five fingers on a hand)
gets the intimate family atmosphere
perfectly, throwing us straight into the
world of the five Hayoun brothers and
their recently widowed mother. When
the youngest, David, breaks out of jail
and arrives with a bag stuffed with cash
and seedy underworld figures in hot
pursuit, he hopes he can count on family
loyalty. Stunned by the sudden change
of events, the family rallies together to
take on his tormentors, a decision which
causes unexpected tensions and dark
revelations about the family’s past to
come to the surface. With sharp plot

Fluchkes (Yiddish for flabby arms) is an
honest, humorous look at growing older
and its relationship to creativity and
art. The film follows a group of talented,
energetic and feisty women, all aged
between 72 and 82, as they prepare
for a professional dance performance.
Intimately observing a year of grueling
rehearsals building up to the final show,
director Ofer Inov gains close access
to the group’s dynamic, rivalries and
friendships as they struggle to tease
out a high quality performance from
their ageing bodies.
The film takes us through the personal
journey of each of the women, their
motivations, struggles and fears. Fully
aware of their physical limitations, they
are determined to prove that they
are first and foremost performers
and artists, refusing to be identified
and judged solely by their age. These
charming, proud and straight talking
women offer us an insight into the
nature of ageing that is thoughtful,

The best-selling novel by Shulamit Lapid
is brought lovingly to the screen by
veteran director Dan Wolman. Having
escaped pogroms in Russia, seventeen
year old Fanya arrives in Jaffa port
with her baby, an ageing uncle and an
emotionally traumatised brother. Lost
and unable to support her family, she
marries young widower Yechiel, and
together with other pioneers, they
work the barren Galilee land. Brought
together by misfortune and mutual need,
the young couple try hard to build a new
life, but a terrible secret from Fanya’s
past refuses to leave them in peace.
Weaving the historical narrative with a
poignant love story, the film brings to life
the period of late-19th century Jewish
immigration to Palestine. Beautiful
cinematography recreates the
physical surroundings, landscape and
sun-drenched fields of the countryside,
while the masterful, slow-paced
direction evokes the atmosphere of
the time, with its pioneering spirit,
hardships and great promise of hope.

When Adolf Eichmann was sentenced
to death, his guardsman Shalom Nagar,
who is now a Jewish ritual slaughterer,
drew the short straw to be his
hangman. Weaving together Shalom’s
present work at the abattoir with his
memories as a prison guard, this warm
documentary charts the life of a man
who found himself on several occasions
at the heart of key historical events in
Israel. Shalom is a deeply philosophical
and spiritual man, who uses humour
and charity to help everyone around
him, despite going through his own
personal tragedies. Through his story of
being compelled as a Sephardi Jew to
carry out the hanging of Eichmann, The
Hangman not only raises vital questions
about the treatment of ‘others’ but
also makes us question where our own
measures of tolerance lie. For Shalom,
a national burden became his own, yet
he continues to believe in the power of
humanity.

how to re-establish the human

turbine
‫הטורבינה האנושית‬
When filmmaker Dan Edelstyn discovered
that his Jewish grandparents were
once the owners of a vodka distillery
in the Ukraine, the stage was set for an
unlikely, often uproarious documentary.
How To Re-Establish a Vodka Empire is
Edylstyn’s own account of his attempts
to retell his family’s story, and save the
village in which they once lived from ruin,
by re-branding the vodka still produced
there and launching it abroad. The
re-named Zorokovich 1917 Vodka is
becoming something of a success story,
already making its way into UK shops and
bars, and the film portrays Erdelstyn’s
fascinating quest, interspersed with
historical re-enactments of the life
and fate of his Ukrainian forbears.
Fascinating and charming, it is a moving
exploration of Jewish history in Eastern
Europe as well as a crash course in the
cutthroat nature of business. Andrew

saved, he realises his father was more
of a hero than in his wildest dreams.

