Rescued Dogs Know

When taking in a new foster I find it
impossible to not treat each dog like
my own. They come awash in the
stench and shock of the shelter
hobbled by the enormous weight of
their overpowering needs. First they
need a safe place, followed by a bath, food and maybe vet
visits. These are easily met; rehab is next and not as
easy.
Each dog has its’ own personality and some wear it
proudly from the start, some it takes time to coax out and
sadly, some have endured such hardship we may never
see their personality as it was meant to be. These we
nurture with love and compassion hoping we can help
them find their way.
Some find themselves “undesirable” and as one such
“undesirable” melts into my arms I can’t help but feel he is
the most desirable of all. His only wish being that he
belongs and it seems like such a simple wish. But this one

thing defines his world and his life. A life lived fervently
through simply belonging has profoundly impacted the
measure of my own life. Needless to say, his stay has
been therapeutic for us both.
Many breeze through our home to new forever families
so quickly we hardly get to know them. But, when years
later you unexpectedly see them and they come running
to you in a spasm of unbridled joy you are humbled,
humbled to realize you have such a place in their lives.
Whew….! Somewhat shaken I can only think “rescued
dogs know”. Rescued dogs know that someone cared
enough to give them another chance. Rescued dogs know
someone took the time to understand their personality and
their needs. Rescued dogs know someone took the time
to show them there is love in the world. Rescued dogs
know someone took the time to find their perfect forever
family. Rescued dogs know me, and for me this knowing
defines my life. This is my wish, that all abandoned,
abused and cast off dogs come to have this knowing in
their lives, a simple wish, really, don’t you think? One
easily fulfilled if we all work together.

Critter Magazine™ is an animal adoption publication dedicated to
improving the quality of life for animals through education, support of spay/
neuter efforts and encouraging responsible pet ownership, as well as helping
to find loving homes for animals in need. Although the majority of the animals
profiled are dogs and cats, we will feature any animal that is in need
of adoption. We publish each month and distribute throughout Horry and
Georgetown counties. Advertising and editorial deadline is the 15 th of the
month for the following month’s issue. We welcome letters to the editor,
comments and suggestions, as well as informative articles and stories which
are relevant to our goals.
Subscriptions are available for $24 per year.
Critter Magazine cannot screen either potential adopters or animals for health or
temperament. We urge all parties to act responsibly in these matters. All animals
adopted through Critter Magazine must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

THE TRAINER’S CORNER: Your New Rescue Dog

If you are thinking about
adopting a rescue dog or have
just adopted your new rescue
dog, congratulations! Bringing a
rescue dog into your home can
be one of the most rewarding
experiences you’ll ever have
plus, you are giving your new
rescue dog the best home he
has ever had! In this article, you will find information
that can help you make the transition from homeless
to fur-ever home easier for your new rescue dog and
you.
One of the most important aspects of bringing
your new rescue dog into your home is providing him
with positive training and consistent communication
so that he can understand how you want him to act.
Often, rescue dogs have been in several different
environments such as roaming the streets, being in a
shelter or foster home, prior to coming into your
home and as such, the dog will need guidance from
you in his new environment.
Don’t assume that he will automatically know what
you want him to do. Providing positive training from
the start will not only help him adapt to his new
environment, but will increase the bond between the
two of you.
Prior to bringing your new rescue dog home,
ensure that you have certain essential supplies on
hand for him such as a leash and collar, ID tags,
water and food bowls, toys, and a crate. If possible,
try to bring a small blanket or towel from the shelter
or rescue group home with you. You can place this
towel inside his crate at night when he goes to sleep
so that he’ll have familiar smells nearby to help
alleviate any first night stress he may have.
Proper planning on your part will help to ensure a
smooth transition for your dog into his new, fur-ever
home. In the next issue, we will discuss positive
training strategies which you can employ that are
specifically geared toward the unique issues of
rescue dogs. Until then, happy training!

The Dogs Who Found Me: What I've Learned from
Pets Who Were Left Behind By Ken Foster
The wonder of this book is
that it is written by an average
guy. Ken does not volunteer at
the Humane Society; Ken does
not work for the SPCA, or
belong to a rescue group. What
he does do is the work of a Good Samaritan. Once
he finds love with his own dog, he becomes aware
of the lost souls by the sides of the road, wandering
the dog parks, or sitting at a local convenience store
– with no one awaiting their return. Ken is just a guy
who helps the dogs who happen to cross his path,
he is not the guy who turns away, pretending not to
see, assuming someone else will take care of it.
Ken tells many of the stories of how these dogs
“found” him, and lucky for them, Ken stops
everything on his schedule to find each of them
safety and security. The lesson for each of us
comes in a quote I once read: "Saving one animal
won't change the world, but it will change the world
for that one animal". Ken’s book helps us remember
that each of us CAN save the world, if only the world
of one lost soul at a time.

Lessons in Compassion at Myrtle Beach School
The Ambassadors for Animals
stood on stage waiting to talk to
fifth graders at Myrtle Beach Intermediate School, but the real
ambassadors were those with four
legs and furry coats who spoke
volumes through their wagging tails
and wet kisses. Angel, a Pit Bull
adopted from a local shelter, and
General, a yellow Lab taken in
as a stray, served as outstanding
examples that animals treated with
kindness and respect become model
citizens.
Focusing mainly on dogs, Ann
Taylor and Janet Rod informed
students about basic pet care and
responsibilities, including the need for exercise,
companionship, and vet care. Students were
cautioned about the misery dogs suffer from too tight
collars, long term chaining, and general neglect.
Kindness and empathy for animals were key points.
Craig and Trish Weintraub told students that Angel
came into their home as a foster from Grand Strand
Humane Society’s shelter, but the thin Pit Bull stole
their hearts with her gentle nature so they added her
to their pack (they already had three dogs). Today
she is a beautiful, compact animal with
a gleaming tan coat, constantly wagging
her tail and smiling. Her message of
love is undeniable!
Illustrating the necessity for proper
pet identification, Laura Perneski
explained how General wandered into
her yard wearing no collar. Unable to
find his owner, she took him in; now this
devoted dog, along with Lab companion
Sasha, accompanies Laura almost
everywhere. Perneski also gave
students copies of Critter Magazine,
urging them to contribute stories to the
publication.
Myrtle Beach Animal Control Officer
Steven Trott ended the program with
valuable information on the reasons dogs bite
and ways to prevent it. He provided a handout in
story form as follow-up. Students then addressed
questions to the presenters.
Taylor and Rod were pleased with the students’
reception and plan a return trip to the school in May.
The fifth graders gave back by collecting a large
supply of sheets, blankets, and towels for animals at
the city’s shelter still waiting for a home.
