September 1, 2016 1 Sitaonair selected by Rolls-Royce to simplify collection of engine health monitoring data MRO GEE’s entertainment in motion strikes agreement with the qyou to distribute premium short form content R G olls-Royce has selected SITAONAIR’s AIRCOM® FlightMessenger to collate and distribute Engine Health Monitoring (EHM) data from its engines, which fly on over 6,000 aircraft and collectively operate for over 100-million hours per year. As part of its 24/7 monitoring service, Rolls-Royce will use the EHM data distributed by FlightMessenger to anticipate any maintenance needs and maximize the operational life of its engines. Rolls-Royce engines intelligently collect and analyse data during flight. This data is then transmitted to Rolls-Royce to support its TotalCare® Service Solutions. Across the engine fleet this data amounts to thousands of messages per day. Rolls-Royce wanted a single system to receive and distribute these messages to its analytics and operations teams. FlightMessenger from SITAONAIR was selected to meet this demand. FlightMessenger is an integral component of a suite of products based on the AIRCOM® Platform, which has been adopted by over 100 airlines to host and process important data points for their flight operations. The service lives alongside AIRCOM® FlightTracker and FlightPlanner. The technology enables the processing of aircraft data in a harmonized, central and secure way, allowing airlines and industry manufacturers to improve operational efficiencies. “Operational engine data provides both specific details to enable us to anticipate any maintenance needs with individual engines, and information that allows us to track performance trends across all our engine types,” said Nick Ward, Rolls-Royce, Product Manager, Pre- 2 September 1, 2016 dictive Equipment Health Management. “With over 400 airline and leasing customers with engines fitted on thousands of aircraft, we have to manage billions of data points on-board per flight. FlightMessenger gives us the ability to receive and distribute transmitted summaries of all that information in the most efficient way. We then apply our analytics and draw insights from this data to provide our customers with informed decisions that improve their operations.” AIRCOM® FlightMessenger is hosted in SITA’s dedicated Air Transport Industry Cloud, a global infrastructure that is connected to 380 airports, 17,000 air transport sites, and 15,000 commercial aircraft. “The aviation industry is facing several challenges relating to data from new-generation aircraft, and this new agreement with Rolls-Royce cements SITAONAIR’s position as a trusted provider capable of supporting every aspect of aircraft connectivity,” said David Lavorel, CEO of SITAONAIR. “By optimising the collection of data, Rolls-Royce and airline engineers will be able to organise the maintenance and servicing of their engines more efficiently to make better use of the aircraft’s time on the ground.” The AIRCOM® Server Platform lies at the heart of SITAONAIR’s connected aircraft strategy. Through the neutral and sensitive data processing platform, SITAONAIR’s integrated applications play a key role in delivering real value through a more effective transmission of aircraft data across multiple fleet types, not only to airlines but the wider aviation industry. In the final two decades of the last millennium, coinciding with the advent of the Internet, rapid advances have been made in front-end aviation, such as dynamic pricing, slicker marketing and online bookings. Low-cost carriers (LCCs) are on the rise, particularly in Asia. Other commercial aircraft – significantly bigger than previous models, and carrying more passengers or cargo – are made of sophisticated composites that help reduce fuel consumption, and fly with smart computers and avionics on board. Despite these advances, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) work is largely stuck in the 20th century. Engineers on the tarmac and in the hangars still inspect aircraft largely in the same way as they did decades ago. A great deal of certification is still done on pen and paper. Parts and logs are checked manually after landing and before take-off. Airlines for America and GEE launch dashboard detailing flight (MRO) operation at U.S. airports A irlines for America (A4A), the industry trade organization for the leading U.S. airlines, today launched a new interactive data dashboard designed to provide the traveling public with access to aggregated flight operations information for U.S. airlines and airports across the country. The dashboard, displayed at airlines.org, was produced in partnership with Global Eagle Entertainment Inc. (GEE) and will provide the current operation status for the top 30 U.S. airports by passenger volume. A4A partnered with GEE to develop this dashboard as a resource for industry partners and others who have a need for aggregated on-time performance data at the airport level or based on current weather patterns. The dashboard, tapping into GEE’s unsurpassed aviation data analytics capabilities, is complete with scrollover maps, real-time flight departures, completions, cancellations, on-time per- www.mrobusinesstoday.com formance and weather conditions at the national and local airport level. This new resource also provides a detailed, rolling 30-day analysis of completed and canceled flights. GEE’s solution will enhance this offering by adding current analysis tools of all U.S. flight operations. “Weather conditions can change quickly and have a significant impact on U.S. airlines and the 2.2 million passengers they serve every day across the globe” noted John Heimlich, Vice President and Chief Economist for Airlines for America. “Airline passengers, airlines and airports now have the most reliable and current information about how potential weather disruptions are impacting travel at a specific airport or across an entire region of the country.” “Global Eagle’s operations solutions and analytics business is built on our ability to provide real-time, in-depth analysis of increasing amounts of big data produced across the aviation industry,” said Bernard Asare, Vice President, Connected Aircraft Solutions for GEE. “This is a powerful and unprecedented approach to data analytics, and we anticipate the A4A dashboard becoming a go-to resource for those in the industry and policy-makers who want to be better armed with information.” September 1, 2016 3 Boeing delivers ah-64e apache training system to South Korea B oeing has delivered to the Republic of Korea an Apache Longbow Crew Trainer that the country’s Army air crews will use to prepare for the AH-64E Apache Guardian helicopters that Boeing begins delivering later this year. The system uses the Apache’s flight software and matured flight and avionics simulation models to create an accurate training