There is a distinction - and a proud one - not only in our food, our history, our industry and accomplishments - but even in our manner of speech. It is a recognizable sign of our identity. It points to where we belong, from whence we came, and even, in some instances, to the way in which we see the world. There are now generations of young men for whom a diploma from Holy Ghost Prep is a source of singular pride. They are classics scholars, architects, leaders of business and government, and priests. They are scattered throughout the world, in places and occupations they never imagined as teenagers. They are young and old, married and single, famous and happily modest. And they share a pride in their alma mater that is both fierce and humbling. Holy Ghost Prep was a second home to so many of us. It was a place where beloved teachers discussed books with us that influenced our life decisions, professional and personal. We formed friendships there that we carry forever. And we learned deep goodness, respect, and integrity of life. We are marked by the institution – and we belong there in the most profound ways. When someone meets a graduate of Holy Ghost Prep, the accent may not be immediately recognizable, but the quality of soul surely is! To the members of the Holy Ghost Prep’s Parent organizations, the Mothers’ Guild and Fathers’ Association, Alumni and Alumni Parents, faculty, staff, and friends of Holy Ghost Prep, thank you for all that you do and have done for this remarkable institution. In One Heart and One Mind, Father James P. McCloskey, C.S.Sp. ‘70 President More on Father James P. McCloskey, C.S.Sp. ‘70 ... Father James P. McCloskey, C.S.Sp. ‘70 first served at Holy Ghost Preparatory School as Headmaster and then President from 1990 until 2002, when he was appointed Vice President for University Relations at Duquesne University. In 2003, he was elected Provincial Superior of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit. He had served in that post for one year when he was elected to the General Council of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit in Rome, the worldwide headquarters of the Congregation, with special responsibility in the area of education. In 2009, Fr. McCloskey was named the first Vice President of Mission and Identity at Duquesne University. Father McCloskey returned as President of Holy Ghost Prep in July 2013. 4 McCloskey family photo - Pictured at Duquesne University are (l-r): nephew Joseph Esposito `96, Father McCloskey `70, sister Pat Esposito, brother-in-law Joseph Esposito, Jenny Esposito (holding daughter Samantha) and her husband James Esposito `97, nephew of Fr. HGP BOARD OF TRUSTEES Tony Geonnotti ‘76 New Trustee Chair Photo: Lisa Varley Tony Geonnotti `76 HGP Taps Tony Geonnotti ’76 As Trustee Chair Tony Geonnotti, a proud 1976 graduate of Holy Ghost Prep, was installed as Chair of the HGP Board of Trustees at the start of the School’s current fiscal year, replacing Sister Mary Dacey, whose term expired June 30. The father of three other Holy Ghost alums, as well as a daughter who attended Archbishop Wood, Geonnotti also recently began a second three-year term on the Board. Most recently, he has chaired the Enrollment Committee. Since September of 2013, he is employed as Director of Sales for Apex Contractors, LLC, a position he assumed following eight years in a variety of positions at DeLuca Homes, including three years as Director of Operations. “Holy Ghost has been, and will continue to be a significant part of my life,” said Geonnotti. “In all honesty, I have never actually left HGP since graduating in 1976. The solid moral foundation and Christian character that I gained during my association with the School – first as a student and later in various positions of leadership – successfully prepared me professionally and personally.” As head of the governing body that is charged with charting and managing the direction and growth of Holy Ghost Prep in today’s competitive academic and economic climate, he takes a comprehensive approach to his new duties. “The most important thing I will endeavor to accomplish as Trustee Chair is to preserve and enhance the quality, reputation and core values that shape Holy Ghost Prep,” he asserts. “We cannot sacrifice the Spiritan traditions that the School represents, as well as the quality of the preparation HGP’s young men receive before being sent out into the world each year.” “I am fortunate to be associated with a group of Trustees, school leaders, faculty and staff that share so much of their time, talent and treasures to ensure the health and vitality of Holy Ghost Prep for years to come.” Almost routinely, Geonnotti recalls the difference his own student experience has made on his life to this day. “For years after graduation, I was still able to walk through the doors of Cornwells and always found teachers, coaches and support staff who welcomed me with open arms and provided me with advice that has served me well, I believe, to this day,” he reflects. “One Heart and One Mind rings through each and every hall and in every classroom of the School – and everyone associated with Holy Ghost Prep has had an influence on my life and on what I have become – and for me that has made all the difference.” Tony and wife Cynthia, who reside in Langhorne, PA, are the parents of a daughter, Kristina Lynn, as well as sons Anthony `99, Justin `04, and Alexander `08. 