Curling hits the streets
Summer was busy and fall
events are well under way in
Grande Prairie. There is no
time like the present to get
people talking about curling!
Volunteers and event sponsors
are spreading the word about
the Home Hardware Canada
Cup presented by Meridian
Manufacturing and the Scotties
Tournament of Hearts.
2DayFM celebrated their oneyear anniversary on July 14th
with a block party. They had a
BBQ, photobooth, giant Jenga
and street curling on hand in
celebration. The street curling
debut was a hit and even saw
Curling Canada staff go head
to head with 2DayFM staff.
Battle of the media: @Q99liveFM vs @BigCountry931. Taylor wins 2-1! #curling
#CanCup #Scotties #GPAB. Follow us on twitter for live events @CurlingCanada.

Later that week, we brought street curling to the
Grande Prairie Street Performers Festival. Young
and old alike enjoyed trying their hand at curling.
The booth was well attended all weekend, and
we saw a battle of the media partners when
Big Country 93.1 challenged Q99 to a draw to
the button competition! Our @CurlingCanada
twitter feed posted the action live.
With curling having such strong roots on the East
Coast, what better place to promote the Home
Hardware Canada Cup presented by Meridian
Manufacturing and the Scotties Tournament
of Hearts than at the East Coast Garden Party.
People got to rock out to a fabulous line up
of musicians and hear about the great curling
events coming to town! – Continued on page 3

FACILITIES VICE-CHAIR
Bain looking forward to elite
curlers going to battle
Michael Bain, Chair of Facilities, was born in Grande Prairie and resided
there until the age of ten before his family moved to Valemount, British
Columbia. The family spent eight years in Valemount before moving back
to Grande Prairie and making it their home since then.
Michael spent 34 years working in the telecommunications industry
before trying out freedom 55 in 2002. He quickly learned he just was
not ready for retirement so went back into the employment market –
driving a delivery truck until 2008. Now he spends time golfing, curling,
woodworking and traveling Canada, taking in this beautiful country from
coast to coast with his wife of 46 years, Wilma. They have three children
and 5 grandchildren.
MICHAEL BAIN
Vice-Chair Facilities
Michael started curling at age 14 and hasn’t stopped since. He has been to the Master’s Provincials
and coached junior curling for 12 years. He was on the board of the Grande Prairie Curling Centre for
6 years and has been part of host committee’s for provincial and national curling events.
The experience and expertise Michael brings to the position of Vice-Chair of Facilities will not be
wasted and the Home Hardware Canada Cup of Curling presented by Meridian Manufacturing and
the Scotties Tournament of Hearts will benefit from his involvement. When asked about the upcoming
curling events, Michael says, “it will be exciting to see Canada’s elite curling teams do battle at
Revolution Place in Grande Prairie.”
Daily Herald Tribune creates
new logo for events
The Daily Herald Tribune,
Media Partner for the Home
Hardware Canada Cup of
Curling presented by Meridian
Manufacturing and the Scotties
Tournament of Hearts, have
taken their event partnership to
a whole new level! The paper has developed a brand new logo,
with a strong curling theme, to use for the upcoming Season of
Champions events – they’re truly “living it live”!

Curling meets rodeo
at the Dawson Creek
Exhibition
The 93rd annual Dawson Creek Exhibition & Stampede took place
from August 4 to August 9 and curling was well represented. Dawson
Creek Curling Club partnered with the Home Hardware Canada Cup
presented by Meridian Manufacturing and the Scotties Tournament
of Hearts to promote their curling club and both events ticket sales.
Cowboys and cowgirls, young and old, had the chance to try their hand
at curling and enter a draw for an autographed Ferbey Four book and a
Dawson Creek Curling Club membership.
The Dawson Creek Curling Club lost their ice plant just four short
weeks into the curling season last year so it was a great opportunity for
the club to let locals know that they would be up and running for the
2015-2016 season. The booth was busy the whole time and it would
not have been nearly as successful without the help of the amazing
volunteers from the DC Curling Club and Club Manager, Jeff Ginter.
Royalty even graced the booth on Sunday when Miss Rodeo Canada
and other rodeo queens tried their hand at curling and learned a little
bit about the game!

Q99’s Shoot for the
Win a big success
08 09
SUMMER
EDITION
Q99 ran online and on-air contests the last week
of July for listeners to have a chance to qualify
for a “Shoot for the Win” contest. Qualifiers
had to correctly answer a trivia question about
the sport of curling or the history of the Home
Hardware Canada Cup.
Twelve qualifiers came out to Windsor Ford, an
official vehicle supplier for the Home Hardware
Canada Cup, on Friday, July 31st for the chance
to win two full event passes to the event taking
place in Revolution Place this December.
Contestants had one chance to shoot their rock
closest to the button, using the rocks and rings
rocks on the street curling game.
They came, they shot and there was a winner!
Shirlee Keown, from Rycroft, AB was the
lucky winner with a shot right on the button. A
huge curling fan, she was pushed to tears of
excitement. All contestants walked away with a
goody bag of event swag.

for the Win” championship, hosted by Windsor Ford. Photo on the right: Mallory Donahue from
Curling Canada and Landon, Nicholas from Q99 present a pair of full event ticket packages for
the Home Hardware Canada Cup presented by Meridian Manufacturing to Shirlee
Thank you to our Media Partner and
Official Vehicle Supplier for a successful contest
Congratulations Shirlee, we look forward to
seeing you in December at the Revolution Place!
A big thanks goes out to Q99 for running such a
fun and successful contest and to Windsor Ford
for letting curling hit the floor of their showroom!
