General Meeting : Elizabeth Himes with the Cayman Islands
Department of Tourism will be doing the presentation. She will be
showing us the many different points of interest in the islands.
Many of us have not been to the Caymans. They are some of the
premiere dive islands in the Caribbean. This will be a good
opportunity to see what the different islands offer and why the
Caymans should be on your dive agenda.
In November we had our elections. Congratulations to the new
Board of Directors.

Well fellow BADdies this year has been a great year
and I want to thank everyone that has helped make it
such a good time. We had several local trips and
even some international ones that everyone had a
good time. Our flea market was a big success and the
anniversary party was well attended by 40 people. I
want to thank everyone for your support and helpful
assistance at all our club events this year. I want to
wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year to come and that you give your new officers
and board members your support for the coming
year. I had a great time being your President this past
year and wish that next year is an even better year.
Again have a wonderful holiday season with family
and friends.
ARE OPEN TO All, so come on out and join us for our
next meeting TUESDAY, January 8, 2008 at 7:00 PM at
Ryan’s Steak House on Bay Area Blvd. near Hwy 3.
Everyone is encouraged to attend as we appreciate

Friendswood Texas: MARIJO ANN
GRABE was killed in an automobile
accident Tuesday, December 4, 2007.
Born in San Antonio, she was 60 years
old. Her smile and personality brightened
scuba parties and meetings the moment
she walked through the door. Whether she
was snowmobiling in New Mexico, exploring historic castles in Europe, or scuba diving with
whale sharks in Cozumel Mexico, she knew how to enjoy
life and the friends around her.
Ocean Shores , Washington
Don't GO near that water in Ocean
Shores, Washington!! (Ocean Shores is
on the north side of Gray's Harbor)
While the ocean vessel 'Dawn Raider'
was commercial fishing for dogfish, this
Great White was hooked in the mouth but only resisted
slightly for 15 minutes before it came up alongside the
boat to have a look; long enough for one of the crew
members to slip a rope around it's tail !!! 'And that's when
the fight began!!.
Grabe earned her first Open Water certification in 1987.
She became re-certified in 2004 and would go on to earn
her Advanced Open Water, Enriched Air Nitrox, Peak
Performance Buoyancy, Boat Diver, Drift Diver, Deep
Diver, and Fish Identification certifications. She planned
to continue with her Rescue Diver certification this
coming spring earning her the Master Scuba Diver
certification.
The Shark took off towing the 42 foot fishing boat backwards through the water at about 7 Knots. Just like in
JAWS, the boat was taking on water over the stern and the
crew watched in horror as the shark would actually jump
completely out of the water at times.
This went on for an hour
before the shark finally
drowned. She weighed in at
1035 LBS. It is suspected
she followed a weak El
Nino current into local
waters in search of food.
Although mid 60 degree
water is considered ideal for these sharks, the larger ones
can tolerate water in the low 50s.
Grabe is survived by her parents Jack and Geneva
Landon, brother Jack, daughters Hilary and Alison, and
her companion and Lunarfins member John Gorman Jr.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Susan G.
Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
I was privileged to have known her and enjoyed having
her in my scuba classes and having her join me on three
of our Cozumel vacations. Many of the Bay Area Divers
members had become friends with Grabe through scuba
classes and Cozumel vacations.
Texas mulls latest 'ships 2 reefs' flop
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (4 Dec 2007) — A
World War II ship purposely sunk in the Gulf of Mexico
to create an artificial reef has tipped onto its side, blocking
access to the interior for fish and divers.
Two New Prototype Buoys Deployed in
Sanctuary
November
29, 2007--The Geochemical & Environmental
Research Group (GERG) of Texas A&M University recently deployed two new prototype 2.25m discus buoys
on behalf of the Flower Garden Banks Joint Industry Project (JIP). These replace older buoys at locations N and V
of the Texas Automated Buoy System (TABS). Site V is
located within sanctuary boundaries at East Flower Garden Bank while site N is located west of West Flower
Garden Bank.
The Texas Clipper was sunk Nov. 17, after rough waters
delayed the event for several days. The sinking capped
years of problems, including an unplanned sinking near
Beaumont and a $600,000 cleanup of hazardous
chemicals.
State officials were hoping the Clipper would become a
destination for divers and boost local tourism by an
estimated $30 million per year. It was meant to stand
upright so divers and fish could explore the 80-foot high,
473-foot long ship by swimming through decks and
cabins.
Each new buoy is equipped with a full meteorological
package of sensors including two anemometers, as well
as temperature, humidity and barometric pressure sensors.
