Philanthropist & Holocaust Survivor
Fifteen years ago our founder, Henri Landwirth, sat in a Jacksonville, Florida
homeless shelter with a group of men struggling to turn their lives around.
Henri asked the question, “How can I help?” The simple response of one
man, “Sir, we need underwear”, began a journey that would become Dignity
U Wear. Almost immediately, Henri began buying new underwear, storing
the merchandise in his garage and distributing to those in need. Within
months, Dignity U Wear was founded with the mission to “positively impact
the lives of children and their families in need by providing brand new
clothing”.
Today, the mission of Dignity U Wear has not changed but the operating
model has evolved. We moved out of the garage and now operate from a
newly renovated, energy efficient warehouse. We distribute almost $1M
in new clothing every month—underwear is a critical item but we strive to
meet all clothing needs. We expanded our distribution beyond Jacksonville
and now serve almost every state in the country. We coordinate our
efforts with over 300 non-profit and social service agencies to make sure
their clients have access to new clothes that meet their needs.
Henri set the stage for collaborative relationships when he founded Dignity
U Wear in 2000. Today we work with manufacturers, retailers,
transportation service providers, non-profit organizations and school
districts to procure clothing, match it to specific needs and deliver it
efficiently. Dignity U Wear is a unique provider in the supply chain of many
non-profit organizations. In fifteen years, we’ve gone from listening to the
need of one homeless man in Jacksonville, Florida to serving over 820,000
individuals nationwide. The best part is—we’re just getting started.

“I started Dignity U Wear because I was in the concentration camps
for five years with no clothes,” says Landwirth. “After I left the camps,
I was 18 years old and I was homeless. And I promised myself that
one day, God willing, I would be able to help other people not to
suffer as much as I did.”

Over 8,000 volunteer hours were donated by individuals, churches, corporations,

WHO WE SERVE
Dignity U Wear coordinated 461 deliveries of new
clothing to 139 social service agencies across 43 states.
We focused on agencies serving veterans in transition, women
and girls in crisis, school children, families living in poverty,
health and elder care and disaster relief.
Process improvement and strategic agency collaboration enable
Dignity to serve more individuals. In 2014 we doubled our
impact serving over 220,000 individuals. Agencies receive
clothing from Dignity free of charge. This enables Dignity
agencies to reallocate scarce budget dollars, previously spent
on the purchase of basic clothing, to other essential services.
