29 January - 9 February 2017
Iguazu Falls from the Argentinian side
Arrive in Rio with its iconic setting and transfer
to your hotel in Copacabana to settle in and
spend your first night.
Rio de Janeiro is effortlessly spectacular. Spend
your first morning taking in its breathtaking
views, starting with a train ride to Corcavado
Mountain, where the statue of Christ the
Redeemer towers over the city. After lunch take
the cable car to Morro da Urca, the first stage
en route to Sugar Loaf Mountain, to take a
pleasant walk to the second stage with a superb
panorama of Guanabara Bay, Copacabana and
the surrounding area. In the evening enjoy a
welcome dinner at the atmospheric and lively
Rio Scenarium.
Fly to Iguazu Falls in Argentina the next
morning and transfer to the Panorama Hotel.
Spend the rest of the day at leisure and have
dinner at the hotel.
Iguazu Falls straddle the border between
Brazil and Argentina and both sides provide
spectacular - and very different - perspectives.
Next morning delegates will visit the dental
faculty at the State University of Rio de Janeiro
for lectures (see itinerary for details of talks).
A partner programme will take in a tour of
historic Rio, including the sumptuous São Bento
Benedictine Monastery, Rua de Mercado and the
Sambadrome, where Carnival takes place every
February. The group will rejoin after lunch to see
the Olympic legacy in Rio.
Iconic Copacabana Beach, walking distance from your hotel
upmarket Palermo, where the sights include
Government House, Congress and Recoleta
Cemetery, where the most illustrious Porteños
are buried, including Evita Peron.
‘Devil’s Throat’, Iguazu Falls
The Falls are simply astounding, with hundreds
of thundering cascades spanning nearly 3km in
length. Spend the first day on the Argentinian
side, which is in the Iguazu National Park. Here
you can walk amongst the cascades within
lush rainforest, with hundreds of butterflies
fluttering in the mist, and visit the wildlife
refuge and hummingbird sanctuary.
The next day begins with a visit to a dental
hospital and lectures and a partner programme
to Palermo Soho. In a city replete with design
and retail, this area is renowned for both and is
a beautiful area to wander around. Rejoin at the
hotel later in the day before an optional Dine
Around at local restaurants in the evening.
The next morning is at leisure to enjoy BA at
your own pace or to take optional excursions to
Colonia in Uruguay, the Tigre Delta where the
roads are waterways, or to see a game of the
national sport – polo. In the evening watch a
tango show with a farewell dinner.
The following day transfer to the airport, or take
the extension to Patagonia.
Visit the Brazilian side the following day for the
dramatic spectacle of ‘Devil’s Throat’. Here you
can stand on a lookout platform perched above
the majestic torrent of water, watching it plunge
into invisible depths. The roar of the water is
overwhelming and the ‘smoke’ from the cascade
can be seen several kilometres away. Return
to the hotel for afternoon lectures or time at
leisure.
Fly to Buenos Aires next morning and transfer
to the Hotel Emperador. Spend the rest of the
day at leisure and walk to nearby Piegari for
dinner, with the option to continue wine tasting
afterwards at Gran Bar Danzon in Recoleta.
Buenos Aires is elegant, stylish, edgy and
sensuous all at the same time. It often looks like
Europe, and its denizens would be at home in
the most stylish of Europe’s cities, but it has its
own melancholic Latin American twist. Immerse
yourself into BA life as the locals do with a
morning coffee at Café Tortoni before visiting
the famous antiques market at San Telmo and
the multi-coloured artist quarter of La Boca.
In the afternoon visit the parks and gardens of

8 Feb (Wed) Buenos Aires / Patagonia
Nothing quite prepares the first time visitor for
the incredible size, colour and sound of the rare
advancing Perito Moreno Glacier. Vast chunks of
ice continually crack off the enormous blue glacier
with a deafening crash into the waters below.
This natural phenomenon is a thunderous 200foot high and three mile wide river of constantly
moving and exploding ice. There are a number of
wooden catwalks built directly above the glacier
where you can safely view and photograph the
earth-shattering display below. After nature’s
display of high drama, take a cruise up to the
Glacier and return mid afternoon.
9 Feb (Thurs)Patagonia
The next day, it’s back to the wonderful,
otherworldly land of the glaciers with a full
day tour to the Upsala Glacier, a huge chunk
of ice measuring thirty seven miles long and
nearly three miles wide in parts. Drive along the
southern edge of Lago Argentino and board a
catamaran that will take you past vast vivid blue
gigantic icebergs on the way to the magnificent
Upsala Glacier. Return late afternoon.