An enchanting journey to a magical
place that evokes a sense of mythology
and immortality - Weissensee. Britta
Wauer’s award-winning film brilliantly
weaves memories of the past together
with a contemporary reality. Weissensee
is the oldest Jewish cemetery in Europe
covering over one hundred acres with
more than 115,000 graves ranging over
130 years of burial and memorialisation.
Whilst the city of Berlin is close by,
this haven of peace and seclusion is
surrounded by a jungle of trees and a
lush profusion of foliage. The cemetery,
which was never closed during the
Nazi era, miraculously remained in
Jewish hands. Today it is being lovingly
renovated, and the documentary is a
true celebration of the power of film
to capture and record a sense of awe,
that is bestowed on Weissensee by
a delightful array of local characters
who are working to bring about its
restoration. Judy Ironside

kaddish for a
friend
kaddisch für einen freund
1940s Poland: Middle class pianist Joanna
(Urszula Grabowska, who received several
best actress awards for the role) goes to
church to pray for news of her husband
at the front. But she stumbles across
petrified eight-year-old Jewish girl, Rose,
who has somehow managed to evade the
Nazis who captured her mother. Joanna
decides to hide Rose in her flat but finds
herself faced with tough decisions as her
neighbours become suspicious and it is
increasingly unclear who can be trusted.
Matters complicate further when she falls
victim to a denunciation, and must contend
with the romantic advances of a Nazi
officer (Joachim Paul Assböck). Veteran
director Feliks Falk draws a commanding
performance from his cast, not least from
Sara Knothe who plays the young Rose, and
Piotr Sliskowski’s cinematography is stark
and elegant, helping to convey the tragic
power of this drama about righteous
gentiles. Dan Susman

A warm tale about an unlikely friendship
between two lonely, displaced
characters. Alexander is an 84-year-old
Jewish war veteran who is desperate
to remain living independently in his
Berlin flat. Palestinian teenager Ali and
his family arrive from a refugee camp in
Lebanon, and to gain acceptance from
his new peers, Ali agrees to break into
his next-door neighbour’s flat. When
Alexander comes back to his ransacked
home, he recognises Ali, and to avoid
being deported, Ali’s family send him back
to repair the damage. As they work side
by side, the relationship between the
feisty pair flits between mutual dislike,
understanding and finally friendship,
when they realise that the fragile
existence of each depends in a large
part on the other. Inspired by a true
story, Moscow-born, German director
Leo Khasin’s debut is a stirring, comingof-age story that shows just how hard
unlearning prejudice can be.

kafka’s last
story
lod detour
‫מעקף לוד‬
‫הסיפור האחרון של פרנץ קפקא‬
While the world may be eternally
grateful to Max Brod for preserving
some of the greatest works of 20th
century literature and transforming
Franz Kafka into a global cultural icon,
Kafka himself may be turning in his
grave. Kafka’s final wish stated that
“all that is left in my estate must be
burned completely, without reading”,
was famously disregarded by his closest
friend, and the rest is literary history.
However, nearly a century after Kafka’s
untimely death, the fate of his invaluable
manuscripts is at the heart of a heated
debate involving millions of dollars and
political wrangling between Israel and
Germany.
The film follows the manuscripts from
their initial journey in Brod’s suitcase
from Nazi occupied Europe to Israel,
to their current location, gathering
dust in a run down Tel Aviv apartment,
closely guarded by an unstable, eccentric
woman and dozens of cats. The result is
a twisted, bizarre detective story, whose
irony and absurdity would not have been
lost on the great man himself.

Hulud, an Arab girl who struggles with

mahler on

mary lou
‫תמיד אותו חלום‬
mahler auf der couch
Felix and Percy Adlon (Baghdad Café)
a father and son directing team, have
created a multi-layered and intriguing
film, which is a heady blend of comedy,
romance and introspection. This fictional
recreation of the real life therapy
between composer Gustav Mahler
and Sigmund Freud (Karl Markovics),
deals with highly personal aspects of
Mahler’s emotional life, in particular his
wife’s extra marital affair. Alma Mahler
(Barbara Romaner) is a vivacious and
flirtatious muse who inspires not only
Mahler himself, but also the artist
Gustav Klimt and the novelist Franz
Verfel. Her affair with the architect
Walter Gropius is the primary reason
that Mahler consults with Freud.
With a stunning film score from
Mahler’s symphonies recorded by
Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Swedish
Radio Symphony Orchestra, there is
a serious dark undertone to this film,
which beautifully conveys the intensity of
Vienna’s cultural life in the latter days of
the 19th century. Judy Ironside

eichmann trial
‫זכרונות משפט אייכמן‬
Perlov’s compelling film is comprised
of layers upon layers of memory from
key witnesses at the Eichmann trial. He
decided to make the film partly
as a response to Alain Resnais
documentary, Night and Fog, which did
not explicitly examine the fact that the
Final Solution was aimed at destroying
the Jews. Perlov’s method is to use
simple interviewing techniques to
explore what effect the trial had on
witnesses, families of survivors and
other Israelis.
He approaches the trial as a formative
event that turned into a memory itself
- one that has a prominent place in the
Israeli experience even today.
The scene in which Perlov asks the Polish
photographer Henryk Ross to reveal how
he managed to take secret images of
the Lodz Ghetto is one that stays with
you for a long time. Other prominent
witnesses include Rafi Eitan who
was behind the operation to capture
Eichmann. Marc Isaacs