5 HGP DONORS & SCHOLARS PRESIDENT’S RECEPTION HGP Reception Celebrates Private Support for Student Scholarships Nearly a hundred members of the Holy Ghost Prep community joined together in Founders’ Hall on October 30 as the School recognized private philanthropic support at the inaugural President’s Reception for Donors and Scholars. “You have made it possible for me to attend HGP, an opportunity that otherwise may not have been probable without your generosity. I look forward to giving back to the school/community so other boys like me can have a chance.” – Zamir Guy `18 Spiritan Scholarship Fund recipient “I sincerely thank you for your generosity. I will continue to do my best to uphold the values of Holy Ghost Prep.” – Tyler Joyce `16 Father McGovern Scholarship recipient “Without your help, I would not be able to attend such an excellent school. I, along with many others, greatly appreciate all you have done.” – Alex Deola `16 Spiritan Scholarship Fund recipient “This scholarship helped me know and realize that Holy Ghost Prep is the school for me.” – John Wisniewski `17 Anthony Marchione Music Scholarship recipient “I truly believe that it was Holy Ghost Prep and the principles behind its teaching and guidance that gave me the tools to uphold the ideals of the Thomas F. Flynn Memorial Scholarship.” – Ryan Malloy `15 Thomas F. Flynn Memorial Scholarship recipient Among the students in attendance were recipients of many of the funds made possible by generous private contributions from alumni, parents, faculty and friends. For most, it was a first-time opportunity for donors to meet current HGP students who have benefitted most from charitable giving. To consider or to make a gift in support of the Holy Ghost Fund, which largely underwrites scholarship needs, contact Alexis Gettings, Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Engagement, at 215-639-2102, ext. 204 or via email (agettings@holyghostprep.org). Currently, approximately one-third of HGP students receive some form of scholarship funding, amounting in grants in excess of $1 million. McMullen Family Honored for Lead Gift In support of Student Lounge Renovation Holy Ghost Preparatory School honored Diane and Jeffrey McMullen of Newtown, PA, in recognition of their lead gift that aided an extensive renovation of the HGP Student Lounge, a space which dates back to the completed construction of the school in 1910. The room was originally called the “Trunk Room” because it housed the luggage of students who attended Holy Ghost Prep when it was a seminary for approximately a half century. Over the years, the space has become the student locker room and was transformed into a lounge space thanks to the McMullen’s gift. Pictured (L-R) are Father James McCloskey, C.S.Sp. `70, President of Holy Ghost Prep, Connor McMullen `13, Diane McMullen, Jeffrey McMullen and Alex McMullen `11. Connor currently attends Syracuse University as a sophomore, while Alex is a senior at Villanova University. Inducted into the Holy Ghost Prep Athletics Hall of Fame on January 31st, 2015 as a multi-sport student-athlete, Scheetz holds a BA from Bucknell University, where he graduated Cum Laude in 2002, as well as a J.D. from Temple University in 2007. In making the announcement, HGP Executive Director of Advancement Peter Manetas noted Scheetz’ active participation and leadership in recent months as a steering committee met to expand the Alumni Board’s role among the School’s alumni base of approximately 4000 graduates. Dating back to his own scholastic days at Holy Ghost Prep, Larry has exhibited a kind of leadership and collaborative approach to his volunteer role that accentuates service. Named a 2014 Bucks County “Forty Under 40” awardee, Scheetz was recognized among those in the county who have distinguished themselves early in their careers in business, education and community service. Also this year, he was named a Pennsylvania Rising Star in personal injury litigation, a recognition reserved for the top 2.5 percent of up-and-coming lawyers in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. “I know everyone at Holy Ghost joins me in expressing our profound appreciation for the leadership and service provided to the Alumni Board the past two years by Grant Holdren `99 and Rob Keddie `87, who served as co-chairs and helped direct efforts among fellow graduates to provide greater support for the School,” said Scheetz. “Their guidance and input have proven invaluable to me and to others.” He is the son of Lawrence and Mary Scheetz of Newtown, PA and works alongside his father at the Richboro firm that carries the family name. “I had a phenomenal HGP experience,” said Scheetz. “The students, teachers, coaches and staff created a safe and supportive environment which permitted each of us to take chances and excel as students and as young men. This sense of community and friendships at Holy Ghost allowed me to focus on my school work, athletics and service.” “I see our mission, in large part, to cultivate a closeknit and genuine relationship between Holy Ghost Prep and its alumni in ‘One Heart and One Mind,” he noted. Scheetz added that the Alumni Association seeks to foster pride, loyalty, and a life-long connection to Holy Ghost by: “My personal goal for the Holy Ghost Prep Alumni Association is to increase alumni giving participation while recreating a sense of pride and community that we all experienced during our years at Holy Ghost.” Scheetz, who along with wife Kathleen and twins Madelyn and Lawrence III (born last May 24) , reside in Doylestown, PA, is owner/partner of the Law Offices of Williams & Scheetz of Richboro, PA, a community-based law practice that offers comprehensive services to clients. Prior to joining his current firm, he was an associate with Brinker Biddle & Reath LLP of Philadelphia. 