environment that increases mission readiness. “The AH-64 Apache helicopter is a critical force multiplier to the U.S. Army and customers around the world,” said Randy Nielson, U.S. Army Apache Program Management Office lead for operator training devices. “The Longbow Crew Trainer is an invaluable asset that will enable Korean Army AH-64 aviators to train and sustain aircraft systems, flight and tactical tasks, increasing their combat effectiveness while reducing risk to the soldier.” Boeing will provide two years of training and maintenance on the system. The delivery completes one portion of South Korea’s $1.6 billion order for 36 Guardian helicopters and 4 September 1, 2016 Boeing prepares to build first four P-8A maritime patrol jets for U.K. Royal Air Force L training and logistical support. “As the original equipment manufacturer, Boeing is uniquely positioned to offer customers the most comprehensive and immersive training systems available for our platforms,” said Dwight Brandon, Apache Training Systems program manager. “Customers know that Boeing can help them train their people and support their aircraft to affordably maintain mission readiness for many years.” In 2016 Boeing celebrates 100 years of pioneering aviation accomplishments and launches its second century as an innovative, customer-focused aerospace technology and capabilities provider, community partner and preferred employer. The rapid installation program will see AeroMod International deploy a consistent cabin experience across Philippine Airlines fleet and implement the systems in record time. This industry leader in avionics and airplane structural modification and repair services commenced installation of the SITAONAIR wireless IFE system on Philippine Airlines’ Airbus A321 fleet in July. Un- www.mrobusinesstoday.com der the program, Philippine Airlines will have one wireless IFE-installed aircraft returned to service every day. “This agreement with a worldwide aircraft connectivity leader such as SITAONAIR capitalizes on our growth to provide operational support to customers around the world,” says AeroMod President Gary Girard. Market analysis by AeroMod reveals that only 13 percent of non-U.S. airlines have wireless IFE fully deployed. Despite this, a recent SITA survey of passengers worldwide showed IFE is now more commonly functionalities and the experience of the company.” The project, completed during the months of June and July, was delivered by the Seabury Solutions project team on time and within budget. “Since the implementation until now, we have received assistance and the necessary support to implement Alkym with high level of professionalism and dedication,” further commented Urioste. “We are pleased to have Amaszonas Lineas Aereas Group among our customers. We know the thorough work and analysis they made to assess the diverse options existing in the market and we are proud to know they chose our solution Alkym,” said Seabury Solutions Vice President Sales LATAM Eng. Manuel Roché. This announcement brings the Alkym customer base to more than 80 aviation clients around the globe. “It is yet another example showcasing how Alkym continually proves to be the “goto” option in the Caribbean, Central and South America,” concluded Roché. consumed via Wi-Fi on a personal device, rather than on the aircraft’s seat-back screen (46% vs 44%, with 10% using both). Additionally, two thirds (65%) of passengers would choose to access it via their own devices if wireless IFE was available. Improving the customer experience is a key driver for commercial airlines, and wireless IFE systems allow a wide range of content to be made available directly to passengers’ personal devices. SITAONAIR’s system delivers reliability and cost savings as well as easy installation and maintenance. Now with AeroMod rapid installations, these products can be rolled out across an entire airline’s fleet in a matter of weeks. All combine to make an especially appealing fit for airlines. “86% of passengers take a smartphone onto a plane and they would prefer to also use them to access IFE. These networks therefore need to be highly robust in order to deliver HD quality video to all passengers,” said David Lavorel, CEO of SITAONAIR. “AeroMod has an enviable track record for installations that are both of exceptional quality and are turned around quickly, getting the planes back in the air as soon as possible.” September 1, 2016 5 China Southern Airlines selects corena Studio to support maintenance authoring for their Airbus A380 fleet F latiron Solutions®, a global provider of technical information management solutions for knowledge-driven industries including aviation, shipping, rail, energy, and defense, announced today the selection of CORENA Studio by China Southern Airlines for authoring of maintenance documentation for their fleet of Airbus A380 aircraft. The Beluga XL programme was launched in November 2014, with this oversized transporter to be utilised for carrying complete sections of Airbus aircraft from different production sites around Europe to the final assembly lines in Toulouse, France and Hamburg, Germany. Based on the airframe of the versatile A330 jetliner, a total of five Beluga XL airlifters are to be built, with the first to enter operational service in mid-2019. They will gradually replace the existing fleet of Beluga ST aircraft, which were www.mrobusinesstoday.com derived from the shorter-fuselage A300. “The Beluga XL is really a patchwork,” said Olivier Delmas, Head of Overall Aircraft Design for the programme, in explaining how elements of two A330 jetliner versions are combined for the Beluga XL. “Geometrically, it is the forward part of an A330-200F freighter, with the aft part of an A330-300 variant.” A large “bubble” airframe section added to the fuselage’s lower portion takes the Beluga XL’s diameter from 5.6 metres for an A330 up to 8.8 metres. The cockpit has been lowered to make space for a main deck with direct cargo loading/unloading capabilities above it. Delmas explained this approach was chosen because no existing aircraft answered Airbus’ criteria for a new-gen- eration transporter, and it allowed the company to create an aircraft capable of handling its requirements based on the proven, robust A330 jetliner family. “We needed the cargo hold to be 45-metres long with an internal diameter of 8 metres, and a payload capability of 50 tonnes,” he added. “These dimensions can accommodate fuselage sections and allow us to transport a pair of A350 XWB wings – something we can’t do today by air.” Increasing the Beluga XL’s volume by 30 percent compared to the existing Beluga ST will make the new airlifter much more cost effective. Further enhancements are to reduce the time needed for unloading, refuelling and reloading the aircraft while making its stopovers at locations across the Airbus production network.