An extraordinary documentary about
self-discovery and conflicted identities
in contemporary Poland. Paweł’s
religion was football, and he lived his life
according to the code of violence on
the terraces in his hometown Warsaw.
When he finds out that his family was
actually Jewish, his entire world is turned
on its head: he marries an Orthodox
woman and starts a new life with a
young family as a strict Orthodox Jew.
He dares not go back to the stadium he
loves, and feels isolated, both as a Jew
within Warsaw’s tiny community and as
a Pole forced to leave behind friends for
whom hatred of minorities is an article
of faith. With thoughtful, reflective
direction from Michał Tkaczyński and
a lyrical thread from provocative poet
Marcin Świetlicki, The Moon is Jewish is an
intimate, insightful film about how hard
it is to reconcile the parts of ourselves
that sometimes just won’ t fit together.

mordecai richler: my australia
the last of the wild jews
Canadian novelist Mordechai Richler
undoubtedly belongs in the pantheon
of Jewish giants who dominated North
American letters writing in the second
half of the twentieth century alongside
Saul Bellow, Philip Roth and Norman
Mailer amongst others. The archetypal
angry child of immigrants, raised on
a diet of comic books, the Talmud and
Isaac Babel’s tales of Jewish gangsters
in Odessa, Richler was, like his famous
colleagues, perfectly placed to shake up
the complacent post-war status quo,
changing the cultural landscape for good.
Feisty, contrary and predictable only
in his unpredictability, Richler rejected
easy categorization. This engaging film
manages to get under the surface of
this incomparable artistic voice, and
capture a personality which could just as
easily be charming, gentle and thoughtful.
Richler is best known for The
Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz and
Barney’s Version, both adapted into
award-winning films that will receive
special screenings at this year’s UKJFF,
and Solomon Gursky Was Here, shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1990.

the experiences of Tadek, a ten-yearold anti-Semitic boy in 1960s Poland,
who yearns for Australia. Things get
complicated when his older brother

gang that beats up Jewish children, and
Tadek’s mother reveals she is actually a
secret Jewish survivor of the Warsaw
Ghetto. She tells Tadek his dream has

Australia – though this turns out to be
Haifa, Israel. When their mother fails to
find employment, Tadek and Andrzej are
dispatched to a kibbutz, and a culture
shock they’re ill-equipped to cope with.
Jakub Wróblewski is hugely watchable

whose angel face belies his precocious,
streetwise naughtiness. Both writer
Ami Drozd and co-producer Marek

Fast-paced wartime action with
unexpected comedy twists. 1930s
Vienna: art-dealer Victor Kaufman
tells a family secret about a valuable
drawing to his best friend and adopted
brother, Rudi. When the Nazis invade,
Rudi reveals a secret of his own: he is a

seized drawing becomes a personal gift

it is discovered to be a fake, Victor is
dragged out of the concentration camp
to avert an international diplomatic
disaster. On the plane home, a fatal
crash allows Victor the opportunity to

The story of a unique and courageous
figure, Sir Nicholas Winton and his
remarkable rescue mission that
remained untold for nearly half a century.
Called “Britain’s Schindler” by former
PM Tony Blair, Winton was the brains
and organisational force behind the
Czech Kindertransport that saved 669
children in the first six months of 1939,
running operations from a hotel room in
downtown Prague until the start of the
war forced the end of the programme.
A modest English stockbroker of
German-Jewish heritage, Winton’s
incredible story has only come to light
in recent years. Slovak director Matej
Minac, whose mother was one of
Winton’s Kinder, has made a powerful
part-dramatisation, part-documentary
film that revisits the topic that won him
an International Emmy in 2002 (All My

Meet Avi Meshulam, regional manager

an industrial backwater near Tel Aviv.
He’s also the Israeli incarnation of the
infamous David Brent.
Following the success of the US version,
Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s
ground-breaking comedy series gets the
Israeli makeover. Gareth becomes Yariv,
Tim becomes Yossi - while Big Keith has
transmogrified into Yevgeni, a dourfaced Russian immigrant. Then there is
Leah, the perpetually pregnant Charedi
lady with a penchant for sleazy pop
songs – for whom British society lacks an
analogue.
Some episodes are based on the UK
originals but with a uniquely Israeli
spin. Others take the format in fresh
directions, sharply satirizing Israeli
society. The result is fascinating,
surprising, and most importantly - funny.
It also answers an interesting question:

Tomer Heymann’s poignant meditation
on family, loss, and the mental maps of
homelessness. The film navigates the
intimate lives of five brothers and their
mother, as they experience the pains
of exile and the joys of family bonding.
Three of the Heymann sons take their
families and leave Israel for “better”
lives in America. Their mother, a divorcee,
is left alone in Israel with her two
bachelor sons, one straight, and the
other, Tomer, gay.
Exploring the politics of belonging,
displacement, and sexuality, the film
examines the hard decisions one family
has to make, and the intractable bonds
that unite them. Throughout, Tomer
frames this quest in terms of its
greater social and political significance.
Combining 8 and 16mm footage with
his own work of a decade, Tomer shows
how the strength of the Heymann
Family depends on forces greater than
the nuclear family itself. The result
is a powerful and intimate portrait
of one man, his family, and the world
surrounding them.
France’s best-loved talking cat, star
of a hit comic book series, makes his
big screen debut in this long awaited
adaptation by celebrated graphic
artist-turned-director Joann Sfar
(Gainsbourg). Rabbi Sfar lives a quiet life
by the sea with his beautiful daughter
Zlabya and her pet cat in 1920s Algeria.
After swallowing his arch-rival the family
parrot, the cat receives the miraculous
gift of speech, with no intention of ever
shutting up! This irreverent, quick-witted
feline loves discussing philosophy and
Jewish law and demands to have a Bar
Mitzvah. When a mysterious stranger
arrives in the city, the Rabbi, his cat and
an array of motley characters set off on
a fantastical Indiana Jones adventure
into the unknown heart of Africa.
Co-directors Joann Sfar and Antoine
Delesvaux use beautiful hand-drawn
animation and a nostalgic, groovy
soundtrack to bring multicultural,

and European inhabitants lovingly to

late night horror
rabies
‫כלבת‬
The creepy confines of the woods provide the perfect setting for Rabies, Israel’s first ever
horror film. Co-directors Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado met when they were tutor and
student at Tel Aviv University, and Rabies was born of their shared desire to bring something
edgy and new to Israeli cinema. That it is their first foray into feature filmmaking, as well as their
country’s first step into the genre, would never be obvious from the assuredness on display in
this story of a game of murder engulfing a young couple, a pair of disaffected cops and a group
of tennis players who stumble into the traps of a vicious killer. Frightening, funny, moving and
often pessimistic, like all good horror films Rabies works as a societal critique while never losing
sight of its reason for being: to shock, scare and surprise. Andrew Simpson

In this thought-provoking and moving
film by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker
Michael King, we follow historian Sir
Martin Gilbert and anti-genocide activist
Stephanie Nyombayire, as they give a
voice to the 13 international diplomats
who saved thousands of Jews during the
Second World War. These “rescuers”
included Princess Alice in Greece,
Selahattin Ulkumen, a Muslim diplomat in
Turkey and Raoul Wallberg of Sweden.
Gilbert, who has written over 80 books,
travels by rail throughout Europe for
35 days with Nyombayire to speak with
descendants of some of the diplomats
and survivors. The pair are united by
personal grief: Gilbert breaks down
as he reflects on the deaths of his
own relatives during the Holocaust.
Nyombayire lost 100 relatives during the
Rwanda atrocities of the 1990s.
In this heartfelt film, which includes
footage from World War Two and
dramatic reenactments, Gilbert
examines the “mystery of goodness”
that motivated diplomats to help others.

salsa tel aviv
‫בוקר טוב אדון פידלמן‬
‫סלסה תל אביב‬
Jacob Fidelman, proprietor of an antique
restoration business in Tel Aviv, is lost.
His partner of forty years has just died,
his business is at death’s door, and his
hot shot son Noah is trying to force him
to sell the shop. But then Fidelman takes
on a new employee, Anton, who discovers
the potential value locked in a decrepid
1882 Steinway piano, and who also starts
to fall for Noah’s wife, eight months
pregnant with Fidelman’s grandson.
A rich, unflinching yet gentle
exploration of unfulfilled fathers and
sons, Restoration builds slowly and
powerfully around a quietly devastating
performance from veteran Israeli actor
Sasson Gabai (last seen at the UKJFF
as the band leader in The Band’s Visit).
Unlike the ancient Steinway, Restoration
doesn’t play a false note, and director
Joseph Madmony proves himself to
be an accomplished and authentic