8 HGP ADVANCEMENT NEWS, WINTER 2014-15 In assuming his role as President of the Holy Ghost Prep Alumni Board and Alumni Association, Larry Scheetz has identified four goals that will prove prominent in shaping HGP Alumni community relationships. Coordinating programs and events for alumni, students, parents and friends of HGP Encouraging alumni to contribute their time, talent and financial support Communicating the needs, news and accomplishments of Holy Ghost Prep and its alumni Providing opportunities for volunteerism, professional association, career development and fellowship among alumni HGP FOCUS ON VOLUNTEERS (CONTINUED) ... Mary Creekmore - Mothers’ Guild President Mary Creekmore, k who along with husband Jay are the parents of Matt, a senior and starter for this year’s PIAA champion soccer team, is serving as the President of Holy Ghost Prep’s Mothers’ Guild as it nears its 50th anniversary in support of the School and the young men who have passed through its doors. Jay is also serving as Vice President of the Fathers’ Association this year. Retired from E.I. du Pont, where she served in several management roles in information technology, marketing and supply chain management, Mrs. Creekmore is a Cornell University alumna. She and her family, which also includes son Jay and daughter Amy and son-in-law Joe, reside in Newtown. How did you come to be involved with the Mothers’ Guild? “At first, I volunteered as a way to learn about the school from other (HGP) moms,” she said when reflecting on how she came to be involved with the Mothers’ Guild. “As I got more involved, I met so many special, giving and wonderful moms that it was hard not to get involved.” How would you describe your own son’s experience at HGP? “HGP was the only high school Matt wanted to attend. He has grown so much as an individual. The teachers and administration stress that students take responsibility for their own success, but they are also there to help students be successful. Matt has grown to be a gentleman, to respect himself and to respect his individuality. I don’t know if he would have gotten this in another environment.” What h do d you feel is the greatest impact provided by the Mothers’ Guild? The Mothers’ Guild’s greatest impact is the sense of community that the mothers build together as we provide the hospitality services for so many of the functions at the School. Of course, the annual Craft Show provides significant monetary support to HGP, but the event is also a way to showcase our school community to the greater Bucks County community. The Mothers’ Guild is a treasure.” Photo: Lisa Varley Mary Creekmore Mothers’ Guild President 2014-15 To date, can you describe a key lasting memory of your experience at Holy Ghost Prep? “I have to say one of the things I LOVED was to see the HGP fan section singing the National Anthem on the PCN broadcast of the last soccer game. I know the school spirit and support of the soccer team had an impression on Matt and helped him and the team to succeed. Looking at the boys during that event, I could see the range (reflected) of the young freshmen to the senior leaders – all are unique and so special.” Don Varley, Jr. - Fathers’ Association President Don Varley, Jr. is currently serving as President of Holy Ghost Prep’s Fathers’ Association. He and his wife, Lisa, are the parents of Michael, currently a junior at HGP, and an older daughter, Alexandra, a sophomore at Penn State. Mr. Varley is director of information technology for the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania while Lisa is the owner of Lisa Varley Photography (several of her photos are included in this newsletter). Why do you volunteer at the level you do? “It is important to lead by example. The Fathers’ Association is a group of dedicated Dads who are positive role models for all the boys. As a group, we work tirelessly behind the scenes to assist and to make a difference at HGP.” How has the Fathers’ Association made a difference, in your opinion? “Throughout the entire school year, the Fathers’ Association has a positive impact on the HGP Community. It plays a key role in keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes. Just some of the activities, for instance, include: The Annual Homecoming/Welcome Back to School Barbeque Providing traffic control at various special events such as school dances, the craft fair, basketball games, and graduation The Annual Chapel Clean-up, in preparation for the October Open House and November Junior Ring Mass Christmas Blessings, which collects gifts and dinners donated by the HGP community for hundreds of needy families Photo: Lisa Varley Don Varley, Jr. Fathers’ Association