Pittsburgh has called Saint Vincent College its “summer home” since 1966. Through their first three decades in the NFL, the Steelers held their training camps at a variety of locations, as far east as New England and as far west as Wisconsin. In 1966, for the third straight summer, training camp for the Steelers was at the University of Rhode Island. The team was there through the first four weeks of a five-game preseason schedule. Then, after a loss in Green Bay to Vince Lombardi’s Packers, Coach Bill Austin wanted the team closer to Pittsburgh because the 1966 regular season was due to open with a home game against the New York Giants on Sept. 11. With no practice fields of their own at the time, the Steelers turned to Saint Vincent College. The team arrived in Latrobe on Aug. 29 and spent a couple of weeks on campus going through final preparations for the 1966 regular season. In 1967, the Steelers conducted their entire training camp at Saint Vincent College. CAMPING OUT The Steelers concluded their 51st consecutive year of preseason training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa. Pittsburgh’s 51-year tenure at the college is tied with the Minnesota Vikings (Mankato, Minn.), for second in the NFL for training camp longevity. Only the Green Pay Packers, who have held their preseason camp at St. Norbert College in DePere, Wisc., have maintained a longer summer home for 59 years. Rk. 1. T2. GREENE AND DUNGY TO THE HALL OF FAME Former Steelers linebacker Kevin Greene, and safety and defensive coordinator Tony Dungy were elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2016, and were enshrined on Saturday, August 6, at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. Greene played in 228 games over the course of 15 seasons for the Los Angeles Rams (1985-92), the Pittsburgh Steelers (1993-95), the Carolina Panthers (1996, 1998-99) and the San Francisco 49ers (1997). He was a three-time first-team All-Pro (1989, 1994 and 1996) and a five-time Pro Bowler (1989, 199496 and 1998). Greene ranks third all-time in NFL history with 160.0 sacks. He recorded double-digit sacks in a single season 10 times, and he led the NFL in sacks twice (1994 and 1996). He was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1990s. As a member of the Steelers, Greene recorded 35.5 sacks in three seasons. His 35.5 sacks in a three-year span are the second-most sacks in any three-year span in Steelers’ history. Dungy played for the Steelers from 1977-78, and was a member of the team’s Super Bowl XXIII team. He returned to Pittsburgh in 1981 as the team’s defensive backs coach, before being elevated to defensive coordinator in 1984. At the time, he was the NFL’s youngest defensive coordinator. 2016 SCHEDULE NOTES The Steelers will appear in four nationally televised primetime games, including the first Monday Night Football game of the NFL’s 2016 regular season, and on Thanksgiving in 2016. The Steelers dominated time of possession for the first quarter and a half but only managed to put six points on the board thanks to K Shaun Suisham’s 49 and 31-yard makes. Midway through the second quarter, Brees connected with TE Benjamin Watson for a 15-yard touchdown. And with less than one minute remaining in the half, Brees threw a four-yard touchdown pass to FB Erik Lorig to give the Saints a 14-6 lead heading into the break. New Orleans scored on their first drive of the second half as Brees found WR Nick Toon for an 11-yard touchdown. Pittsburgh’s ensuing drive ended with a one-yard touchdown run by RB Le’Veon Bell to cut the Saints’ lead 21-13. Bell recorded a career-best 159 receiving yards and totaled a career-high 254 yards from scrimmage. But on the Saints’ next possession, Brees threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to WR Kenny Stills to give New Orleans a 28-13 advantage at the end of the third quarter. Suisham connected on a 47-yarder early in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 28-16. But Brees led his team right down the field and threw a three-yard touchdown pass to WR Marques Colston to give New Orleans a 35-16 lead. QB Ben Roethlisberger connected with WR Antonio Brown on a four-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter, and then the two connected again on a three-yard score as time expired.