If a voluptuous Mexican salsa dancer
disguised as a nun falling for a hunky
nerd whilst illegally entering a foreign
country sounds like a recipe for good
old-fashioned romantic comedy fun,
Salsa Tel Aviv delivers in bucket-loads.
Vicky (Mexican TV star Angélica Vale) is a
hard up single mum who travels to Israel
to find ex-boyfriend Beto, the father
of her child, and to earn money to help
her son and mother back home. On the
flight to Tel Aviv she meets soon-to-bemarried scientist Yoni (Uruguayan/Israeli
model-turned-actor Angel Bonani), who
helps her get through customs. In Israel,
Vicki is reunited with Beto and Yoni
returns to his fiancée Dafna, but when
Vicky’s illegal residence is busted by the
cops, there is only one person she can
turn to… Featuring classic romantic
situation comedy, sizzling Latin music,
and a delightfully vivacious leading lady,

sharon amrani: standing silent
remember his name
‫ זכרו את השם‬:‫שרון עמרני‬
Sharon Amrani was a talented young
Israeli director who died in a tragic
accident when he was only 31 years old,
two days before 9/11. Saddened by the
loss of such a young talent, film critic
Yair Raveh decided to create a film
to celebrate and explore who Sharon
Armrani was and what his future as a
filmmaker might have been. Alongside
interviewing family and friends, Yair
discovers a box of scripts written by
Sharon before he died and approaches
fellow filmmakers who studied with
him to bring these scenes to life.
What follows is a moving homage to a
talented young man who didn’t have the
chance to reach his full potential and
raises questions about the relationship
between art and life. For Sharon, the two
were a mirror for each other. Featuring
scenes directed by Joseph Cedar, Dover
Kosashvili, Nir Bergman and Gali Gaon.

So many communities tell themselves
‘it could never happen here’: and then
it does. In echoes of the scandal that
engulfed the Catholic Church, allegations
of child abuse at the hands of prominent
Orthodox rabbis in Baltimore are
unearthed by religious Jewish journalist
Phil Jacobs of the Baltimore Jewish
News. Determined to find out more,
the genteel whistleblower is little
prepared for the avalanche of vitriol and
aggression his inquiries meet, and soon
finds himself ostracized from his own
community for breaking the conspiracy
of silence and risking bringing shame
onto the rabbinate. Stunned, Jacobs
resolves to pursue justice not just in
Baltimore but further afield, in Orthodox
communities from the US to Israel. His
investigations mount up at harrowing
personal cost. A deeply courageous,
heart-wrenching film about one man’s
struggle to stand up for the voiceless,
and bring reconciliation and healing to
his own community. Daniela Boban

The principals and the teachers do their

Every family has their secrets. But for
director Benedicte Orvung, theirs is one
that hid a brutal dark story with grave
historical consequences. Benedicte’s
great uncle was Karl Marthinsen,
the most prominent Norwegian Nazi
collaborator during the Second World
War. This information had been kept a
secret from her until she discovered
who he was by accident at the age of
thirty. What she uncovers is the shocking
and harrowing story of a man her family
felt was best forgotten through shame.
This visually striking film weaves
together personal testimonies with
archived footage, and uses the words
from documents he had written to
paint a shocking picture of the actions
of a man who was a fanatical National
Socialist. Responsible for coordinating
the round up of Norwegian Jews, Karl
Marthinsen was eventually assassinated
by the Resistance. But even in death, he
caused more bloodshed, in the form of
brutal reprisals. Lucy Kaye

IN CONVERSATION
WITH ROBERT POPPER
Join us for an interview with Robert Popper,
the multi-award winning writer, producer,
performer, and creator of numerous hit
TV comedies. Among the shows Robert has
worked on are Peep Show, Look Around You,
South Park, The Inbetweeners and, most
recently, Friday Night Dinner. Popper’s hilarious,
left-of-field take on the Friday night rituals of
a suburban Jewish household brim with cringeinducing , laugh-out-loud moments.
Adam and his brother, Jonny, view Friday night
dinner as a necessary annoyance - necessary
because they get fed, and annoying because,
well, they have to spend the evening with
Mum and Dad. It’s not that Mum and Dad
aren’t wonderful. They really are. But Dad
slugs ketchup straight from the bottle, Mum
is obsessed with Masterchef and Grandma
likes to wear her new bikini around the house.
As for the next generation, there is much
consternation that Jonny’s girlfriend, Alison,
is nothing less than ‘made-up’ and not even
the Internet can sort out a “female” for Adam.
Maybe this is because Adam writes jingles
for toilet roll adverts, and Jonny’s favourite
party trick is to jump out of bin-liners onto
unsuspecting victims.