President 2014-15 Providing light maintenance and working closely with students at nearby Libertae, which serves to empower women and their families through comprehensive treatment programs that support healthy communities An annual ski trip A spring Communion Breakfast, which also seeks to honor faculty and staff at Holy Ghost Prep Planting flowers in preparation for graduation. How would you describe your own son’s experience at HGP? “Choosing Holy Ghost was the best decision we ever made for our son, Michael. The shy young boy who started as a freshman at HGP is now a confident, poised young man in his junior year. At Ghost, there is a strong sense of brotherhood which has enabled him to reach out of his comfort zone and try new things. He has set various goals for himself and has proudly achieved them with the support and encouragement of his teachers and coaches. He is a student, an artist, an athlete, and a leader in his class and is accepted by his peers and teachers.” HGP ADVANCEMENT NEWS, WINTER 2014-15 9 HGP EITC PROGRAM “The EITC program allows me to donate to my alma mater by assigning my PA state tax liability to the scholarship program at Holy Ghost Prep. It is a great way to support the school that has given me the opportunity to give back, and at the same time, use tax dollars that I allocate to the cause I desire.” - Russ Macaluso `76 “EITC is a win-win for Holy Ghost Prep and the participating company. The business is able to direct a substantial portion of its state tax obligation to support the School – as well as other eligible schools – in order to advance their mission.” - Michael Smith `94 EITC Program Offers Key Support for Holy Ghost Prep Since 2003, Holy Ghost Prep has seen generous support from many community businesses through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC). The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania offers a unique opportunity for businesses in the state to reduce tax liability by contributing to registered scholarship organizations. Businesses apply through the state to receive up to a 75% tax credit on up to $750,000 annually. Two-year commitments receive a 90% tax reduction up to a maximum of $750,000 each year. The businesses that participate in EITC at Holy Ghost get the chance to give back directly to their community and support an organization that aspires to form young men morally, intellectually, and spiritually. EITC funds go directly to scholarship support to offset the cost of tuition for eligible students. A special thanks to our 2014 and 2015 EITC donors to date for all of their support! Teddy Kawoczka scored the “equalizer” on a deflection of a restart kick by Michael Kirby. Just minutes later in the first half, Kirby capitalized on a penalty kick. Following a key save moments before in the mouth of the HGP goal by defender Teddy Barbie, Joe Braun blasted a shot by the Lancaster Mennonite goalie with about 15 minutes left to seal the victory. Goalie Matt Lingerman was once again outstanding in goal, turning back seven of eight shots. J OH N B UE TTLE R ‘64 Student, coach, director, guidance counselor, for a brief period – in fact – he was once acting headmaster, and all here at Holy Ghost Prep. The first alumnus of HGP to join the faculty fulltime, Mr. Buettler is a trendsetter. Of course, one cannot speak of him without reference to two of his most important roles – father to Jeff, Mark, Stephen and John, all alumni of Holy Ghost. And, of course, as husband of more than 40 years to Arlene. He is an intellect, an artist, and a leader. But the mantle of teacher is the one that most matters to him, and to us. A few years ago while being honored by the Fathers’ Association, Mr. Buettler was described as a light switch. He is a teacher who brings light and life to words on the page and the subject at hand. This is quite an achievement for a man, who some years ago and fresh out of college, when asked by Father Francis Hanley if he would like to teach English at Holy Ghost, told Arlene “we would do it for two years, then move on.” On behalf of thousands of men who have passed through HGP in those 40+ years, let me say “thank goodness those plans fell through”. I was a gangly, eager freshman on the Forensics team, barely a few months on campus, and Mr. Buettler was teaching, chairing the religion department COACH 16 TEACHER and with Mrs. Buettler, raising four young boys at home. Yet he spent hours with me each week as I wrote and rewrote speeches, practiced my delivery over and over again and hounded him with my standard pre-tournament interrogatories: “So, how do you think I’ll do??? Do you think I can place? Could I win?” His response was consistent, gentle and clear and it is something I have held on to ever since those late afternoons in his second floor classroom. “It doesn’t matter,” he would say. “Whether you collect a shelf full of trophies or not a one, it isn’t about winning, it is about doing your best.” His message was clear then, and it is clear today, the accomplishment, the dignity, the success lie in the effort, not the outcome. Mr. Buettler, you are the teacher OF a lifetime and the teacher FOR a lifetime. - Lawrence Clark, Jr. `89 (Excerpt from Larry’s introduction of Mr. Buettler as recipient of HGP’s Anima Una Award at the 2010 HGP Anniversary Gala).