Ethics in Filmmaking
An Interview with Shlomi Eldar,
director of Precious Life
Shlomi Edlar is a war correspondent and
journalist for Israel’s Channel 10 News who
has covered the Gaza Strip for nearly twenty
years. He has a master’s degree in Middle
East Studies from the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem and wrote the book Eyeless in Gaza.
In 2007 he received the Sokolov Prize, Israel’s
most prestigious media award. Precious Life
(page 14) is his first feature documentary. The
session will be preceded by a screening of
Precious Life.
We live in a time where the majority of
documentary films try to tackle big social
issues in a very didactic and overly journalistic
manner favouring “the issue” above all else.
In this masterclass, Marc Isaacs and Yael
Perlov discuss an alternative way of looking
at reality. Using examples from their own
work and those of other filmmakers that
have inspired them, they will show how the
documentary film can be so much more than a
simple call to arms. What makes a good subject
for a film?; How do you find and work with the
people in your film?; What does it mean to have
a voice as a filmmaker?; How do you turn reality
into something more poetic?

Jewish themes, and supporting and promoting
exploration of Jewish themes in the UK film
industry as a whole.
The event will also mark the official launch of
the Pears Short Film Fund at UK Jewish Film

to ‘speed pitch’ and receive feedback on their
ideas to a film industry panel.
After a drinks reception, the second half of
the event is a ‘Speed Pitching’ session. Each
prospective applicant will be invited in front
of film industry professionals to present a
pitch of their project for a maximum of three
minutes. Once all the ‘speed pitching’ sessions
are complete, applicants will be invited back for
feedback on their pitch.
Tickets: £15
The event will open with the screening of three
important films that the fund has helped
create since its inception five years ago:
Veils (dir. Dan Susman); Schlimazeltov (dir.
Christopher Thomas Allen); and Sidney
Turtelbaum (dir. Tristram Shapeero).
This will be followed by a film industry panel
exploring the role of short films within the film
industry and looking at how they can be used
to maximum effect to either jump-start or
enhance a film career for the long term. There
will also be an opportunity for audience Q&A.

David Perlov:
Pioneer of Israeli
Cinema
Tribute to
Mordecai Richler
“Perlov brought to Israeli film the tradition of
the documentary cinema, fusing theory and
practice. His greatness was in the fact that
his work was at the same time personal and
public, revealing and mysterious, intimate and all
embracing, as all great art is.” Uri Klein, Ha’aretz
David Perlov (1930-2003), was as one of
Israel’s most influential and groundbreaking
documentary filmmakers, yet his striking,
poetic and humane works are rarely seen
internationally. Fortunately for all serious
film lovers out there, Perlov’s films are now
lovingly restored and distributed by his close
family, and we are proud to present three
of his seminal works – the first chapter of
his masterpiece Diary (1973) (see page 20), the
haunting In Jerusalem (1963) (see page 20) and
the brand new Yad Vashem restoration of his
evocative Memories of the Eichmann Trial (1979)
(see page 29).
Perlov’s singular artistic vision has influenced
a whole new generation of filmmakers, not
least his own daughter Yael Perlov, editor
and producer of numerous documentary and
fiction films, and artistic director of joint
Israeli and Palestinian film projects Jerusalem
Moments and Coffee: Between Imagination and
Reality. We are delighted that Yael will join us
as our special guest to present and discuss
her father, David Perlov’s work with our
audiences, in conversation with award-winning
UK documentary director Marc Isaacs.
Mordecai
Richler: The Last
of the Wild Jews
Mordecai Richler (1931- 2001) was one of
Canada’s foremost novelists, a controversial
and prolific journalist, essayist, satirist,
children’s author and scriptwriter. He grew
up in Montreal’s Mile End neighbourhood in a
working-class Jewish family. This setting would
provide fuel for much of his literary work, as
he painted a vivid picture of life as a Jew in
Montreal that alternated between affection
and ridicule, adding his distinctive voice to the
tradition of self-reflective Jewish writing in
North America crafted by contemporaries like
Saul Bellow and Philip Roth.
